    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Penn National - Race #5
#4 Blueberry Mash He didn't miss by much with similar last time out, and he should be able to find a really good pressing spot behind some speed drawn inside of him.
#7 Northern Thunder He has a little bit of versatility in running style, but he'll be coming from somewhere off the pace. Recent form fits well, but the price may get a bit shorter than it should.
#6 Grit and Glory He's protected locally as he races first off the claim after a late fading effort at Aqueduct. He's not far removed from races that would handle these, but I'd want something close to the 4/1 ML offering to think about it.
Race Summary Blueberry Mash can settled just off the sharper speed, and he may be able to turn that into a first-jump trip that gets him home ahead of threats like Northern Thunder.
    Penn National - Race #6
#5 Donaldson He steps back up after turning in an improved effort at the $25,000 level, and he may offer a playable price while trying this tougher group. Forward threat.
#1 Live Fire He was a little disappointing last time out after that good run in a fast race two starts back. His baseline effort seems good enough to win this, and you may get his capable teammate, too.
#9 E T's Deuces Wild The main concern is that he tends to give away ground late in his races, but he draws well to have a go of it while facing no pressure from his outside.
Race Summary Donaldson figures to offer a playable number on the step back up with maidens, and I'll try to get him into the exacta with Live Fire.
    Penn National - Race #10
#4 Commissioner Biggs He has some tactical pace and can find a good pressing spot on the hike, and he may offer a playable number while stepping into allowance company for the new team.
#1A Naughty Prince His teammate isn't out of the question with these, but this guy is certainly the stronger half of the pair. He ran a good one in the mud last out, and his form starts to look even better when you isolate the one-turn races.
#5 Four of Swords He's another stepping up for this one, but he has some sharp pace on occasion, and he may be able to get brave if he finds the front.
Race Summary Commissioner Biggs has the right running style for this group, as his tactical pace should keep him in touch early, but he also owns a finishing ability that few in here have.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #2
#5 ORANGE ZEST Tired in faster division of split race at this level.
#3 ORIGINAL SMOKEY Blew clear stretch leads in last pair, moves outside in.
#2 THE TIES THAT BIND Gets major driver upgrade for second start.
Race Summary Orange Zest chased the favorite and tired before the deep closers swept the top three spots. The raced timed 2-2/5 seconds faster than the race that morning-line favorite Original Smokey ran in. Play a 5-ALL exacta.
      Northfield Park - Race #3
#1 REIGN OF THRONES Sustained rally but was repelled by the winning favorite.
#2 SOUTHERN SWAGGER Wide into first turn, no breathers while advancing, ran third.
#4 SOME HEART THROB Lost contact with odds-on winner, held third, price attached.
Race Summary Reign of Thrones, out and moving before the half, tipped 3-wide at the 3/4-mile mark, poked a head in front of the 9-to-5 favorite on the turn and settled for second best. He should pick up his first win of the year with a duplicate effort. Play a 1 with 2,4 with ALL trifecta.
      Northfield Park - Race #5
#1 HOOSIER SHOOTER Awaited room at key juncture, some late foot as the fave.
#4 THIS TIME Looks best on big class drop, but he's 1-41 since 2020.
#5 MIGHTY BREEZE Took money, had pace battle to rally into, finished evenly.
Race Summary Hoosier Shooter missed a week sick but his prior effort as the beaten favorite fits okay with this group. He saved ground in fourth, picked up live cover on the backside, was trapped between rivals on the turn and finished with good energy. Play 1-4 and 1-5 exactas

        Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #1
#6 High Class Euro Ran evenly at a higher level in his first here, takes a class drop and get a good pace in front of her; can make a strong late run.
#2 Apple County Improved position and lost ground late and settled for second last out; won his last of 2020 at Remington and ran well in his return.
#3 Wirewirewire Got a perfect trip and drew clear late vs. similar; on the board in his last two and fits well.
Race Summary High Class Euro will chase a field full of speed and can finish well at this level.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #6
#2 Acting Scrappy Stumbled and lost his rider in his last one of 2020 at Remington; has plenty of decent works for his return and rates an edge in his comeback.
#3 Froggy Made a decent run from behind for third last out and gets a longer distance; big player today.
#6 Internet Express Comes off an easy win in a maiden claiming event last out and can press from the outset.
Race Summary Acting Scrappy didn't finish his last one last year when he stumbled and was pulled up; workouts indicate he's return to run a big one in his return.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #8
#3 Northern Dynasty Just missed last time in a much-improved effort and gets a return engagement with jockey Kimes, who is hitting at 25 percent. Trainer Caster hovering in the low 20s and this one is sitting on a win.
#2 Juliard Honor Won her last two after losing a photo in her first of the year; loves the track (as does trainer Young, 30 percent) and will be in the mix from the start.
#8 Nora's Legacy Makes her first since just and has won 1 of 4; trainer Bravo having a good season and gets Wethey aboard.
Race Summary Northern Dynasty lost a photo last out and can get to the winner's circle with a similar effort; should have enough for a big finish.

Race 1 - Maiden Claiming - 8.3f on the Dirt. Purse: $30000 Class Rating: 77

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 121 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $40,000.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 1 SUPER HOUDINI 9/5
                      # 2 S MAN 3/1
                      # 4 PYLON 9/2
My selection in this race is SUPER HOUDINI. Could provide positive dividends based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 71. Had one of the best speed figures of this field in his last contest. He has formidable class ratings, averaging 81, and has to be given consideration in this contest. S MAN - He has been running soundly and the speed figures are among the best in this group of horses. With a solid 69 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. PYLON - Should compete well in the pace battle which bodes well with this group. Could best this group based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 69 - of his last outing.

                        Will Rogers Downs - Race #1 - Post: 1:00pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,540 Class Rating: 73

                        Rating:

                        #5 HIGH CLASS EURO (ML=3/1)

HIGH CLASS EURO - This rider and trainer's horses have been producing a beneficial ROI. Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone speed freak facing sluggish sorts today. Ran last time around the track against a much better field at Will Rogers Downs. The move down in class should suit her well.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #2 APPLE COUNTY (ML=9/5), #3 WIREWIREWIRE (ML=5/2), #1 EURO STEP (ML=7/2),

APPLE COUNTY - No pace in this race to help this closer's hopes. When checking today's Equibase class figure, she will have to earn a much better speed figure than in the last race to vie in this dirt route. WIREWIREWIRE - This mare earned a speed rating in her last race which likely isn't good enough in today's event. EURO STEP - Didn't do much last time. Probably won't make a winning move in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 HIGH CLASS EURO is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better
                        EXACTA WAGERS: Skip

                          RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                          # 6 RHYTHM AND POETRY 1/1
                          # 3 SMOOTHOUTTHETRACK 7/1
                          # 4 SWANEE BEACH 2/1
RHYTHM AND POETRY gets the edge as the bet in here. Has been racing well in races of this distance, going 1 for 4 under similar conditions. Has formidable front speed and will almost certainly fare soundly versus this group. The Equibase Speed Fig of 53 from her latest contest looks very good in here. SMOOTHOUTTHETRACK - Should go off at a decent number and has some positives going for her. SWANEE BEACH - Grudzien and Saenz have won 24 percent of their races giving this horse a strong chance. Risk takers using horses with this jockey and handler combo have done quite well lately.

                            Thistledown - Race #6 - Post: 3:20pm - Allowance - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,500 Class Rating: 91

                            Rating:

                            #6 ADHHAR (ML=5/2)

ADHHAR - This gelding is back in a race very quick. This is a great angle - Sprint horses that come back in less than 10 days after a race. A good sign of a sharp and ready racehorse. The last time he tried this distance he got a fig good enough to win this contest. A big drop down in class rating points from his Apr 27th race at Thistledown. Based on that data, I will give this horse the advantage. The 87 last race speed figure looks sound on paper.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 TIME TO SHOOT (ML=3/1), #4 TIME HEIST (ML=7/2), #1 CAT HEAT (ML=6/1),

TIME TO SHOOT - In any race of 5 1/2 furlongs, I like to support a contender that has been looking good in sprint contests recently. TIME HEIST - Can't really be sure that the last speed fig of 84 is true since it was obtained on an off track. Doubtful that the speed rating he notched on Apr 16th will hold up in this race. CAT HEAT - Don't feel this mount will do much running in today's event. That last rating was mediocre when compared with today's class rating.
