MAAC FIRST ROUND -- Canisius is 3-2 SU last five and 4-2 ATS past six. The Golden Griffins have lost the last four game to Iona, two this year and two last year. Iona lost senior starting point guard Asante Gist and senior power forward Mo Thiam, which has forced it to a six-man rotation. Neither team is very good. Iona’s best win is against Rider, which the Gaels beat twice. Canisius beat #123 St. Bonaventure, #148 Siena and Rider #188. I have Iona one-point better than Canisius, but the Griffs have the revenge factor and better current form plus the higher-ranked defense.

5-Unit Play. Take #605 North Carolina (-4) over Virginia Tech (7 p.m., Tuesday, March 10)
Let's jump on with the Tar Heels. Throw their record out the window because UNC hasn't been healthy at all this season. They are as healthy as they have been all year now and they are on an upswing. Ignore the final score of that Duke game; that one was a lot closer than that. That's been a theme for the past month for the Heels, as they have had four losses by two points or less as they have worked to improve. Virginia Tech is trash. They played over their heads in November and December but then people caught onto them. They have one excellent player in Landers Nolley and then a bunch of bad/young ones. I think that Carolina is definitely the more motivated team here and I think that Roy Williams will have them ready to play. At full strength this was a team that beat Notre Dame, Oregon, Alabama, UCLA and Yale early in the season. They can take down the Hokies here.

1-Unit Play. Take #607 Manhattan (-2) over Fairfield (5 p.m., Tuesday, March 10)
Manhattan just lost by 16 points at home to Fairfield last Friday. That was their second loss to the Stags this season. Yet, the Jaspers are favored in this one. That is a red flag for me. I think Manhattan is the better team anyway and I think that they will advance here.

It's tough to bet against an Iona team that has been so good in this conference over the past several years.

1-Unit Play. Take #615 Illinois-Chicago (+4) over Northern Kentucky (7 p.m., Tuesday, March 10)
I have been driving the Illinois-Chicago bandwagon over the past month or so and I am kicking myself for not rolling with them last night. I'm going to come back to them though. Wright State was the best team in the conference and the Flames cut through them like butter. Illinois-Chicago's best four players are all very experienced seniors and these guys are playing like there is no tomorrow. Northern Kentucky hasn't been great off its home court. And the last time they faced UI-C they got blasted by 30 at home. It obviously won't be like that tonight. But I do think that the Flames are the better team right now and the team playing with momentum. I will take the points and look for a close game.

1-Unit Play. Take #618 North Dakota State (-6) over North Dakota (9 p.m., Tuesday, March 10)
I've felt all year that North Dakota State was the best team in this conference. They are proving it now. The only team that's beaten them since Jan. 23 was North Dakota. But I don't see that happening again. NDSU does have a problem in that they can go through scoring lulls. But they are on the verge of an NCAA Tournament bid and I think that this extremely experienced team will do enough to grind out an 8-9 point win.

2-Unit Play. Take #8350 Stony Brook (-7) over Hartford (7 p.m., Tuesday, March 10)
Stony Brook is a 20-win team and one of the better squads in the America East. They tested themselves in the nonconference and took some shots against some very good high-major teams. However, they lost both games to Hartford in the regular season, including an 11-point home loss on Feb. 26. I don't see Hartford beating Stony Brook on the Seawolves' home court twice in the matter of a few weeks. Hartford is not a good team, has not tested itself against top competition, and is starting two freshmen and a sophomore in what will be one of the more intense environments they've ever played in. I'll lay the points.
