My free play is on the NY Mets at 7:05 ET. The Baltimore Orioles opened the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Red Sox in Fenway but as of this morning, the Orioles are 21-38 and 15 1/2-games back of the Red Sox in the AL East, who trail the first-place Rays by a half-game. The Orioles recently ended a 14-game losing streak (June 1) and after an 18-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday, have suddenly won FOUR of five. However, can we really say the Orioles are 'surging,' as the only team in MLB with a worse overall mark is Arizona (20-41) and no team owns a worse home mark than Baltimore (10-20). In contrast, the Mets are somewhat surging with EIGHT wins in their last 11 games and at 29-23, own the LONE winning record in the NL East (New York is 3 1/2-games up on Atlanta, which has won THREE straight NL East titles). Tuesday tonight is the first of a brief two-game IL series between the two teams in Baltimore and the starting pitching matchup features a pair of lefties who each made their MLB debuts in 2020. David Peterson (1-4, 5.89 ERA) of the Mets opposes Bruce Zimmermann (3-3, 4.96 ERA) of Baltimore in tonight's opener. Peterson showed promise in 2020 making 10 appearances (nine starts) and went 6-2 with a 3.44 ERA and .202 BAA. However, in 10 starts in 2021, he's 1-4 (team is 4-6) with a 5.89 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a BAA that's jumped just about 50 points to .251. Zimmerman made just two appearances (a total of seven innings) in 2020 but has made 10 appearances in 2021 (nine starts), going 3-3 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. One of his wins came in his lone relief appearance and Baltimore's record in his nine starts sits at 2-7. I'll 'throw out' the starting pitchers here and back the Mets, who are playing .558 baseball as opposed to Baltimore's .356. New York would love to sweep this two-game road series, before returning to Citi Field for a seven-game homestand against the 37-25 Padres and 33-27 Cubs. As the saying goes, "One Day (Game) at a Time." The Mets are the pick for Tuesday. Good luck...Larry

Peterson has a 9.00 ERA and 1.818 WHIP in his last 3 starts. He's also got an ugly 7.30 ERA and 1.581 WHIP in 6 road starts. Bruce Zimmermann of the Orioles doesn't have great numbers either, but he's given up just 3 runs with 13 K's in his last 2 starts, which has spanned 10 1/3 innings. Give me the Orioles +111!

This total between the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros has been set too high with how good these two starting pitchers have been this season. Plus, the Astros are giving up just 2.7 runs per game in their last seven games, and the Red Sox have allowed 5 runs or less in 11 of their last 12 games.
Martin Perez has been the best starter for the Red Sox this season. He is 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA and 1.234 WHIP in 11 starts. Perez owns the Astros, going 8-4 with a 2.46 ERA in 13 career starts against them. He has fired 15 2/3 shutout innings in his last two starts against Houston.
Framber Valdez is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in his two starts this season while allowing just two earned runs with 14 K's in 11 innings. Valdez faced the Red Sox in his last start on June 2nd and held them to one earned run in 7 innings with 10 K's.

I'll take my chances with the Mariners as a slim +104 road dog against the Tigers in Tuesday's series opener. Seattle has some momentum after winning the series finale 9-5 at division rival Angels to salvage a 2-2 split in their 4-game series.
They also have the much hotter pitcher going. Marco Gonzales has an ugly 5.01 ERA in 6 starts, but a 2.12 ERA and 0.824 WHIP in his last 3 starts.
Detroit's Matt Boyd has a 3.90 ERA and 1.171 WHIP in 11 starts, but a 8.59 ERA and 1.840 WHIP in his last 3 starts. Note that it wasn't just one bad outing, he gave up at least 4 and threw 5 or fewer innings in all 3.
It's also worth noting that Boyd hasn't had much luck with Seattle in his career. He's faced them 4 times and has a 4.56 ERA and 1.183 WHIP Give me the Mariners +104!
