My free play for Thursday is going to be in the WNBA, where I'm laying the points with the Los Angeles Sparks against the Atlanta Dream.

Neither team has lived up to any sort of expectations, with both in or near the cellar of each conference.

But Los Angeles, which is in last place in the West but one spot ahead of Atlanta in the overall standings, has now won two straight and can move ahead of the Washington Mystics, who have a tough one tonight in Phoenix against the fifth-place Mercury, who sit third in the West.

At home, the Sparks will put their defensive prowess to work and shut down the Dream. They'll also be able to find their offense, which has been stagnant at times but now faces the worst scoring defense in the WNBA.

Atlanta has lost six straight and nine 10, while it's a disappointing 3-8 on the road this season, including Tuesday's overtime loss to these same Sparks in this same building, 85-80.

Tonight is Atlanta's third straight road game in five days, and since the Olympic break ended.

L.A. opened its final stretch with a 75-70 home win over Indiana, and then registered Tuesday's win over Atlanta.

Sparks win again, and cover much easier this go round.

This will be a bullpen game for the L.A. Dodgers, but that is not necessarily a bad thing since they are facing a New York Mets team that has tailed off mightily down the stretch.

Yes, the Mets did win in extra-innings yesterday in their game at San Francisco, but they come into this one with 6 wins over their last 20 games and yesterday's win snapped a 5-game overall slide!


The Dodgers have contributed to the Mets demise, as they just swept 3 off of New York last week in Queens and come into this first of four at home against the Mets having won 6 straight now and 10 of their last 11 overall.


Los Angeles has also won 7 of the last 8 series meetings versus New York and to me it doesn't matter who Dave Roberts starts, the Mets offense has gone AWOL during the dog days of August, so play LA on the Run Line.

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Thursday is with the Philadelphia Eagles plus the points (or as a pick ‘em) versus the New England Patriots. Philadelphia (0-1) got upset last week at home against Pittsburgh by a 24-16 score as a 1-point favorite. Rookie head coach Nick Sirianni may feel some additional pressure to get his first victory under his belt with a long season likely on tap. New England (1-0) beat Washington by a 22-13 score last week in their opening preseason game — but now the Patriots go back on the road where they have failed to cover the point spread in 9 of their last 10 preseason games. Take Philadelphia plus the points. Best of luck — Frank.

I will take my chances with the Brewers on the -1.5 run line in Thursday's series finale against the Cardinals. I give Milwaukee a massive edge on the mound with them sending out Brandon Woodruff and St Louis going with Jon Lester.
Sure, Lester was solid in his last outing, giving up just 1 run in 5 2/3 innings. However, it came against a bad Royals team. In his previous two starts, Lester had given up 11 runs on 15 hits with just 6 K's in 10 1/3 innings. I fully expect him to get rocked in this one.
As for Woodruff, this is the kind of guy you want to back when taking a team to win by 2 or more. He's been great all year. He has a 2.18 ERA and 0.905 WHIP in 23 starts. He's got an even better 2.11 ERA and 0.826 WHIP in 12 road starts. He also owns a sensational 1.16 ERA and 0.810 WHIP in 9 starts vs NL Central teams this season. Give me the Brewers -1.5 (-119)!

Thursday MLB Free play. My selection is on Milwaukee over St. Louis at 7:45 pm et on Thursday.
The Cardinals had their chance to get a win in this series last night but wasted it by blowing a 3-0 lead (3-2 with one out and no one on base in the ninth inning). Now they'll be hard-pressed to pick themselves back up in a tough pitching matchup on Thursday.
Brandon Woodruff takes the ball for the Brewers. He's been lights out on the road this season with a 2.11 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. Here, he'll be starting on six days' rest so expect him to have a live arm for this one.
Behind Woodruff is a Brewers bullpen that owns a 3.26 ERA and 1.24 WHIP on the road this season and did a terrific job after Freddy Peralta left his start early last night.
Veteran Jon Lester gets another turn in the rotation for the Cards on Thursday. He's been awful no matter where he's pitched this season but has been particularly bad in two home starts since joining the Cards. In those two outings he allowed 11 earned runs on 15 hits in 10 1/3 innings.
The Cards bullpen coughed up last night's game and could be forced into extended work tonight with Lester averaging less than five innings per start. Take Milwaukee.
