Al Cimaglia: Pompano Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    January 4, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Pompano Park comes out swinging in 2021 with a $30,000 guaranteed pool in both the Early and Late 0.50 Pick 4. My focus will be on the Late Pick 4 sequence which starts in Race 10 and has a very low 12% takeout.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 10

2-Loud Splash (3-1)-Drops to the softest spot this meet and with this post can be put in play early. MacDonald should be aggressive here and a 2-hole trip could be in the cards. This 5-year-old can bring a nice brush down the lane.
5-Feelin Lika Winner (5-1)-Wasn't Hennessey's choice and that's usually a red flag. But will use instead of the #6 who was 1-17 last year. Has been fading down the lane, but might be overlooked at the windows and could seal the deal this time.
7-Captain Velocity (7-1)-Shetler could be blasting out as the Captain went a 26.1 opening quarter last week. Might get the top without using quite as much gas, which helps chances at a nice price.
8-Dash Of Danger (7/2)-Steps-up after capturing an overdue win by exploding late in the mile. Will need a trip at this level but this race could set-up nicely for a repeat. Looks like a major player if pace is brisk and that seems probable.

    Race 11

6-Muscles For Life (8/5)-The reason to not single #7 is because Hennessey is the pilot. Most likely, the best chance for a win is to get the top and look to slow things down. It's a 2-horse race but Muscles needs to get a favorable trip to beat Caviar.
7-Dg's Caviar (5/2)-Winner of 4 straight at this class went off as big overlay in last. There is no chance of getting almost
4-1 this time. But anything close to the last effort will probably mean another trip to the winner's circle unless #6 can lock it down for about 3/8's of a mile.

    Race 12

1-Rub Ofthe Green N (9/2)-Makes 4th start since arriving from Ohio and didn't do much so far. But this looks like the softest field it has seen in south Florida. MacDonald steers and it could be time for an aggressive drive.
2-Brandon Hanover (5/2)-Beaten odds on chalk was used a couple of times in last and faded badly down the lane. Probably will be bet hard again but best to not dismiss. There isn't much gate speed except for the outside pair. So, if Hennessey can easily get the top, he might be able to put this field to sleep.
4-B Like Cruiser (2-1)-Drops to a spot to shine but is trip dependent and will need an honest pace. Ingraham needs to be aware and not start rolling too late.

    Race 13

1-Ev's Girl (8-1)-Bumps up after leaving from the 7-hole and getting a very efficient trip. This won't be as easy but still should be able to get a close-up seat. Looks to be worth a swing. Using instead of the program chalk who steps-up and has post 8.
4-Cantab Lindy (5-1)-Just missed in 1st race since 9/25 and stayed inside versus Open III company. Trainer owns, now bumps up a notch and will take that as a positive. MacDonald sticks and should be tighter. Has hit the board in 15 of 18 Pomp starts with 8 wins.
5-Sooo Handsome (5-1)-Did pass foes down the lane last week but started from post 7 and raced from the back of the pack. One of these days Plano may leave and not look back. Maybe that's the script tonight and should be a fair price.
6-My Uncle Cuz (9/2)-Blasted out an got on the engine in 1st Pompano start and came up a half-length short. Barn has won 2 of 8 in past 30 days and best to respect off of the last sharp effort.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Delta Downs - Race #4
#8 Birdie Call Solid debut effort when spying the splits and coming away easily late, and she should be able to work out another really good trip near the top on the move around two turns.
#2 My Kiki She was no match for stakes company when last seen in August, but she had run some competitive races prior to that. She should flash a bit of pace going two turns and may hang around for a piece at a price.
#3 Twin Sisters Drops out of a couple of dull runs with stakes company, but she has some pace to get involved in the early going, and this easier bunch might be much more to her liking.
Race Summary Birdie Call debuted with an pretty nice score, and while there is a chance she just loved the off going in that 25/1 upset, I'll take it at face value in hopes of getting something like the 4/1 ML offering.
      Delta Downs - Race #8
#4 Secular Nation Taking a big swing with this guy in a race with lots of sharp early pace. He's quick enough to stay somewhat in touch early, and he may wind up defaulting into a first-jump kind of trip. Price should be right.
#7 Boldor He'll have to fire fresh and rediscover some better form if he's going to score here, but he owns some back races that would make him really tough with these. Along late for a piece?
#6 Well Connected He'll meet some classier company than he's used to seeing in here, but he goes off the Diodoro claim with a really fast score under his belt last time out.
Race Summary Secular Nation is a bit of a stretch, but he has run well enough in a handful of similar stakes races to suggest he fits here on his best day, and the race shape may suit him well.
      Delta Downs - Race #9
#3 Stop the Friend Blinkers go back on for this one, and she has some back races while wearing them that would make her competitive with this kind. Worth a look at anything near the 9/2 ML offering.
#10 Louisiana Special She's the obvious one to beat, but she has had 14 chances already and drops in class again. Barn seems to be trying to simply graduate and/or lose her via the claim box. The big concern is she's a likely short price while cutting back, and she does her best work on the front end -- she may not get it here.
#9 I'll Fly Away The career debut wasn't all bad, but the form went the wrong way from there in a hurry. She drops for this one while making her local debut, and maybe she can fire fresh again with something better.
Race Summary Stop the Friend went evenly for this price last time out, but the blinkers go back on today, and that may get her back to something solid enough to handle a potentially vulnerable chalk.

        Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

        Mahoning Valley - Race #4
#4 Sister's Creed Ran off to an easy score vs. those just a step down from these and has taken two of her last three; speed makes her very dangerous.
#6 Sheza Fine Justice Makes her third start off the claim for Jeff Radosevich, who is hitting at a 26-percent rate. Was an easy winner last time and can mix it up shortly after the start.
#8 My Belle Michelle Won at this level two races back and then was third in an allowance last out; solid late move could catch the speed.
Race Summary Sister's Creed was impressive last out and can mix it up on the front end with these; one to catch.
        Mahoning Valley - Race #7
#1 Tapaway Tired in her first one here this season and is capable of running much better; can secure a ground-saving trip from just off the pace.
#3 Quality Man Can mix it up on the front end against this level and can stay for a major piece.
#5 Spin Doctor Tired running longer last time and can be effective in this turn-back in distance.
Race Summary Tapaway has the speed to stay in range and can improve off her last one.
        Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#11 Estrella de Dane Closed well for second at a mile last time and turns back in distance; can make a solid move off the pace in this one as well.
#8 Master Legionaire Finished full of run and wound up third in his last five races; long overdue for the win but can certainly be a player in the gimmicks.
#12 Iron Men of Metz Has the speed to clear the field and figures to be the one to run down; stayed two races back and will have to hold it together late.
Race Summary Estrella de Dane will get a good pace in front of him and will likely be rolling at the end of it.

            Stanford vs Oregon State
            Oregon State +6.5 (-110) (BetOnline)

Both of these teams come in with raised expectations as look to continue with their PAC-12 schedules. Beavers come in red hot winners of 3 straight games and trying to make a move here in the Pac-12 I realize the Beavers wins have come from less then stellar competition but this is just to many points to give the home team here. These teams last met in March of last year a 68-65 win for the Beavers. Oregon State adds this to their resume today at the Gill Coliseum. Beavers are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 Monday games. Investment of 9 units on Oregon State plus the points rotation #864

              Liverpool vs Southampton
              Liverpool -152 (BookMaker)

Liverpool is in a battle for the top spot and can't afford to slip up here. Southampton is a respectable squad but not in the same class as the Reds. Off b2b draws, Liverpool will be in an angry mood and will settle for nothing less than victory. Southampton represents the perfect opponent as the Reds have beaten the Saints in six straight matches, winning by a combined score of 17-2. While Liverpool still isn't at full strength, it has been getting healthier. Milner, Alcantara and Shaqiri all returned to action last match and no new injuries were reported. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp had this to say: "... Shaq is back and that’s, by the way, the best news – the boys are back and, as far as I know in the moment, nobody got injured, which is a very important thing." Consider Liverpool

                Liverpool -1 (-108) (BetOnline)

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach Monday EPL Free Pick goal line (-1 +100) @ Southampton @ 3 ET - Coming off a goal-less draw in their most recent game Liverpool should be ready to respond in a big way here. Of course that is why the money line on this game is quite pricey but I will take a shot with the goal line at -1 instead so we don't even have to lay any juice. Of course that does mean that Liverpool needs to win this by 2 or more to turn a 1-goal win (push) into a winning ticket for us here but that is actually quite likely in my opinion. Liverpool has the top goal differential in the league with a +17 through 16 games and this is one of those matches where they should be on top of their game considering the disappointing result in their most recent game. Free Pick LIVERPOOL -1 goal +100

                  Winthrop vs Charleston Sou
                  Charleston Sou +14.5 (-115) (BookMaker)

My math model only favors Winthrop by 12.0 points in this game and it's difficult imagining the undefeated Eagles being motivated to play the 1-5 Buccaneers. Indeed, Winthrop is a money-burning 3-7 ATS in its last ten games versus teams with a losing record. Charleston Southern is a veteran team anchored by senior guard Phlandrous Fleming, Jr., who leads the team in both scoring (18.3 ppg) and rebounds (7.7). Fleming is one of the best players in the Big South Conference and was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2019-20. Charleston Southern is undervalued by the betting market due to the fact that the Buccaneers lost five of their last six games last season. However, those losses were due, in large part, to injuries that derailed the final quarter of the Buccaneers' season. Head coach Barclay Radebaugh returns four starters and one of the best freshmen in the conference in Melvin Edwards, Jr. Edwards originally committed to UNC-Wilmington before landing in Charleston and is averaging 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. The point spread is grossly inflated in this game so grab the points with Charleston Southern as Oskeim Sports' Free College Basketball Pick for Monday, January 4.

                    Boston Celtics vs Toronto Raptors
                    Toronto Raptors -3 (-110) (BetOnline)

The set-up: I think this is a fantastic situational play on the Raptors. We're only two weeks into the season, so overreaction to a team doing extremely well, or very poorly, in the early going could prove costly. The Raptors are not going to the be the powerhouse in the East they've been for so long, that much is clear, but I don't think that their current 1-4 record properly portrays where this team will finish at the end of the season. The Raptors have plenty of talent and experience still obviously. The pick: Boston is probably going to finish with a better record than Toronto once it's all said and done, but it comes in off a tight 122-120 victory in Detroit just last night and I think it'll struggle with energy in the second game of the back-to-back scenario. Consider laying the points on the desperate Raptors on Monday. This is a 1* FREE PLAY on the Raptors.

Monday free play is the Hornets and Sixers to hold Under the total as they play once again in Philadelphia after a 127-112 Over on Saturday night in the City of Brotherly Love.

Charlotte saw a stretch of 4 straight games landing Under the total snapped as they gave up their most points through 6 games played this season. I would expect head coach James Borrego stresses the importance of guarding the perimeter tonight as Philly made an alarming 16 three-point shots on Saturday night.

Philadelphia is off to a 5-1 start to their young season and that Over on Saturday night was their first Over of the year. In all, Philly is on a 7-1 Under run that dates back to bubble playoff action.

After a big night of offense on Saturday, things get tightened up a little tonight on defense as the Hornets and the Sixers stay Under the total.

Monday night in the NBA lay the home chalk with the Orlando Magic as they play host to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Both teams are off to 4-2 starts, but tonight the schedule is in favor of the Orlando Magic as they will conclude their 4 game homestand with back-to-back games against Cleveland tonight and Wednesday. This homestand has seen them lose badly to both Oklahoma City and Philadelphia their last 2 times on court, but things will go better tonight for the Magic.

Cleveland is playing their third in a row on the road and they are off a solid win on Saturday at the Atlanta Hawks. It was a game the Cavs battled from 15 points down in the second half for the victory. I get the feeling the Cavs are going to fall to defeat tonight as I do not see Orlando losing a third in a row on their home floor tonight.

This has been a good matchup for the Magic who won and covered all 3 series meetings between the teams last year and are on a 6-1 straight up run the last 7 times these teams have faced one another.

No issue laying the home wood tonight for the first of two.

                          Date/Time: January 4, 2021 7PM EST
                          Play: Boston Celtics +3.0 (-110)
The injury-riddled Celtics are in Florida to square off against the Florida Raptors rather than the Toronto Raptors. The Raps are calling Florida their home until Canada loosens their COVID restriction for individuals, teams in this situation when they cross the northern border. This is the first meeting between these two Eastern Conference franchises since the best-of-seven in the bubble when Boston defeated Toronto in Game 7.
The Raptors can talk all they want about revenge and such, but the truth is that this 2020-21 Toronto teams isn't as capable as last season's bubble version. The Raptors are offensively handcuffed and will be as long as they depend as heavily as they currently are on Van Fleet.
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combine to do enough by themselves put Toronto down... again.

Event: (869) Maryland at (870) Indiana
                            Sport/League: CBB

                            Play: Indiana -6.0 (-110)
Indiana has improved their stature in the league and publically during the tenure of head coach Archie Miller. The climb to being considered one of the college elite for the Hoosiers is the biggest step for the coach, his staff, and the program. The Hoosiers have not had much success against Maryland the last two seasons losing all three games.
Miller spoke to the media in the double-overtime loss to Penn State, “ We’re going to have to get some guys playing at a higher level with some desperation.” Last January after a loss to the Nittnay Lions Miller talked about how his kids lost. “When you look at the turnovers in the second half, I believe it was 12, and you look at 3 for 26 from our backcourt from the floor and 1 for 8 from three, you’re going to have a hard time.”
The losses that the Hoosiers have suffered to Penn State the last two campaigns have been related to the youth of the roster and self-inflicted wounds. This year it is the Terps that will play younger and with less depth due to the injury to forward Darryl Morsey. “Everything changed [vs. Michigan] when Darryl got hurt,” Maryland coach Turgeon told the media this week. “We were a thin team before. We became even thinner. Donta [Scott] had to play the whole game. He was exhausted and he was terrific. So there’s a lot of things that need to be navigated between now and Monday [against Indiana].”
