Best Horse Racing Bets for Thursday, November 4, 2021
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, and Remington Park were the selected tracks for my racing picks for Thursday. Each of the tracks yielded a single morning-line favorite I could get behind, with the rest of my choices comprising a host of underdogs and even a longer-odds sleeper or two to keep our bankrolls fat and sassy.

Before you head on down to my picks, be sure to check out the entire race-cards for all three tracks at one of our best online racebooks.

              Good luck!
My Thursday Picks for Gulfstream Park

We’ll start on the all-weather track for race four, a five-furlong allowance optional claiming run for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I like the second-favored (at 5/2) Reinagol, ridden by top jockey Samy Camacho.

This three-year-old filly finished in the money five of her seven career starts, winning two, which puts her in the statistical lead in this six-horse field.

Victor Barboza, Jr. trains Reinagol for owners Saragol Stable Corp. and The Winning King, Corp.

Incidentally, you might want to keep an eye on the 6/1 Compensate, with Miguel Angel Vasquez in the irons. On paper, this four-year-old filly has an unimpressive record of seven money finishes in 15 starts, four of those wins, but a closer look at that history reveals aggressive (and perhaps over-ambitious) campaigning at the stakes level.
In an allowance race like this, she’ll do quite nicely.

Her trainer, Cam M. Gambolati, is no slouch, having taken Spend a Buck to a win in the 1985 Kentucky Derby.

Race six is a 5-1/2 furlong starter optional claiming run on the main track for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 9/2 fourth-favored R King Kong, piloted by Marcos Meneses.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed both of his career starts, finishing his first maiden attempt in third-place back in January, then winning his second attempt in August—both at Gulfstream. Not only does he have a (slightly) better record than the morning-line favorite, he has posted superior speed figures.

Georgina Baxter trains R King Kong for owners Averill Racing LLC, ATM Racing, and CCF Racing Stable, LLC.

We’re back on the all-weather track for race seven, a one mile and 70 yards starter optional claiming run for two-year-old fillies. I’m betting my two dollars on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, She Nasty, with Chantal Sutherland in the irons.

This filly moneyed three of her four career starts—all three of those wins. She may get some surprising pressure from the 6/1 Brittiz, but I believe She Nasty will prevail.

Jorge Delgado, who’s having a very good year, trains She Nasty for Heehaw Racing. Delgado has put Sutherland in the irons for all four of She Nasty’s pro races.
              Thursday’s Picks for Laurel Park

Let’s start on the turf course for race five, a 1-1/8 mile allowance optional claiming run for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 6/1 sleeper Rohrbacher, piloted by veteran jockey Angel Cruz.

This five-year-old gelding finished in the money 16 of his 18 career starts, winning six. In this 13-horse field, he’s a standout.

Regularly ranked among the top trainers in North America, Hugh I. McMahon trains Rohrbacher for owner Paul A. Hirsimaki.

If Rohrbacher doesn’t enter the starting gate, then redirect your wagering attention to the 5/1 You Must Chill, ridden by Jaime Rodriguez. Trained by Jamie Ness for owners Morris E. Kernan, Jr., Yo Berbs, and Jagger Inc., this five-year-old gelding moneyed 13 of his 18 career starts, winning six.

We move to the main track for race seven, a 5-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming run for two-year-old fillies. While I appreciate the fact that Laoban’s Legacy, the morning-line favorite, finished in the money of a Black Type stakes race, I’m still buying a win ticket on the second-favored (at 7/2) Click to Confirm, ridden by Angel Cruz.
My rationale is simple: Two starts, two wins—that’s Click to Confirm’s career record to-date. Brief but meaty, as they say.

Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon trains Click to Confirm for Mi Patria Racing.

Race eight is a 1-1/16 miles allowance optional claiming run on the main track for two-year-olds. I like the 9/5 favorite for this race—Mr. Mox, piloted by top jockey Jaime Rodriguez.

This gelding finished in the money three of his five career starts, winning two. Notably, he finished fifth in the 15-horse Maryland Million Nursery Stakes (Black Type) here at Laurel Park last month.

Jamie Ness trains Mr. Mox for owners Morris E. Kernan, Jr. and Jagger Inc. Ness has put Rodriguez in the irons for Mr. Mox’s two most recent races.
              Thursday Picks for Remington Park

Let’s start on the main track for race four, a six-furlong allowance run for Oklahoma-bred three-year-olds and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 7/2 morning-line favorite, Elusive War, ridden by veteran jockey Richard E. Eramia.

This three-year-old colt moneyed both of his career starts, finishing second in his initial maiden attempt in September, then graduating on his second attempt in October, both here at Remington Park. In this ten-horse field, that gives him a slight edge.

Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup veteran W. Bret Calhoun trains Elusive War for Levings Racing LLC. Calhoun tapped Eramia to saddle Elusive War for both of his pro races.

Race five is a 5-1/2 furlong allowance run on the main track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I like the 9/2 third-favored Maritime Empire, piloted by Stewart Elliott.
This three-year-old filly moneyed one of her two career starts, finishing fourth in her first maiden attempt in September , then winning her second maiden try last month.

Longtime racing veteran J. R. Caldwell trains Maritime Empire for owners Mike Abraham and Randy Eastburg.

Let’s move to the turf for race six, a five-furlong allowance run for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the second-favored (at 9/2) Pomeroy Haze, ridden by David Cabrera.

This four-year-old gelding finished ten of his 17 career starts in the money, with five of those wins. In September he finished third in the Remington Park Turf Sprint Stakes (Black Type). He’s been posting impressive speed figures throughout his career. Versus his competition in this 12-horse field, he’ll do.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers in 2020 for wins, Austin Gustafson trains Pomeroy Haze for owners Michael J. Mazoch and Linda Mazoch. Gustafson has had Cabrera saddle Pomeroy Haze for his last five races.

                    RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
Use: 7-Big Clare; 8-Taming the Tigress

Forecast: Familiar faces tangle in the Thursday lid-lifter, a state-bred turf miler for first-level allowance fillies and mares. Big Clare earned a career top speed figure when runner-up vs. similar at Santa Anita last month and not much more will be needed to handle this task. She’s a one-paced grinder and may lack a winning punch, but most of the others in the field aren’t all that keen on winning, either. J. Rosario will give her the patient ride she requires, so we’re expecting the P. D’Amato-trained daughter of Mr. Big to be along in time. Taming The Tigress stretches out for the first time, and if she’s ever going to stay a mile it’ll probably be in her first attempt. Bred to sprint but capable of inheriting the role as the controlling speed, the daughter of Smiling Tiger ran quite well in her grass debut last time out at Santa Anita when a willing but troubled runner-up and it may be significant that F. Prat, who has been riding Big Clare, jumps off to pilot this P. Miller-trained sophomore.

                    Use: 1-Defense Wins; 5-Adens Dream

Forecast: We’re normally don’t take Emerald Downs form at face value, but Adens Dream, a Pacific Northwest invader now in the J. Wong barn, always has been a hard-knocking, genuine sprinter and appears well-placed to pick up where he left off in this $16,000 claiming dash for older horses. In a small field of six without much early speed signed on, the veteran son of Wildcat Heir should be quick enough to establish the pace and keep on going while seeking his fourth win from his last five starts. On pure numbers he’s a fit on this circuit at this level. Defense Wins must leave from the rail (again) but drops below his claim level, retains F. Prat, and has never been off the board in five career starts over the Del Mar main track. He’ll be doing his best work late. We’ll give Adens Dream a slight edge on top but include both in our rolling exotics.

                    Use: 3-Tilted Towers; 5-Mikes Tiznow; 8-Texas Wedge

Forecast: Here’s a highly-competitive turf sprint for second-level allowance $80,000 optional claimers that drew a field of eight, most of whom have a legitimate look with their best race. Tilted Towers makes his first start following a M. Maker claim for $50,000 and moves up in class following a clever win three weeks ago sprinting on turf at Santa Anita. He projects to be in a good stalking position (behind the speedier Mikes Tiznow) and has shown in the past the ability to win with this type of trip. He’s a fit on numbers, picks up I. Ortiz, Jr., and offers some value at 6-1 on the morning line. Mikes Tiznow has been away for almost a year but his work tab at Golden Gate Fields should have him fit enough and the veteran gelding shows a prior win over the course for a trainer who has superior stats with layoff runners. Additionally, the son of Slew’s Tiznow has a proven record of firing fresh and regular rider R. Gonzalez stays aboard and knows him well. Texas Wedge may have lost a step or two but he’s exiting better races, is guaranteed a clean trip from his outside draw, and is reunited with “win rider” F. Prat. The ex-classer should have no excuses today.

                    Use: 3-Rish and Reward; 6-Zestful

Forecast: Risk and Reward earned a giant speed figure when easily handling first-level allowance foes at Los Alamitos in late September and looks dangerous on the one-level raise in this six-runner field. While form at Los Alamitos doesn’t always translate to the big tracks, this B. Baffert-trained sophomore shows a prior win over the Del Mar main track, picks up F. Prat, and seems certain to attempt gate-to-wire tactics once again, especially if he doesn’t have to be sent hard to make the running. The pace of the race certainly will be impacted if Zestful turns up as a late scratch. He’s entered back on Friday in the Thoroughbred Alliance Aftercare S.-G2 over a marathon trip but could stay put in this race, where he is listed as the 8/5 morning line favorite. He goes runs in this spot he’ll ensure a rapid early pace that won’t do Risk and Reward any favors. The P. Miller-trained gelding was extra game when prevailing in the Bull Dog S. at Fresno three weeks ago for career victory number 11 (from 37 starts) and we suspect that new rider L. Saez will be aggressive with the Ghostzapper gelding, who’s always preferred to get it on early. We’ll use both in our rolling exotics but based on the volatile pace flow we can’t play with any real degree of confidence.

                    Use: 2-Tezzaray; 3-Gimme Mo Baby; 6-Hemmerle

Forecast: We’ll go three-deep in the fifth race, a middle distance affair on grass for juvenile fillies. Hemmerle is the logical top pick after finishing a decent third in the much stronger Surfer Girl S. at Santa Anita last month. She remains well-regarded by trainer R. Mandella, and with rising numbers and an improving pattern this daughter of Tapit seems set to earn her diploma. Gimme Mo Baby is an intriguing shipper from Kentucky, where she hit the board in both of her starts, most recently when getting nosed out in a similar maiden grass affair at Keeneland while earning a speed figure very close to our top pick’s. The daughter of Jimmy Creed appears to lack tactical speed but her steady, grinding style should make a threat in the final furlong, especially if a decent early pace materializes. Tezzaray represent stranger danger from England in her North American debut. Third in both of her starts with respectable Timeform ratings, the P. Miller-trained daughter of Bated Breath shows a steady series of workouts at San Luis Rey Downs that should have her fit. With I. Ortiz, Jr. taking the call, she looks extremely live at 7/2 on the morning line.

                    Single: 5-Fenestra

Forecast: Fenestra was entered and withdrawn at Santa Anita on October 15 (it was a stewards’ scratch, not a vet scratch), worked two days later, and is back in the entries today for the powerful V. Cerin/K. Desormeaux team in his second career start and his first since July of 2020. The five-year-old gelding displayed good speed before weakening when facing much tougher straight maidens at Gulfstream Park in that race and returns at the bottom while showing a bullet five furlong work (5f, :59.1h) last week to have him fit and ready. He’ll also be racing with Lasix for the first time, so we’re expecting the son of Street Sense to bust out and go and hopefully wire the field at 9/2 on the morning line as a win play and rolling exotic single.

                    Use: 2-Crew Dragon; 6-Team Merchants; 7-Coulthard; 9-Man Friday

Forecast: Crew Dragon was a clever winner over this course and distance three runs back and a repeat of that effort today should be good enough to take this restricted stakes for 3-year-olds over a mile on grass. The son of Exaggerator earned a career top speed figure when a strong runner-up in a Hillside turf dash at Santa Anita last month, has trained well since, and picks up L. Saez. Coulthard stretches out for the first time, attracts J. Rosario, and projects to be forwardly placed throughout and have every chance. He was fourth in the same race Crew Dragon exits and with only slight improvement today the P. D’Amato-trained colt should be right there. Team Merchants adds blinkers for the first time and has a chance to wire the field if he’s permitted to show his natural speed. Rating tactics in his last pair failed to produce the desired results but with aggressive handling today the son of Nyquist has a chance to get loose on the lead and take this field a very long way. Worth tossing in as well is the steadily improving Man Friday, a winner of his last pair against lesser competition but with rising speed figures and a strong closing kick that will be dangerous if the race flow plays in his favor.

                    Notable Workouts:
Team Merchants (October 16, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.1h TT). Grade: B+
Broke off several lengths behind Happy Jack (5f, 1:01h TT) and motored on by approaching the finish while well in hand throughout, splits of :24.2, :36.3 and 1:00 flat on our watches, quite sharp as usual. No blinkers in this drill but is scheduled to add them in his next start. Always impressive in the a.m., still hasn’t put it together in the p.m.

Coulthard (October 23, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00h TT). Grade: B+
Led early in training track team drill with Hollywoodhellraisr (same time) and Going Global (5f, :59.2h TT, closed big gap, never asked, sharp+) and maintained his advantage to the wire without being asked in sharp style for P. D’Amato, final half mile in :11.4, :23.4 and :47.2, plenty left late. Acts like he’ll handle a distance of ground if given the chance. Had a right to need his last start but should be sharper and fitter next time.

                    Single: 8-Big Stretch

Forecast: The finale is at first glance a treacherous affair for restricted (nw-2) $16,000 claiming fillies and mares. Big ticket players may choose to buy the race, but we’ll take a stand and ty to be right using Big Stretch as a single. It’s not that she’s any great shakes, but the P. D’Amato-trained filly has been out of her element chasing much better foes going long on the lawn. Her one-turn dirt outings aren’t half bad, so at this extended sprint trip facing much softer company the daughter of Mr. Big has a reasonable chance to wear down the leaders. At 7/2 on the morning line, we’ll make her a win play and rolling exotic single.

                      Delta Downs - Race #3
                      Picks Notes
#4 Summer Is Hot They might be trying to get a race into her before Fair Grounds, but her form fits well enough in a pretty soft spot. She's probably quick enough to keep in touch in the early going, and she's tough here if she's ready with a top rider up.
#3 Twn Ms Midship She showed a bit of forward ability on a good track in the debut at Louisiana Downs before getting DQ'ed, but those races don't always transfer well when these types come to Delta. Maybe.
#2 In for a Penny She ran well when getting a race in over the track here late last month, and she earned the rise back into special weight company off that good run when dipping in last out.
Race Summary Summer Is Hot can be tough if she's ready to roll off the bench, as there isn't a ton in here, and she can probably handle these from close range.

                      Delta Downs - Race #8
                      Picks Notes
#7 Grand Prize Her form is a bit spotty, but she has been in with some Minnesota-bred stakes groups in some of those tries, and she isn't far removed from the types of runs that would make her interesting here.
#3 Hypernova She turns back for this one after the string of route tries in the Midwest, and she has a right to be tough at what figures to be a short price. The one to beat, but she doesn't have to win this.
#1 Schiff's Corner She's fast enough to be right up on the splits today while stretching out around two turns, and she's an interesting player here if she can build on that last try.
Race Summary Grand Prize might be the right one to beat the chalk, as she's run well at sprint and short two-turn trips in the past, so this local run might be right up her alley.

                      Delta Downs - Race #9
                      Picks Notes
#5 Tourrista She might be a slight reach here, but she can get the right kind of setup with a handful of competitive, forward players lined up. Thinking some of the pace is going to come back, and she might be sitting in a perfect spot in midpack to take advantage.
#2 World of Wonder She couldn't carry her sprint speed on the turf last time out after opening up a big lead early on, and she'll try another sixteenth while moving back to the main track. I think she's a high-upside filly in this spot, but I worry she's overbet. Interesting to watch either way.
#4 Blazing Charm She has been a pretty consistent type since leaving California, and she's worth a look here after finishing very well in her local debut over a course not every horse handles.
Race Summary Tourrista is interesting at anything approaching the 10/1 ML price, as she might get a perfect trip while settled in behind a few pace players, and a couple of the logical players might get overbet.

                        Picks Notes
#6 LIVINGINTHEDREAM Ended bout with seconditis, likely repeater in same spot.
#2 QUEEN KENDALL Switches drivers again, could rally for minor share at a price.
#8 LITTLE SANDY TOES Caught 3-to-5 fave in win at Pocono two back, draws outside.
Race Summary Livinginthedream went down fighting against an odds-on, repeat winner two starts back, then snapped a string of runner-up finishes with a front-end score against many of the same rivals she meets today. No reason to think she won't live up to favoritism in this spot. Bet on her to win and place.

                        Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #3
                        Picks Notes
#2 GROSSETO AS Pinned inside until stretch, closed with good energy, gets class relief.
#3 DOODLE HANOVER Changed tactics, gave way to repeat winner, finished third.
#6 SCIROCCO BIG JOHN Needs some pace flow, Miller's choice on a double call.
Race Summary Grosetto As settled in third behind the 3-to-5 favorite, was trapped by the outer flow through the final turn, then finished with plenty of trot on the rail. He drops from the nw/4 to nw/3 condition and should provee tough with a clean trip. Play 2-3 and 2-6 exactas.

                        Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #8
                        Picks Notes
#6 SAULSBROOK KAISEN Rideau invader worth a long look at a big price.
#8 JUSTA BANDIT Rallied first-over for pair of seconds, then controlled pace in win.
#3 MACHED UP Seeks third win in a row and eighth this year.
Race Summary Saulsbrook Kaisen is a live longshot off the claim by a 27-percent barn. He set a rapid pace before tiring in the stretch last out at 5/8-mile Rideau Carleton. He backed off an early duel two back and lacked running room throughout behind the odds-on winner who, incidentally, was trained by Gagnon. Play a 3-6-8 exacta box.

#8 Justplainjane Moved off to an easy maiden win last out and lands in a good spot for her N2L attempt; took her 10 tries for the maiden win, but she's been competitive, and a repeat of her latest will make her tough.
#3 Satin Finish Showed speed and faltered in better races, and this group could have a difficult time catching her.
#1 Hushed Has speed and the rail and can be in the mix from the start; comes off a decent second and fits here.
Race Summary Justplainjane was dominant last out and has been headed in the right direction in her career; continued improvement can give her a repeat victory.

#6 Salt Creek Kid Had the worst of everything and still was up in time for a maiden win at first asking; broke poorly, raced wide and zig-zagged all over the place, but was still good enough to be along in time, making up nearly five lengths in the final furlong.
#7 Elusive War Was an easy winner last out and will be very trouble on the front end; has enough speed that he's a real threat to end it early, for all intents and purposes.
#9 Wranglered Will try his best to keep up with the pacesetter and usually has enough left to get a piece of it.
Race Summary Salt Creek Kid was impressive despite a horrible trip and he'll get plenty of help from the pacesetters in this one.

                          Remington Park - Race #7
                          Picks Notes
#6 Aero Street Was along for third in a stronger-than-usual $5,000 claiming race and has enough late energy to get past these.
#1 Love My Boss Was a closing fourth in his first over this strip and probably needed the start; legit threat.
#3 Major Brown Pressed the pace and failed last out; can hang on for a piece of the exotics.
Race Summary Aero Street comes out of a very good race in which he was third; has been with much better than these and should be able to collect the victory.
