    Stronach 5

    STRONACH 5 ANALYSIS
    Friday, December 17, 2021

The popular Stronach 5 wager returns this Friday, Dec. 17, just in time to provide some holiday cheer to those who can solve the five-race puzzle. The $1 wager features a low, 12-percent takeout and, this week, encompasses three races at Laurel Park and two at Gulfstream Park. Last month featured a $99,519 payout November 12 and an average $3,890 payout the remaining three weeks. Here's a look at this week's lineup, with an update to follow after scratch time Friday:

LEG A (Laurel Park, 7th race, 3:18 EST): MISS FOXANN cruised up 4-wide on the backstretch, dueled alongside the MSW-dropping winner until mid-stetch and settled for second best as the top pair separated from the crowded field. ALWAYS MIA is by a 12-percent, first-out sire, her dam was 10-for-27, and her trainer wins with 21-percent of his 2-year-olds in their first start on dirt. ISABELLA'S GLORY advanced steadily on the rail at one mile, appeared headed to victory in mid-stretch but got caught be the deepest closer in a 3-horse blanket finish.
LEG B (Gulfstream Park, 7th race, 3:25 EST): ILKNUR broke her maiden off a longer layoff than this in August, ran third to Mizzen (6/2-2-0, $43k) at this level and gets ample pace flow to spring an upset. IDEAL BREEZE did just that for her new barn, covering 4F on a muddy track in :46, the fastest of 69 workouts that day. She can make amends as the beaten favorite in a 5-1/2F sprint.
LEG C (Laurel Park race 8, 3:55 EST): RUANAWAY MONET is proven at this distance. She ran second off a year layoff and third to recent allowance winner Unshakable before romping to her first victory. She should sit a good stalking trip and is a must use on the ticket. AWARD WANTED stalked loose leader MIT MAZEL to the far turn, took command while in hand and held safe for a 3-length victory.
LEG D (Laurel Park, 9th race, 4:27 EST): TORCH CARRIER rallied from the clouds to win first-out on the turf, then ran second in a 6F turf-to-dirt sprint, finishing between eventual three-peater Long Distance Love (3-8, $58k) and Capstone Girl, who rallied 7-wide to win next out. WINDRUSH KARMA angled 3-wide off the dueling leaders at the top of the stretch, then was squeezed out of contention in mid-stretch when she appeared to be tiring. She looms an upset possibility at 7F in her second start off the claim and with blinkers on.
LEG E (Gulfstream Park, 9th race, 4:32 EST): Going 5-deep in a wide-open final leg of the Stronach 5. DAY'S HUMOR repelled a bid by the 3-to-5 favorite to win at 5F in her first start locally. CHARLOTTE THE BRIT broke last, swung 5-wide for the stretch run and got up for second. RED WIND won going away in her first try at the distance and takes a confident class hike. SMOOTH PEBBLE was second in a 12-horse turf allowance when last seen three months ago. CAFFEINE RUSH finished first or second in 8 of 12 starts on the main track.

    Stronach 5 Ticket
    Leg A: 4, 7, 8
    Leg B: 3, 6
    Leg C: 2, 5
    Leg D: 2, 10
    Leg E: 2, 5, 6, 7, 9

    Cost for a $1 ticket: $120

What You Need to Know - December 17, 2021

      December 17, 2021

Jeff Siegel’s “What Your Need to Know”
      December 17, 2021

      OAKLAWN PARK:

FIFTH RACE – California invader Bicameral returns to the maiden ranks after earning a piece of valuable Grade-1 black-type when finishing a distant third in the Del Mar Debutante in early September. Her debut effort in July – a solid runner-up performance that produced a good speed figure – also, if repeated, would beat this field, so we’ll consider her morning line of 2-1 to be something of an overlay in this six runner maiden event for juvenile fillies. Armed with the classic two-sprints-and-a-stretch out angle, the daughter of Constitution adds blinkers, shows two solid works over the track, and picks up aggressive rider R. Santana, Jr. to ensure that she’ll be allowed show her natural early speed. She’s projected to be on the lead or in an ideal pace-stalking position outside and then have every chance from there.

      *

      OAKLAWN PARK:

SIXTH RACE – Improving with each outing, In Dreams appears set for another significant forward move in this allowance optional claiming sprint for 2-year-olds. Most recently, the son of Frosted toyed with an expensive maiden claiming field at Churchill Downs while earning a stakes-quality speed figure that was more impressive than the six and one-half furlong margin of victory appears on paper. The Brad Cox-trained colt adds Lasix today, retains “win rider” Florent Geroux, and looks very much like the controlling speed right back. He’ll have to deal with the logical top pick and recent maiden special weight winner Chasing Time from his outside, but we’ll gamble that he’ll be up to the task.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Charles Town - Race #7
        Picks Notes
#5 Secret Castle She was a good fit at this level two starts back, and she might be finishing with a rush while cutting back around one turn for this. Capable from off the pace tonight, and something like the 4/1 ML price would feel fair.
#6 Charm Weaver She'll step up into this starter spot, but she's doing so in really good fashion after a string of good races including a couple wins in a row. She is kind of the 'now' horse, but I wonder how long she'll hold this career-best form.
#10 Country Magic She looks like she can be competitive here after a trio of really nice races since switching barns. She's probably in the mix here if she's just able to hold that current form, but the trip could get tricky from the high draw.
Race Summary Secret Castle has run okay at these types of shorter trips in the past, and she seems likely enough to rebound while turning back around one bend. Think she's the right one in a race where some other logical players have at least a couple questions to answer.

        Charles Town - Race #8
        Picks Notes
#4 Martin Man He has really held some decent form while trying better company in some of those recent starts, and his baseline recent effort seems too good for these. Holds form to score?
#9 Jammin Still He rises off a couple of really nice efforts since joining the local ranks, but he is certainly going to be tested for quality with a couple of the main players in here. Wouldn't count him out.
#6 Northern Ridge Can give him a couple of excuses along the way in some recent starts, and he has some back form that would be competitive if he's sitting on a bounce-back effort tonight. He'll be a price with a chance for a piece.
Race Summary Martin Man is probably going to get bet tonight, but he looks tough if he's just able to bring something similar to his recent tries. I'd lean on him pretty heavily tonight.

        Charles Town - Race #9
        Picks Notes
#5 Dinner At Five She steps up while protected off the claim, and she turned in an easy front-end score when racing locally for the first time. She'll need better tonight, but it feels like there's a chance she can have a go of it early and run these off their feet.
#1 Alpine Moon Tough to argue with the last few when posting wins, including one against similar open company last time out. The price gets shorter here, but it's good to know she has navigated trips from the fence in a couple of those recent tries.
#8 Kalenjin She is clearly better than she showed last time out, and and it's encouraging to see that she's still protected in starter company off that try. Price should get a bit better tonight for a filly with a high enough ceiling to land this.
Race Summary Dinner At Five offers a bit of intrigue in a race with several win candidates, as she took nicely to the local footing last time out and earned this hike up tonight.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          The Meadows - Race #9
          Picks Notes
#5 SB BODACIOUS Held up in traffic, closed with a rush when free.
#1 PARTY WHIP Left too much work to do in bid for four in a row, moves outside in.
#2 SEEYOU AT THEBEACH Classy 4-year-old starts fresh and is proven at this level.
Race Summary SB Bodacious was blocked until mid-stretch, squeezed through an opening in the 4-path and finished full of run for second. He is today's Bet Bet at the same level in his third start of a cycle. Play 5-1 and 5-2 exactas.

          Meadowlands - Race #4
          Picks Notes
#8 PIRATES ALLEY Continues to outrun his odds in 'amateur' races.
#3 DOCTOR BUTCH Close-up until stretch in slower division of split race.
#9 BRUCE'S MAGIC Beaten favorite, finished behind top one, post the concern.
Race Summary Pirates Alley got first run into a fast pace and appeared headed to victory before the post 10 winner caught up. He finished first or second at 9-1, 32-1 and 34-1 in his last four starts and should retain good betting value from post 8. Bet on him to win and place.

          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #5
          Picks Notes
#6 MAJESTIC VIRGIN Deceptively good try against better with first-time Lasix.
#3 ROCKINWITHCUSTARD Lost by a nose, head and neck in her last three starts.
#5 KICKIN COWGIRL Rallied from clouds to finish 1-2-3 here recently.
Race Summary Majestic Virgin inched closer on the final turn, lacked running room through the stretch and finished willingly in 1:51.4. She gets class relief, second-time Lasix and top billing in this spot. Play a 6-ALL exacta.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Remington Park - Race #10
            Picks Notes
#6 Casual Was runner-up in the Zia Distaff last out and moves out of sprints for this two-turn race; she was a close-up fourth in this race last year and can be in close attendance throughout. Her only off-the-board finish this year came in the G1 Ballerina, when she could not keep up with Gamine, Ce Ce and others.
#7 Marion Francis Was up in time in an allowance at Keeneland last out and she seeks her first stakes victory; has been on the board in nine of 10.
#5 Paige Anne Was fourth in the Seashell at Del Mar last out and was third behind Shedaresthedevil in the G1 Clement Hirsch, also at Del Mar.
Race Summary Casual has been taking on some of the best fillies and mares and can make amends for her latest, when she was second at 3-to-5 in the Zia Distaff. Expect more here.

            Remington Park - Race #11
            Picks Notes
#6 Park On the Nile Was a surprise 7 1-4-length winner at Churchill in her only career start, and that two-turn test gave her connections higher hopes than ever, and Kenny McPeek has been an expert at finding stakes races for such runners. Doesn't have the experience of the others, but she's clearly talented and looks like she could be up to the task.
#12 Optionality Romped by 6 1-2 lengths in the Zia Princess last out, and as a Gun Runner filly, this distance should be right in her wheel house.
#9 Golden Sights Beat maiden winners in a Keeneland sprint last out and can be a forward factor; on the board in three of four.
Race Summary Park On the Nile was a 21-1 surprise last time but won't be that tonight, as he only start produced results some impressive that a stakes spot is appropriate for her second start.

            Remington Park - Race #12
            Picks Notes
#5 Classic Moment Was impressive in a fast maiden win at Churchill last out and can be in the hunt throughout this one; Classic Empire filly suited for the two turns.
#2 Make It Big His two wins in as many starts should not be discounted simply because he beat Florida-breds; was highly impressive and should be a strong factor. Both races were at seven furlongs, and he should be able to tackle the two turns.
#3 Bye Bye Bobby Was an $870K purchase and won the Zia Juvenile in his only start; stretching out should not be a problem.
Race Summary Classic Moment makes his first two-turn attempt in a tough spot, but he bred to for class and distance and fits well with these.

The $70,000 Jim Thorpe is a mile on the dirt on Friday evening. Look out for Tap the Dot and Number One Dude should be in big contention to land this top prize.

Tap the Dot is 3 for 8 and looking for a win today for the hat-trick. He’s coming off back-to-back wins on November 23 and December 11 at Remington.

In the first of two wins, Tap the Dot beat Okie Union by 2 ¼ lengths for a $41,650 purse, and then followed up with a 3 length win in a $16,000 assignment.

This is going to be tougher on Tap the Dot, with Number One Dude going to provide tough resistance. Number One Dude is 5 for 9 and has stakes experience.

He has finished 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd in his last four outings, with a 5 ¼ length win in the $55,000 Will Rogers Stakes on May 25. Two attempts later, he won the $50,000 Oklahoma Stallion Series by 7 lengths in a blowout.

Number One Dude failed to get it done on October 15 in the $175,000 Oklahoma Classics Cup Stakes, but still ran well placing 2nd behind Absaroka by 4 ¼ lengths.

This looks like a race for Number One Dude to win.

              (2) Green Eyed Belle

              (5) Gotta See Red
              +500 (5/1)
              (6) Run Slewpy Run
              +300 (3/1)

              Post Time: 8:42 p.m. CST
              Distance: 1 Mile
              Purse:$70,000

The $70,000 Useeit Stakes is another 70k event on the dirt over a mile. Expect to see Run Slewpy Run and Sunday Flashback have a presence in this one.

Run Slewpy Run is 4 for 10 in her career, and has finished 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 2nd in five attempts.

She was a back-to-back stakes winner on September 24 and October 15 in the $70,000 Bob Barry Memorial Stakes and $130,000 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf Stakes.

In her most recent win, Run Slewpy Run beat Alternative Slew by 3 lengths for a big $130,000 score. She failed to get the hat-trick on November 23, but still showed up well.

Run Slewpy Run placed 2nd behind Sunday Flashback by a half length for a $49,000 purse on November 23, so that was disappointing.

Sunday Flashback is 4 for 5 and a winner in four in a row. After winning her run in the $130,000 Oklahoma Classics Distaff by a head, she turned her attention to beating Run Slewpy Run.

This looks like another good spot for Sunday Flashback to get a win over Run Slewpy Run.
              The Bet

              Distance:1 Mile
              Purse:$400,000

The $400,000 Remington Springboard Mile covers a mile on the dirt. Classic Moment and Make It Big should be tough in this feature event.

Classic Moment has finished 3rd, 1st in his career and should have a chance versus this field. He opened showing 3rd on October 9 in a $84,000 assignment.

Then Classic Moment came back to do better on November 5. Classic Moment defeated Cyberknife by a half-length for a $120,000 purse.

That was an impressive go from Classic Moment and earns a spot in this $400,000 event. Make It Back should be a contender to win as well.

Make It Big is a two-time winner in two attempts. He opened his career with a 8 ½ length blowout for a $45,000 purse, and then saw a stakes race thereafter.

Make It Big beat Lightening Larry by 2 ¼ lengths in the $60,000 Ocala Stud Juvenile Sprint Stakes on October 30. He needs something tougher and looks ready after a 5-furlong workout on December 12.

In that workout, Make It Big was clocked at 59.50 seconds to suggest that he’s prepared for this challenge on Friday. I’m backing Make It Big in the Springboard Mile.
              The Bet
              (2) MAKE IT BIG

                Purse:$26,000

Race 2 is a mile on the dirt for a $26,000 purse. Kalalou and Persisto should be tough to beat in this one.

Kalalou will have an edge from the inside rail out of the gate this afternoon. She is 4 for 19 in her career, finishing 2nd, 1st, 3rd, 6th in her last four attempts.

The mare defeated Hush Y’all by 6 lengths for a $28,000 purse on March 31 in nice form. She came back on April 11, showing 3rd for a $30,000 prize.

Kalalou fell off at Churchill Downs on May 27. She finished 6th in a $37,300 assignment and will receive a grade drop today.

Persisto has finished 4th, 1st, 4th in her last three outings. It was a winning run for the filly on September 18.

That was an impressive 1 length win over Decoupage in a $32,000 assignment. However, Persisto didn’t follow up on October 22 and went 4th for a $49,000 purse.

Back down in class, this time all the way down to $26,000, Persisto looks like the toughest runner in this event.

                Purse:$84,000

Race 5 covers 1 1/16 miles on the dirt for a $84,000 purse. Run the Tap and Bicameral should be top contenders to go in.

Run the Tap is winless in one attempt on November 20. She came up short in 4th for a $120,000 purse on November 20 at Churchill Downs.

It was nevertheless a decent debut for the $210,000 filly. Down right away to the $84,000 level, look at Run the Tap to put a big run together versus this field.

Bicameral has finished 2nd, 3rd in two career outings. She opened placing 2nd behind Dance to the Music by 4 ¾ lengths for a $70,000 purse on July 24.

Following that promising attempt, Bicameral went graded racing at Del Mar on September 5. Bicameral showed 3rd in the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (Gr. 1) for an impressive impact.

In a more winnable race and continued improvement possible, expect Bicameral to do damage on Friday afternoon.

Race 6 is a $100,000 event over 6 furlongs on the dirt. In Dreams and Chasing Time should be in good standing for a win.

Chasing Time finished 4th, 2nd, 1st in three races in his career. He has steadily shown improvement and could be good for another win today.

In his latest attempt, Chasing Time beat Peaceful Waters by 1 ¾ lengths for a $120,000 purse. Impressive form after placing 2nd behind Spartan Army by ¾ lengths in the same grade.

In Dreams has finished 6th, 2nd, 1st in three outings. Like Chasing Time, In Dreams continues to improve. In his last outing, he defeated Love On the Rocks by 6 ½ lengths on November 24 for a $63,000 prize.

Prior to that outing, In Dreams placed 2nd behind Yono by 1 length in a $52,000 purse. Both of these runners are in good form going into Friday, but I point towards Chasting Time to get to the winner’s circle. He has experience in much tougher races than this on Friday.

                    # 3 DETERMINED TRUTH 3/1

                    # 2 BAZINGA C 7/2

I think about KILIMANJARA here. Has run quite well when racing a dirt sprint race. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Hernandez ought to have this filly in excellent position to win the affair. Boasts sound speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of horses in this race. DETERMINED TRUTH - Could best this group of animals here, showing strong figures of late. Is a solid contender - given the 76 speed figure from her most recent race. BAZINGA C - This racer has a very good winning percentage in dirt sprints. One of the strongest win percentages between this jockey and trainer make this filly dangerous.

                      #2 DAY'S HUMOR (ML=4/1)

CAFFEINE RUSH - When Reyes and Dobles partner up on horses the return on investment has been great at +44. This filly likes to be near the lead. Today's event is a shorter distance and should help her chances of winning. Last ran at Gulfstream Park and finished fifth. Reviewing her handicapping information, I see she was close at the finish line, within 5 of the winner. CHARLOTTE THE BRIT - This mare's last rating notched on November 13th is tops in last race speed ratings. YELLEN - You have to really like that latest race speed figure, 80, which is the top latest race speed figure of this group. DAY'S HUMOR - Gonzalez comes to ride again after getting to know the filly in the last contest. This jock/conditioner duo has been producing a high win pct, right around 33. This filly is in nice form, having run a good race on Dec 3rd, finishing first.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SMOOTH PEBBLE (ML=3/1),

SMOOTH PEBBLE - Hard to recommend any horse with lessening speed figures of 88/82/73. This filly hasn't had any recent accomplishments in short distance contests. Difficult to play her in this contest. When looking at today's class rating, she will have to record a much better speed fig than last time out to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

                      STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #5 CAFFEINE RUSH to win if we can get at least 9/2 odds

HARD TO PARK is my choice. Has to be considered in this race if only for the very good speed figure put up in the last race. The average class rating alone makes this horse a key contender. Ought to be given a chance here on the basis of the figs in the speed section alone. STUD PUPPY - He has posted strong numbers under today's conditions and should fare well versus this field.

                                1* on Miami Heat -7
The Key: The Miami Heat are a deep team that can afford to be without some players. They have proven that by going 3-1 SU & 3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall despite being underdogs in all 4 games. They pulled outright upsets over 3 of the better teams in the NBA in the Bucks, Bulls and 76ers. The Orlando Magic cannot afford to be without players because they aren't deep and aren't very talented as it is. They are without 4 players and have another 4 questionable tonight, including Cole Anthony, Mo Bamba and Gary Harris. The Magic are 1-13 SU in their last 14 games overall and have been blown out on the regular. Nine of their last 12 losses have come by 7 points or more. Take Miami.
