Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 6/25/21

      June 25, 2021
Every Thursday through Sunday handicapper Jeff Siegel offers his best wagering opportunity from a selected North American racetrack. These “Best Plays” can take the form of a win wager, exacta, trifecta, or a daily double, pick-3, pick-4 or pick-6. Selections are listed in chronological order.

      *

Belmont Park Race 8 – Post time: 4:40 ET
      2-Amy C (2-1)

Both of her prior outings were accomplished over the Deauville all-weather surface but there’s no reason this European import shouldn’t be equally effective on grass. Following a gate-to-wire trouncing of a good maiden field in France in early March, she seeks to resume her winning ways for the C. Brown/I. Ortiz, Jr. team in this first-level allowance middle distance affair on turf. The English-bred 3-year-old filly a first-time Lasix user with a recent bullet workout at Saratoga to have her plenty fit, and from her inside draw she projects to enjoy an ideal ground-saving trip either on the front end or from a stalking position for a barn that hits at a superb 27% with first-time shippers in North America.
      *
      *
Churchill Downs Race 10 – Post time: 5:26 ET
      7-Aloha West (8-1)

This rapidly-developing 4-year-old colt just crushed a softer field over this track and distance when drawing away in powerful fashion by five lengths in a fast, highly-rated and visually pleasing performance, one that makes him dangerous right back despite the class hike into listed stakes company. Drawn comfortably outside and with the ideal late-running style for this extended sprint distance, the son of Hard Spun shows a recent bullet drill (47 seconds, fastest of 31) to give strong indication that another forward move is lightly. There’s good wagering value in the win pool and in rolling exotic play at or near his morning line of 8-1.
      *
      *
Churchill Downs Race 11 – Post time: 5:58 ET
      7-Flash Magic (3-1)

Showed plenty of promise in a trio of maiden races in California last year when trained by B. Baffert, including a sharp runner-up effort behind future multiple Grade-1 winner Princess Noor in her debut, so if she returns as well as she left for new trainer S. Asmussen she’ll be hard to beat in this extended sprint for maiden fillies and mares. The works, including a bullet gate work in 46 2/5 seconds (fastest of 141 for the distance) two weeks ago should have fit and ready, and as a first-time Lasix user and removing blinkers the daughter of Pioneerof the Nile looks capable of producing a winning late kick. At 3-1 on the morning line, we’ll make her an aggressive play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Charles Town - Race #6
#8 Door Buster Most of these want to be right up on the engine, and this filly has some finishing ability and super sharp recent form. Make it four in a row?
#1 Peppa Star Speed will have to send hard from the rail in a race with some other pace, but his best stuff keeps him in the mix with this group.
#3 Manarola She'll have to fire off the layoff, but she has some back runs that stack up well here with a good race shape waiting for her.
Race Summary Door Buster would be super attractive if offering anything like the 9/2 ML price, but I'm expecting that we'll have to accept something a bit shorter than that tonight.
        Charles Town - Race #7
#1 Cruz in the Castle Willing to take a swing with the rail pace in a spot where she might be quick enough to clear the other pace early. She's a bit cheap compared to most of these, but the price should be right for a front-end thrill.
#8 Gitane Steps up to try allowance company off the really nice debut win when settling and finishing well at 9/5. She might be decent, and the move around two turns might work in her favor.
#6 Eternal Heart Her form makes her a contender, but she's had five chances at this level and has never seriously threatened a winner under the wire. Underneath share again?
Race Summary Cruz in the Castle needs everything to go her way to land this at a price, but the hope is the other forward players will be willing to rate off her pace, and maybe a breather helps her get brave.
        Charles Town - Race #8
#5 Moonlit Shadow She's not going to offer any real price, but she's heading the right way and took a nice step forward when getting around two turns for the first time last out. Guessing she'll hang on today.
#6 Castle Review Tough to love with 13 starts under her belt, but she's a fairly reliable underneath type who won't have to run past her baseline effort to land a piece of this.
#3 Ellies Lil Castle Her best stuff would land this, and she can get a pretty good go of things near the top tonight. Think she's vulnerable late.
Race Summary Moonlit Shadow would probably score here with anything like her last, and she has been moving forward with every start. Graduation day in this third start off the break.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#2 RENDEZVOUS In good form since return, projects ideal trip from favorable post.
#5 DABARNDAWGSWATCHIN Led long way off layoff, stands 13/3-5-3 in career.
#8 CELIA BAYAMA Continues to be plagued by bad posts, won 4 of 10 as a 2-year-old.
Race Summary Rendezvous rallied to win in her first start of the year, then ran second behind the 3-to-5 favorite after a :55.4 back half. She should get ample pace flow to make another run at victory. Play a 2/5,8/ALL trifecta.
          Yonkers - Race #4
#6 LINDY AT THE BEACH Grinded first-over, stalled in mid-stretch as odds-on choice.
#4 DARBY HANOVER Set pace to stretch, held for minor awards in pair of sire stakes out of town.
#1 HEART OF MINE In control throughout as she extended unbeaten mark this year to five.
Race Summary Lindy At The Beach came out before the half-mile marker on a sloppy Plainridge Park surface, grinded first-over until she drew abreast of the 5-2 leader at the top of the stretch, then flattened out. She should track a lively pace and make a winning bid at a decent price.
          Hoosier Park - Race #3
#5 ETERNAL BLISS Blocked in early stretch, closed with a rush between to join photo finish.
#3 LOOKINTOMYEYES Ranged up first-over, dueled hard on turn, tired late.
#6 FOR SHARKS SAKE No factor after 'sick' absence, use in gimmicks off prior efforts.
Race Summary Eternal Bliss saved ground, lacked room in the stretch until she swung 3-wide and closed too late in repeat attempt. She meets several of the same rivals but won't be 23-1 tonight. Play a 5-ALL exacta.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Lone Star Park - Race #5
#1 Crazy Legs Hirsch Comes off an outstanding performance in which he was 3.5 lengths behind at the furlong grounds and won going away. Doesn't always fire but it looks like seven furlongs is perfect for him. Could bring a nice price to start off this attractive Pick 5.
#2 Bank Got a good run around horses during for home and stretched it out for a four-length win; has won three of his last five is on an on-again off-again form pattern.
#7 Good Scout Has led in his last two, which were both around two turns, and finished third and second in those; capable of a huge effort as he turns back in distance.
Race Summary Crazy Legs Hirsch will probably be overlooked in the wagering, but when he fires, he's certainly capable of winning at this allowance level. Loves seven furlongs and he'll be tough if he can stay within range.
Lone Star Park - Race #7
#1 Laughing Latinos Heads a Karl Broberg 1-1A coupled entry and can be deadly on the front end. Stablemate Sandbagger Al also has shown speed but he can be a strong player off the pace. Broberg might high-low this group.
#2 Dyess Looks like a winner in his latest at Louisiana Downs and hung for second; capable from just off the pace for the 21-percent Asmussen barn.
#6 Soul Ready Diodoro stable (24 percent) remains tough but this runner has been constant class drop; perhaps the dive to this price will pay off.
Race Summary The Broberg entry looks strong here with Laughing Latinos on the front end and Sandbagger Al trying for the perfect trip from just off the pace. Tough duo.
Lone Star Park - Race #9
#2 Shanny Go Nanny Calhoun runner is the one to beat in the finale of this Pick 5. She has been second in her last two and has faced tougher company than this. Gets the diploma tonight.
#5 Marlow Dropped to $7,500 last time and was claimed by Broberg; was third in a maiden special here three races back and figures in the mix.
#7 Roma's Choice Ran on well for fourth vs. similar last out and continued improvement gets her a piece of this. She's seven years old and has started only seven times and might have a surprise for them.
Race Summary Shanny Go Nanny was second going five furlongs two back and followed with another second and looked going in her first one around two turns. Due to score.

Lone Star Park - Race #1 - Post: 2:35pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,400 Class Rating: 67

                  Rating:

                  #1 CHUCKIES CHANCE (ML=3/1)

CHUCKIES CHANCE - The jockey/handler twosome of Alvarez and Davis has a strong return on investment together. Early zip is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. Davis drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more handicapping information to believe this horse should have a chance to win at this level.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 PLUTONIUM (ML=2/1), #4 WICKED REBEL (ML=4/1), #7 INITIATOR (ML=5/1),

PLUTONIUM - Finished third last time. Would have to advance to hit the board in today's race. Substandard speed figure last out at Lone Star Park at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't feel this horse will improve too much in today's race. WICKED REBEL - Can't wager on this entrant in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint race of late. In this situation, this steed's inability to close any ground in the last affair is a cause for concern. INITIATOR - Just don't think he is worth the risk at the probable odds.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 CHUCKIES CHANCE to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though
                  EXACTA WAGERS: 1 with [5,7]

Race 1 - Maiden Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $8500 Class Rating: 49

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 5 COOKIN ROSES 9/5
                    # 2 MEETMEINSTLOUIE 9/2
                    # 3 PRINCESS MANDII 2/1
COOKIN ROSES is my choice. Molina will almost certainly be able to get this filly to break out sharply in this contest. Is tough not to examine given the company run in lately. Recent numbers for the jockey - 20 win percent - make this filly stand out in this group of animals. MEETMEINSTLOUIE - Reason to like this filly as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days. Have to take a chance on this filly with the solid earnings per start in dirt sprint events.

                      # 7 BOLD FIGURE 12/1
I have to consider SOUTHERN MAMA here. Has strong Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a bet in this race. Have to wager on this filly with the strong earnings per start in turf sprint races. Had one of the top Equibase Speed Figs of this group of horses in this race in her last race. ON BRILLIANT - With Leon getting the mount, watch out for this equine. Has to be considered based on the quite good Equibase speed fig recorded in the last contest.

                        Churchill Downs - Race #8 - Post: 4:22pm - Allowance - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $102,000 Class Rating: 96

                        Rating:

                        #7 VIVIDLY (GB) (ML=7/2)
                        #1 PETER'S KITTEN (ML=6/1)
                        #3 EMILY'S OASIS (ML=9/2)

VIVIDLY (GB) - In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the turf. This one has the highest average class figure in the bunch. Have to watch for this animal on the grass. Last race at Churchill Downs, scored a big turf fig. Have to think she can do it again right here in this race. This horse has increased her speed figs in each of the last 2 races. That kind of progress is worth taking notice of. PETER'S KITTEN - Santana and Maker teamed up together are a horse gambler's friend. Last ran at Churchill Downs and finished fifth. Reviewing her PP lines, I see she was close at the end, within 5 of the winner. EMILY'S OASIS - That 97 fig this filly registered in her last event tells me she's a main player this time out. I expect a lot from this fine animal. Her speed figs under similar conditions are tops in this field. Recent Equibase speed figures show dominant pattern of improvement.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #14 SEASIDE RETREAT (ML=2/1), #15 GRAYSONSMACHO GAL (ML=3/1), #6 DEMODOG (ML=4/1),

SEASIDE RETREAT - Finished first in her most recent performance with a mediocre rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch. GRAYSONSMACHO GAL - There's early zip, zip, and more speed in this race. Doesn't seem too promising for this equine. Don't believe this mount will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class rating. DEMODOG - The pace situation just isn't too promising for this speed merchant. Many other ponies would have to scratch to improve her hopes. She probably cannot repeat that last stretch drive effort and win against this field.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #7 VIVIDLY (GB) on top if we're getting at least 3/1 odds

#8 No Payne-came off a four month layoff last out, fought for the lead, got a head in front in the stretch but tired late and missed by 2 ½ lengths to a repeat winner. She needed that one, keeps Rosario and will be tough.

#11 Kreesa La Wrote-beat our top pick two starts back then did not fire last out going a mile. She cuts back to her best distance and is the one to beat.

#4 Get the Candy-ran well in her debut to miss by only 2 lengths on the turf at Aqueduct then did not fire on the main track. She is coming off a layoff but switches back to the grass, gets Saez and should be in the payoffs.

#12 Empress of War-fought for the lead but had to settle for second missing by less than a length in her debut last out. She switches to the turf today but is bred for it, adds blinkers and will be close from the start.

Against right-handed pitching on the season these teams are comparable. The Angels with a 104 wRC+ and the Rays at 106. But in the month of June the Rays have really dropped off with a 94 wRC+ compared to the Angels 119.
The Rays will be having a bullpen game as Andrew Kittredge will get the start. But he has been much better in his career coming out of the bullpen. When named as a starter the past three seasons his average game score is less than league average at 48. He’s never pitched more than two innings as a starter, which means the suddenly struggling Rays bullpen will be in for a long day. Yesterday they got 75 pitches out of Michael Wacha, and still need 57 from the bullpen. And that game was a shutout of the Red Sox. Coming off that key series with the division leader, we can see a bit of a letdown from the host here.
Griffin Canning has been around since 2019, and unlike many young pitchers he hasn’t seen much of a drop-off when going on the road. Overall he has a league average 50 game score his last seven starts, with a 57 at Boston and a 53 at Oakland included.
This line has been bet down slightly since the opener, but it still provides nice betting value on the road underdog. Tampa at 3-7 lately doesn’t deserve to be this high a favorite.
