    Jeff Siegel's Gulfstream Analysis/Wagering Strategies - 12/3/20

    December 3, 2020
Jeff Siegel’s Gulfstream Park Analysis & Wagering Strategies
    Thursday, December 3, 2020

    *

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “Daily Analysis and Wagering Strategies” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
    *
The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes.
    *
    *
Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    RACE 1: Post: 12:35 ET Grade: B-
    Use: 1-Serenade Kitten; 2-Cheerleader Barb; 9-Sum Nation

Forecast: Sum Nation didn’t run badly in her debut when a too-little, too-late closing fourth in a maiden $40,000 in October at GPW and today shows up on the class drop for new trainer S. Joseph, Jr., whose record with the first-off-the-claim angle is nothing less than remarkable (36%). With the switch to “go to” rider E. Zayas, we’re expecting this In Summation filly to produce a significant forward move, her poor outside draw notwithstanding. Serenade a Kitten lands the good rail, adds blinkers, and is another that is likely to improve with a race under her belt after finishing fifth as the favorite in a performance that was compromised by self-caused trouble. Yet another second-timer likely to step forward is Cheerleader Barb, who finished with interest after a sluggish start in her only outing. Her inside draw guarantees a ground-saving trip.
    *
    *
    RACE 2: Post: 1:03 ET Grade: B-
    Use: 2-Candy Crushem; 3-Benefactor; 4-Mustang Cat

Forecast: Let’s go for a bit of a price in this wide-open mid-level claiming sprint. Benefactor was graded stakes-placed over this track in his younger days, and while his recent form looks bleak the son of More Than Ready may be ready to perk up in his first-off-the-claim for a capable outfit (20% with this angle). A recent bullet half mile workout (:47 1/5) catches the eye, as does the switch to hot-riding P. Lopez, so at 6-1 on the morning line he may worth a bit of gamble. Candy Crushem has the route-to-sprint angle we like and is a two-time winner over the Gulfstream Park main track. He remains above his claim level – a good sign - and this easier group is well within his capabilities. Mustang Cat crushed a $6,250 field at GPW at this extended sprint trip while earning a number that makes him dangerous despite the triple jump in class. This barn runs ‘em where they belong, so the class hike can be taken as a sign of confidence.
    *
    *
    RACE 3: Post: 1:31 ET Grade: C
    Use: 3-Shang’s Sister; 8-Julie Bird

Forecast: Shang’s Sister has little to beat in this moderate maiden claimer for juveniles and with the addition of blinkers the daughter of Paynter should be prominent throughout, perhaps even on the lead. Julie Bird was favored in the same race that ‘Sister exits and is another likely to improve against this easier group. We’ll try to survive and advance using just these two, but it’s a chaotic affair so tread lightly, spread deeply, or pass.
    *
    *
    RACE 4: Post: 2:00 ET Grade: B-
    Use: 1-Inedatequila; 4-Assume Control; 9-Paynter Fest

Forecast: Inedatequila has won her last three by daylight when facing restricted foes; today she tackles open company but based on her rising speed figures and her clever score over this track and distance in September she looks to have a reasonable chance to extend her streak. Assume Control ran into a buzzsaw in a fast, highly-rated race at GPW in a recent restricted $8,000 affair, settling for second (beaten 10 lengths) but earning a speed figure that actually charts quite well with this group. A three-time winner over the local main track, the daughter of Take Charge Indy projects to settle into a good stalking spot and then have every chance from there. Paynter Fest, third in the same race ‘Control exits, has finished in the frame in her last eight starts and is probably worth including somewhere on your ticket as well.
    *
    *
    RACE 5: Post: 2:30 ET Grade: B+
    Single: 6-La Cara Bonita

Forecast: La Cara Bonita is a first-off-the-claim automatic play for V. Barboza, Jr., whose stats with this angle is off-the-charts ridiculous (53% with a massive flat-bet profit in a sample size of 53). The Point of Entry filly was third as the choice in an open $12,500 affair when last seen in June and today shows up in a restricted (nw-2) $20,000 seller while being re-equipped with blinkers and picking up L. Saez. At 5/2 on the morning line she’s a single on our ticket.
    *
    *
    RACE 6: Post: 3:00 ET Grade: B+
    Single: 1-West Will Power

Forecast: West Will Power earned a monstrous speed figure when improving his perfect record to two-for-two in an entry-level main track miler at Monmouth Park in October and today moves up another notch while backing up to a one-turn mile. The son of Bernardini retains regular rider J. Bravo and projects to enjoy a good second flight, stalking trip from his inside draw. A series of outstanding recent workouts at Palm Beach Downs should have him fit and ready, so at 8/5 on the morning line he’s a logical top pick and rolling exotic single.
    *
    *
    RACE 7: Post: 3:30 ET Grade: B-
    Use: 3-Uncle Fun; 8-Turlough; 10-Purgin

Forecast: Uncle Fun drops to the maiden $25,000 level for the first time, adds blinkers, and shows a runner-up effort two races back over this course and distance that is good enough to beat this field. We’re expecting him to be along in time, but we’ll also include a couple of others on our rolling exotic ticket for protection. Turlough is a first-timer from the T. Pletcher barn, and while his appearance in this modest spot doesn’t inspire confidence he certainly won’t have to be any kind of world beater to be competitive. The barn is strong with debut runners (21%) and this homebred son of English Channel certainly is bred to run long on the lawn. Purgin shows a couple of dangerous angles – he’s a first-time gelding and is removing blinkers – so there’s every expectation of improvement, though the connections don’t inspire confidence. You can toss him in on a ticket or two as a back-up.
    *
    *
    RACE 8: Post: 4:00 ET Grade: B
    Use: 5-Ensign Parker; 7-Beaster

Forecast: Ensign Parker looked quite good graduating at GPW in a maiden $50,000 sprint last month and earned a speed figure that should be good enough for a repeat tally in this starter optional claimer for juveniles. The son of Soldat has improved in each of his three outings and we suspect the trend will continue today. Beaster also was a big figure maiden claiming winner last time out at GPW and if he can turn in two alike he’ll be a threat right back.. At 8-1 on the morning line you have to use him somewhere.
    *
    *
    RACE 9: Post: 4:30 ET Grade: B
    Use: 4-I’m Prayingforthat; 5-Miss Miami

Forecast: I’m Prayingforthat returns to grass after disappointing efforts in a pair of off-the-turf sprints in which she performed below form. If the weather cooperates and this race remains on grass, she could snap back in a big way, especially over a course and distance that she clearly loves (three wins in six starts). Miss Miami is double jumped in class after a nice turf sprint score at GPW that earned a useful speed figure. She’s a two-time winner over the local lawn and projects to draft into a nice stalking position and then have her chance from the top of the lane to the wire.
    *
    *
    RACE 10: Post: 5:00 ET Grade: B
    Use: 2-All Good; 10-El Pillo; 12-Semper Fi

Forecast: First-time gelding All Good flopped badly at 30 cents on the dollar in an off-the-turf event last month at Churchill Downs and was claimed for $25,000 by M. Maker, who raises the son of Will Take Charge to $35,000 in a sure sign that he likes the new merchandise. This will be this gelding’s first try on grass – there’s no reason he won’t like it – and from a good inside draw combined with the switch to the barn’s “go-to” rider L. Saez there’s quite a bit to like. Semper Fi is another trying grass for the first time and also will be making his first start around two-turns. The outside draw does him no favors but at 12-1 on the morning he’s worth tossing in. El Pillo has a prior win over the course and numbers that fit. He’s most effective on the front end and if he can secure that kind of trip the son of Treasure Beach could take this group a long way.

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Laurel Park - Race #5
#7 Peace With Honor Showed some versatility in that finishing run last time out, and she should be able to get a better run of things today from closer to the splits.
#4 Be Good Steps up after an improved effort last time out when chasing a runaway winner, and she should be in line for a pretty good trip from close range again.
#2 Zola B Not totally sold that her form is going to come back around, but the price should be right to try and get her in the gimmicks. Her two-back dirt run was solid with cheaper, and she could prove useful underneath.
Race Summary Peace With Honor should be in line for a great trip today, and she showed that she belong with the local types off that good finishing run last out.
      Laurel Park - Race #6
#5 Coconut Cake With a few players in here likely to flash a bit of pace, she might get a great run of things from a spying spot. She'll need her very best -- and maybe then some -- but the price should be fair enough.
#8 Le Weekend Drops out of stakes company for this one, and she draws well to prompt the pace from the outside. Her recent local record does leave a bit to be desired, so demand every bit of the 9/2 ML offering.
#6 Little Miss Raelyn Has turned into a new horse since adding blinkers, and she owns a mild rating gear that should lead to a perfect speed/pressing trip up top. The one to beat off the bench.
Race Summary Coconut Cake steps up again after rattling off a third score in a row, and we may not have seen her best yet with just four starts under her belt.
      Laurel Park - Race #7
#5 Big Engine He's a pretty reliable runner, and that recent Belmont form looks just a slight cut better than what the rest of these have to offer. Wouldn't be interested in anything much shorter than the 5/2 ML price.
#6 Wendell Fong Guessing we'll see a bounce-back effort after the no-show in the slop at Belmont, and this is one of the softest groups he has seen in quite some time. Maybe.
#2 Factor It In Might need a touch more pace than he's likely to get in here, there are some local runs from earlier this year that looks very competitive with this group at what should be a solid number on the board.
Race Summary Big Engine has a right to be tough with these. He's got just enough speed to avoid being outrun in the early stages, and he rarely fails to fire.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #1
#2 CHEYENE REIJANE Should sit ideal trip for red-hot barn in repeat attempt.
#5 BIG MACH No match for the favorite but finished second in 1:52.
#8 SHOREVIEW Good first gear, been coming up short in the stretch, moves inside out.
Race Summary Cheyenne Reijane wore down the 3-to-5 favorite and won at this level, now enters a 34-percent barn in a wide-open race. Play 2-5 and 2-8 exactas.
        Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#1 DONTBLVMEJUSTWATCH Late runner was compromised at half-mile track, can factor at a price.
#2 GIDDY UP MAX Finished in the money in four straight for Moreau.
#4 WELL ELL Led long way as the favorite at bullring in his last start.
Race Summary Dontblvmejustwatch drew posts 8 and 10 the last time in town, then met short-priced winners in his last two starts after he finished second at Flamboro. He draws the rail tonight in a weak field, so play 1-2 and 1-4 exactas.
        Pompano Park - Race #8
#4 ASCOT ENCOUNTER A Re-awakened in latest, upset possibility on the front end.
#5 ER HOTSHOT Solid numbers, better starting spot, hot barn.
#6 WILDCAT HILTON Took money, paced evenly in local audition.
Race Summary Ascot Encounter A set a rapid pace and held well until mid-stretch. He can use his speed well in this field and is too good to pass up at 25-1 on the morning line. Play a 4-5-6 exacta box.

          Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

          Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#1 Powerful Ally Tired going long on turf and returns to preferred dirt and been in much stronger races that this; dropping in for the win.
#4 Mustang Cat Comes off a somewhat monstrous effort running seven furlongs vs. bottom level claimers; held on through rapid fractions and is worth a look on the step up in class.
#2 Candy Crushem Had been close to fast fractions in longer races and likely will appreciate the cutback to seven furlongs.
Race Summary Powerful Ally has an overall class advantage, can benefit from running a shorter distance on dirt and has the speed to be in it throughout.
          Gulfstream Park - Race #6
#5 Youcantcatchcurlin Will probably be a good price and comes in off a mile win at GPW; has taken three of his last five and should be taken seriously.
#4 Mexican Wonder Boy Took the lead late and was caught in the final stride of his latest at Keeneland; he was claimed that day by Gargan, who is good with new acquisitions and has won three of his last four.
#1 West Will Power Was a clear winner in his two races (at Monmouth) and looks like another runner for the connections; this one runs for the Breen stable and will be well supported.
Race Summary Youcantcatchcurlin closed off a slow pace and finished well last out; Curlin runner sharp at the distance and is good at making up ground.
          Gulfstream Park - Race #9
#4 I'm Prayingforthat Has won the last three times she ran five furlongs on this course and makes her second off the claim for Arias; can adjust to pace and likely will be strong today.
#6 Sunset Empire Lost by a head in her bid to win a third straight. She is entered as main track only and is a standout if this one comes off the turf.
#1 Awsum Roar Won here in January and has run well on occasion vs. tough company; can be closeout throughout this one.
Race Summary I'm Prayingforthat absolutely loves the Gulfstream Park turf race, especially at today's distance of five furlongs; can adjust to any pace they put up against her.

Race 5 - Maiden Special Weight - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $40000 Class Rating: 71

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 123 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 4 BE GOOD 3/1
                # 2 ZOLA B 12/1
                # 3 POLISH COOKIE 15/1
I think BE GOOD is a competitive choice. Ought to be carefully examined - I like the numbers from the last contest. The average Equibase class figure of 63 makes this one hard to beat. Have to take a chance on this filly with the sound earnings per start in dirt route races. ZOLA B - Her 64 average has this filly with among the best speed figs in this event. With one of the top jockeys in terms of returns at the window, don't count this filly out.

                  Turfway Park - Race #5 - Post: 8:12pm - Maiden Special - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $32,000 Class Rating: 82

                  Rating:

                  #8 CHAMPAGNE DIET (ML=3/1)
                  #12 CAPTAIN GINNY B (ML=20/1)
                  #1 CARA CATERINA (ML=5/1)

CHAMPAGNE DIET - Casse drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping info to figure that this horse should be one of the top contenders at this level. CAPTAIN GINNY B - As the only speed freak in the race, I expect this filly to be long gone. The jockey and handler combination have a beneficial ROI when they combine forces. I think the shorter trip will help this filly stay the trip. Trainer Austin moves this horse to a lower class rank to face a lower rated field. Look for a nice effort in this race. CARA CATERINA - Casse moves this filly to the dirt today. Look for a significant improvement from the most recent race on the turf.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #11 IT'S MINE (ML=5/2), #6 JAZZY LADY (ML=5/1),

IT'S MINE - Based on the pace scenario in this event, this horse doesn't fit in here. With a single front-runner and this equine having to race from behind, she sure has a tough assignment. I usually try to beat these types of morning-line choices off the extended vacation. JAZZY LADY - This sustainer will probably be rolling fast from far back much too late to make a mark in this event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #8 CHAMPAGNE DIET to win if you can get odds of 2/1 or more
                  EXACTA WAGERS: 8 with [1,12]

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 2 CANDY CRUSHEM 4/1
                    # 4 MUSTANG CAT 3/1
                    # 5 SOUTH SEA 5/2
I've got to go with CANDY CRUSHEM. He has put up competitive numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well versus this group. Had one of the top speed figures of this field in his last competition. Demonstrates the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 91 speed rating which is one of the best in this group of horses in this race. MUSTANG CAT - I like the rider on this gelding - decent chance to win the race. Looks very strong to be up on the lead at the first call. SOUTH SEA - Dibona has a very solid win percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. Dibona has him trained admirably to break promptly out of the gate.

                      Remington Park - Race #2 - Post: 7:35pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,000 Class Rating: 62

                      Rating:

                      #4 BUBBLE LINE (ML=8/1)
                      #6 UNEXPECTED STORM (ML=4/1)
                      #5 CATSKILL GHOST (ML=10/1)

BUBBLE LINE - Looking at today's class rating, this pony is up against an easier group than last time around the track at Remington Park. I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a come back. UNEXPECTED STORM - Goncalves comes to race again after getting to know the filly in the last event. CATSKILL GHOST - I like this first-timer mainly because her morning drills for this have been here at Remington Park. This trainer has a highly positive ROI with 1st time starters. A great handicapping angle is getting Lasix for the first time. Craddock gives it to this one for this race.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SHEZA MACHIAVELLI (ML=3/1), #9 WHATEVER COMES (ML=9/2), #7 GRAY GIRL (ML=6/1),

SHEZA MACHIAVELLI - This vulnerable equine hasn't been near the victor at the wire of late. WHATEVER COMES - When scrutinizing today's class figure, she will have to record a much better speed fig than in the last race to compete in this dirt sprint. GRAY GIRL - Difficult to invest in this questionable contender in today's event. Make her show you something in a short distance race before you wager on her in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs. The eighth place finish position in the last race was not the best. It looks like too much early zip is on board in this contest. This speed merchant will likely get baked on the front end.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 BUBBLE LINE is going to be the play if we are getting 4/1 or better

Poland's Energa Basket Liga leader Gora is at home vs 5th place Lubin. Although Gora scores a lot this is a matchup between Lubin's #1 defense and Gora's #2 defense. My numbers have this game total at 158, which is 11.5 points under the line. That gives some value to bet the under. Bet Under 169.5 for one quarter unit.

My numbers say Olmpiakos is a 2 point favorite in this spot. I am not sure if I trust that but the Moscow 7-2 record is deceiving because most of their last wins were close. I would not take Olympiakos money line but +9 seems about right. Bet a quarter unit on Olympiakos +9.

The Bulldogs finally get back on the field for their first game...and last game of the regular (nothing regular about this season!) season as they play the Mean Green of North Texas early on this Thursday night. Despite being off for over a month and despite their top wide receiver Adrian Hardy opting-out for this last game to prepare for the NFL draft, I will look for the OVER to be the play in a game that features 2 defenses that have had a hard time stopping teams when they are on the field.

Louisiana Tech's defense has allowed 30 points or more in 5 of their 7 games played this season and the Over has connected in 4 of those 7 games this year. The team is ranked # 88 in overall pass defense and # 68 in rush defense and their 32.8 points per game has them at # 86 in the land. This tells me that North Texas should be able to find the endzone often enough to get this game on its way to the Over column, as they do score the football at 34.3 points per game.

Speaking of North Texas, their defense comes in with some numbers that are even worse than their opponents, as the Mean Green stand at # 118 in pass defense and are ranked at # 121 in rush defense. For the season they allow 41 points per game which has them at # 123 in the FBS for the year! Surprisingly, the Mean Green's past 2 games have stayed Under the total, but for the year 4 of their 7 games played have landed in the Over column.

These teams played 3 straight Overs between 2014-16, but the trend has been reversed with 3 straight Unders the last 3 years in their Conference USA meetings. I am looking for the Under trend to be snapped tonight at 3 straight.

Take the Over in Louisiana Tech and North Texas.
