The Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees open a critical series tonight in the Bronx, and I'm rolling with the stripes in the series lid-lifter. Tampa Bay has played 35 games, the Yankees 32. Remember, there are only 60 games this season, so this series could mean something in the end.
The Rays are in first place by 3.5 games over the Yankees, who have won three straight after a lengthy skid. Tampa Bay has won five in a row and eight of 10, but could be running into a buzzsaw with the pinstripes handing the ball to Gerrit Cole.
The Yankees ace right-hander steps to the hill after being handed his first loss in 29 regular-season starts his last time out. While he allowed three home runs and five runs to the Braves over five innings, he was losing to Ian Anderson in his MLB debut. Trust me when I tell you Cole (4-1, 3.51) will be at his best today.
He faces the Rays for the third time this season, having struck out 10 batters in each of those starts without a decision. One of those includes Aug. 19, when Tampa Bay starter Tyler Glasnow was on the hill and the Rays won. Glasnow is on the hill again tonight, so that's even more added motivation.
Trust me, this is an important game and an important series. And Cole is the trigger man to get it all going.
Lay the run line.
