Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Wagering Strategies for 3/01/20

    March 1, 2020
Jeff Siegel’s Daily Analysis & Wagering Strategies
    Santa Anita
    Sunday, March 1, 2020
    *

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “Daily Analysis and Wagering Strategies” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
    *
It is recommended that Jeff’s selections be used to augment the reader’s own personal handicapping, though excellent results can be achieved by applying the rolling exotic strategy specified by Jeff’s analysis. Jeff’s recommended plays are intended for players with a moderate budget; however, readers are encouraged to adjust Jeff’s wagering strategy to fit their preferred investment level.
    *
Handicappers also are encouraged to access Jeff’s Daily Santa Anita Workout Analysis (see below), an exclusive report containing commentary, fractional times, grades, and a link to the video of the actual workout by each race’s key contenders.

    *

    Grade A=Highest degree of confidence.
    Grade B=Solid Play.
    Grade C=Least preferred, or pass.
Grade X=probable winner but odds are not likely to offer wagering value.
    *
The selections are available every racing day after morning scratches. For updates, please follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

Today’s Workout Analysis: View PDF File
    *
    *

    RACE 1: Post 1:00 PT. Grade: B
    Use:4-Desert Swarm; 7-Sorriso

Forecast: Desert Swarm flashed speed, faded, and then went to the sidelines last summer after just one start, but he’s trained like he’s a better colt now and hails from a barn that has strong stats with layoff runners. The son of Desert Code doesn’t really have a whole lot to beat in this state-bred maiden special weight sprint, so let’s put him on top while also including the intriguing newcomer, Sorriso, in our rolling exotic play. The son of Smiling Tiger is bred for much speed and has shown signs of it in morning preps. At this abbreviated sprint distance, he could be tough to catch if he breaks with his field.
    *
    *
    RACE 2: Post 1:28 PT. Grade: B
    Single: 3-Beau Rocket

Forecast: Beau Rocket seems to have found a proper spot in this five-runner bottom-rung claiming miler for fillies and mares. The lightly-raced mare drops drastically in class, switches to A. Cedillo, and recently worked quite well to indicate a form reversal may be in store. She can be the controlling speed if she wants to be, and in a race lacking in effective closers the daughter of Heatseeker can get brave if not pressured early. At 5/2 on the morning line she’s a straight play and rolling exotic single.
    *
    *
    RACE 3: Post 1:58 PT. Grade: B
    Use: 2-Fire When Ready; 3-Freiburg

Forecast: Fire When Ready is double jumped in class following a $12,500 Mullins claim – always a good sign – and after showing improvement in the morning for his new connections the son of Empire Way may be set to produce a significant forward move. A two-time winner over the local main track and with numbers that make him competitive despite the raise to the $20,000 level, ‘Ready switches to hot-riding U. Rispoli and rates top billing. Freiburg has back numbers that can win and is trying an easier group today, so the M. Glatt-trained gelding is a “must use” in rolling exotic play. We’ll try to get by using just these two in rolling exotic play; we’ll also have extra tickets keying Fire When Ready to top.
    *
    *
    RACE 4: Post 2:28 PT. Grade: B-
    Use: 2-Treasure Hunter; 5-Winning Element

Forecast: Here’s another five runner affair, this one for $50,000 claimers over a mile on the main track. Treasure Hunter, a $35,000 claim last May by M. Glatt (terrific stats with this angle), returns waiver protected and has been first or second in eight of 12 starts over the Santa Anita main track. If he’s ready – and the works indicate fitness – the son of Treasure Beach can handle this assignment either on the front end or from a good stalking position. Winning Element, a $40,000 R. Hansen claim last month, is solid on numbers and really won’t have to improve much at all following a sharp last-out victory under F. Prat, who rides him back. The son of City Zip should find himself in a comfortable stalking position outside and have his chance from the quarter pole home. We’ll prefer Treasure Hunter on top but include both in our rolling exotics.
    *
    *
    RACE 5: Post 3:01 PT. Grade: B
    Use: 2-Storming Lady; 4-Sold It

Forecast: Sold It turns back to a sprint and should fire her best shot under conditions that seem made to order. The D. O’Neill-trained daughter of The Factor is strong on speed figures and is a perfect one-for-one at this distance on grass. Storming Lady is most effective when held up early and allowed to run late. This course has been kind to the closers this meeting and with F. Prat staying aboard the daughter of Flat Out should get the kind of trip that will bring out her best. Both should be used in rolling exotic play; we’ll have a few extra tickets keying Sold It on top.
    *
    *
    RACE 6: Post 3:32 PT. Grade: B-
    Use: 3-Coilette; 4-Leading Indicator

Forecast: We’ve got this restricted (nw-3) $16,000 extended sprint for fillies and mares down to two main contenders, and both should be used in rolling exotic play. Leading Indicator, first or second in each of her last three outings, seems set for another top effort, and with just eight starts on her resume the daughter of Clubhouse Rise should have room for further improvement. Her numbers are gradually rising, she has the proper style for this six and one-half furlong trip, and she’s reunited with “win rider: A. Espinoza. Coilette, freshened since mid-December, hails from a high percentage outfit and projects to be on or near the lead throughout. Both of her races over the Santa Anita main track were good, and not much better will be needed to return her to the winner’s circle.
    *
    *
    RACE 7: Post 4:03 PT. Grade: B
    Use: 1-Oliver; 3-Fashionably Fast

Forecast: Fashionable Fast has won five straight, but this race is a mile and the razor sharp son of Lucky Pulpit has yet to prove he can be as effective around two-turns as he is sprinting. Strong on speed figures and thoroughly genuine and consistent, the D. Pederson-trained gelding has never been better so we suspect in his present form he’ll be able to get the trip. Oliver always hits hard in these state-bred stakes and actually won at this one mile distance in a stakes at Los Alamitos last year. He’ll draft into a good stalking position, and if Fashionable Fast finds the final furlong a bit too much this son of Papa Clem could be there to pick him up. Both should be included in your rolling exotics.
    *
    *
    RACE 8: Post 4:34 PT. Grade: B
    Single: 5-A Man’s Man

Forecast: A Man’s Man is a single by default in this maiden state-bred turf sprint that came up unusually light;. The son of Mucho Macho Man ran well when finishing in the frame under these conditions in late January despite a less than ideal trip and anything close to that type of performance today should get the money. At 5/2 on the morning line, the B.Koriner-trained gelding is a straight play and rolling exotic single.

Al Cimaglia: March 1-Hawthorne Racecourse Pick 5 Analysis

      March 1, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
It was an interesting Saturday night at Hawthorne Racecourse as there were a number of big prices. The upsets have caused carryovers in the Early and Late Pick 4's as well as the Pick 5. The Late Pick 4 has been assigned a $40,000 guaranteed pool and the Pick 5 has a $100,000 guaranteed pool. My focus is on the 0.50 Pick 5 and it appears to be another big challenge.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 1

1-Fox Valley Charliz (9/2)-Couldn't make up any ground in last but did race the 2nd half in .57 and now drops down to face easier. Shouldn't blush at the company and looks to be a square price.
4-Hard Headed Woman (2-1)-Program chalk steps down and should be a player versus this crew. Appears to have a good chance of snagging a win but is only 3 for 37 at Haw and has only 3 wins in last 41 starts.

      Race 2

2-Brienne The Beauty (9/2)-Beaten favorite came up short. Now camera-shy mare is in a spot to get sucked around and could rally late.
3-KZ Kool Desire (7-1)-Only 1-24 at Haw but fits here and did close well last time. Makes 2nd Stickney start and will look for upswing to continue.
4-Roberts New Life (5-1)-Comes off a tough trip but did pace hard to the wire. Best to respect in an open affair and has down well here in the past.
6-Vegas Highroller (4-1)-Was used aggressively in 1st local start and was coming off a 3-week rest. Could be better
in 2nd try for new barn.

      Race 3

2-Mamaneedsmorewine (2-1)-Started slowly and rallied nicely in 1st start of the year. Not sure if is 2-1 good but has shown ability to pass horses and finish the mile. Oosting could put in play sooner and make a move down the lane to take a picture.
8-Bluebird Luigi (5-1)-Raced well in 1st start at Haw and that was coming off a scratch. Bates could find some live cover and rally down the lane.

      Race 4

1-Rushing Reba (10-1)-Even effort last week in 1st start of the meet and is in a spot to trip out at a nice price.
3-Valar Morghulis (2-1)-Has been bet down in both local starts and has gotten on the engine and faded to finish 2nd. Could be tight enough to make every call a winning one but doesn't offer any value.
5-Tell Marcia (5/2)-Didn't show much vigor in 1st start since 9/27 but will expect better this time. Has won 3 of 6 starts at Haw.
8-Daybreak Girl (20-1)-Raced a quick back half last week and now makes 2nd start of the meet and adds Lasix. Will take a swing at a big price.

      Race 5

2-Model (5-1)-Had a nice effort in last and now steps-up but that doesn't mean much as the entire field is doing the same except for #8.
8-Pretty Image (3/2)-Back at the same level after beating Open company in 1st start off the bench. Did skip a start and is stuck outside but should be a major player with a clean trip.

      0.50 Pick 5

      1,4/2,3,4,6/2,8/1,3,5,8/2,8
      Total Bet=$64

        Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

        Aqueduct - Race #2
#5 Chillinwithfriends Pace player drew well for her attacking style, will like the drop out of the starter ranks, ran huge two-back when in for a tag, and won't be favored; look out.
#6 Awesome Alana Stiff ML favorite will be bet hard on the drop for Brown, but she was dreadful when last seen and now is in for a tag, which isn't a good sign; trying to beat.
#4 Ok Honey Logical sort was in too tough against a good NYB AOC group last time, so this drop makes sense, though the top pair still seem a bit better; underneath only.
Race Summary You won't get rich on the 5 but with the 6 taking all the money you may get a better price than you should on a gal who fits nicely here, and who seems to have a big tactical edge as well, so play her to win and place, while getting some additional value by using her in the early Pk5 and to kick off the early Pk4, as budget players will be singling the chalk, even though she may be heading the wrong way.
        Aqueduct - Race #4
#6 Tale of Mist Price player has actually been facing better and more than holding his own, yet because he's trained by a low percentage Persaud barn, he may get overlooked here, even tough his form against these stacks up quite nicely; upset special.
#2 Wegotoldyougotsold Dangerous stalker has been in good form and now goes off the claim for Servis, a big 29% move, so even though he lost to the chalk by 5 1/2 lengths last time, he may very well turn the tables for his potent new barn; looms plenty scary.
#1 Life in Shambles ML favorite beat the 2 handily two-back when trained by Servis then regressed a bit off the Kantarmaci claim last time on figures, though he was beaten a neck for 40k, so there's some mixed signals here, at underlaid odds too; not sold on today.
Race Summary That 6-1 ML seems like a huge overlay on the 6, especially when viewed on his recent form and competition, so play him in all the slots at 4-1 or better, while really bolstering his value by using him in the early Pk5/Pk4, since he's as logical as anyone here, yet seems destined to fall right through the wagering cracks.
        Aqueduct - Race #6
#4 Thunder Day Penn National invader looked good winning on debut then stubbed his toe a bit facing winners going two turns last time, but this is a one-turn mile, he should get some speed to rally into, and the price will be right; can surprise.
#8 Tapizearance Pace presser favorite finally broke through when he blasted NYB MCL'ers last time, but the waters get deeper here while facing winners, and there's some other speed too, so while he's the one to beat, he's also no lock; second-best.
#1 Mr. Shortandsimple Class dropper got beat up in the local GIII last time but has some sharp form to fall back on, though you wonder if that drubbing might have thrown him for a loop, which can happen more than you think; mixed signals here.
Race Summary With a likely overbet favorite in the 8 the 4 looks very appealing, especially since he invades for a very sharp Lawrence barn that rarely runs them where they don't belong, so give him a look to win and place, and especially in the late Pk5, and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, since a win in the 5-1 range would go a long way in adding plenty of value to both sequences.

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2
#6 Mz. Foo Do Worth a little look at a number as she draws well to track the splits outside. A couple of sharp pace players inside of her may force her rider's hand to take back just a bit.
#5 Rattlesnakerose Speed can be tough with this bunch, especially since she draws outside the other serious pace. Hat trick is within reach.
#2 Sonoma Storm Form tends to be all over the place, but she can relax off the splits and kick past some of the tiring speed while racing off the bench.
Race Summary Mz. Foo Do might get outrun a touch in the early going, but that could lead to a really perfect tracking trip in this spot.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #6
#6 Painted Image Faced a better group last time out and held her own, and something similar here will likely be enough to keep her in the mix late.
#2 Alydarius Looks tough on the drop, but note that she has had a couple chances with this kind in the past, and was offering far more attractive prices than she's going to provide this afternoon.
#1 My Masterpiece Dangerous pace draws find while down inside because she's going to go anyway, and if she's left alone for a breather, she may be tough to reel in.
Race Summary Painted Image fits well here and brings reliable turf form with her to battle. She should be in line for another really nice trip from close range.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #8
#5 Where's Oliver Has room to improve in this second start off the long layoff, and and the move back to the grass should help his cause.
#8 Opus North Solid finishing efforts at Woodbine make him one of the ones, but he'll have to fire fresh off the September break, and he may be one to keep tabs on for a next start at Keeneland.
#9 Empirically Has knocked on the door in recent starts, but he has also fallen short at 1/2 and 7/5 in those last two runs, and he'll be making his 12th lifetime start today. Have to oppose on principle.
Race Summary Where's Oliver has some upside on the move back to the grass, and he'll likely stay on better this time around with that last race under his belt off a December 2018 layoff.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#1 Travy Boy Had knocked heads with much tougher lately, can sprint to the lead from the inside and can hold on going this shorter distance.
#4 Combination Faces a more challenging task than he has been lately and goes for his 3rd straight win; got through the N2L and N3L ranks in fine fashion and can bring a strong late run vs. these.
#5 Ray'swarrior Should find relief in this distance. He's battled in all of the races on his form and most effective at 5 and 5.5 furlongs.
Race Summary Travy Boy will be aided from showing speed from the inside post, will put down some scorching fractions and will dig in vs. this group.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #7
#6 Bourbon in May Was a non-threatening 2nd in his 1st of the year but probably needed that one; broke his maiden over this course and will probably will make a strong late run.
#3 Road to Meath Was a maiden-claiming winner two back and ran evenly vs. winners in his latest; has trained well for his 1st of 2020.
#7 Surf and Turf Didn't reach his best stride until way too late last time out and can be much closer to the lead of this one; is stakes placed and should not be ignored.
Race Summary Bourbon in May's best races are better than any of his opponents and can put together a good rally after being runner-up late time.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #11
#4 On the Turf Moves over to the turf and stretches out. As his name would indicate, he's bred for grass and has been in some strong races. Makes his 2nd off the claim by Trombetta and can be force throughout.
#6 Earthquake Was very sharp in winning his last two -- one of the turf and the other in a race that transfer due to wet grounds. He has developed a consistent closing move and fits well here.
#9 King of Ranch Sparked on the front end of his last two and was claimed by Maker, who is knocking out wins at a 23-percent clip.
Race Summary On the Turf will find the pace to his liking and should have something left for when it matters the most.

                  Gulfstream Park - Race #12 - Post: 5:34pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $24,000 Class Rating: 85

                  Rating:

                  #1 ELITE APPEAL (ML=8/1)
                  #12 RECESS (ML=3/1)
                  #13 BLAME THE GODS (ML=4/1)
                  #7 FOR KICKS (ML=10/1)

ELITE APPEAL - Look for this one to go all the way to the winner's circle at some pretty good odds in this race. Ran fifth in last race, but not more than 5 from the lead at the finish. RECESS - Was in a $16,000 Claiming race at Gulfstream Park last race out. That clash had a class figure of 92 and she is moving down in this race. A certain contender. A thoroughbred coming back this rapidly after a nice effort is a good omen. BLAME THE GODS - Faced tougher last time around the track at Gulfstream Park. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker group, so I will put this animal on my list of choice plays. Running 1 mile on the grass, you've have to look at horse's turf figures. This horse has the tops in the bunch. Castellano was aboard this mare in the last race and was impressed enough to take the equine right back. Had a solid closing move last time around the track, running the last quarter in less than 25 seconds. A similar race today, and it's straight to the winner's circle. FOR KICKS - I just may give this one a chance. Should improve off last race where she did run out of the money, but was within 5 lengths at the finish line. Last out, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. A pretty good sign she can close well, and should be right there at the end this race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #15 ZODIAC PRINCESS (ML=7/2), #6 BARBADOLLA (ML=7/2), #14 KARENINA (ML=9/2),

ZODIAC PRINCESS - A pattern of decreasing speed figures 84/72/68 for this steed. This filly is always hitting the board, but just doesn't get the job done. Tough to wager on her on the top end. This pony ran a pedestrian speed figure last time out. She shouldn't run better and will probably get beat in today's race running that fig. BARBADOLLA - Recorded a disappointing speed rating in the last race in a $16,000 Claiming race on February 8th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that figure. KARENINA - If you keep playing these kind of 'hanger' types, you're going to be disillusioned most of the time. When examining today's class figure, she will have to record a better speed figure than last time around the track to compete in this turf route.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 ELITE APPEAL to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/2 or better though

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 6 FM STEEL ROCK 7/2
                    # 9 CORONA FINISH 12/1
                    # 2 CARBURADOR 6/1
I give the nod to FM STEEL ROCK here. Sire has produced very strong profits with his progeny in their first efforts. Good chance to finish in the money as sire's foals have been racing quite well lately. Conditioner has very strong win rate (19 percent) at this distance and surface. CORONA FINISH - Excellent chance to hit the wire ahead of this group of horses in this race given sire's 1st time starter figs who win at a 19 percent clip. CARBURADOR - Has very good early lick and will most likely fare admirably against this group. Always difficult to beat Sanchez and Sanchez working together, winning 19 percent of their races.

                        Laurel - Race #5 - Post: 2:18pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 55

                        Rating:

                        #5 GET THERE JOHN (ML=6/1)
                        #8 FIFTY SEVEN CHEVY (ML=3/1)

GET THERE JOHN - Ran in the last race against much better horses at Laurel. The move down the class ladder should suit him well. This colt gets a weight break of -7 pounds from last race. Should help right here. Trying to win for the first time moving from a race on the turf to the dirt. I think Potts will have him in good shape for today's race. FIFTY SEVEN CHEVY - Have to give this gelding a fair chance. Ran a good outing last time around the track within the last month. This is a fairly classic handicapping angle. Play a campaigner that finished 2nd in a maiden race last time out but finished well ahead of the show horse. The last speed rating of 49 is the top last race fig in the bunch.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #2 WHATS THE CHANCES (ML=2/1), #3 ALEPH (ML=5/2), #4 BOURBON AGOGO (ML=8/1),

WHATS THE CHANCES - Don't think this less than sharp equine has what it takes to cross the finish line in first this time. ALEPH - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in short distance events in order to play him. Awfully hard to play this questionable contender when he hasn't been showing any signs of readiness recently. BOURBON AGOGO - Could be tough for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put him on the possibly overvalued contestants list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - GET THERE JOHN - One of the class angles that my amigo Solo Steve and I play, is to look at the lifetime earnings per start. This thoroughbred is tops in my book.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #5 GET THERE JOHN on top if we're getting at least 7/5 odds

I think CHANNEL WON is a respectable choice. Had one of the strongest speed figures of this group in his last contest. Broberg has this gelding moving well and is a very good selection based on the strong Equibase Speed Figs earned in sprint races as of late. He has a competitive distance/surface win record - 3 for 10. HORSE DOCTOR - Overall, has one of the top earnings per start in turf sprint events in this lot. Has been close at the finish most every time lately. SNOOSE GOOSE - Trainer boasts sharp win numbers at this distance and surface. Must be given a chance based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last contest.
