My free play is on the StL Cards at 8:15 ET. FOUR of the NL Central's five teams made last season's expanded playoff field. The Red ended a six-postseason drought with a 31-29 record but were quickly dispatched in the wild card round by the Braves 2-0, as Cincy almost inconceivably went scoreless over 22 innings (lost 1-0 in 13 innings and 5-0 in nine innings). As for the Cardinals, they were kept off the field from July 30 through August 14 last season but the Cards somehow managed to earn a wild card spot with a 30-28 record. It was the team's SEVENTH postseason appearance over the previous 10 years (Cards lost 2-1 to the Padres in last year's wild card round). The two teams open a four-game series in St Louis on Thursday night with the Reds at 24-29 on the season (seven games back of the first-place Cubs) and the Cards at 31-25 (1 1/2-games back of the Cubs). The Reds got clobbered 17-3 at home on Tuesday by Philadelphia but probably caught a break when their game against the Phillies was rained out on Wednesday. The Cards know all about getting blown out, as they capped a 10-game road trip by getting pounded 14-3 in LA vs the Dodgers last night (StL finished the trip 5-5). Tonight's starters are Vladimir Gutierrez of Cincinnati (a 25-year-old rookie) and Adam Wainwright of St Louis (a 39-year-old vet). Wainwright began his career as a reliever but has had a memorable career as a starter with the Cards. From 2009-14 (missed the 2011 season with an injury) he finished in the top-three of Cy Young voting FOUR times, with two 19-win seasons and two 20-win seasons. The Cardinals have won four of six games from the Reds so far this season but will get their first look Gutierrez, who made his MLB debut May 28 in a 1-0 loss to the Cubs (5 IP / 2 hits / 1 ER). Gutierrez was 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA in three starts for Triple-A Louisville this season before his promotion. In contrast. Wainwright has made 30 career starts against the Reds, going 10-14 with a 5.45 ERA (team is 15-15). That's NOT a good history plus the Cards are just 4-6 in Wainwright's 10 starts here in 2021. However, look at Wainwright's home and away dichotomy. He owns a bloated 8.20 ERA in four road starts (opponents are batting .313 against hime0 but in his six starts at Busch Stadium, he owns a 2.41 ERA and a .196 BAA. That's SOME difference! The Padres were swept by the Cubs, and are heading home to the friendly confines of Petco Park. It is up to Yu Darvish to staunch the bleeding. Darvish is coming off his worst start of the year, allowing 4 runs in five innings and giving up an uncharacteristic 3 walks. For the season, he has been terrific; 5-1 with an era of 2.16.
Facing Darvish is Taijuan Walker. After missing a start with side tightness, he returned to pitch as well as he has all season. He has an era of 2.45 so far this year, and opposing batters have averaged sub.200 in his last 5 games.
The Mets’ bullpen has been strong over the last 8 games, with an era of 2.45. The Mets have been poor on the road this season. Their bats came to life in their last series against the Diamondbacks, but against Darvish and the strong Padres bullpen, they will not fare as well.
The Padres do many things well but with the exception of Tatis, raw power is not one of them. On that note, Tatis has missed a start and is listed as ‘day to day’.
The Wager: Two strong starters, two good bullpens, and the Mets’ ineptitude on the road make me believe this game will go Under.

Lost this prop play last game, but he went over in double overtime. If the game would have ended in regulation, the under would have hit for the 5th straight game in this series. As we've covered before, Portland is playing man to man defense and not doubling Jokic, so he has a great scoring matchup, and passing is not his number 1 priority. Without Murray, there is basically no pick and roll game so his passing opportunities are very limited there. Porter is more of a create his own shot player rather than a spot up shooter, as is Gordon. Jokic has had two games in this series with only 1 assist, two games with 5, and the double overtime game…we like this assist total to come in UNDER 6.5 assists.
