Friday NHL Free play. My selection is on Tampa Bay -1.5 goals over Detroit at 7:05 pm et on Friday.
It's becoming more and more clear that the Red Wings are the worst team in the NHL (less than honorable mention goes to Ottawa) and I don't see them picking themselves up off the mat for Friday night's tilt in Tampa. The Lightning are off to a roaring start this season and after easily brushing the Wings aside by a 5-1 score two nights ago there's little reason to expect any sort of reversal here. Detroit simply doesn't have the depth to compete with most of today's NHL teams - certainly not the Lightning, who rank near the top in most offensive categories. Take Tampa Bay -1.5 goals (10*).

Surprised by the low total here as the defensive presence of the Cavaliers is a long way in the rear view mirror. This was a team that started the year as a top ranked defensive unit, but has since resulted in the same poor defense from the past few seasons. Over the last two weeks the Cavaliers rank 24th in the league defensively, and now take on the best offense in the league in that time frame. It also hurts that its best defensive disruptor will not be playing tonight as Larry Nance jr sits out once again with a wrist injury.

We will take a shot here with the Hornets as a 7.5-point home dog against the Jazz. It's not easy betting against a team like Utah, who just keeps winning and covering, but this feels like the perfect spot to fade the Jazz. Utah will be playing on no rest after last night's 112-91 win at Atlanta. That's now 13 wins in their last 14 games.
It's impossible for the Jazz to keep winning at this rate and if there's a time they are going to come out flat, it's the second of a back-to-back on the road against a team they should beat. It's also important to note that Charlotte has been a great bet here of late, covering the number in 10 of their last 15 games.
Road favorites off a road win by 10 or more and are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights like Utah is here are just 20-45 (31%) ATS over the last 5 seasons. Hornets are 20-7-2 ATS last 29 games as a dog, 9-2-1 ATS last 12 as a home dog and 7-1 ATS last 8 at home vs a team with a winning road record. Give me Charlotte +7.5!

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been a lot more competitive of late and should handle the depleted Oklahoma City Thunder tonight. The Timberwolves are 1-2 SU but 3-0 ATS in their last three games overall with their two losses coming by a combined 5 points.
Now they hit the road to take on a Thunder team that will be without three of their best players in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (21.8 PPG, 6.3 APG), George Hill (11.8 PPG, 3.1 APG) and Luguentz Dort (11.8 PPG). It's also a Thunder team that is just 2-7 SU at home this season.
I think the Thunder are getting more respect than they deserve tonight because they are coming off a shocking 104-87 upset win over the Rockets as 6.5-point dogs despite not having Gilgeous-Alexander or Hill. The Rockets took them lightly after crushing them by 30 points the game before, thinking they just had to show up to win.
The Timberwolves won't be taking them lightly and will be motivated off two straight one-possession losses. Minnesota is 5-0 ATS in its last five games vs. a team with a losing record. The Timberwolves are 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings, including 4-1 ATS in their last five trips to Oklahoma City. Bet the Timberwolves Friday.

The set-up: Boston comes to town injured. It's off a 116-110 loss to the Kings. The projected starting line-up of Jason Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Kemba Walker and Daniel Theis have played all of two games together. Walker isn't even back into "game shape" at this point after returning from a lengthy injury. LA's won four of its last five.
The pick: The Clippers have looked dangerous when healthy this year and I think their defense is underrated. LA just held Cleveland to 99 points in a 121-99 road win. The Clippers have interestingly seen the total dip under the number in ten of their last 16 after a SU road victory in which they held their opponent to 100 points or fewer in. This one sets up as more of a lower-scoring game in my opinion.

They are playing back-to-back nights though, which is always tough. The Charlotte Hornets are 10-12 S/U and 12-10 ATS on the season. The Hornets have won three of tehir last four games both S/U and ATS. The Hornets had last night off after losing to Philly on Wednesday night, 111-118.
