Wednesday's Free NBA Pick is on the Philadelphia 76ers as a 8-point home favorite against the Washington Wizards in Game 2. I think the betting public has caught on to this Wizards team and their great finish. They also see that the Wizards only lost by 7 in a Game 1, making this an enticing number to back them.
To me it feels like a bit of a trap. I think the closer than expected result in Game 1 was Philly being a little off their game after a week off. Washington just looked like they wanted it more. When you got the motivational edge and still lose, that's a troubling sign. 76ers also won with a mere 6 points from Ben Simmons. Yes he had 15 rebounds and 15 assists, but he's going to score more. Philly also shot just 10 of 32 (31.3%) from deep. They shot 38.8% from behind the 3-point line at home this season. Bet the 76ers -8!

My free play is on the Bos Red Sox at 7:10 ET. The Atlanta Braves have won the NL East in each of the last three seasons but Atlanta has struggled early in 2021. However, after opening a brief two-game IL series with a 3-1 win over the Red Sox in Fenway last night, the Braves have won four straight to even their record at 24-24. The good news for Atlanta fans is that the first-place Mets are the ONLY team in the division with a winning record (22-20), so the Braves enter tonight's game just ONE game back of New York. Boston opened the season 0-3 but a NINE-game winning streak followed. That run has kept Boston atop the AL East for most of the season but an 11-game winning streak by the Rays allowed Tampa Bay to catch Boston. Boston's loss didn't hurt as bad as it could have, as the Rays saw their 11-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday, as well. Boston enters tonight's game a half-game back of Tampa Bay in the division but also is just a half-game ahead of the Yankees, who also lost last night. Drew Smyly (2-2, 5.11 ERA) will take the mound for Atlanta on Wednesday with Boston countering with Nick Pivetta (5-0, 3.59 ERA). Smyly's playing for his sixth team in this, his eighth season. Smyly's career record pretty much tells the story. In 195 career appearances (118 starts), he's 37-37 with a 4.18 ERA. Can you say "journeyman?" Pivetta began his career with Philadelphia in 2017 and in his first three seasons, was 19-30 with a 5.34 ERA. Pivetta made just three appearances with Philadelphia during the start-delayed 2020 season (all in relief), pitching just 5.2 innings while allowing 10 ERs (15.88 ERA). He was traded to the Boston Red Sox on August 21 and made two starts for Boston, going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA to end last season. Pivetta earned a place in the rotation during spring training and has delivered "big time," going 5-0 with 3.59 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, while holding opponents to just a .205 BAA over nine starts (Boston is 8-1). Bothe starters have solid records against tonight's opponents, as Smyly has nine career starts vs Boston, going 2-1 (teams are 5-4) with a 2.56 ERA, while Pivetta has made 12 starts vs Atlanta, going 5-2 (teams are 8-4) with a 3.74 ERA. That said, Pivetta is the MUCH better pitcher this season and since coming to Boston at the end of 2020, he is 7-0 with a 3.28 ERA in 11 starts with Boston (Red Sox are 10-1). That's good enough for me to back Boston off last night's loss. Good luck...Larry

FRANK’S CUTTING ROOM FLOOR FOR WEDNESDAY, 5/26:

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for the Wednesday card is with the Atlanta Hawks plus the points versus the New York Knicks. Atlanta (42-31) has won five games in a row after taking Game One of this series by a 107-105 score. The Hawks have covered the point spread in 4 of their last 5 games after a straight-up win. They have also covered the point spread in 10 of their last 15 road games as an underdog of up to six points. Atlanta was a small road favorite in Game One closing in the two to three point range (so Hawks bettors could have lost) — but I am not sure if the Knicks established as a 2-point favorite tonight makes sense. As more and more bettors jump on the Zig-Zag theory of the NBA playoffs (2012 called, they want their gimmick betting tactics back), the value may have finally gone full circle to be contrarian against the zig-zaggers. New York (41-32) has still failed to cover the point spread in 14 of their last 20 playoff games when favored. Take Atlanta plus the points. Best of luck — Frank.
