Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 6/24/21

      June 24, 2021
Every Thursday through Sunday handicapper Jeff Siegel offers his best wagering opportunity from a selected North American racetrack. These “Best Plays” can take the form of a win wager, exacta, trifecta, or a daily double, pick-3, pick-4 or pick-6. Selections are listed in chronological order.

      *

Belmont Park Race 2 - Post time: 3:38 ET
      1-Grand Ave Girl (2-1)

This maiden sprint for fillies and mares appears to have come up relatively light, so let’s go with the newcomer Grand Ave Girl, a C. Brown-trained filly that has all the makings of a debut winner. Bred for intense speed, the $300,000 Keeneland yearling purchase has been impressive in her morning trials - See Workout - and if she leaves cleanly from the rail the daughter of Runhappy may take control early and never look back. She’s 2-1 on the morning line and at that price is worth a play in the win pool and as a rolling exotic single.
      *
      *
Belmont Park Race 5 – Post time: 5:13 ET
      7-The Golden Door (7/2)

The New-York bred turf specialist The Golden Door makes his first start since November and his first as a gelding in this nine furlong first-level allowance state-bred affair on grass. A clever maiden winner two runs back and then a better-than-looked closing fourth place finish (beaten a length) in a similar affair in his most recent start, the progressive son of Point of Entry seems likely to pick up where he left off and should thoroughly today’s extra distance. The D. Donk-trained 4-year-old retains Johnny V., sports a healthy series of workouts that should have him fit and ready, and catches a field that he should be able to handle. There’s wagering value at or near his morning line of 4-1 if you can get it.
      *
      *
Churchill Downs Race 3 – Post time: 5:58 ET
      4-Cavalry Charge (8-1)

Here’s a good price play in an open first-level allowance event for older horses on turf. Cavalry Charge, away since September but sporting a sharp series of workouts that should have him fit to fire off the bench, catches a pace scenario that should complement his pace-setting/stalking style. In fact, it would not be surprising if the son of Honor Code inherits the role as the controlling speed. A sharp maiden winner over this this course and distance three runs back and career-top effort when second in a similar affair when last seen in September, the D. Steward-trained gelding is listed at 8-1 on the morning line but probably will go a bit lower. An aggressive play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics seems appropriate.
      *
      *
Belmont Park Race 8 – Post time: 6:45 ET
      7-Catch a Bid (5/2)

Has found her niche as a late-running turf sprinter and is a perfect one-for-one over the Belmont grass course, so with this class drop into the third level allowance ranks the daughter of Real Solution appears well-spotted to return to winning form. The J. Sharp-trained mare projects to settle off the pace and then have her chance to blast home, so with a decent pace up front and room to rally from the head of the lane to the wire she projects to produce a winning late kick under regular rider L. Saez.
      *
      *
Churchill Downs Race 8 – Post time: 8:23 ET
      2-Texas Shuffle (5/2)

Second-time starter displayed real promise in her debut on the Kentucky Derby day program when overcoming a bit of a rough start and a wide trip to rally bravely in the final furlong to finish third, beaten less than a length. With that bit of experience behind her and a bullet workout (:47 2/5, fastest of 32) at Keeneland six days ago, the daughter of War Front should produce a significant forward move in this nine furlong grass affair for maiden fillies and mares. She makes a positive jockey switch to F. Geroux, is comfortably drawn inside, and projects to settle just off the leaders with a ground-saving trip. She’s worth every bit of her 5/2 morning line both in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Arlington - Race #2
#3 Baseball Politics Think the move around two turns might work in his favor after showing some tactical pace in that sprint debut. His stablemate is likely to attract some attention, so this guy might offer a playable price.
#6 Dynablue He is short on excuses now after 10 chances, but his overall form stacks up nicely while trying this level for the first time. His back synthetic tries were sort of modest, but he's good enough to land this.
#5 Yalikeanything Debuter doesn't meet the deepest field while landing in a reasonable spot, and the barn's first-call rider lands here instead of on the top choice.
Race Summary Baseball Politics can flash a bit of speed while stretching out, and E. T. Baird should be able to nurse him along near the top with this group.
        Arlington - Race #5
#7 Richy Debuter draws well for the first trip to post, and he has a pretty turfy pedigree for this sprint dash. The works seem to be moving in the right direction, and the price may be right today.
#6 Kosher Cowboy He ran well while on the pace in the debut at this same trip, and it would be no surprise to see him land this from close range at a shorter price today.
#4 Better Think Twice He moves into open company for this turf debut, but he has some pedigree for a short run like this on the lawn and can probably step forward in this second start.
Race Summary Richy doesn't meet a particularly imposing bunch on paper at first asking, and he brings some intriguing works with him to this unveiling. Chance at a playable number.
        Arlington - Race #7
#3 Slime Queen She was second best behind a win machine last time out, and she has really reliable turf form in a race with a 7/5 ML favorite making her turf debut.
#7 Naval Laughter Tough to argue with that romping win on the main track, but this will be the turf debut, and she seems sure to get bet a bit off the 19-length tally and big speed figure. Underlaid contender.
#6 Sense of Self She has been an underneath player with similar in the past, and she can probably find a good spot tracking the pace with these today.
Race Summary Slime Queen looks like she's the right one to try to beat the ML chalk, as she brings solid and consistent recent form and has chased some tough customers in recent races.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #7
#7 DIFFIDENT Duplicate of latest could lead to first win of lightly-raced 3yo season.
#1 PADRE Speed, rail and often in the hunt, but alot of chances at this level.
#8 FORTISSIMO FASHION Benefitted from breakers two back, went off stride in two starts surrounding it.
Race Summary Diffident rallied past the odds-on favorite but was out-kicked by the pocket sitter in an improved try that could serve her well in a field that is a combined 5-58 this year. Play a 7-ALL exacta.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#4 LIMOGES U.S. speed figures translate well for first start back home.
#5 ALL R WISHES Looms forward factor throughout in third start of cycle.
#7 LINDA'S PRIDE Took some money, broke stride at gate off layoff.
Race Summary Taking a price shot on Limoges, who earned the top two speed figures in the field in May while facing the winning favorites at the Meadowlands and Pocono Downs. Play 4-5 and 4-7 exactas.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #11
#2 UNCONTROLLABLE Second to same, sharp rival in the states, one to beat.
#1 CENTURY HANNIBAL Sports 5/2-1-1 record, consistent form and starts from rail.
#5 BIG BANG BANG Troubled in qualifier, post 10 in return, deserves another chance.
Race Summary Uncontrollable sat a pocket trip and ran second to the odds-on repeater through a :55.4 back half at Pocono Downs. Like his chances with a favorable post switch and McClure summoned to drive. Play a 1-2-5 exacta box.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Indiana Grand - Race #1
#3 Landofthepharoahs Has been in much tougher races and is the most likely to improve on this class drop; his Hawthorne dirt races are good enough to win this.
#5 Down Home Kitten Was second at a higher price two races back and won over this strip last year.
#6 Gamera Was a non-threatening third in his latest but that was a rapid race for this level, and stretching out and being on the front end could give him an edge.
Race Summary Landofthepharoahs has a decent closing move on occasion and can get back to good form for this claiming tag.
            Indiana Grand - Race #3
#9 All Star Justice Closed well for third last time and has been good in five of his last six; his only bad start recently came when he tried two turns.
#5 Son of Batman Has the speed to be in the hunt early and could be the one to catch when he turns for home; fits well here.
#1 Kingoftherainbow Pressed the pace in a stakes race last time and was a maiden winner two back; will go hard from the inside and will be a factor from the outset.
Race Summary All Star Justice will track a decent pace and will have a good spot on the outside from the start; has the kick to get past these.
            Indiana Grand - Race #6
#3 Strollin the Bayou Comes with two straight wins and three of her last file; looks deadly at this level.
#4 Daddy's Boo Led every jump and won easily last out at Arlington; was second at this level here two back and will be tough hombre on the front end.
#6 Hey Kitten Was an easy winner two back at Keeneland and tired last time in a strong allowance race at Churchill; big player.
Race Summary Strollin the Bayou won at Fair Grounds two races back and was strong in her first local effort; game and ready to win another.

                  # 4 PRINCESA DIVINA 3/1
                  # 3 ROJIZA 5/1
NUBE GRIS is tough to overlook as the bet in here. The drastic drop in competition can only help this entrant today. Navarro has a win percentage of 19 over the last month. PRINCESA DIVINA - Ought to come out sharp - I have liked the way this filly has moved sharply to the lead recently. Orozco has shown excellent profits (+88 return on investment ) at this distance/surface. ROJIZA - With Ortiz uptop her, this filly ought to be able to break out early in this race. Overall, has one of the top earnings per start in dirt sprint contests in this field.

                    Rating:

                    #1 WEEKENDER (ML=2/1)

WEEKENDER - It looks like Reyes had to become familiar with this gelding on June 8th when riding him for the initial time. Back on again today. This gelding's last speed rating is high enough to prove victorious here, I'll bet on him back again this time. Got some betting action in debut on June 8th at Belterra Park, but finished second. Has a shot in this event. Earnings per race is something that I believe can be a valuable handicapping factor. This thoroughbred is ranked at the top in this bunch.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MUTINY (ML=5/2), #3 STONE PALACE (ML=9/2), #6 MOESTER (ML=5/1),

MUTINY - This less than sharp equine will almost certainly be at the back of the pack as this field crosses the finish. STONE PALACE - In the last affair this horse finished sixth. Doesn't look good for his chances this time around. MOESTER - This horse will most likely be at the back of the pack as this group crosses the wire.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - WEEKENDER - I'm making a wager on this magnificent animal today. Should conserve energy shortly after the start then get clear down the stretch.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 WEEKENDER to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

                      # 5 GRAND AIR 3/1
I've got to go with BURN ME TWICE. Ought to be given consideration here on the basis of the figs in the speed department alone. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Gibson have shown sharp results recently. Looks respectable versus this field and should be one of the leaders. AWESOME IMAGE - Garcia has this gelding racing well and is a very good choice based on the very good speed figures posted in sprint races lately. Garcia has shown excellent profits (+17 ROI ) with horses in dirt sprint events. GRAND AIR - Has to be given a chance in this race if only for the quite good Equibase speed fig recorded in the last contest. Overall the speed figures of this equine look very good in this contest.

                        Belmont Park - Race #8 - Post: 6:45pm - Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $96,000 Class Rating: 102

                        Rating:

                        #2 JAKARTA (ML=5/1)
                        #7 CATCH A BID (ML=5/2)
                        #6 KARAK (ML=6/1)
                        #5 ROBIN SPARKLES (ML=9/5)

JAKARTA - This equine has the class to win the race. A tactical ride by Ortiz, and this one could bound home the winner. Ran a lackluster race at Belmont Park last out. Racing under better track conditions puts this mare at the top of my contenders list. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here. CATCH A BID - This thoroughbred obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has registered the highest Equibase speed figure on the turf at the distance-surface. Just check out her most recent speed rating, 92. That one fits in this group. Horse made up some ground in deep stretch last time out on May 14th at Pimlico. That race is better than it looked. Sharp moves this animal here to Belmont Park from Pimlico. Looking at the horse's past performance lines, she has shown the ability to win at multiple tracks. KARAK - This entrant could be tough in today's race, especially since Velazquez rode last time out and now should be better acquainted with this one. Ward is strong in grass sprints. This horse should have no allowances if she doesn't win. When 'Johnny V' and Ward join forces on animals the winning percent has been good at 40. ROBIN SPARKLES - I have to like this filly's chances at the shorter trip. Brown is solid in turf sprints. This animal should have no alibis if she doesn't win. This thoroughbred coming off a strong performance in the last 30 days is a contender in my opinion. I like this filly. Has the topmost (EPS) earnings per start in this one.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 MADELEINE MUST (FR) (ML=5/1), #3 TRUE CASTLE (ML=6/1),

MADELEINE MUST (FR) - This mare showed very liitle last time. TRUE CASTLE - This mare didn't do much for me last time out of the box. Improbable that the speed fig she notched on May 20th will hold up in this clash.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - CATCH A BID - I like using the TrackMaster turf figures. This noble animal has the best last race fig.
