Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 5 Analysis

Tonight, Woodbine Mohawk Park has a competitive card with 10 races scheduled. The very popular 0.20 Early Pick 5 starts the action. The sequence has a $100,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

1-Electrapedia (4-1)-Makes 2nd start for new connections. Was off for 5 weeks before last start which was an even effort in the slop. Sports an 0-3 record on an off-track, so looking for better and should be forwardly placed.
3-High Gear No Fear (5/2)-Winner of 2 in a row beat this entire field in last start. Draws well, barn has been good and there's no reason to leave out.
4-The First Chapter (3-1)-Was good 2 starts back and caught a rough trip in the slop in last. Jamieson should be able to work a better trip and he has options, looks like a threat at a fair price.

Race 2

4-Passion N Pearls (8-1)-Has been trying hard and gets post relief so will use looking for a more friendly trip. Camera shy filly could be over looked at the windows in a race with many question marks.
5-Oceanview Echo (4-1)-Drew off by 7 lengths at London and now steps up. McNair will probably send and hope the long stretch can be negotiated. Likes to win, using and will hope big track debut is a success.
8-Better Country (3-1)-Has been trying hard despite 0-9 record as post draws haven't been kind. In last 3 starts, 2 were from the 2nd tier. Roy should have in play and has faced better competition than the rest of the field.

Race 3

6-HP Bruxelles (9/2)-Last was in the slop, was off 3-weeks and had a tough trip so there were excuses. Beat this kind the start before from the 9-hole. Looking for a bounce back effort at a square price.
7-Life Is A Feast (4-1)-Jamieson takes the lines and there isn't much gate speed inside so he could be leaving. Has a post edge over #8 and chances go up with an alert start.
8-Nimbus Deo (7/2)-Has won 8 of 11 at Wbsb and will toss last break on a sloppy track. Regular pilot Filion returns and best to not overlook. Should be a player with a decent trip and this the 2nd start on Lasix.

Race 4

9-Darkest Secret (7/2)-McClure steers the other Moreau trainee, and this one has decent gate speed. The plan could be to leave, get on the engine, steal a quarter and take a picture. Best to respect that happening.
10-Sunshines Finest (3-1)-Filion's pick over the 9 just handled $8k claimers and now moves up. Most of this field aren't proven $10k claimers so chances for a repeat rests on a trip from the 2nd tier.

Race 5

7-A Boy Named Suuzz (7/2)-Beat the $17k claimers for 4th straight win. Now in for a $25k tag and still looks like a major player.
9-Cinnamack (3-1)-Raced big from post 8 in a determined effort to collar Choreographer last week. In for a $29,000 tag so has to find a way from an outside post gain. Drury is back between the pipes and should be in the hunt at the wire.

Mountaineer - Race #5

#3 Shezagoldgetter	She didn't fire in that last one, but her previous tries stack up nicely with these. I'd be intrigued at something like the 6/1 ML price with a good tracking trip in store for her.
#8 El a Vader	Finished comes off a career best effort, and she's a huge threat if she can wheel back with something similar. Still, that race feels a bit like an outlier in her form, so I wouldn't want the likely underlaid price.
#6 Coach Machen	She's sort of all or nothing on the engine, but this isn't a super deep race, so she has a big chance to stick around for a piece.
Race Summary	Shezagoldgetter is capable of better than she showed in that last one, and she has proven a good fit with this kind of company in recent starts.

Mountaineer - Race #7

#3 Kings Highway	Can probably stick a bit closer in the early going this time around, and he'd be appealing at a mid-range price after proving that he handles two turns with the locals.
#6 Our Alibi	Just finished in front of most of these, including the top choice, but the price figures to be short off the kind of effort he may not repeat.
#1 Strong Heart	Tactical pace doesn't own much finishing punch, so he'll need to right near the top turning for home if he's going to grind out a win with these.
Race Summary	Kings Highway has run a couple of nice ones going long locally, and he has a chance to turn the tables on Our Alibi who could be sitting on at least a small step back.

Mountaineer - Race #8

#8 Treetop Flyer	Draws well to track the early splits, and he has been competitive with some pretty good groups in recent starts. Last time he tried this trip produced a perfect pressing score locally.
#3 Satellite Storm	Speed has done good work on the turf in recent starts, and his main track form wasn't super sharp last year. Form and class fit -- footing is at least a small question right now. Demand a fair price.
#3 Keller's Gold	Tough read. The recent form isn't really all that exciting, but he turned in some very fast races earlier this year that would make him competitive with these. But the 9/5 ML offering? Too short for me.
Race Summary	Treetop Flyer scored at this trip back in June, and he can find the right kind of spot from close range from a good draw for his style.

So final MatchDay of the Group Stage and I’m looking at a group that is already settled and taking Chelsea -1.5 over Krasnodar. Chelsea is the group winner, Krasnodar will finish 3rd and fall into the Europa League and nothing can change that. So with little to play for, I’m expecting both teams to have rotated sides for this match but Chelsea’s team B is far superior to Krasnodar’s. Chelsea also has the luxury of getting several players back from injury with Pulisic and Havertz returning to the lineup and likely to get minutes just to work themselves back into game speed, even if it’s only in a substitute role.
I won’t even get into the numbers behind Chelsea’s 4-0 beatdown of Krasnodar in their first meeting as it really doesn’t matter here, but it does show the talent disparity between these two teams.
One last thing I will mention is this will be Chelsea’s first Champions League match with fans in the stands. They played their first match with fans this past weekend in a 3-1 win over Leeds and the players were so excited to have fans back. You can bet Lampard and company will want to deliver another good performance for them even.

I've got to go with SEVEN JEWELS. Boasts solid speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of animals. She looks formidable in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. Must be carefully examined given the class of races run lately. SHE'S A FAIR CATCH - Have to bet on this money-making rider and handler duo. Could beat this group given the 62 speed figure recorded in her last outing. FRUHL'N AROUND - Is tough not to consider based on Equibase speed figs which have been decent - 53 avg - of late. With Saenz aboard her, this filly will probably be able to break out quickly for this event.

LOVE IN HER EYES - A win pct the likes of what Silvera and Ness have achieved together is outstanding. Sub-par try last time out at Gulfstream Park West was due to the off-going (she finished fourth). Expect better in this event on a fast track.

BRAVO REGINA - Any speed figure obtained on the soft turf must be taken with a grain of salt. NISBET BEACH - Really had to show me more than that last time around the track. Never made much of an impact. This stretch-runner should have a rough go of it to get up in time with the lack of pace in this race. B B'S ROCKET - That was merely not a very good showing in the last clash.

SARACEN - Is difficult not to look at given the company run in lately. Strong jock and trainer combo winning 21 percent of their races working together.

SATELLITE STORM - This gelding seems to run pretty good after a vacation. I have to believe that today's shorter trip should help this gelding.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 KELLER'S GOLD (ML=9/5), #1 SHADOW SURPRISE (ML=7/2), #8 TREETOP FLYER (ML=4/1),

KELLER'S GOLD - Hasn't been on the Mountaineer Park oval in the last three weeks. Cause for some concern. SHADOW SURPRISE - Looked like he may have had some physical problems when he ran on October 27th. This gelding raced surprisingly well on October 27th placing first, but hasn't even visited the track since then. Not really a good sign. TREETOP FLYER - This pony ran a run-of-the-mill speed figure last out. He shouldn't run better and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that figure.
