Harper has raked against right handed pitching this season as he has a 1.159 OPS and .335 batting average compared to a .817 OPS and .266 batting average against southpaws. Tonight Harper faces a relative unknown in opener Connor Overton who has logged just 11 innings pitched in the majors between his time with Toronto and Pittsburgh this season. The adage and warning to know to understand the difference between overreacting to performances by college programs that are unexpected are mission-critical to the bottom line in the early stages of a campus campaign. Please don't sleep on this Thundering Herd squad, as they are competent on both sides of the football.
Marshall quarterback Grant Wells threw for 433 yards in Saturday's 42-38 loss to East Carolina. The Herd's running attack was in mid-season form. Tailback Rasheen Ali ran for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Appalachian State beat East Carolina in their season-opener 33-19.
The Marshall defense is better than they performed in the loss and is deeper and more talented in the trenches. What most believe and the opening numbers in this matchup reflect is a game filled with exciting plays and many points. This Herd vs. Mountaineers event will be played close to the vest, and in the end, Marshall lines up to try a game-winning field goal. Regardless of the success of the Marshall field goal attempt is a free pick and play on Marshall who is catching a touchdown handicap in this Thursday night event.
