Tonight I like the Giants to complete the sweep over the Mets.

New York is done! Toasted. Cooked. Put a fork in them and toss them in the trash heap.

The Mets fell yet again last night, this time 3-2 to the Giants a night after losing 8-0 to San Francisco.

New York is now just 6-17 for the month of August and their playoff hopes have all but vanished off the radar.

The Giants continue to lead all of MLB with an 82-44 record and they have won 4 of the 5 season series meetings against the Mets and 7 of the last 9 overall series meetings.

Alex Wood is 10-4 on the year and the Giants are 15-7 when he starts, while Carlos Carrasco has yet to win since joining New York as he enters at 0-2 with an ERA of 8.82.

The choice is obvious to me.

          5* SAN FRANCISCO

They have played their first pair in this series at Fenway Park Over the total, so look for the "hat trick" to be completed tonight when the Twins and Red Sox conclude their series from Beantown.

Minnesota is on a 5-0-1 Over run their last 6 games, while Boston has played Over in each of their last 4 this season.

3 of the last 4 in this year's season series have also topped the total.

John Gant has been a bullpen pitcher pretty much all season long, so don't count on him working deep tonight.

Throw in Chris Sale still working his way back into form after missing a long stretch of time and this one should play Over the total before the 9 innings are completed.

            2* MINNESOTA-BOSTON OVER

My free play for tonight will be the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics to stay under the posted total.

Let's start with the streaking Yankees, who have been much hotter than their 11-game win streak dating back to July 30, when they first acquired Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers. You'd think the addition of Gallo, and then Anthony Rizzo on Aug. 4, would have bolstered the offense, but where we're seeing the Yankees thrive is on the mound during a 21-4 run that has seen the staff produce a 2.69 ERA.

Tonight the Yankees turn to Jameson Taillon, who has been damn near untouchable since June 24, going 7-0 with a 2.48 ERA in 11 starts. The Yankees are 10-1 in those outings. He's limited damage by allowing just eight home runs, and a mere 22 runs, just 18 of them earned. He'll do a good job here.

The Athletics are turning to James Kaprielian, who is 7-4 on the year, and has been exceptional in Oakland, going 5-2 with a stingy 1.47 ERA in seven starts there. He's been exceptional this month, going 2-0 in three starts - all of which were won by the A's - while he has a 3.31 ERA and allowed only one ball to leave the yard, spanning 16.1 innings.

I expect a pitchers' duel in this one, and the total to stay low.

              1* UNDER Yankees-Athletics

Play: Zac Eflin UNDER 4.5 Strikeouts
Pretty easy play here. Eflin is starting in his return from injury and has said he's going to pitch around 50 pitches. That's not very many, and that's going to have to be unbelievable efficient to get to five K's. Arizona strikes out above average, but all it's going to take is a couple hits along with a few ground outs and pop fly outs to eat up 50 pitches and Eflin will be done. We'll take the under.

Take Boston (#970) on the Run Line
My clients and I have cashed ‘right side’ winners with the Red Sox on the Run Line in each of Chris Sale’s first two starts since his return from the IL. Neither one has been much of a sweat, with Boston winning for their ace 16-2 and 6-0; Sale in command throughout. Minnesota’s John Gant is at the opposite end of the starting pitching spectrum, unable to make it out of the fourth inning in a spot start last time out. Look for a Red Sox lineup that has pounded out 25 runs over the last three games to hit Gant and the Twins bullpen behind him hard; another comfortable victory for Sale on the Run Line. Take Boston -1.5 Runs

969 Minnesota Twins at 970 Boston Red Sox -320, 10
The Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox set up between the chalk lines at Fenway Park to play the finale of a three-game set. The Twins have scheduled righty John Gant to oppose veteran left-hander Chris Sale.
Gant surrendered four runs over 3 1/3 innings in his last start, his first for Minnesota, which resulted in a loss to the New York Yankees. The 29-year-old righty has allowed 10 runs on 11 hits with a 17/3 K/BB rate in his 12 innings since being acquired from the St Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline.
The Twins have been vocal about limiting Gant's innings to no more than twice through the opposition's lineup. Sale shut down the offensively challenged Texas Rangers in his second start of the season. Sale struck out five in five scoreless frames in his last start. The victory moves his record to 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA since returning from the injured list. The Twins plan to use Gant as the first in an "Opener" like format, and Sales early form makes the Thursday free pick a play UNDER the TOTAL of 10 runs.

The visiting Washington Nationals ready for the finale of their divisional three-game set against the Miami Marlins on Thursday night. Southpaw Patrick Corbin (7-12, 5.82 ERA) takes the ball for the Nats to oppose Elieser Hernandez (0-1, 4.15) and the Fish.
Washington has dominated the series and aims to win the ninth of twelve divisional games vs. Miami. Corbin surrendered three hits and allowed one run across 6.1 innings in his last turn leading to a 4-1 win over Milwaukee. Miami right-hander Hernandez allowed five runs on five hits in just over four innings of work in a 5-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.
The Marlins are playing without energy or purpose. The Nats are utilizing the final two months to evaluate who is and who isn't ready for a role with the big club in a 2022 run at an NL East pennant. Free Pick is a play on Corbin and the Nats.

San Diego sends Yu Darvish out there against Max Scherzer to stop the bleeding as they have dropped three straight and 11 of the past 13. Hoping to avoid yet another crippling sweep and getting plus money, the Padres are the way to go here in tonight's free winner.
