Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 5 Analysis

    September 8, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Woodbine Mohawk Park has an 11-race card ready to roll tonight. The 0.20 Early Pick 5 starts the program, it has a $100,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus. Last night, the Early Pick 5 pool was over $130,000.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 1

2-Emotions Riches (7/2)-Raced well versus better and now faces a bunch of new faces. May have a case of 2nd-itis. But this could be the field to break through and take a picture.
3-Harry (9/2)-Sluggish starts against tougher, so has had trouble putting things together for a victory but Henry sticks. Could be a player with an alert start.
6-Highland Mowgli (4-1)-Gingras takes over from Henry and this 2-year-old has three 2nd place finishes in 6 starts. Maybe tonight a new set of hands will do the trick and lead to a picture. The past winners are not in this field.

    Race 2

2-Zephry Seelster (4-1)-Seemed to be improving and was bet down to 9/5 at this class last week and caught a bad shuffle. Jamieson should have this filly no worse than 2nd at the first call and can be there at the wire.
4-Saulsbrook Flashy (3-1)-Has had excuses in last couple, now drops and draws well. Appears to have the speed to be a player as long as the trip is smooth.
8-Sure Do Love You (7/2)-Has been off since 6/23 but did qualify well on 9/1. Roy tuned-up this well bred filly in 156.2 and it wouldn't be a surprise if she fired hot off the bench.

    Race 3

2-Adrenaline Rush (9/2)-Comes off 2 nice wins, 1 here the other at Sarnia and McClure will be aboard again. In the 7/20 win at Mohawk this 2-year-old rolled the back half in 56.2, so best to respect.
7-Metallica (3-1)-Broke at Sar in a Grassroots race and before that did well here. Has enough gate speed to get a good early seat and should be in the hunt throughout.
10-Big Bang Bang (6-1)-Another who comes off a break this time at GeoD. Does have good speed and has been rolling late in the mile. Could pop at a nice price if Drury can put in play by the top of the lane and pace is honest.

    Race 4

4-Cool Music (7/2)-Had a nice try at this level on 8/24 but has been starting slowly in recent races. Draws well and makes 1st start for new barn. Using and will hope for a smooth journey.
5-Only Take Cash (5-1)-4-year-old mare fits with this group. Henry has options from this post, should be a main player and the morning line might be generous.
8-Villefranche As (4-1)-Stepping-up after losing as a post-time favorite is not a usual go-to. Roy got her going off cover at the tune of 55.3 for the 2nd half, but it was too little too late versus a strong winner. Looking for an earlier move and should be a solid price.

    Race 5

3-Mustang Beach (7/2)-Gets post relief after starting the last 3 races from post 8. Did manage to win here back on 8/6 at 41-1. Last start was at Sarnia on 8/22 when they went to the half in 53.3 and this 2-year old did hold position to the wire. Is off 17-days but seems to be a cut above the rest.

    0.20 Early Pick 5

    2,3,6/2,4,8/2,7,10/4,5,8/3
    Total Bet=$16.20

      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

      Finger Lakes - Race #1
#4 Inhonorofowenjr Newcomer was a close 2nd in her local bow, which was also her first for Wright, and, with that behind her, she may improve, yet she may not even have to against this crew; look out.
#5 Choose Happiness ML favorite makes her first start for Jeremiah after running on the NYRA circuit for Mott, so she'll be bet hard, but drop and trainer switch make her tough to trust; underlaid favorite.
#3 Pippi MSW dropper will like this group a lot better than her last two, as she was simply in too tough, so if she moves forward just a smidge she'll be in with a stretch chance; the one to fear late.
Race Summary You won't get rich on the 4 but if they go bonkers on the 5 then that 3-1 ML probably sticks, and that seems like fair value off her last, so play her to win and place, and especially to kick off the early Pk4 as well, as she likely won't be favored, which is a great way to start off a sequence.
      Finger Lakes - Race #4
#5 Too Much Drama Parx invader goes for a Chris Englehart barn that has had success moving runners around this year, and this miss has been facing better, so with an expected honest pace signed on, she figures to be rolling late; mows them all down.
#2 Chasing Losses Slight dropper will be favored for Rice and Gomez, who are 34% together here, but this miss didn't improve on the drop from the NYRA circuit, now she dips again, and you know she'll be hammered at the windows too; tread lightly here.
#4 Donna'sway Price player is another who should like the pace, as she'll be able to settle early and presumably be in the right spot off the far turn, so while a win seems a bit out of reach at 1-for-28, she has run underneath 11 times; can spice up the exotics.
Race Summary That 6-1 ML seems mighty fair on the 5, as not only is this a class drop, but there's also a pace that could flatter her too, so play her in all the slots, and especially to end the early Pk4, and kick off the Pk5 as well, since a win over a heavy favorite like the 2 would knock out a lot of tickets.
      Finger Lakes - Race #6
#6 Lofty Reason Dangerous sort was 53-1 on debut and flew home from 11th to be 4th, and she gets more speed to rally into, and an extra half-furlong too off the perfect tightener; love her chances here.
#8 Maddy Black ML favorite has speed and an attack post, so she'll trip out from here, and the 2nd last time over the pick from the parking lot was strong, though there's no value here; still, plenty scary.
#3 Zismokin Gal Logical contender figures on paper but we've said that before, and now she's 8-0-3-3, so you start to get the impression she's not too intent on winning a horse race; underneath once again.
Race Summary That 6-1 ML on the pick seems like value galore, as she already showed she can play with these, and she has more upside than the 3 and 8 combined, so play her aggressively in all the slots, while getting some added value by keying her in the Pk5, and in the late Pk4 as well, as she tipped her hand last time, and it looks like it's all systems go today.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Mountaineer - Race #1
#1 Mr. Granite Might wind up getting a decent go of things from the inside in a spot where there is plenty of pace drawn outside of him. Hoping he winds up in the pocket.
#6 Creaky Cricket Cutback pace might is still quick enough to be near the splits going short, and he woke up when getting back to this level last out.
#2 Royal Silk Dropper couldn't hang with starter company last out, but he has some back races with similar that look very competitive. Not out of it at a price.
Race Summary Mr. Granite meets plenty of pace that might leave him just a little bit outrun in the early going, and the price figures to be right in a tough race.
        Mountaineer - Race #5
#7 Musabaqa Rolled a softer group last time out when getting back over the local footing where she is a perfect 3-for-3, and landing another against this tougher group is well within reach.
#4 Opeongo Tough to argue with the recent form that includes a pair of wins, but her best game right now may be on the grass.
#2 Sharpin Steps up off three easy wins, and she's quick enough to get a good trip right near the top. She certainly earned the hike.
Race Summary Musabaqa can get a great trip from right up on the splits, and he has shown an affinity for the local footing and compeititon.
        Mountaineer - Race #7
#5 Zafir Has rediscovered the good form for this barn, and he easily handled a softer group last time out. Forward player can land this.
#1 Reform School Has a very high ceiling that can make him tough here, but he draws the fence with with speed and will meet a bit of other pace.
#2 John's Rock Cutback player has been in with some good groups and may be able to come calling late for a share. He feels like at least a bit of a stretch on top.
Race Summary Zafir brings good form and some solid tactical pace to this one, and he draws better than Reform School, who may be under pressure from the fence from the start.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Pocono Downs - Race #1
#6 SOUTHWIND FROST Earned top recent fig in ‘amateur’ race, could upstage in-money finishes.
#9 HOT SUMMER NIGHT Appeared to have some trot when rival he followed broke stride.
#2 TRUEMASS VOLO Rallied into fast pace to finish second at 58-1 at notch above.
Race Summary Southwind Frost, a check-getting type against similar company at the Meadowlands, starts fresh and could get the jump on his main rivals for Team Miller. Play 6-2 and 6-9 exactas.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#2 EMOTION RICHES Chased 1-to-5 shot around the track, draws favorably in second start locally.
#6 HIGHLAND MOWGLI Three seconds in last four starts, gets Gingras.
#9 HAWAII Discount latest, filly showed promise in prior two starts.
Race Summary Emotions Riches benefitted when two rivals went off stride, but he chased the 1-to-5 favorite and finished second in an improved effort. Play 2-6 and 2-9 exactas.
          Hoosier Park - Race #3
#5 RIGGINS ART Outrun with no Lasix, wake-up candidate in this spot.
#2 ALWAYS RELENTLESS Flashed speed with Lasix before running into ‘interference.’
#8 SKIPPING STONE Returns from Scioto Downs, where he was beaten fave twice.
Race Summary Riggins Art failed to latch onto cover twice and was no factor in his latest start without Lasix. But he chased the favorites through a :55.3 back half two back and chased a :26.4 final quarter from post 10 in the race prior. He’s an all-or-nothing type, so play 5-2 and 5-8 exactas.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Indiana Grand - Race #2
#5 Jingle Gave way in a stakes race last time and had been rounding into good form; broke his maiden two back and is a late threat.
#6 Proud N Famous Has good speed and can get on the front end of this one; fits well here.
#7 Cielo Azul Finished well and got his first win last time out and looks to be interested in getting a share of the early lead.
Race Summary Jingle was overmatched last time but has the talent to compete in this N2L allowance spot; can dig in vs. this competition.
            Indiana Grand - Race #6
#4 Reelfoot Improved late for third and looks like he's sitting on a big effort; Asmussen puts him at his lowest level and he can respond to this move.
#5 Royal Liege Was an even fourth on turf at Belterra last out and can make a run vs. these; could be the one to hold off.
#2 Not Now Rand Was a closing second at Churchill two back and was claimed out of that by Patrick; makes second for the barn and can improve in this spot.
Race Summary Reelfoot makes his first turf start and has the pedigree to handle it; rider Jermaine Bridgmohan has won 5 of his last 15 and fits this one.
            Indiana Grand - Race #7
#1 Blonde Moment Was competitive in New York last fall and was third in a hundred-grander here; didn't perform well at Tampa Bay but should improve as she returns to her native state.
#3 Ever Wonder Has overwhelmed rivals in four of her last six and has traveled well comes in from Thistledown won here two back. Solid player on the front end.
#4 Piedi Bianchi Ships from New York for Carlos Martin and most recentlytired in the Perfect Sing Stakes at Saratoga; was a distance third in the G2 Ruffian at Belmont and last appeared in Indiana when she won the Fran Slocum vs. Indiana-breds.
Race Summary Blonde Moment starts out at 15-1 and has the best chance to score an upset over heavily favored Piedi Bianchi and well played Ever Wonder. Can get a good stalking trip and might benefit from a ground-saving run.

NBA public betting, line movement September 8
                      Patrick Everson

LeBron James and the Lakers meet Jeff Green and the Rockets on Tuesday in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals. The SuperBook opened Los Angeles 5.5-point chalk and moved to -5.

NBA betting odds are up as the playoffs roll on with a pair of conference semifinal games on the Tuesday docket. The Los Angeles Lakers meet the Houston Rockets in a prime-time Game 3, preceded by Game 5 of the Miami Heat-Milwaukee Bucks series.

The SuperBook at Westgate provided insights on NBA opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Tuesday’s matchups.

                      NBA line movement

After getting dumped by 15 in Game 1, the Lakers fended off the Rockets 117-109 in Game 2 to draw even in the best-of-7 series. For Game 3, Los Angeles opened as a 5.5-point favorite, the line ticked to -5 Monday morning and stuck there through Monday night at The SuperBook. The total opened at 224 and reached 225.5 in fairly short order before dialing back to 225 late Monday night.

Milwaukee lost Giannis Antetokounmpo to a sprained ankle in the first half of Sunday’s Game 4, yet stunningly avoided a series sweep. The Bucks forced overtime against the Heat and ultimately prevailed 118-115 to move within 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.

Antetokounmpo is questionable for Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. ET start, but the line movement would indicate bettors and oddsmakers expect him to play. The SuperBook opened at Heat -3, initially moved to -3.5, then dialed down to -2 by Monday night.

                      NBA public betting

The Consensus, often a good indicator of public betting, is once again on the Rockets, with Houston landing 60 percent of early picks against the Lakers. Heat-Bucks was almost dead two-way late Monday evening, with a slight lean to Miami, which was grabbing 52 percent of Consensus picks.
