A total of 9 may seem short in a Yankees-Blue Jays get together. But it isn't. At least so far this season. The two teams have each played 10 games for a combined 20 games. There were fewer than 10 runs scored in 16 of those 20 games. Yankee starter Jameson Taillon is on the comeback trail after missing last season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He got the rust off in his first start giving up two runs in 4 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts against the Orioles six days ago. Toronto is starting its ace, Hyun Jin Ryu, who has given up two or fewer earned runs in 11 of his last 13 starts. Both bullpens rank among the top-five in ERA. The Yankees are averaging 2.7 runs in their last four games if you discount an 8-4 win against the Rays. The Blue Jays are averaging 2.4 runs during their past five games not counting a 15-1 blasting of the Angels.

With the Rangers favored on the moneyline, we're able to get an extra +1.5 goals (puckline) with the Devils for a relatively fair price. Considering that the Rangers are off an OT win and that three of their past six games have been tied after regulation, those extra +1.5 goals could well come in handy. The Devils are a respectable 6-6 (+3.3 vs. the moneyline) when off a loss by two or more goals. They know that they'll face these same Rangers, at MSG, on Thursday and Saturday. In other words, they better take care of business on home ice tonight. Look for them to bounce back and give their guests all they can handle in this one. Consider NJ on the puckline.

The set-up: I think the Capitals are worth the price of admission here vs. this porous Flyers' defense. Philly can score, but its defense and goaltending is atrocious, allowing 3.7 GPG (the offense only averages 2.9.)
The pick: The Capitals are flying right now, fresh off an 8-1 beatdown of the Bruins. Washington averages 3.4 GPG, and its defense concedes just 2.9. Philly is just 3-9 in its last 12 vs. clubs with winning records, while Washington is 4-1 in its last five in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation.

Tuesday MLB Free play. My selection is on Atlanta over Miami at 7:20 pm et on Tuesday.
The Braves couldn't hold a late lead last night, ultimately falling 5-3 in extra innings in their second consecutive heart-breaking loss against an N.L. East opponent. I do expect them to bounce back on Tuesday, however, as they send Max Fried to the hill against Pablo Lopez. Fried will be looking to put a tough start to the season behind him. Here in April it's important not to overreact to early results as we're talking about very small sample sizes. Fried has posted an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP of 2.43 through two starts but should bounce back against a Marlins club he owns a career 6-1 team record against. Note that Fried owns an impressive 53.1% career ground ball percentage not to mention a 15.9% fly ball percentage - seven full percentage points below the MLB average. Keep in mind, Fried finished fifth in N.L. Cy Young Award voting and 18th in N.L. MVP voting, along with earning his first career Gold Glove. The Braves are 13-1 in Fried's last 14 starts as a favorite, outscoring opponents by an average margin of 3.7 runs in those contests. Pablo Lopez has shown some improvement each season with the Marlins but owns a career 2-7 team record in starts against the Braves. Note that he has made it through six innings in just three of nine career outings against Atlanta. Take Atlanta (8*).

I will gladly take my chances with the UNDER 7.5 in Tuesday's NL Central clash between the Brewers and Cubs. We have two aces on the mound in this one and both has already dominated the opposing side in a start this year.
Kyle Hendricks will toe the rubber for Chicago. After a sub-par outing his first start against the Pirates, Hendricks tossed 6 shutout innings at home against these Brewers. Not a surprise, as Hendricks owns a 2.72 ERA and 1.040 WHIP in 24 career starts against Milwaukee. In his last 4 starts he's given up just 2 runs over 27 2/3 innings.
Brandon Woodruff will go for the Brewers and he too bounced back from a shaky first start by throwing 7 shutout innings with 8 K's against the Cubs. In Woodruff's last two starts against Chicago he's not allowed a single run, given up just 2 hits and has a 20/0 K/BB ratio. He's also facing a Cubs offense that couldn't be swinging the bat much worse in the early going. Give me the UNDER 7.5!

This is just too good a price to pass up with the Raptors at home with the injury problems that the Hawks are dealing with. Everyone is focused on the status of Trae Young, who is questionable, but we know Atlanta will be without Danilo Gallinari, Tony Snell, De'Andre Hunter, John Collins, Cam Reddish and Kris Dunn. Raptors won't have VanVleet, but overall Toronto has the deeper roster available to them and I wouldn't be surprised if they won here going away. Bet the Raptors -1.5!
