Best Horse Racing Bets for Tuesday, December 28, 2021
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I found some good end-of-the-year stakes races for my Tuesday picks—Mahoning Valley Race Course, Parx Racing, and Turf Paradise.

The morning-line and I agreed on more than the usual number of races, and while I didn’t find any sleepers for Tuesday, I did find a third-favored (at 5/1) horse in the Kris Kringle Stakes at Parx.

Don’t forget that you can check out the starting gates for all the races at one of our best horseracing wagering sites.

    Good luck!
My Tuesday Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

We’ll start with race two, a 1-1/4 miles starter allowance run on the main track for three-year-olds and upward. I’m backing the 3/1 second-favored Double the Laugh, ridden by veteran jockey Sonny Leon.

This six-year-old gelding finished in the money 34 of his 53 career starts, winning 14, which gives him the winning profile in this eight-horse field. Sure, he’ll see some real pressure from the top half of the 1/1A coupled entry—Itasca—but I believe Double the Laugh will prevail.

A newcomer who’s already establishing a solid winning record for himself, Alejandro Murillo Rodriguez, trains Double the Laugh for Premier Stables Unlimited.

Race five is a six-furlong allowance run for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races. I agree with the morning line: bet on the 3/1 favorite, Aujara, with Sonny Leon in the irons.
This three-year-old filly moneyed all five of her career starts, graduating the maiden class in late October (her fourth attempt), then finishing third in an allowance race in November.

Cirilo Gorostieta trains Aujara for owner Elizabeth Rankin.

Race seven is a six-furlong allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 4/1) Cat’s Rhythm, with Brandon Tapara aboard.

While this seven-year-old mare’s overall record falls short of the morning line favorite’s, in 2021 she’s the stand-out with nine money finishes in 12 starts, four of those wins—including her two most recent.

For the record, Cat’s Rhythm finished 16 of her 37 career starts in the money, with seven wins.

Longtime racing veteran Danny R. Bird trains Cat’s Rhythm for Strike Plate LLC. Bird has put Tapara in the irons for Cat’s Rhythm’s last three stars, resulting in a third-place finish followed by two wins.
    Tuesday’s Picks for Parx Racing

Parx features a trio of stakes races on its Tuesday race-card, so let’s start with race seven—the Mrs. Claus Stakes, a $100,000 purse, seven-furlong main track run for fillies and mares three years old and upward.

My money’s on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Don’t Call Me Mary, piloted by veteran jockey Kendrick Carmouche.

This four-year-old filly moneyed eight of her 12 career starts, winning six, including the Dr. Teresa Garofalo Memorial Stakes (Black Type) her at Parx in August.

Hall of Famer Todd A. Pletcher trains Don’t Call Me Mary for The Elkstone Group, LLC (Stuart Grant).

Race eight is the Kris Kringle Stakes, a $100,000 purse, one-mile and 70 yards main track run for three-year-olds and upward. I like the third-favored (at 5/1) Rock On Luke, ridden by top jockey Paco Lopez.
This four-year-old gelding finished 14 of his 16 career starts in the money, winning five, including the M.P. Ballezzi Appreciation Mile Stakes (Black Type) in October here at Parx. He regularly posts speed figures in the triple digits.

Regina Brennan trains Rock On Luke for owner Jennifer M. Truehart.

Race nine is the Blitzen Stakes, a $100,000 purse, six-furlong main track run for three-year-olds and upward. This is a 16-horse field with a couple of also-eligibles on the card, so let’s look at our options.

If Fortheluvofbourbon starts this race, bet him and his jockey, Mychel J. Sanchez, to win. The four-year-old gelding moneyed seven of his 13 career starts, winning five, including the Banjo Picker Sprint Stakes (Black Type) in August here at Parx. Michael V. Pino trains Fortheluvofbourbon for Smart Angle LLP.

If that doesn’t happen, then bet the also-eligible favorite (at 7/2) Hollywood Jet, ridden by jockey Luis M. Ocasio. This three-year-old gelding finished in the money nine of his 16 career starts, winning five, including his last three.

Hollywood Jet is trained by owner Carlos J. Milian, who has tapped Ocasio to saddle Hollywood Jet for two of his three most recent wins.
    Tuesday Picks for Turf Paradise

We’ll begin with race two, a one-mile starter optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 7/2) Top of the Game, ridden by Enrique Garcia.

This eight-year-old gelding moneyed 25 of his 51 career starts, winning 16—and his 2021 record is even better: ten money finishes in 15 starts, six of them wins.

Miguel L. Hernandez trains Top of the Game for Stable H.M.A. Hernandez has put Garcia in the irons for Top of the Game’s last four starts.

Race seven is the Richard Hazelton Overnight Stakes, a $37,800 purse, 1-1/16 miles main track run for three-year-olds. My money is on the 3/1 morning-line favorite, Tony’s Tapit, with Sahin Civaci in the irons.
This three-year-old colt finished 13 of his 17 career starts in the money, winning nine, including the Count Lathum Handicap (Black Type) at Century Mile in August.

Thirty-year racing veteran James R. Brown trains Tony’s Tapit for owner Kirk Sutherland.

Let’s switch to the turf course for race eight, a one-mile claiming run for three-year-olds that have never won two races. I must agree with the morning line here and bet on the 5/2 favorite, Who’s Cheatin Who, ridden by Jose Luis Zunino.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed eight of his 13 career starts, winning one, which makes him most likely to succeed in this 12-horse field.

Longtime racing veteran Curt Ferguson trains Who’s Cheatin Who for Stable H.M.A.

Today's Horse Racing Tips: Tuesday December 28th
          Stephen Harris

          Today’s Racing Tips – December 28th

There are 5 race meetings in Britain and Ireland on Tuesday, with the quality very much coming from Leopardstown which stages a top class card with all the big stables represented. The Grade 1 Savills Chase at 2.20pm is sure to be a cracker, with A Plus Tard sure to be a warm order as he continues his preparation towards the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. In the UK there are two low grade jumps cards, while all-weather fans have the twilight meeting at Newcastle to get stuck into from 3.15pm.

          Leicester. 1:03 PM

Dan Skelton’s novice was in command when falling at the last at Warwick 19 days ago, and can gain compensation for that unlucky defeat at Leicester on Tuesday. He remains open to plenty of improvement after just four runs over hurdles, and the testing ground conditions are likely to suit him ideally

Phillip Hobbs unexposed maiden caught the eye at Exeter on his chasing debut, dropped out initially and not quite seeing things out from two out behind Eurowork. The drop back in trip to a bare two miles should suit ideally, and a more positive ride from Tom O’Brien can see him snap a frustrating spell and get off the mark under Rules at the eighth attempt.

Monday Myths: Can Prat & Rispoli Be Beaten on Turf in SoCal?

            December 27, 2021 | By Jeremy Plonk

Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

            Assumption:

You can’t beat Flavien Prat and Umberto Rispoli in Southern California turf races.

            Background:

The dominant turf-riding duo of Flavien Prat and Umberto Rispoli are like magnets when you handicap a Southern California grass race. Often it’s the first place the public looks in the past performances.

            Data Points:

I studied every turf race in Southern California in 2020 and 2021, more than a thousand strong at Santa Anita and Del Mar.

            //

Prat and Rispoli won 386 of the 1095 turf races offered (35.2%).

            //

Prat and Rispoli rode 542 of the 1095 favorites in turf races offered (49.5%).

            //

Prat had a 24.8% win rate and $0.83 ROI in turf mounts.

            //

Rispoli had a 22.2% win rate and $1.04 ROI in turf mounts.

            //

Only JJ Hernandez (16.6%) and Joel Rosario (16.1%) have won more than 15% on turf with 40+ mounts.

            //

Prat and Rispoli won 72 of the 186 turf stakes races offered (38.7%).

            //

Prat and Rispoli rode 92 of the 186 favorites in turf races offered (49.4%).

            Overall Findings:

Prat and Rispoli rode a significantly higher percentage of favorites, nearly 50%, than they did winners, just over 35%, on the turf. The public certainly follows their runners in the spirit of the study’s original premise. Rispoli was the more profitable follow, in fact showing a flat-bet 4% profit over the past 2 years. All other jockeys in the colony win at a combined 7.7% rate on turf with only 2 jockeys hitting 15% or more with 40+ mounts.

            Bottom line:

It’s a bit of hyperbole to say you can’t beat Prat and Rispoli on turf. In fact, nearly 2 in 3 times, they do get beat. But their comparative dominance over the other individuals in the colony is unmistakable and the public honing in on just about half the favorites on turf from one of these two riders is an indication that the feeling is pretty ingrained. You can go into Betmix and run your own queries for a deeper dive into this theory and any that you can create. For instance, see which class levels on turf and distances the duo has the most likelihood for victory, or to be upset.

NEWMARKET - 3.15 MASTER SERGEANT (nap); 4.50 Queen Aminatu (nb).

NORTHERNER - 3.50 Copper Mountain (nb)

                LEOPARDSTOWN

                1.10 - ARDHILL

GOODFELLOW ANALYSIS: The chances of ARDHILL rely on a non runner given he is first reserve, but well handicapped and well-supported horses have a habit of sneaking into this type of race and, if he has bounced out of his Ascot outing in the same form, the six-year-old could take some beating.

The blinkers worked the oracle 10 days ago and if they have a similar result second time round he could be tough to beat. Future Regem is going from strength to strength and should appreciate the trip while Maze Runner won over c&d in February and should strip fitter for his first run back.

                1.45 - Klassical Dream

GOODFELLOW ANALYSIS: Klassical Dream has won twice following long absences so, with his yard in very good form, he shouldn’t lack for fitness of match sharpness.

He is 2-3 at this venue and landed a sizeable gamble on his first try at 3m at the Punchestown festival in the spring so there should be more to come. Last year’s winner Flooring Porter would arguably have won on his Navan comeback but for falling two out and looks a threat, while Sire Du Berlais, runner-up to Flooring Porter in the Stayers’ Hurdle, is another to consider returning to 3m.

                2.20 - A PLUS TARD

                2.55 - GALOPIN DES CHAMPS

GOODFELLOW ANALYSIS: Galopin des Champs looked like he would make a formidable novice chaser when winning over hurdles at Cheltenham and Punchestown last spring and he boasts the opportunity to vindicate that view on his chasing debut here.

Not that this will be an easy introduction as Fury Road and Blue Sari set a decent standard to exceed, but the Mullins-trained five-year-old boasts the potential to be very smart at his new discipline. The first-time cheekpieces could sharpen up Fury Road who chased home Beacon Edge in a Fairyhouse Grade One last time.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

                    December 28, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia

Tonight, Northfield Park has 14 races set to roll and the $1.00 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                    Race 11

2-Blue Spanx (5/2)-Raced well off a rough trip from the 2nd tier and finished the mile nicely. Kash should be able to provide a smoother trip and be in the hunt at the wire.
3-Pound Sign (3-1)-Came out of the same race as the one above and had to deal with post 8. Form has been good, has cashed checks versus tough company and it's best to respect chances for a picture.
6-Caviart Cooper (8-1)-Will look for a price banking on Davis Jr providing a sharp steer and being in striking range around the last turn. Has tactical speed and could be overlooked at the windows.

                    Race 12

2-Oneisalonelynumber (3-1)-It looks like the 2 program chalks are a cut above the rest of the field. This veteran has a post edge and can race near the top of the stack. Those factors could be the difference.
9-Vintage Grand (5/2)-Best to not overlook but this post draw makes things more difficult. Wrenn will need to work some magic because there isn't much gate speed inside. Has hit the board in 34 of 64 Nfld starts and has taken 14 pictures. It wouldn't be shock if this 7-year-old is in the hunt at the wire.

                    Race 13

4-Dancin Dragon (1/1)-Got on the engine and almost lasted at the level above this one in the 1st local start. Merriman will steer again and this will be the 2nd start in the Oliverio barn. Was off almost 3 weeks before the last race, and comes right back in sequence tonight. Should make the most of the class relief.

                    Race 14

3-A J Morelli (3-1)-Hasn't made a trip to the winner's circle since early October and now drops into a soft spot. Could blast out versus this kind to get on the engine and may not look back.
5-Caviart Val (3-1)-Here is another who finds a spot to shine. Beat this kind here for its last win on 11-15 and usually battles at the Meadows. Merriman could look to drop into the pocket behind the one above. Will use these 2 and look to beat the 9/5 program favorite #1.

                    $1.00 Late Pick 4

                    2,3,6/2,9/4/3,5
                    Total Bet=$12

                      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                      Penn National - Race #1
                      Picks Notes
#7 Tropicaldepression She'll drop to try this level for the first time after showing a little bit of life in that last one when cutting back around one turn. Not much in here by way of form on paper, so it's probably this filly or one of the firsters.
#4 Noble City Low expectations for this one as she debuts for $7,500, but she has some sprint pedigree on both sides that might serve her well in a short race with cheap company. Won't have to be a star.
#2 Smoke and Mirrors She debuts for a capable team in a spot that won't require a superb effort at first asking to have a chance to score with these. Would not be a surprise.
Race Summary Not really enthused with any of the firsters, but there isn't much here by way of form on paper, so Tropicaldepression gets the edge as the best of those who have raced. This easier level might be soft enough to get her home.

                      Penn National - Race #5
                      Picks Notes
#4 Plane Drunk She showed little when chasing from last throughout with a better group at Parx last time out, but that was also her first start with blinkers, and she'll shed the hood after the dull try. She is a better fit with this kind of company, and she might offer a playable price.
#5 Beach Banker She was no match for an easy winner when trying NY-bred stakes company when last seen this summer, and she appears to be working forwardly enough for this comeback effort. Dangerous here in a two-deep race for me.
#1 Flattering Ruby Her best form makes her a handful, but she will take any of the heat from other pace players from this rail draw, and she could be vulnerable late with these.
Race Summary Plane Drunk and Beach Banker both offer some appeal with upside while returning to face this kind of company with the locals, and they may be second and third choice on the board with Flattering Ruby likely in the mix, too.

                      Penn National - Race #6
                      Picks Notes
#4 Imaginthekiss She brings a forward series of works with her to this debut try, and this is not going to go down as the deepest race for the local level. Big chance on debut.
#3 Last Offense Blinkers go on for this first dirt try after a couple of modest kinds of efforts at Woodbine to open her career. This softer spot gives her a real claim on this.
#1 Salagadoola She passed some tiring ones late in the debut try, and she's probably going to be better when they start adding a bit more ground. That said, she can play for a piece with these if she can move forward off the debut try.
Race Summary Imaginthekiss debuts in a spot where the likely chalk has a couple questions to answer while trying the local footing for the first time for a new team.

                        Picks Notes
#1 PETRO HALL Unwound too late, gets class relief, moves outside in.
#3 AUNT BEE Went around stalled cover on the turn, flattened out in lane.
#6 CASEY T Responded to front-end tactics with Palone, steps up.
Race Summary Petro Hall, unhurried until the stretch in a race that lined up single file most of the way, closed with a 5-wide rush, setting her up as today's Best Bet on the class drop from the rail. Bet on her to win and place.

                        Dover Downs - Race #2
                        Picks Notes
#1 GITTIN ALL SEXY Longshot stab drops, exits fast heat, starts from rail.
#4 COMMAND THE FIRE Bet off troubled trip two back, chased 2-1 winner around the track.
#3 CANTAB'S MASTER Been stuck in 'third' gear of late, burning money along the way.
Race Summary Gittin All Sexy tailed off in the second half of an otherwise decent 5-year-old season, but he gets class relief, draws the rail and can factor in this field at a price. Play a 1-ALL exacta.

                        Northfield Park - Race #2
                        Picks Notes
#6 BROTHER DICK Anxious in pocket, but pocket collapsed on turn, proving costly.
#1 AIM FOR GLORY Finished in money twice at 31-1 odds in last three starts.
#3 SEATTLE HANOVER Got up for third from post 8 in faster division of split race.
Race Summary Brother Dick ducked back into the pocket after an early attempt to take the lead, only to lose all chance when shuffled on the final turn. He finished willingly and is worth a playback at and inflated price. Play 6-1 and 6-3 exactas.

                          Mahoning Valley - Race #5
                          Picks Notes
#3 Can I Go Too Turns back from a mile and has been much more effective at shorter distances; should be rolling late.
#5 Aujara Broke her maiden two backs back and then weakened in an allowance last out; speed makes her dangerous here.
#9 Deb's All Out Broke her maiden here last year and has been in a threat in most Ohio-bred allowance races; legit player.
Race Summary Can I Go Too will get a good pace in front of her and should be able to pick up the leaders late in this.

                          Mahoning Valley - Race #6
                          Picks Notes
#2 Artavia Has the speed to be a factor from the start and should be able to dig in at this level.
#3 President Elect Ran fairly close inmost races at Hawthorne and can get a good trip here.
#4 Roskilde Set the pace and was caught late last time; has been weakening late, but he's been in some good races.
Race Summary Artavia can get a good trip along the inside and can answer when challenged.

                          Mahoning Valley - Race #7
                          Picks Notes
#9 Companys Coming Has taken on some decent claiming races and lands in an allowance race that's probably not any more challenging than some of the races she's been in.
#10 Friday Comes out of better races and can get back to good form in this spot.
#11 Happy as You Go Has been in good Ohio-bred races and could be up to the task of running vs. open foes in this one.
Race Summary Companys Coming was a gate-to-wire winner last out and has the speed to be a strong factor from the start.

There is stakes racing at Parx in Philadelphia this afternoon. The Blitzen, Kris Kringle, and Mrs. Claus Stakes, all worth $100,000 are scheduled for Tuesday.

                            +500 (5/1)

                            Post Time: 12:40 p.m. MST
                            Distance: 4 ½ Furlongs
                            Purse:$13,300

The first race in the desert covers 4 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Quirky Chaos and Blame the Devil should be value on Tuesday afternoon.

Blame the Devil has finished 5th, 7th, 9th, 2nd in his previous four attempts. In his last race, Blame the Devil finished 6 ¾ lengths for $12,350.

Prior to that attempt, Blame the Devil finished 9th for $20,600 on November 22. The class drop helped and this assignment looks manageable.

Quirky Chaos is 2nd, 8th, 5th, 6th in his career. He opened well, placing 2nd behind U S Deputy by 1 ½ lengths on September 11. In his last go, Quirky Chaos was 6th for $10,500 on December 5.

For the first in his career, he’s going on Lasix and lowering the claiming tag. There appears some value at this price despite recent struggles at Golden Gate Fields.

Race 4 is an $11,900 event covering a mile on the dirt. Consider Red Mamba and Sand Walker to take Race 4 down.

Red Mamba is 2 for 11 in his career. The gelding has finished 2nd, 1st, 1st, 5th in his previous four outings.

He won back-to-back outings on August 5 and August 27. In the first win, Red Mamba defeated Funny Actor by 9 ½ lengths for $10,000.

Red Mamba followed up with a South Al Sparky by ¾ lengths in an $11,500 assignment. He dropped off in form most recently, though.

Red Mamba finished 5th in an $11,025 race. If he gets back to past form, Red Mamba will have a chance.

Sand Walker is 2 for 18 in his career and has finished 8th, 4th, 7th in his last three. He went 7th on December 9 for $13,130 after 4th on November 15 in a $13,400 race.

This should be a solid go for Sand Walker down in class. Expect Sand Walker to be the best here.

                            Purse:$23,800

Race 5 is a $23,800 event covering 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt. I’d look at Ravina Lane and Creme de La Chrome as potential winners in this spot.

Ravina Lane is winless in two attempts, going 5th, 3rd on November 10 and December 3. In his first race, Ravina Lane finished 5th for a $15,000 event.

He showed improvement on December 3 a few weeks back. The gelding showed 3rd for $60,000. That was well up and class and Ravina Lane handled it pretty well.

Creme de La Chrome made his debut on December 7 and looked strong. The colt placed 2nd behind Mongolian Memory by 5 ½ lengths in a $22,100 race.

That was a pretty decent attempt and he’s going to be open to improvement with his rookie run out of the way. The value is good with Creme de La Chrome.
