    #16
    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Mountaineer - Race #2
#9 Shy Guy Might offer a little price here off the third-place run last time out, but he has been reliable in three grass starts and fits well here if he has any forward move in him off the comeback run.
#2 Soul Beam Back turf form in California stacks up nicely with what it'd take to score in here, and he already turned in a good effort off the claim for a barn that is red hot locally.
#7 Our Alibi Makes the turf debut after a useful comeback run, but I wouldn't want him as the favorite in a competitive race.
Race Summary Shy Guy is better on the dirt, but his turf form stacks up pretty favorably with this group, and he should be rolling home late.
    Mountaineer - Race #3
#4 Lovin Machen Second choice is worth a look in hopes the heavy chalk doesn't back up the last one, and this filly should be close up throughout tonight.
#7 West Virginia Pam The clear one to beat after seemingly waking up big time on the turf last time out. I'll usually take those kinds of efforts at face value until proven otherwise, but there is some chance she takes a big step back today at a short price. Single her or try to beat her.
#6 Eclipse Glow Has only had the one main track run so far, and though she didn't show anything that day, there is some room for improvement with that race under her belt while trying the turf for the first time.
Race Summary Lovin Machen is the most logical alternative to the big chalk, and she handled the turf just fine in her only spin over the local course.
    Mountaineer - Race #8
#1 Flirty She's a fairly reliable type who just faced a better group in that last one, and she can get a good trip here from midpack.
#2 Three Illusions Short-priced player probably wins this, but she's facing some better horses this time around. Perfect trip should be waiting for her.
#3 True Purpose Owns a few races that might translate well around two turns, and she might be the right price to get in the gimmicks with the more logical players.
Race Summary Flirty was a good fit at this level locally when on the turf a couple starts back, and she's a good alternative to the strong chalk drawn outside of her.

      Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

      Del Mar - Race #3
#5 Positivity Battled from the rail in his only start, gets a better post here and can make a serious run; has worked like an outstanding performer with three bullet works. Could be the real deal.
#3 Touchdown Brown Ran off to an easy score at Santa Anita in his only start and dropped a bullet work last weekend; talented and a big player.
#1 Good With People Romped at Del Mar in his only start and will take a lot of play in his return; would not be a surprise.
Race Summary Positivity put away early challengers and drew clear, which is not easy at first asking and from the rail; can handle the stakes company here.
      Del Mar - Race #8
#2 Silardi Gave way in a stakes race last out and had won two straight going into that one; can be close-up throughout.
#6 Microrithms Was up in time in his last one, but that was in January 2019. Of course, Baffert will have him ready to run and he lands in a good spot.
#8 Jamming Eddy Ran to a long lead and held on for the win in his latest and should have no problem with the shorter distance.
Race Summary Sildari was in too tough last time and can dig in on this class drop; distance suits him.
      Del Mar - Race #10
#2 Ce Ce The Beholder and Apple Blossom winner (both Grade 1 races) tired to third in her latest but has been a factor in all races. Can rally for the win.
#3 Hard Not to Love Held on for second in the Santa Marta and seems more effective in sprints; forward factor.
#5 Ollie's Candy Lost the Phipps to Shes a Julie by a neck and was a head short of Ce Ce in the Apple Blossom; hard-trying mare could get the goodies.
Race Summary Ce Ce brings her best most of the time and has been outstanding this year; has the late move to be effective in this pace scenario.

            Race 7 - Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $4000 Class Rating: 65

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE IN 2020. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 120 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $2,000.

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 8 PEPPER FANTASY 3/1
            # 7 VERNON CAT 5/1
            # 1 BOOZIN TIME 2/1
PEPPER FANTASY appears to be the wager in here. With Simpson in the saddle guiding him, this gelding ought to be able to break out early in this race. When a conditioner brings any animal back this soon it is a positive signal. He should have a strong outing versus this softer group. VERNON CAT - With Stewart getting the mount, watch out for this animal. Has a very solid shot in this competition if you like back class. BOOZIN TIME - Has posted solid speed figures in dirt sprint races in the past. Could best this group here, showing decent numbers of late.

              Prairie Meadows - Race #5 - Post: 5:46pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,500 Class Rating: 71

              Rating:

              #7 ERRATIC BEHAVIOR (ML=9/5)
              #6 CHANCE OF FROST (ML=5/2)

ERRATIC BEHAVIOR - Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. Don't often see a lucrative ROI like +105. This rider/trainer tandem has done well together over the last 12 months. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. This entrant wins a lot of cash per race around the track. I believe she will add to the lifetime earnings in this race. CHANCE OF FROST - This animal ran off the board at Prairie Meadows in the last race in the mud. She should improve in this field without a sloppy track. Popular handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a layoff generally leads to a big effort. Should run big today. You have to like that recent race speed rating, 71, which is the top last race rating of this group. In the last race at Prairie Meadows this equine finished ahead of today's M/L favorite. Potential play if the public follows the M/L odds.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BLONDIES MINE (ML=4/1), #1 EMMY GOT EVEN (ML=6/1), #3 PERFECT BEAUTY (ML=8/1),

BLONDIES MINE - Just cannot play this questionable contender. Didn't show me anything in the last race or on June 29th. EMMY GOT EVEN - The Brain always warns me to keep away from horses in sprint contests that haven't hit the board in short distance races of late. PERFECT BEAUTY - Tough to bet on any animal like this that didn't hit the board after the long layoff and comes right back.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #7 ERRATIC BEHAVIOR to win if we can get at least 7/5 odds
              EXACTA WAGERS: Box [6,7]

WE GOT IT COVERED is my choice. Must be considered here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. Blinkers on should be the key here. Recorded a strong speed rating in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. KINDERGARTENGRADER - Ought to be considered a solid contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone.

                  Woodbine - Race #7 - Post: 4:23pm - Optional Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $60,300 Class Rating: 90

                  Rating:

                  #3 TRICKY MAGICIAN (ML=8/1)
                  #6 LUCAS N' LORI (ML=7/2)
                  #8 BEXAR (ML=9/2)

TRICKY MAGICIAN - The jock/handler duo of Wilson and Casse has a strong return on investment together. Lower weight assigned of -5. In my opinion, a movement of five is important, so this gelding falls into this category. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where he finished in his last race (fifth). Should improve right here in this race, with some respectable odds. LUCAS N' LORI - Hernandez rode this animal for the first time last time around the track and comes right back this time. Got to appreciate a good work horse. This gelding's last morning work was second fastest of the day for the distance. Last time around the track, ran the last quarter in less than 25 ticks. To me, that's a good indication he can close well, and should be right there at the finish line today. Attard has a very solid win percent in turf routes. This gelding should be in shape and ready to win. BEXAR - Using this jock/conditioner combination is a good move. Stein was aboard this gelding last time around the track and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. I like to play this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a good contest within the last thirty days. After a pair of sprints, he's routing today, which is probably what this gelding wants to do.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CALL IT A WRAP (ML=3/1), #7 ZOOLOGICAL (ML=6/1), #4 HOLD'EMFORRANSOM (ML=8/1),

CALL IT A WRAP - This entrant has no victories in his last ten attempts. He's probably not worth the price on the win end today. ZOOLOGICAL - Tough to back a three-year old meeting older for the first time. Probably needs more seasoning. Didn't do alot last out. Probably won't do much running in today's race. HOLD'EMFORRANSOM - The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this animal as a likely underpriced equine.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - TRICKY MAGICIAN - You got to like this steed against this competition. He has the top turf number off his last race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #3 TRICKY MAGICIAN on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: 3 with [6,8]

                  TRIFECTA WAGERS:
                  Box [3,6,8] Total Cost: $6
                  SUPERFECTA WAGERS: [3,6,8] with [3,6,8] with [2,3,5,6,8] with [2,3,5,6,8] Total Cost: $36
