For Thursday go with Maryland as the home dog against conference-rival Iowa.

Iowa is back on track after an overtime loss back on Christmas Day at Minnesota, as the Hawkeyes have won back-to-back conference tilts including a tight 2-point win at Rutgers 5 days ago.

Maryland has been backed into a corner with conference losses in 3 of their last 4 and it doesn't help that senior Darryl Morsell sat out the Terps latest loss at Indiana earlier this week.

The good news is Morsell is expected to be back tonight and I do like the idea of getting a few baskets at home with the crafty Mark Turgeon concocting a way to slow down Luka Garza and his mates tonight.

These conference rivals split the pair of meetings last season before COVID-19 shut the sport down for good in March and it is Maryland that has won 5 of the past 7 series meetings overall.

The Terps defense is allowing just 66.6 points per game, while the Hawkeyes come in allowing 74 points per game this year. That being the case, would much rather be on the defensive home dog in dire need of a win to keep things close all the way.

Iowa is likely too good to lose outright, but I can see another close road game being played for the Hawkeyes.

Take the points and the Terrapins.

    3* MARYLAND

Thursday late night in the Pacific 12, going to look for the Bruins and the Sun Devils to tie one on that sees plenty of points by the time these 40 minutes are over and done with.

The Uclans are posting over 75 points per game and have landed Over the total in 2 of their last 3 and in 4 of their last 6 overall.

The Sun Devils come in averaging over 77 points per game, but have played their last pair of games and 3 of their last 4 overall Under the total.

My feeling is that Under trend gets stopped tonight as 3 straight and 6 of the past 9 in this rivalry have landed Over the total.

These teams usually get the offense cranking when they get together, so going to look for that series Over trend to continue in this spot in Tempe tonight.

      UCLA-Arizona State Over.

Thursday's free play will be on Philadelphia and Brooklyn to slip Over the posted total.

In an early sample size to the season the 76ers have played 6 of their first 8 games Under the posted total, while the Nets have played 5 of their first 8 games also Under the total.

If we take a closer look we find that Philly just played a rather high-scoring game just last night in their 141-136 win at home over Washington to make it 2 of the last 3 played by the Sixers landing in the Over column.

As for Brooklyn, they too have been trending towards the Over as they just scored 130 points in their first game without Kevin Durant who is out for close contact for a few more games. Their Over against the Jazz earlier this week was the 3rd Over in the last 4 games for the Nets.

With all 3 meetings a season ago between the teams landing in the Over column, I will take my chances with a defensively-tired (on the court last night) Philly team to combine with Brooklyn on another Over here on Thursday,

I favor MATSON here. Earnings per start in turf route races is solid for this equine. With a reliable 80 average speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. Vigil has a winning percentage of 19 over the last month. MUSKET POWDER - Could best this field here, showing respectable figures of late.

Exceedingly tough looking spot for UNLV. The Rebels have not played a game in over a month and now have to try and survive 40 minutes in altitude against a gritty Colorado State team. The Rams are off the split at San Diego State that included a phenomenal comeback to win the first matchup. This team simply doesn't let up and while I don't think they're all that much better than UNLV on paper, the situation is really favorable. My belief is that the Rams are going to sweep this two-game series at Fort Collins and while the line here is pretty high, I think this is a double digit win spot for Colorado State against a rusty UNLV team. Laying the points.

The Cavaliers continue to give a game effort even though about half the team is out because of injuries. Without both Garland and Sexton in the backcourt the pace really slows down. Throw in the fact that Sexton got hurt in the last game, and we could see the only legit scorer being less than full go.
Morant being out has devastated this Memphis offense. The only way for this team to compete is on the defensive end of the court. The line has been bet down for good reason, but it's still too high.

My college hoops totals system is a combination of relevant statistical data from KenPom.com, history involving similar games (researched through the SDQL database), and current market data. A play is made when enough of these factors align. The size of the play is determined by a combination of how many of these factors align, how much value is perceived, and how confident I am about the play.

Although the Wildcats have lost consecutive games after a strong start, they’re still dangerous and will be treated as such by the visiting Illini. Head coach Brad Underwood has warned his team that going into Welsh-Ryan Arena will be a chore and he’s probably right. Northwestern beat Michigan State soundly there and edged Ohio State in its house too. It has a solid big man in Pete Nance and a couple of strong scorers in Pete Nance and Boo Buie. Losing at Iowa and Michigan is obviously nothing to feel sorry about. Northwestern should hand Illinois a game here. Even though both Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn led Illinois to a pair of victories against their in-state rivals last year, neither contest was a blowout. A seven-point spread sounds about right so a better play might be on the high side here since I think both teams will be capable of scoring effectively and the Illini isn’t going to come in and be slowed by Indiana and Purdue, both of whom play through the post and can turn games into a grind. Play on over 148.5

Arizona State hasn’t played a game in three weeks and they’ve had just a handful of practices during that span. They rank #324 out of 338 Division 1 teams in rebounding – UTEP outrebounded them by a 2:1 margin the last time they took the floor. And the Sun Devils are heavily reliant on their perimeter shooting; bad news against a Mick Cronin coached Bruins team that has proven their defensive chops.
ASU head coach Bobby Hurley certainly didn’t give us a ‘bet-on’ quote here, talking about practicing leading up to tonight’s game – he’s making excuses already: “I was focused more on conditioning. I could tell on Monday and Tuesday that the guys were pretty winded….Losing that time is just opportunity to be cohesive, not having the normal reps under your belt you’d normally have.”
The Bruins only have two losses this season. A strong San Diego State team knocked them off on opening night. And Ohio State knocked them off in Cleveland in a game where the Bruins offense went cold over the last five minutes. Im not expecting a repeat performance here against an Arizona State team that has done nothing but cost their backers $$ this season, overvalued from Day 1. Take UCLA

The Key: The Colorado Buffaloes are back home after a 1-2 road trip that saw them lose to Arizona and UCLA and beat USC. The Oregon Ducks are on the road after a 4-game home stand against some pretty weak competition. Their only true road game all season was a shaky 74-71 win at Washington as an 8.5-point favorite. Washington may be the worst team in the Pac-12. The Ducks are just 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games. Betting the Buffaloes at home has been a huge money maker over the years. The Buffaloes are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games. The home team is 14-3 ATS in the last 17 matchups. The favorite is 10-1 ATS in the last 11 matchups. Take Colorado.
