My free play is on the NY Yankees at 7:05 ET. The Yankees will host the Mets this weekend in the latest edition of the "Subway Series." The teams met six times during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and each was decided by three runs or fewer plus five of those games took place in the Bronx due to the Mets' COVID-19 issues. The teams have similar records (Mets are 41-36 and the Yankees 41-39) but while the Mets play in the NL East (MLB's weakest division), the Yankees play in one of its toughest (the AL East). The Mets are in first place, 2 1/2 games up on the Nationals (only other team in the division with a winning record), while Yankees are in fourth place, NINE games back of the first-place Red Sox, who own the AL's best record. Both teams enter this weekend series struggling. The Mets won eight of 10 games from June 5-16 to move 10 games over .500, but they are 6-11 since. During those 17 games, the Mets have been blanked four times and have scored three runs or fewer 11 times, including a 4-3 loss to the host Atlanta Braves on Thursday. The Mets lost the previous night 20-2 in Atlanta and then despite deGrom's 14 Ks, lost when Freeman singled home the winning run with a low line drive that deflected off reliever Seth Lugo in the bottom of the ninth. The Yankees stood at 28-19 on May 23, after a six-game winning streak but they are 13-20 and have lost FIVE of six since that six-game winning streak. The Yankees blew a four-run lead to the Angels in an 11-8 loss on Wednesday and then saw Thursday's game washed out. The starters for tonight are Taijuan Walker (6-3, 2.38 ERA) for the Mets and Jordan Montgomery (3-4, 4.06 ERA) for the Yankees. Walker owns the better W-L record and the better ERA but note that BOTH pitchers own excellent moneyline records. The Mets are 11-3 in Walker's 14 starts, giving him MLB's seventh-best moneyline mark at plus-$646 (at $100/game). As for Montgomery, the Yankees are 11-4 in his 15 starts (plus-$450). Breaking the numbers down further, we find that Walker owns a 1.52 ERA in seven home starts but a 3.32 ERA in seven away starts. 3.32 is NOT bad but it is more than DOUBLE that of his home ERA. That becomes significant when one notes that Montgomery's road ERA is 5.53 (eight starts), compared to his excellent 2.61 home ERA (seven starts). Throw in the fact that Walker is 0-3 with a 3.26 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees (teams are 1-3) and I'll back the Yankees. Want more? The left-handed Montgomery is facing a lineup that is just 8-13 vs lefty starters in 2021, averaging a puny 2.8 RPG. Good luck...Larry

The Tampa Bay Lightning hold a decisive 2-0 series lead and look to extend it going into game three in Montreal. The goalie roles were reversed in Tampa with Vasilevskyi out-dueling Carrie Price. I can’t believe that Price is going to allow his play in Tampa to stand as his record in a cup final. The Canadiens have arguably been an underdog in each series leading to the final and be successful in spite of the odds. Look for them to rebound in their home arena.
