ATLANTIC BATTLE

The biggest game on Monday has the Atlantic Division’s third and fourth-place teams facing off when Toronto visits Florida and tries to maintain its hold on the division’s No. 3 seed. Over the last 10 games, the Panthers have scored the second most goals in the East but will need someone else to pick up the scoring slack with their leading-scoring center Alex Barkov out of order. Barkov exited Saturday’s game with an apparent knee injury.

The Panthers whipped the Maple Leafs before the All-Star break 8-4 - a game that the Leafs haven’t forgotten and also one in which Barkov collected three points. Toronto has come out of the break hot, winning its first three games since the mid-season hiatus while Florida is coming off a goalless performance in Montreal on Saturday. The Chicago Blackhawks are winners of four straight on the road and head to Minnesota to take on the Wild Tuesday night. The Wild’s first game after their 10 days off was a forgettable performance, losing 6-1 at home to the Bruins in a game in which they allowed three powerplay goals.

Chicago has had success against the Wild winning the last four matchups with the most recent a 5-3 victory on December 15. Chicago sits three points out of the final playoff spot in the West and will be worth the price of admission as a proable moneyline underdog Tuesday. The Blackhawks have won their last three games as pups, paying out +120. +170 and +155.


STRIKING OIL IN THE DESERT

The last time the Arizona Coyotes won a game the date was January 14. Since then, the Yotes have dropped five in a row including their three games after the All-Star break. Defense hasn’t been its strong suit either, as Arizona has allowed its opponent to score three or more goals in each of its last nine games. Tuesday night they welcome the Edmonton Oilers, who have scored 15 goals in their three games since the All-Star break.

Conor McDavid & Co. lead the league in goals since January 1 at 4.5 per game, capitalizing on their scoring chances with a league-high shooting percentage of 19.65 percent. Edmonton is also 4-1 SU in its last five road games and has won the last three matchups in Arizona. Take the visiting team on the moneyline.


GETTING OVER THE HUMP DAY

Hump day gives us two offenses that are scoring more than three goals a game in the new year and are combining to hit the Over at 65 percent in 2020. The Leafs offense is always a treat to watch when you’re tailing the Over as the Buds have seen totals below 6.5 goals just five times in their last 21 games. Their goalie, Frederick Andersen, has also been aiding the Overs, allowing three or more goals in 10 of his last 13 games.

Helping the Rangers' offense has been the play of their special teams. Since the calendar turned to 2020, New York has the league’s second-best powerplay attack at over 30 percent. We're taking the Over 6.5 on this mid-week matchup.


GOALIE PROFILE: CAREY PRICE, MONTREAL CANADIENS

The Habs goalie has looked good out of the break, winning two of his four starts including a 4-0 shutout of January’s best offense: the Florida Panthers. On Tuesday, Price and Canadiens will take on the New Jersey Devils, who have lost two of their three games since the break.

Over his career, the Montreal goalie has a goals against average of 2.49 versus the Devils with a .910 save percentage. We like Price to keep the Habs in the game against a struggling Devils team in what should be a plus-money moneyline for the visiting team.


INJURY UPDATE: D SHAYNE GOSTIBEHERE, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

The Flyers should get a boost to their blueline this week and perhaps as early as Monday with the return of defenseman Shayne Gostibehere. The young blueliner doesn’t play huge minutes (about 18 per game), but the rearguard does average over two minutes of powerplay time per game which is the second most on the team by a defenseman.

Having Gostisbehere could help the Flyers powerplay which is scoring at only 20 percent with the defenseman on the shelf. Their Monday opponent, the Detroit Red Wings, are in the bottom half in the league in penalties taken of late and own the 29th-ranked penalty kill since January 1. Goals could come Philly’s way this week and be aware of their totals as they will also be without their goalie Carter Hart.


HAT TRICK TRENDS

• The Edmonton Oilers are 5-1-2 O/U in their last eight games and are leading the league in goals per game in 2020. On Tuesday, they travel to Arizona, which is giving up 3.8 goals per game since January 15 and is usually fitted with a total of 5.5 goals. Edmonton is 8-4 O/U on totals of 5.5 this year.

• The Chicago Blackhawks have the best first-period Over record spanning the last 10 games at 8-2 O/U. They travel to Minnesota on Tuesday and take on the Wild who are 6-4 O/U in first-period totals in their last 10.

• Since the All-Star break, away underdogs have been straight cashing. The traveling dogs are 17-5 SU (77 percent) over the last week and are 19-3 ATS on the +1.5 as well.

My choice for this race is CLASSY COVE. His 78 average has this gelding with among the best Speed Figures in here. Going in a dirt route race gives this gelding a competitive shot. Could beat this group of animals given the 85 Equibase speed fig recorded in his last outing. CASH REWARD - Might best this group here, showing quite good figures of late. Seems to have a quite good class edge based on the recent company kept. OLDTIMERS VISION - McCartney has this gelding moving well and is a respectable pick based on the quite good Speed Figures garnered in route races lately. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding.

REGAL QUALITY - This gelding has been trying different distances, but from the looks of things, he ran a nice speed figure last try at this trip. Esquivel and Abrams perform well when they combine forces. It's hard to beat a +183 ROI for a rider and trainer. A big drop in Equibase class figure points from his December 30th race at Parx Racing. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this horse the advantage. Ran a lackluster race at Parx Racing in the last race. Racing on a fast track puts this gelding at the top of my contenders roll call. A J'S WAY - This jockey and handler's equines have been producing a beneficial ROI.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 STORMY JUSTIN (ML=3/2), #6 JONES TAXI (ML=4/1),

STORMY JUSTIN - This less than sharp equine hasn't been on the track since December 31st. Not even any morning drills. When scrutinizing today's Equibase class figure, he will have to register a much better speed figure than last time around the track to battle in this dirt route. JONES TAXI - Recorded a quite unimpressive speed figure in the last race in a $7,500 Claiming race on January 7th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure. Tough to support since I think a 'strong performance bounce' is in the works this time out.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - REGAL QUALITY - My analysis says this is the lone stalker in the race. Expect him to sit off the pace on the backside, then pull away as they run down the stretch.

I think AWESOME HALO is a solid choice. Tough to pass on this gelding with Quinones in the irons. Will most likely go to the front end and should never look back. Has to be carefully examined in this event if only for the competitive Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last competition. DINESEN - Has been consistently running well as of late. Displays sound speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this field. BORA BORA - Have to examine solely on class, with some of the most favorable class figs of this group of animals. Must be given a chance based on the solid speed figure posted in the last contest.

EVER VIGILANT - Jockey hops back up aloft after getting to know the thoroughbred by riding last time around the track. That's always a positive sign. This filly is rounding her way back into shape. Should run well today. Racing at a similar level as last race on January 7th at Turf Paradise. I think McFarlane has found a good spot for her, and I like her chances in this race. SHE'S NO DRAMA - Trainer, Kenney, has been deliberate with this mare off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Made a nice mid-race move on January 7th only to hang down the homestretch. Should improve off of that effort.

MARNIE GIRL - Not probable for this thoroughbred to make an impact with no success lately in a short distance contest. I think this probable favorite needs this race under her belt to start getting back into shape. FLIGHT DATA - Don't feel this vulnerable equine will make an impact in today's race. That last rating was mediocre when compared with today's class figure. CODIFY - Recorded a pedestrian fig last time out in a $30,000 Maiden Optional Claiming race on January 5th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that rating.
