#1 Wish For Peace	Could see this guy getting a decent trip from behind a fair pace, as he's bred to handle the move around two turns and may be able to save some ground inside and wait for a place to run into the far turn.
#6 Summer Ash	He proved a much better fit with the local company when stepping up to this level last time out and turning in a decent effort when a non-threatening second. He might get the right kind of spying trip, but probably at an underlaid price.
#2 Major Thomas	He didn't stay well late in the route debut last time out, but he was close to decent splits that day and might appreciate a bit more leisurely pace this time around.
Race Summary	Wish For Peace looks like he might be able to find a good spot tucked in just behind the pace while heading around two turns for the first time, and he might offer a playable enough price with a couple other logical players signed on.

Penn National - Race #6

#9 Moonsafe	She'll rise off the claim into this protected allowance spot, and she has back form that was very competitive at this level. She has some ability to settle and finish, and that should serve her well in this one if the pace starts to come back.
#7 Majestic Greeley	She'll be in the mix from the start here, and she is getting up in class off a really good runner-up performance in her first try with winners. She has shown some ability to battle early and fight late, so maybe she is one of the ones who sticks around late.
#3 After the Party	She chased and faded in that allowance try last out, and so far she has looked a bit like she needs the lead for her best stuff, having given way pretty tamely in both starts when she wasn't able to sustain the lead. Might get softened up early.
Race Summary	There are a few lined up in here who may not be flexible enough to avoid starting a pace battle, and that might let things come apart a bit late. Moonsafe goes for new connections after a score with easier, and the race shape might give her a chance to rally past these at a decent price.

Penn National - Race #9

#8 Voodoo Cat	He has landed six underneath shares from 10 starts, and he doesn't really have many excuses left. That said, he has some finishing ability in a race where nearly all of them want to stop hard in the lane, and the slight cutback might allow him to show a bit more sustained run late.
#1 E T's Super Star	He'll drop and try the locals for the first time, and that alone makes him dangerous with a little bit of tactical pace from the fence. His best stuff would probably do the trick, but I worry he'll get a bit overbet in this spot.
#10 Tasty's Bullseye	His last was a bit of an improvement when trying this trip for the first time at this level, and it's not too tough to see him chasing along from the outside and landing a piece by staying on at one, grinding pace late.
Race Summary	Voodoo Cat goes in his 11th lifetime start, but he catches a group of chasing types who want to fade, and his ability to pass some horses late might make him the right one here.

Race Summary	Silent Splendor had his way against many of the same rivals recently, winning four in a row by a combined 9 lengths. He remains eligible for this condition by $830 in earnings. He won't be much price so let's make a 6-2 straight exacta today's Best Bet.

#4 JAMMIN JACK	Couldn't sustain bid alongside the fave, good value play on class rise.

Race Summary	My Indy hasn't lost on the grass here and can be effective from wherever her jockey chooses.

Monday Myths: When Do We Find Clarity in the 3-Year-Old Picture?

Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

Assumption:

The 3-year-old stakes picture takes some time to gain focus through the winter and spring.

Background:

With the turn of the calendar, many will turn their attention to the Triple Crown trail. It’s the most identified ‘season’ in horse racing and culminates in May and June. The months of January through April are when the class of each year’s class comes to the top. But do those stakes races in the ‘regular season’ get easier or harder to handicap as the 3-year-old crop defines itself?

Data Points:

I dialed up the Betmix database for all 3-year-old graded stakes races for the colts/geldings over the last 8 years, going back to 2013. I wanted to see what the average price winner was in those races by month, January-February-March-April, as well as the percentage of winning favorites.

The average 3-year-old graded stakes winner in January is 1.90-1 odds.
Favorites in 3-year-old graded stakes races win 59% in January.

The average 3-year-old graded stakes winner in February is 5.28-1 odds.
Favorites in 3-year-old graded stakes races win 33% in February.

The average 3-year-old graded stakes winner in March is 4.98-1 odds.
Favorites in 3-year-old graded stakes races win 37% in March.

The average 3-year-old graded stakes winner in April is 4.62-1 odds.
Favorites in 3-year-old graded stakes races win 32% in April.

Overall Findings:

January had the lowest-priced returns as well as the highest rate of winning favorites in the survey. The average winner nearly 2.72 to 3.38 odds points lower than any other month. The percentage of winning favorites was a whopping 22-27 percentage points lower than the other months. The February through April results did decrease in terms of average win payoff as the prep season unfolded.

Bottom line:

There’s some truth to the trail coming together from February to April, but the initial month of the year has been absolutely locked in on shorter prices while some of the bigger horses remain on the sidelines for their sophomore returns.
