Ohio vs. Nevada

-- The Ohio Bobcats (6-6 straight up, 4-8 against the spread) from the Mid-American Conference will battle the Nevada Wolf Pack (7-5 straight up, 5- against the spread) from the American Athletic Conference in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho.

-- The Bobcats have won their past two bowl game appearances, including last season's 27-0 win over San Diego State, a Mountain West team, at the Frisco Bowl. They also won their only previous appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, a narrow 24-23 win over Utah State on Dec. 17, 2011.

-- Nevada won their bowl appearance last season, too, topping Arkansas State 16-13 in the Arizona Bowl, and like Ohio, they have also won each of their past two postseason appearances. They haven't played in Boise for a bowl game since Dec. 30, 2008, a 42-35 loss to Maryland when the game was called the Humanitarian Bowl. They also lost by one point, 21-20, to Miami (Fla.) on Dec. 31, 2006 when the game was sponsored by MPC Computers.

-- Ohio heads into this game ranked 33rd in total yards (443.3), 72nd in passing yards (226.8) and 22nd in rushing yards (216.5) while checking in 20th with 34.7 points per game. Defensively, the Bobcats allowed 401.7 total yards per game to end up 76th in the nation, they were 62nd against the pass (223.8) and 82nd against the run (177.9) while yielding 27.0 PPG.

-- Nevada ranked just 103rd in the land in total yards per game (360.0), while ending up 62nd in pass (236.5) and 117th in rushing yards (123.5) per outing. They alos posted just 21.3 PPG to finish 111th. Defensively they were so-so, but the stats were skewed due to a pair of blowout losses, a 77-6 setback at Oregon and a 54-3 beating from Hawaii.

-- The Wolf Pack have more issues, too, as S Austin Arnold, CB Daniel Brown (team-high four interceptions) and NT Hausia Sekona were each suspended for this game due to a post-game brawl against UNLV. All three were starters.

-- Ohio is 4-0 ATS in the past four bowl games, and 5-1 ATS in their past six neutral-site affairs. They're also 18-8 ATS in the past 26 non-conference battles. However, the Bobcats are 2-7 ATS in the previous nine as a favorite.

-- Nevada is 3-1-1 ATS in the previous five bowl games, and they're 3-0-1 ATS in the past four neutral-site games as an underdog.

-- The over is 5-2 in the past seven overall for Ohio, while going 11-4 in their past 15 non-conference games. The over is also 5-2 in the past seven against winning teams, while going 5-1 in the past six as a favorite.

The first full weekend of conference matchups in college basketball gets underway on Friday with a full slate of games in the Mid Majors. The lone exception are a few key battles in the Big Ten and Big East.

The first game on Friday night’s betting board sends the Wisconsin Badgers on the road against the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes. The big showdown in the Big East pits the Georgetown Hoyas on the road against the Seton Hall Pirates.

Betting Matchup

The Badgers closed out 2019 with a 65-37 romp over Rider on New Year’s Eve as 13-point home favorites. They resume Big Ten play at 1-1 both straight-up and against the spread after beating Indiana at home and losing to Rutgers on the road. They closed as slight underdogs in each contest. Wisconsin is 8-5 SU with a 6-7 record ATS. It did cover in its last three games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of its last eight games.

The Badgers’ biggest win this season came against Tennessee last Saturday, with D’Mitrik Trice scoring 21 points in the lopsided 68-48 road win as four-point underdogs.

Sunday’s 67-59 home loss to West Virginia as six-point favorites was the Buckeyes’ second SU setback in four games after a perfect 9-0 start. They slipped to 10-3 ATS on the year with the total staying UNDER 136 points in that latest loss. It had gone OVER in five of their previous seven contests. Ohio State was outscored 36-22 in the second half of Sunday’s game.

Junior forward Kaleb Wesson scored a team-high 17 points. He has exceeded his team-high 14.2 point scoring average in three of his last five starts.

Betting Trends

-- The Badgers are 13-5 SU in their last 18 Big Ten games and they have covered in four of their last five January games.

-- The Buckeyes have lost six of their last seven January games SU with the total going OVER in their last five conference games.

Georgetown’s SU six-game winning streak (SU and ATS) came to an end on New Year’s Eve in a 76-60 loss to Providence in its Big East opener. The Hoyas closed as 2 ½-point road underdogs and the total stayed UNDER 148 points. It has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games. They are 10-4 SU overall with an 8-6 record ATS.

Georgetown is averaging 80.3 points per game behind senior center Omer Yurtseven’s 17.9-point scoring average. He had 14 points with 10 rebounds in Tuesday night’s loss. This was his third double-double in four games.

The Pirates opened conference play on Monday with a 74-66 road victory against DePaul as slight 1 ½-point favorites. They have won their last three games SU and ATS to improve to 9-4 both SU and ATS. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of their last nine games.

Myles Powell scored 27 points in Monday’s win after missing his last few starts due to a concussion. The senior guard has averaged a team-high 21.7 PPG in 11 games this season. Seton Hall is averaging 74.7 points a game while allowing 64.4 point on defense.

Game of the Night: 76ers at Rockets – 8:05 PM EST

Both these teams own 23 wins, but one of these squads leads their division, while the other sits in third place of its division. Philadelphia (23-13 SU, 15-17-4 ATS) has dropped three straight games to fall behind Boston and Toronto in the Atlantic division, as the 76ers try to avoid a winless road swing. Following a pair of one-point defeats at Orlando and Miami, Philadelphia was rolled at Indiana on Tuesday afternoon, 115-97 as 3 ½-point underdogs, while playing without center Joel Embiid, who missed the game with a knee injury.

The Rockets (23-11 SU, 17-17 ATS) are the leaders of the Southwest division by one game over the Mavericks heading into Friday’s action. Houston bounced back from a 15-point setback at New Orleans to rout Denver on Tuesday, 130-104 as six-point home favorites. To be fair, the Rockets were without stars James Harden and Russell Westbrook in the Sunday defeat to the Pelicans, but the dynamic duo combined for 63 points against the Nuggets on 21-of-39 shooting from the floor.

Philadelphia has dominated at home with a scorching 16-2 record, but the 76ers have struggled away from Wells Fargo Center with a 7-11 mark. The Sixers have compiled an ugly 1-7 SU ledger in the role of a road underdog this season, while cashing only three times with the lone victory coming at Boston on December 12. Philadelphia has won only once in five road affairs against Western Conference opponents as the 76ers defeated the Blazers at the buzzer in early November.

The Rockets have posted a 7-1 ATS record in their last eight opportunities as a favorite of 6 ½ points or less, while Houston seeks consecutive home covers for the first time since late November.

The 76ers and Rockets have not hooked up yet this season as the two heavyweights split a pair of matchups last season with the home team winning each time. Philadelphia last captured a victory at the Toyota Center in 2017 with a 115-107 triumph as seven-point underdogs.


Heat at Magic – 7:05 PM EST

The battle of the Sunshine State takes place in Orlando as the Heat (25-9 SU, 20-12-2 ATS) slowed down the Raptors on Thursday night, 84-76 to cash as 5 ½-point favorites. Miami has posted five victories against Toronto, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee this season, while opening up a commanding 10-game advantage in the Southeast division. The Heat have taken care of business at home with an incredible 16-1 record, while putting together a respectable 9-8 mark away from south Florida.

The Magic (15-19 SU, 14-18-2 ATS) reside in second place of the Southeast as Orlando snapped a two-game skid in Wednesday’s 122-101 blowout of Washington as three-point road favorites. Orlando improved to 3-0 this season against Washington, as the Magic rebounded from a rough home loss as 10 ½-point favorites to the struggling Hawks on Monday. The Magic rattled off four consecutive victories to start December, but they lost their touch since by going 4-8 the last 12 games to slip below the .500 mark.

Miami has not fared well on the second end of a back-to-back set this season by going 2-4 SU and 1-3-2 ATS. The Heat have failed to cover in their last three opportunities as a road favorite, including getting upset by the Wizards on Monday as 11-point chalk, 123-105. Miami and Orlando are meeting for the first time this season as the Magic captured three of four meetings last season. The Magic have struggled as a home underdog this season by losing five of seven games in this role.


Pelicans at Lakers – 10:35 PM EST

For the second time this season, Anthony Davis will face his former team as Los Angeles (27-7 SU, 18-16 ATS) continues a five-game homestand. The Lakers cruised past the Mavericks and Suns in the first two contests at Staples Center, while L.A. welcomes in three below .500 teams over the next five days with New Orleans, Detroit, and New York coming to town.

In Wednesday’s 117-107 victory over Phoenix, the final score was extremely misleading as the Lakers jumped out to a commanding 43-17 lead after one quarter and 33-point halftime edge. However, Phoenix outscored Los Angeles, 66-43 in the second half to grab the miracle cover as 11-point underdogs.

The last time the Lakers hooked up with the Pelicans on November 27 in New Orleans, Davis returned to the Big Easy to torch his old team for 41 points and help the Lakers rally from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to shock the Pelicans, 114-110. New Orleans grabbed the cover as 6 ½-point underdogs, but the Pelicans dropped their third consecutive meeting with the Lakers.

The Pelicans (11-23 SU, 14-19-1 ATS) will be well-rested as they last took the court on Sunday evening in a 127-112 victory over the short-handed Rockets. New Orleans has come back to life following a 6-22 start to win five of its last six games, including four straight victories. The competition has not been too shabby, including road triumphs at Portland and Denver, while also blowing out Indiana at home.

New Orleans is listed as a double-digit underdog for the third time this season, as it cashed in a three-point loss at Houston as 12-point ‘dogs in October, while getting rolled in their most recent trip to Staples Center by the Clippers in late November.
