2-Unit Play. Take #791 Georgia Tech (+11.5) over Florida State (Noon, Tuesday, Dec. 31)
I'm banking on Jose Alvarado making a big impact now that he's back to full strength. He played in all three games in Hawaii and should be back up to speed after a few days off. He, not Michael Devoe, is Tech's best player. Junior Jordan Usher, a USC transfer, is also eligible now and this is a bit better Jackets team. Florida State is no joke. They are big, they are strong and they are deep. However, they are also pretty young. And with a bigger game against Louisville on deck the Seminoles might be looking past the Yellowjackets in this one. FSU has had some wobbly moments - a loss at Pittsburgh, close wins against Western Carolina and South Florida - and I don't know that they are going to lay the wood here.
2-Unit Play. Take #797 Miami (+2.5) over Clemson (4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31)
We are in ACC play and it is now put up or shut up time for the Hurricanes. This team has all the pieces to be successful in ACC play. They have experience, they have shooting, they have just enough size, they have depth and they have a really good coach. Now it is just about finding some chemistry. Miami is better than Clemson. The Tigers lost their three best players from last season and they have struggled since the opening game. Clemson has lost five of its last six games and they really haven't been that competitive in those losses. Miami is the much better team in this game. They just need to play like it.
3-Unit Play. Take #802 Missouri State (-6) over Evansville (5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31)
The public is all about Evansville in this game. I'll go the other way. Evansville beat Kentucky on the road in one of the biggest upsets of the year. However, they haven't done much since then. They have lost to some really bad teams like ECU, George Washington and Jacksonville State. I think that Missouri State is better than it has played. They are relying on a bunch of transfers this season. And it took some time for them to get a feel for playing with one another. Also, two of their seven losses are by a single point and four of the seven are by four points or fewer. That includes some close losses to teams like Buffalo, Xavier and Miami. I think that this group is going to be focused and ready to go for the start of league play. Finally, the Purple Aces also have to deal with distraction surrounding head coach Walter McCarty, who has been placed on leave.

SUN BOWL -- The list of standouts not playing on both sides seems longer than the one with who will suit up. Plus, Arizona State’s two coordinators are gone. What cannot be ignored is Florida State having roughly 20 players who are sitting out, plan to transfer or are injured. In fact, the Seminoles are without a single RB on scholarship. The task appears overwhelming for interim coach Odell Haggins, a placeholder for Mike Norvell. ASU coach Herm Edwards does not come across as a rock of stability but, in this context, qualifies as such.
