SAMFORD -7.5
THE CITADEL @ SAMFORD | 1/01 | 3:00 PM EST
9:08 AM
Samford heads into New Year’s Day on a poor stretch of three straight losses. Yet the Bulldogs faced far better competition than Southern conference opponent Citadel. Samford won two of three last season against the Citadel, including a 100-71 victory. Samford’s senior guards Josh Sharkey and Brandon Austin should continue to flourish against Citadel’s frenetic pace of play. Grab Samford.

NEW MEXICO -10.5
NEW MEXICO @ SAN JOSE ST. | 1/01 | 10:00 PM EST

Recent key suspensions from the Lobos in Carlton Bragg and JJ Caldwell have put a burden on the Lobos. A new starting five struggled Sunday with 21 turnovers against 5-10 UC Davis. That outing should have them prepped and ready for corrections. San Jose State just does not have the caliber of athletes to hang with the Lobos for forty minutes.
5-Unit Play. Take #826 East Tennessee State (-8) over Wofford (4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 1) This East Tennessee State team is no joke. And they have definitely had this game circled. Wofford won the SoCon regular season and tournament titles last year, sweeping ETSU during the regular season and beating them in the conference tournament. ETSU will want revenge. And this number suggests they will get it. The public is all over Wofford here, which is why this number is coming down. This is not even close to the same level Wofford team. They lost their coach and three starters, including two of the best players in program history in Cam Jackson and Fletcher Magee. This is essentially the same ETSU team, only better this year with the development of some young players like Bod Hodges. This team gave Kansas a run in Lawrence and they blew out LSU on the road just two weeks ago. Wofford is getting a lot of mileage out of beating a skeleton UNC team. But they have been hammered ont eh road by teams like Missouri and South Florida and they barely beat some bad teams like Gardner Webb. Last year East Tennessee started league play with Furman. Furman was an excellent team that finished third in league play and finished ranked in the Top 60. ETSU beat them by 23 points. I can see a similar ass-kicking in this game.
1-Unit Play. Take #820 Samford (-7.5) over Citadel (3 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 1) This was supposed to be the year that Scott Padgett and Samford started to make some headway. So far - not so good. These guys have been a dud. I will give them credit for playing a challenging schedule. But they haven't played well. I think that they will get a bit of a jolt from the start of league play, though, and I think that they can get a blowout here against a Citadel team that plays at a breakneck pace.
1-Unit Play. 5-POINT TEASER: Take #820 Samford (-2.5) over Citadel (3 p.m.) AND Take #826 East Tennessee State (-3) over Wofford (4 p.m.)
