The "gray beard" of starting AFC East QBs is Buffalo's Josh Allen at 25-years-old. Miami's second-year QB Tua Tagovailoa is 23 plus the Jets' Zach Wilson (22) and the Pats' Mac Jones (23) are a pair of rookies. Tua and Jones will meet for the first time on an NFL field as the New England Patriots play host to the Miami Dolphins in the season opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon. Jones was selected at No. 15 overall by the Patriots in this year's draft and is set to make his NFL debut after guiding the Crimson Tide to their 18th national title in a 52-24 rout of Ohio State a season ago. Tagovailoa is entering his second NFL season after being drafted No. 5 overall in 2020. He started nine of his 10 games for the Dolphins as a rookie last season. As a freshman at Alabama in 2017, Tagovailoa helped lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship with a 26-23 overtime victory against Georgia (he threw the game-winning TD pass in OT!).
Tua had an up-and-down rookie season in which he threw for 1,814 yards with 11 TDs and five INTs. Miami narrowly missed the playoffs, going 10-6 under second-year coach Brian Flores. Flores' spent 15 years as a Patriot assistant and was part of three Super Bowl champs. Miami has more exciting skill position players than New England but the Dolphins’ weak points are their offensive and defensive lines. The Patriots finished 7-9 in 2020, their worst record since going 5-11 in 2000 (Belichick's first season). This is Jones' first start but he's surrounded by a revamped offense. The Patriots reloaded this offseason with the signings of TEs Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, WRs Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne plus the re-acquisition of Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Brown.
New England is on an 11-4-1 ATS run as a division home favorite and note that Miami was outgained in SIX of its eight road games in 2020. Jones will become the first Patriots rookie QB to start a season opener since Drew Bledsoe did so in 1993. However, it is SURE worth noting that Under Belichick, QBs are 6-0 in their first career starts. Let's make that 7-0!
