Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park will start the week with a 15-Race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

3-Jk Parlay (3/1)-Makes the 2nd start off the bench and was cashing checks versus $15k claimers in February before being put away. Doesn't have great gate speed but should find a good seat, maybe in the pocket behind #4.
4-Cougar Bait (2-1)-Wired the $6k claimers on 6-1 and went off at 6/5. Getting on the engine seems like a likelihood and Wrenn may look to follow the same script tonight.
6-Bourbans Best (9/2)-Finished behind #4 in last and had the same post. Merriman is back and is making the 3rd start for the Rhoades Barn. Took the long way around last week, if the fractions are honest and the trip is more efficient it could lead to the 5th picture in 21 tries this year.

Race 12

4-Clairmont (7-1)-Defeated the $7k claimers on 5-11 and then faced tougher in the last 3 starts. This is a better level for success. Lake could get aggressive from this post and be in striking range at a solid price.
5-In Commando (5/2)-Claimed last week by the Rhoades barn and goes from a 2nd tier starting spot to a prime post draw. This 12-year-old has 6 wins in 20 starts this year and drops in for the same $8k tag as last time. Merriman steers and he is familiar with this veteran who could be sitting on a big try.

Race 13

2-Doowrah Boy (3-1)-This colt has hit the board in 6 of 10 lifetime and has won 3 of 6 at NFLD. Had no chance in last after a soft half and has taken the long way around racing wide in the last 2 starts. Best chance for success from this post would be to leave and the get the top or settle in the pocket behind #5. Should be a player if Grismore can provide a good steer.
5-Express All That (4-1)-Leaves from a coveted post, Merriman steers and takes a meaningful drop but is only 1-15 lifetime. The overall record might be cause for pause but probably best to not overlook. Could be a better horse on the 1/2 mile track here than on the 5/8's at the Meadows. Has made 2 starts at NFLD notching a win and a 2nd place finish.

Race 14

4-Vague Traces (4-1)-Nine-year-old has only 3 wins in 31 races the last 2 years but drops to a spot to shine. Seems to do his best work racing near the top of the stack and has the gate speed to be forwardly placed. Should be in the hunt with an alert start.
5-Isowantapetrock (2-1)-Merriman steered last week and has the lines again. He was aggressive leaving from post 7 and did get the top but was parked past the quarter pole. That trip took its toll, faded down the lane to finish a close 3rd but could avenge that loss this time. The trip should be smoother with this post draw and will likely land on the point or in the 2 hole.

Parx Racing - Race #8

#10 Questeq	She'll have to fire fresh here, but she has run well off the bench in the past. She has some form that stacks up nicely enough with these at what should be a playable price.
#2 Lagom	She got pretty good pretty fast for the new connections, and she's almost surely capable of better with this kind after trying stakes company off the layoff.
#4 It's So Easy	She was no threat with similar on the main track, but her only turf try was fine behind a runaway winner, and she might be able to pass some of the tiring ones today.
Race Summary	Questeq is interesting enough, but she doesn't win often, so demand something close to the 8/1 ML price. Sharp drill ahead of this for a capable barn.

Parx Racing - Race #10

#11 Nomo Ron	There is an honest amount of pace signed on in here, so this wide draw will allow his rider to choosing a spying spot while tracking the pace. Reliable type can be tough here.
#6 Krsto Skye	This guy has run with some very tough groups over the last couple years, and there's a decent enough chance that the drop will be enough to get him home.
#2 Town Jak	He should be able to land a good kind of first-over trip with these, and he has always been competitive when facing similar company. I'd want him on the tickets.
Race Summary	Krsto Skye can be a handful here with anything like his best, but Nomo Ron might offer a bit better number on the board, and he can trip out from a good spot while watching everything unfold.

Parx Racing - Race #11

#1A Duquesne	Barn doesn't get a ton of chances to debut horses, so the stats don't worry me a whole lot from that small sample size. This guy is not meeting a whole lot in here outside of the other listed two and has the pedigree to be interesting on the lawn with Temple City on top of a City Zip mare.
#5 Ouch Ouch Ouch	He has put together a couple of improved races since adding blinkers, and something similar to his last might be good enough on the drop while facing locals for the first time.
#6 Bucks Are Moving	Thought the winner of his last made enough sense, and that was a pretty encouraging turf debut when getting back in with maiden claimers.
Race Summary	Duquesne is a small pedigree play in a race where horses like Ouch Ouch Ouch probably won't offer fair value, and something like the 8/1 ML price would seem fair.

#9 ONE OF THE FEW	Now-or-never type spot for new connections.
#7 OUTOFBAIT	Mare is lone winner in field this year, suspect Merriman will send.
#2 MIKES MAJESTIC	Stayed flat in qualifier, changes equipment for return.
Race Summary	One Of The Few is winless the last two years, but he enters a good trotting barn, plunges to the bottom level and should be able to overhaul this field despite a second-tier starting spot. Bet on him to win and place if near the 9-5 morning-line price.

Pocono Downs - Race #2

#2 MCNEIL Z TAM	Chased 5-2 winner two back, shuffled in third quarter in fast-paced follow-up.
#6 MYSWEETBOYMAX	Has speed, held on for minor awards in pair of sire stakes.
#7 CAPTIVATE HANOVER	Packs late kick, draws outside again.
Race Summary	McNeil Z Tam ran second under these conditions twice in May, then got shuffled out of contention while tracking the day's fastest pace last out. He gets Barlett to drive and is the pick in here. Play 2-6 and 2-7 exactas.

#5 A Few too Many	Was ultra impressive in a five-length win in his first since November; handled N2L foes with ease and will be tough again despite the step up in conditions.
#7 Will Knows	Has taken two of his last three and comes in off a score over claimers at Hawthorne in his first off the claim by Vanden Berg.
#6 Rampage	Held on for third vs. N3L rivals and could get a good run at the leaders in the final furlong.
Race Summary	A Few too Many overwhelmed easier than this last time; has come off the bench looking very talented.

Indiana Grand - Race #7

#3 Thirteen Stripes	Rallied for a go-away victory in her debut and can be tough on the return for Asmussen.
#6 Patty H	Won two of her last three at Gulfstream Park and does well on the front end; strong contender for Cox.
#2 Greatest Love	Won her first two and then ran an even fourth last time, all at Delta Downs; lands in a decent spot for her first local start.
Race Summary	Thirteen Stripes was sharp at first asking and it occurred over this strip; has the best chance for the upset over the odds-on Cox entrant.

Indiana Grand - Race #8

#7 U S Delta Force	Set the pace and just missed last out; comes back at the same conditions and looms as the one to catch.
#5 Pats Property	Lacked a closing move last out and drops to a claiming price here; fits in this spot.
#9 Lautrec	Just missed at Oaklawn and steps up in price; moves over to the turf and can be a factor.
Race Summary	U S Delta Force ran very well despite the loss last time and a similar effort gets him to the winner's circle this time around.
