Race of the Week: Saturday's Albany at Golden Gate
    June 10, 2021 | By Jeremy Plonk

$50,000 ALBANY STAKES AT GOLDEN GATE FIELDS

    Saturday, June 12, 2021

    The Lead:
Closing weekend of the winter-spring meet at Golden Gate Fields features Saturday's $50,000 Albany Stakes before the curtain is drawn on Sunday. Eight turf sprinters are in the Race 9 spotlight Saturday, part of the lucrative Golden Hour pick four matching the final 2 races on the card at GGF and Santa Anita. The Albany is Golden Gate's key turf sprint stakes on the annual calendar.

    Field Depth:
The three stakes winners in the field are BETTOR TRIP NICK, BRANDOTHEBARTENDER and TAP BACK. The former two have kept the strongest company lines consistently among this field. With a lack of turf stakes sprinting in NoCal, it's not unexpected to see the class risers outnumber the proven stakes commodities.

    Pace:
It's 5 furlongs on the grass, and you expect it to be fast. BETTOR TRIP NICK from the rail, EXHALTING, TAP BACK and even GIVE ME THE LUTE all can contribute to the immediate tempo. A strong closer has a shot if good enough.

    Our Eyes:
Leading jockey Kyle Frey partners with rail speed BETTOR TRIP NICK as last year's Alcatraz Stakes third-place finisher returns to turf for the only time since that front-running mile effort in June 2020. One of two entered for trainer Quinn Howey, BETTOR TRIP NICK is in the right hands with Frey. Betmix stats show that he's a 29% winner in Golden Gate turf sprints over the past 3 years. Howey also sends out longshot class riser HONG KONG KOWBOY.

Pressing BETTOR TRIP NICK from the start next door in the 2-hole will be GIVE ME THE LUTE. Despite turning back from route trips to a sprint, this one won a pair of turf sprints last summer at GGF on the front end -- so you know he can scoot. Trainer Andy Mathis had won the Albany Stakes in 2019 and 2020 with Mikes Tiznow, and will look for a barn three-peat with GIVE ME THE LUTE. Mathis trainees are a rousing 32% winners in local turf sprints the past 3 years, according to Betmix.

EXHALTING returns north after a Santa Anita sojourn with Doug O'Neill's barn. He had won 3 straight in NoCal last year before the move. He is absolutely 1-way speed in that he's got to shoot to the front to have his best chance. It could be crowded up there. He's also a 3-year-old taking on elder horses for the first time, providing another significant hurdle.

BRANDOTHEBARTENDER is the apparent late threat. He's won rallying in the Sensational Star at Santa Anita while turf sprinting, and also going a turf mile in SoCal stakes company. Trainer Craig Dollase has had success in this race in the past, and also brought this gelding to GGF to finish third in the 2019 Albany Stakes when the pace players ran 1-2 in a carousel throughout the 5 furlongs. That's always a danger for closers, but he gets a dynamite set-up.

    Most Certain Exotics Contender:
BRANDOTHEBARTENDER should be moving best late with a series of 90+ BRIS late pace figures.

    Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
SLAM DUNK SERMON could be finishing well for a share under Frank Alvarado, an ever-dangerous turf pilot on this circuit. He was 3-5 on grass last week most recently to underscore his longtime success on the lawn.

    Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$25 exacta key-box BRANDOTHEBARTENDER with BETTOR TRIP NICK and GIVE ME THE LUTE ($100).

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

      June 12, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a 13-race card scheduled with the feature coming in Race 8, the Miss Versatility Open Trot with a $30,000 purse. The 0.50 Early Pick 4 begins in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 Guaranteed Pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 6

2-Harambe Deo (3-1)-Went to Phl, got some class relief and has been very good winning the last 2 and making it look easy. Winner in 10 of 38 Big M starts, and did beat better than this at the end of last year here. Best to respect, the upswing may continue.
4-Chaser Hanover (5-1)-Trip dependent 5-year-old does best working racing near the top of the stack. Mark Mac should be able to work a cozy trip and get a good seat. Could offer a square price and take a picture with an efficient trip.
6-Ima Real Ladys Man (4-1)-Drops to a spot to shine in a competitive race. Tetrick is back in the bike and he had success steering this Cullipher trainee back in the spring. Fits with this crew and raced a .53 back half versus better in last.

      Race 7

2-Bettor Notbitter A (7/2)-Was scratched sick on 5-5 but before that was claimed by Cullipher and raced evenly in a 151.1 mile. This race is a real taffy pull and will take a swing that Tetrick's choice will be ready to go. Has hit the board in 7 of 9 here with 3 pictures.
6-Kingofthejungle (5-1)-Missed a start on 6-5 when was scratched ineligible. Did have a nice run of competitive efforts before that and there isn't anyone to be afraid of in this field. Should have the gate speed to be put in play early on.
10-TJ Blast (3-1)-The Quevedo barn must like this 8-year-old, was claimed away on 5-29 for $15k and they took him back for $17k on 6-5. Is only 1-20 this year but would probably go off as an odds-on choice with a good post draw. Allard should get him to blast out and land on top. The issue is finishing off the mile but this looks like a softer spot than the last couple.

      Race 8

4-Next Level Stuff (9/5)-Versatile mare is the winner of 2 straight at this level, has won on the engine or by coming off cover. This appears to be a 2-horse contest and Tetrick should have her ready to stand tall down the lane.
5-When Dovescry (5/2)-Not sure who will be leading at the half pole but Miller would probably like to be sitting on top. This should be an interesting battle between 2 very nice mares and 2 of the best pilots in the game.

      Race 9

2-Tattoo Artist (7/2)-Has been battling some tough customers in Graduate action and drops into a much more comfortable spot. TMac is back between the pipes for his 2nd tour of duty and he should have this Ryder trainee in control from the word go.

      0.50 Early Pick 4

      2,4,6/2,6,10/4,5/2
      Total Bet=$9

Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 6/12/21

        June 12, 2021
Every Friday and Saturday handicapper Jeff Siegel offers his best wagering opportunity from a selected North American racetrack. These “Best Plays” can take the form of a win wager, exacta, trifecta, or a daily double, pick-3, pick-4 or pick-6. Selections are listed in chronological order.

        *

Belmont Park Race 4 - Post time: 2:33 ET
        5-Big Everest (4-1)

Displayed plenty of ability in his only prior outing last October when an excellent runner-up to subsequent stakes winner Hard Love over this same Belmont Park turf course while more than three lengths clear of the rest. The 3-year-old English-bred colt shows a steady, healthy work pattern for his comeback, gets Lasix, and goes for a stable that has very strong stats with layoff runners. J. Rosario should have this sophomore colt within range throughout, so at 4-1 on the morning line let’s make him a win play and rolling exotic single.

        *

Churchill Downs Race 11 - Post time: 11:10 ET
        3-Smith's Point (5/2)

Was off slowly, raced greenly and fell far back during the early stages of her debut over six furlongs on Kentucky Oaks Day but took hold on the turn and produced a serious late run to finish a highly promising and rapidly closing third. With that bit of experience behind her and with today’s extra quarter of a mile to work with, the daughter of Bernardini should step forward in a big way for a barn that has outstanding stats with second-time starters. The C. Brown-trained filly offers excellent wagering value at or near her morning line of 5/2 both in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.

          RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
          Use: 3-Prince Magician; 5-My Summer Dream; 6-Mahaamel

Forecast: The Saturday opener is a messy maiden claiming turf sprint that requires a spread in rolling exotic play. We’ll go three-deep but any of the seven entrants could win. Mahaamel didn’t get the best of runs when crossing the wire fifth (but moved up to fourth) in a similar affair last month. With a clean start today and an extra half-furlong to work with, the Irish-bred gelding might be able to tag the speed. My Summer Dream sprints for the first time in his fifth career start and adds blinkers, so the Summer Front gelding has at least a couple of reasons to improve. Prince Magician, the 2-1 morning line favorite, is an 11-race maiden and therefore not one to trust but on form he’s a major player and on pure numbers he’s good enough to win. Tread lightly here.
          *
          *
          RACE 2: Post: 1:35 PT Grade: X
          Use: 1-Bella Vita; 2-Private Mission; 4-Big Sweep

Forecast: We’ll pass this contentious first-level allowance sprint while including three of the five starters on our rolling exotic ticket. State-bred double stakes winner Big Sweep has been out of action since last August but has trained like she’s fit and ready for M. Glatt and earned speed figures during her juvenile campaign that are better than par for this level. She’s 6/5 on the morning line and based on established form deserves to be. Bella Vita probably is better on turf than dirt, but she’s trained well since raced and could return to winning form after racing above her conditions in a much tougher spot last time out. Private Mission, away since November, won her debut over this local main track so we know she can fire fresh and could easily inherit the role as the controlling speed. She’s a first-time Lasix user and blew out with half mile bullet drill in 47 1/5 seconds (fastest of 68) last week.
          *
          *
          RACE 3: Post: 2:09 PT Grade: B
          Use: 4-Invictatatus; 5-Erotic

Forecast: Invictatatus, a respectable fourth in a tougher starter’s allowance turf sprint last month, shows up in a restricted (nw-3) $35,000 claimer today and is reunited with “win rider” A. Cedillo. Effective sprinting or routing and on turf or dirt, the A. Marquez-trained gelding should fold into a comfortable pace-stalking trip and then have every chance to seal the deal from the quarter pole home. Erotic is just two-for-25 during his career but at both of those victories were earned over the Santa Anita turf course. He’ll be running on late. These are the two we’ll be using in rolling exotic play with preference on top to Invictatatus.
          *
          *
          RACE 4: Post: 2:41 PT Grade: B+
Use: 1-It’s Simple; 3-Sally Stanford; 8-Gianna’s Wild Cat

Forecast: Juvenile fillies sprint five furlongs in the Pick-6 opener with Sally Stanford receiving top billing based on a work tab that points her out as the quickest of the quick. The S. Miyadi-trained filly has done everything right in the a.m. while never being allowed to show her best speed. Today, finally, we’ll see how fast she really is. Gianna’s Wild Cat is another that has shown ability in a.m. preps and while she’s probably not as quick as ‘Stanford the daughter of Ministers Wild Cat acts like she can finish a bit. It’s Simple accomplished most of her preparation at San Luis Rey Downs before recording a couple of gate drills at Santa Anita. She appears to have good early speed and if she breaks running from the rail the daughter of Nyquist could have a say in the matter. These are the three we’ll be including on our rolling exotics with the main emphasis going to Sally Stanford.
          *
          *
          RACE 5: Post: 3:16 PT Grade: B-
          Use: 6-Liar Liar; 5-Foothill

Forecast: Liar Liar is a first-off-the-claim play for P. Miller (superior stats with this angle) following a perfect trip score in a $50,00 optional claimer over this course and distance last month. Truthfully, it wasn’t much of a race, but the Irish-bred colt has better outings to go back to, so if he brings his “A” game he should be tough right back. Foothill has steadily rising numbers and most recently outran his 18-1 odds when a troubled third in a state-bred allowance turf miler. In a field without much speed, the son of Vronsky should inherit a good stalking position and with good racing luck this time could make a serious run for it.
          *
          *
          RACE 6: Post: 3:48 PT Grade: B
          Use: 1-Li’l Grazen; 3-Alice Marble

Forecast: Alice Marble earned a strong speed figure – one that is considerably better than par for this level - when breaking her maiden over this track and distance in her first outing since last October and clearly is a much better type now than then. The daughter of Grazen has trained well since that late April victory so we suspect she’ll run as good if not better today. F. Prat stays aboard and will have her within striking range throughout. Li’l Grazen is slower on numbers than ‘Marble but she’s likely to produce a significant forward move in her first start since being claimed by D. O’Neill for $20,000. The veteran mare has looked sharp in the a.m. for her new connections and with a clean break from the rail should find herself in good ground-saving, stalking position. We’ll include both in rolling exotic play and then press with extra tickets on top keying Alice Marble.
          *
          *
          RACE 7: Post: 4:19 PT Grade: B+
          Use: 1-Equilove; 6-California Kook

Forecast: Equilove was an impressive winner over this turf course in her U.S. debut when beating maidens in March but then lost her best chance with a poor start in a similar first-level allowance grass sprint here the following month. She’s trained very well since, projects to enjoy a good second flight, ground-saving trip, and switches to R. Gonzalez, who rides plenty of live runners for the P. D’Amato barn. At 4-1 on the morning line, she offers good wagering value both in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics. California Kook probably is using this sprint race as a prep for more serious route assignments down the road, but she’s certainly faced much tougher competition than she’s seeing today and is reunited with F. Prat, who has won on her in the past. If she’s not too rusty in her first outing since December, the P. Miller-trained daughter of Boisterous could make some serious noise from off the pace.
          *
          *
          RACE 8: Post: 4:52 PT Grade: B
          Use: 3-Fashionably Fast; 5-Brickyard Ride

Forecast: We’re not quite sure what we’ll get from Brickyard Ride today but if the good version shows up he’ll be hard to catch. The likely controlling speed but beaten in his last pair at odds of 3/5 and 1/5, the son of Clubhouse Ride has burned up the track in a.m. preps since that last disappointing run so we could easily see him bounce back with a major performance. If so, he’ll be long gone. Fashionable Fast is clearly the most dangerous of the late-running types and there will be plenty of early heat in here to compliment his style. Always most effective around one turn, the Lucky Pulpit gelding is a four-time winner over the Santa Anita main track and will get the patient ride he requires from regular pilot T. Pereira. Both should be included in rolling exotic play but because he’s more dependable we’ll put Fashionable Fast slightly on top.
          *
          *
          RACE 9: Post: 5:26 PT Grade: B
          Use: 2-Colosi; 3-Contagion; 9-Cono

Forecast: Contagion was victimized by a lack of pace when a non-threatening second at 30 cents on the dollar in a starter’s allowance $12,500 main track miler last time out but we’ll give him another chance today in a field with plenty of speed signed on. He likes to lag and produce a late kick and with F. Prat staying aboard the P. Miller-trained gelding – a three-time winner over the Santa Anita dirt track – can bounce back. Colosi was a convincing winner over our top pick when they squared off last month and could do it again given his ideal stalking style. Three times victorious in five career outings over the Arcadia main strip, the M. Glatt-trained son of City Zip is fast on figures and in peak form. Cono is the likely pacesetter and will take them as far as he can. The M. McCarthy-trained gelding drops to his lowest level ever and could get very brave if not policed early.

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Santa Anita - Race #3
#1 Indy Jones Obviously some concern about a guy who has never hit the board in nine lifetime turf starts, but eight of those races came around one turn, and maybe he brings something better while getting in light off a useful comeback run.
#3 Sea of Liberty She has occasional route pace that might keep her in touch early while cutting back for this one, and the class drop certainly won't hurt the cause.
#4 Invictatus Doesn't seem entirely out of the question here, but the form is definitely better going long, so he's probably a bit more likely underneath at this kind of trip.
Race Summary Indy Jones should offer a fair price, but he could be sitting on something better while up close to a modest set of splits. Intrigued.
            Santa Anita - Race #4
#8 Giannas Wild Cat Her older brother is Dylans Wild Cat who was stakes placed at 2, and this one seems to be moving well enough in the mornings. Chance against an iffy group?
#4 Drizella Looks like the one to beat after battling with an eventual 10-length winner, but she was still clear of the show horse that day. Tough if she's better here.
#3 Sally Stanford Debuts with a little bit of appeal in a race I don't trust a ton, and she works fine in the morning. Prefer the top pair, but could see having her on the wider tickets.
Race Summary Giannas Wild Cat has the pedigree to be a decent one, and outside of Drizella, there isn't a ton in here on paper. If she can take after her brother, she can be a handful here.
            Santa Anita - Race #8
#5 Brickyard Ride A little worried that he's heading the wrong way, but he had company the entire way last out and might be able to turn his form around with an easier trip.
#3 Fashionably Fast He's quick enough to be right up near the top in the early going, and he should be in the perfect spot to assume command if 'Ride starts backing up.
#1 Colt Fiction Handled the top choice last out after getting that good setup, and his dirt form stacks up quite well with these. Chance.
Race Summary Brickyard Ride has dangerous pace and might be able to bounce back after fading last time out under pressure. Thinking this race will tell us quite a bit about where he's at right now.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Northfield Park - Race #1
#8 WANNA ROCK Well handled in win at Scioto, early position will be the key.
#1 RACING FORABBER Has speed and rail and can make good use of it with Wrenn.
#4 ALWAYS MONA Draws better post in bid for third consecutive win.
Race Summary Scioto Downs invader Wanna Rock sat a perfect pocket trip as the odds-on favorite, surged through the passing lane in mid-stretch and is well-spotted for a repeat victory. Play 8-1 and 8-4 exactas.
              Northfield Park - Race #6
#5 DIVA DALI Rallied wide but from too far back, re-claimed by Rhoades.
#2 SANNA CRUZA A Tired from close up, passed by rallying repeater at the Meadows.
#6 FOOLISH TERROR Steps up off the claim, looking for five wins in a row.
Race Summary Diva Dali had a fast pace to run at, launched a 3-wide bid around dead cover at the 3/4-mile mark but couldn't reach the odds-on favorite as her four-race winning streak ended. She can strike again off the Rhoades re-claim. Play 5-2 and 5-6 exactas.
              Meadowlands - Race #6
#4 CHASER HANOVER Nightmare trip on drop to this level, today's Best Bet.
#8 WES DELIGHT Rallied through :26.4 final quarter to win, gets plenty of pace to run at.
#6 IMA REAL LADYS MAN Late runner gets ideal setup, use underneath in gimmicks.
Race Summary Chaser Hanover was trapped 3-deep on the rail until early stretch, then shut off with run while others were in full flight. He finished sixth, beaten less than 2 lengths, and is well worth his 5-1 morning-line price. Play a 4 with 6,8 with ALL trifecta.

Golden Gate Fields - Race #8
#5 Sayin Grace Ran evenly on turf last time and returns to the main track, where he improved position to third; hasn't won since last year but often has been in the hunt. Well spotted here.

In the Main Event of UFC 263 This Saturday night, current Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya faces Marvin Vettori for a 2nd time…
Adesanya coming off a loss to Jan Blachowicz has some 2nd guessing his ability, Saturday night he's going to remind you. Marvin Vettori is a brawling Italian seeking to make it dirty and level change when available. Many suggest Izzy has bad takedown defense, but his roughly 85% takedown defend rate will be tested. Not only that but he defended many of Vettori's takedown attempts in their first meeting. Vettori had the most success in round 3 keeping Izzy down. Since their 2018 bout both men have evolved and grown in the sport. At the current line of Adesanya (-250) and Vettori (+210) a method of victory play here has value as a prop play.
Vettori's heavy pressure mixed with a brawling mentality should promote the type of exchanges Adesanya wants. Leaving himself open Marvin uses a hook heavy attack which Izzy's 6 inch reach advantage will come into play. No doubt he'll need to defend level changes, but in space and back in the larger UFC cage he'll have extra room. I love the price on a finish with the champion coming back down to the division he reigns King knocking out a rival. At the current line of Adesanya (-250) a method of victory play provides nice prop value. At +190, I'm very comfortable having some exposure at that price.

Play: Isreal Adesanya to win via KO/TKO (+190)
