Smarty Jones Stakes | Purse $250,000 | One Mile | Three Years Old

The Road to the Derby series at Oaklawn kicks off with the Smarty Jones Stakes, followed by the Rebel Stakes on February 26 and the Arkansas Derby on April 2. This year’s Smarty Jones drew a full field of 14 newly turned three year olds, all lightly raced and almost all unproven, meaning it is likely there will be no heavy favorite and a lot of profit to be made if we are right.
Kavod (4) has more experience than any horse in the field, having run nine times. Highly regarded early in his career, Kavod finished second in the Tremont Stakes last June but then went off form as he was both overmatched (as in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes) and tried on a surface (turf) he did not care for. His connections soured on him and entered him in a 50K claiming race in November, one which he won because of the nature of his opponents and one from which he was immediately snatched up by excellent trainer Chris Hartman (22% wins in 2021 on 313 starters). Hartman kept Kavod happy and he won the Advent Stakes on December 3 at Oaklawn. That race carried a $150,000 purse and proved Kavod fit at this level. That effort also earned a strong 91 Equibase Speed Figure, just shy of the field high 95 Barber Road (10) earned winning a stakes at Churchill Downs in November and tired for the figure Cool Papa G (12) earned when second in that same race. The difference in this field is Kavod draws a much better post for this two-turn trip, as well as may be able to improve in his second start for Hartman, with jockey Arrieta riding back after getting familiar with him in the Advent Stakes last month. Experience over the Oaklawn surface, which many of these lack, will help Kavod as well and I have no concerns about his ability to run this distance as his dam has produced multiple dirt route winners.
All in Sync (2), one of three Smarty Jones entrants from the formidable Steve Asmussen barn, is a horse with a very nice future. He finished second in his debut sprinting in October then won more easily than his one and one-half length margin on paper makes it appear last time out on November 25. Now stretching out to two turns on an age-old pattern of two sprints into a route, All in Sync gets a great inside post and projects to be in front in the early stages. Under the barn’s #1 jockey in Ricardo Santana, and with a big prospect for improvement off a 90 Equibase Figure last time out which is already one of the best in the field, All in Sync has potential to successfully play “come catch me” with the field.
Home Brew (3) will likely be the betting favorite as he not only opens at 3 to 1 odds but is trained by Brad Cox, already off to an amazing start at the meeting with a record of 9-7-1 from 23 starters. Home Brew also has a win at Oaklawn, earned one month ago at this mile trip in an allowance race. That was his third career start and second off a layoff and in that race he led from start to finish, but on slow fractions. With a number of horses stretching out to two turns for the first time in the Smarty Jones I expect Home Brew will be relaxed in mid-pack in the early stages like he was in his start on November 14 when he rallied from fifth of eight to be second at the end. That effort earned a 92 figure and considering he was geared down in his win last month the 82 figure he earned is not as representative of what he’s capable of as his previous effort. As to breeding, Home Brew is another well suited to this distance and farther as he moves through the Road to the Derby series at Oaklawn, because as a son of Street Sense he’s a half-brother to both Maxfield and McKinzie. As such, Home Brew must be taken very seriously when considering our wagers involving this race.

Win bets:
Since it is likely Home Brew (3) will be the betting favorite, the value for win bets lies in the other two contenders, so win bets on both Kavod (4) and All in Sync (3) are justified at odds of 5 to 2 or more. We will use Home Brew (3) in the win position on exacta and trifecta tickets to cover the possibility of him winning.
For the exacta and trifecta we should use the other two Asmussen trainees Cairama (11) and Cool Papa G (12), as well as Dash Attack (1), Don’tcrossthedevil (9), Barber Road (10) and Ben Deisel (14).

3^rd race [Clm 12500, 6F] – (1) Dream Bigger will make a significant drop down in class which the third choice in this race used to win his last start. (4) Next Flight ran fifth after a long layoff for a $16,000 tag in his most recent start which came following a barn change from California. (5) Dark Money was a more than four length winner of his last start following a claim by Linda Rice and the aforementioned drop down. (2) Stanhope will move from turf to dirt for Rudy Rodriguez where he has had plenty of early speed. He will make a significant drop in class and maybe his speed will help with the move back to the dirt where he did once run a second.
4^th race [Alw 50000s, 6F] – (1) Enter Sandwoman broke her maiden at Aqueduct early in the year and most recently won a $50,000 N2L claimer at Churchill Downs. This NY-bred appears to be back to the Big A for the winter. (6) Violent Vixen was a five-length winner in a maiden special weight last time which gives her a class edge over most of this field. (4) Boss Cara got her maiden victory last time in her second start following a layoff and got the best speed figure of her career. (7) Thegoddessofsnakes set the pace and finished third in a similar spot to this race. That came after her maiden win.
5^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (1) Impressionist (A) ran third in her debut after getting bumped at the start, having to check, and then race wide. (7) Relate will get Lasix for the first time for the Asmussen barn and Stonestreet after finishing a length behind the top choice in her first career start. (3) Bustin Up will move from turf to dirt after running second in her initial race in a turf sprint at Aqueduct. The sire Bustin Stones is certainly known as a dirt sire. (8) Waheel was second in his debut at Finger Lakes against open company for one of the trainers that has success shipping to the City.
8^th race [Jerome, 1 mi] – (8) Hagler is a horse that has improved in all three starts in his career and that is moving into an ideal spot. He will stretch out from seven furlongs to this one-turn mile and appears to have the tactical speed to control the race right from the start. Trainer Rudy Rodriguez has always had success at the Aqueduct winter meeting. (1) Cooke Creek is the horse to beat as the only stakes winner in the field. He won his first two starts at Delaware Park including the Rocky Run. Most recently, he was second in the Nashua (G3) behind Rockefeller who shipped east for Bob Baffert. (7) Mr Jefferson is an allowance winner at Laurel that last time ran fourth in a very tough field in the Remsen (G2). His speed figures have gone up steadily in his five starts. (3) Ohtwoohthreefive made all six of his starts on the grass including a nose loss in Central Park last time at Aqueduct. His sire Union Rags was a classic winner on the dirt and is better known as a dirt sire.

9th race – (4) Biz Biz Buzz (C) dropped from 16-1 to 10-1 then set the pace in a turf stakes before faltering and finishing third. Might benefit from a slower pace in a slightly longer race. (5) Chanceux was a sharp winner in his turf debut and should be the main rival. (6) No Nay Franklin is a maiden but missed by a neck in his lone turf race and merits consideration. (8) Grand Sonata rallied belatedly last time and deserves a look here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-8. Doubles: 4-5-6-8 with 3-5-6.
10th race – (3) Simplification was third after a huge win. Figuring he probably bounced off that win, he should rebound here and pull out a victory. (6) Graphic Detail comes off a promising maiden win and should be the one to fear. (5) Skippylongstocking fits in nicely here and cannot be overlooked. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Happy birthday, horses! Which is to say, “Happy New Year!” Here we go with the foal crop of 2019 beginning their march toward the Triple Crown, so it seems fitting to use three one-mile dirt races for freshly turned 3-year-olds in the first Weekend Gameplan of 2022.

Smarty Jones Stakes

The Oaklawn Park race has more entrants than the New York and California races combined, so we’ll begin here.

Don’t bother using the morning line as a guide; if you add up all the odds points, they go way, way, way over the maximum amount allowable. There are 15-1 shots that will be 60-1 and there’s going to be much more distinction in the group of 8-1 and 12-1 prices than is forecast in the line.

Fourteen horses, sure, but a grand total of one stakes winner, and seven horses stretching out from sprints. Not just that, but it’s really hard to say who, if anyone, is actually a good horse among this group. Ben Diesel looks to me like the most solid dirt-route stakes horse at this juncture and he’s all but eliminated after drawing post 14.

Kavod is the lone stakes winner, and his black-type success came sprinting over the Oaklawn track. I think he’ll regress off that sharp performance, and the horse just behind him last time, Higher Standard, did the opposite of flatter Kavod in the Dec. 27 Sugar Bowl at Fair Grounds.

Home Brew, from the Brad Cox juggernaut, is a route allowance winner over the surface but the comfortable lead he established there is highly unlikely here.

From a visual standout, Don’tcrossthedevil looked as good as any Smarty Jones entrant in his Remington allowance win. He accelerated so strongly past the three-furlong marker that he nearly blew the turn. But he’s changing barns off a private purchase and, even more concerning, his dam and siblings all were strictly sprinters.

Steve Asmussen runs three, all stretching out, and I’ll try one of them – All in Sync. Asmussen has gone sprint to route with 3-year-old stakes horses at Oaklawn nine times over the last five years, and eight of those horses finished third or better. All in Sync was one of the few runners from the barn who performed well at the Keeneland meet, and after showing speed in his debut there, he rated nicely just off the pace winning second out at Churchill Downs. That wasn’t a “wow” performance, but the colt did look handy and crossed the wire looking like he had plenty in the tank. The sire is a speed influence but the female family quickly goes to a great Phipps family that should impart sufficient stamina for All in Sync to get a mile.

Sham Stakes

I was high on Oviatt Class in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and while the colt was no match for Corniche, he did finish off the race decently and encountered a touch of trouble at the half-mile pole. Still, I’m taking Mackinnon to knock off Oviatt Class and a pair of Bob Baffert-trained runners in the Sham.

Mackinnon improved steadily through the fall, impressed training up to the BC Juvenile Turf, and ran commendably in that race. His subsequent Santa Anita training track works – at least the two available on video – were excellent, and while his knee action is high like that of a grass horse, I’ll guess he makes the transition to dirt no problem.

Jerome Stakes

Cooke Creek won’t be much of a price in the Jerome, but bettors so far haven’t accorded him respect and he might yet go postward as value in the win pool. His sprint debut was eye-catching, especially from a scopey colt who looks like a route horse, and the runner-up he held off in the Delaware Park stakes was a sharp Monmouth Park winner who has talent. Rockefeller got the jump on him last time, but Cooke Creek, while racing a bit green, still stretched nicely to the wire, and with any sort of trip Saturday he ought to take the measure of his Jerome rivals.

Kicking this sequence off on the Hillside Turf Course is a staple early on during the SA Meet—the Joe Hernandez S. Obviously, Mark Glatt’s Beer Can Man #1 is going to be a popular selection, not only because of the name, but also because he is a 4-yr-old sprinter through and through. Ever since he came to this barn and won at a big price in the DeMile (G3) @DMR, he has continued to be steady. With Flavien Prat riding, Little Red Feather Racing is hoping for a nice score. I do not like the inside post at all going down, and so I am going to look to use the field on this ticket. Most of the money will flow towards Glatt’s entry, so I want to take advantage of that … maybe I will get a price! Let’s go!

LEG 2: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 Mile, Sham S.(G3), $100k, 3)

The KYD148 Points race out West is this one, named for a former foe of the great Secretariat. Up for grabs … 10-4-2-1, which can be applied to a ticket to Churchill Downs. Bob Baffert’s entries, Newgrange #3 and Rockefeller #4 are excluded, but they can, of course, compete for purse money. I am going to spurn the HOF trainer because I am not afraid of what he is bringing to the post. Instead, I much prefer Doug O’Neill’s Mackinnon #1. Switching from “running” against Appleby’s Modern Games in the BC Juvenile Turf (G1) to this race might seem like specious reasoning, but it is not at all. John Sadler proved last year that a colt can make the adjustment quite well. Do not forget that this 3-yr-old is by American Pharoah, and he is up to take on this short field. It is a “Single” for me … trust in the riding ability of JJ Hernandez!

LEG 3: (Race 8: Turf, 1 1/8th, Robert J. Frankel S. (G3), $100k, F&M 4+)

A typically tough turf race on the docket, this year’s Frankel S. continues that tradition. After a survey of the form, I am pretty interested in taking a shot at Richard Baltas’ Luck #7. I know the 5-yr-old mare has posted some game efforts in a pair of “G” tries. They were both “place” finishes, and most will expect her to finally win her US debut. I will use her because she gets Flavien Prat, but I much prefer the uncoupled entry from Mike McCarthy’s midst. Moraz #4 and Global Brand #6 will be ridden by some SoCal lawn jockeys that know their business … JJ Hernandez and Umberto Rispoli. I am not saying that is a reason to bet them, just that it is worth mentioning. The former is an Oaks Trailer runner from last year, while the latter built some nice class … 1st @GP, then @DMR/SA. Both of these McCarthy-ites look like they will be suitable prices, and their conditioner’s ability is without question. Moving on …

LEG 4: (Race 9: Dirt, 1 1/16th, La Canada S.(G3), $200k, F&M 4+)

Moving right along towards the back half of the sequence, we find ourselves in a tough MT fight with older females coming out of their corners. Of course, Bob Baffert comes in with a strong hand. Velvet Slippers #4 with Johnny V aboard, and As Time Goes By #6 with Flavien Prat, are both logical, especially considering they are trained by such a well-known conditioner. The latter is laden with class, and for that reason, I think she will be my “Single” in this spot. I do not think she has many weaknesses coming off a win at Los Al in the Bayakoa (G3). I know she will end up being a short price on the board, but I can save some major cash … it is going to be needed in the nightcap.

LEG 5: (Race 10: Turf, 6F, AOC20k, 4+ Cal Breds)

I am thankful I saved my pennies because this Cal bred sprint on the grass is not going to be an easy call. You could go in several directions, and I would not have the guts to “Single” here in the last. Out of this “Baker’s Dozen,” I am pretty keen on Richard Baltas’ Brix #2 that is owned by Slam Dunk Racing. By Twirling Candy, the gelding is steeped in turf experience, and that sire tells me that he is ready to take to any green condition. Umberto Rispoli is a strong presence in the saddle out in SoCal @SA, and I am sure he is in for a good Meet. Let’s use a few others that should help us get this ticket cashed … What about the ability of Mark Glatt’s Aligato #4? Kitten’s Joy is a Ramsey sire that set the Thoroughbred world on fire. Even though the “R” Farm cannot keep the lights on too often, this one has promise after 3 career efforts, all on the turf. The gelding has a SA win on their course too! I am looking to go 6-Deep in this spot, so with 4 other spots open here are the remaining selections: Gary Stute’s Rifey #5, Bob Hess’ Riding With Dino #7, John Sadler’s Crossword #10, and last but not least, the boxcar-priced Me Likely #9. Trained by Milt Pineda, my shot of the day looks to score at a massive price of 30/1. Wouldn’t that be something with Fukumoto Daisuke aboard? Those 6 should form a nice pack!

The work of Bruce Levine is steady up at NYRA, and even though he may not have an expansive stable, it is still a good one with quality afoot. This filly by super sire Into Mischief is still looking to break her maiden after 4 tries—over all 3 NYRA courses. The drop from MSW Co. into this MC spot should be appreciated, and I would expect that she can win with Jose Ortiz piloting. Levine is ready … Ortiz is ready … let’s hope “Doc” is poised to visit the “Big A” Winner’s Circle!

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #3

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 9: Snicket #2, 5/1):

The last time David Duggan’s filly by Lemon Drop Kid won, it was over a year ago on this very track—Aqueduct. Since then, she has tried hard, and even graduated to ALLW Co. I think she is long overdue for a score, and with any luck, Dylan Davis can get her a much-needed win. She has the breeding, and confidence to get home, it is just going to take a clean trip to make it happen. Her past competing against MSW Co. speaks to her ability. I think her price will float above 5/1, and that makes her an overlay in my book. With speed figs increasing over her last 3 efforts, that sounds good to me.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 Mile, Jerome S. $150k, 3):

The new year 2022 is starting off with a bang with this KYD148 Points race. A good group of 8 newly-turned 3-yr-olds are heading to the post, and it looks like Jeremiah O’Dwyer’s entry, Cooke Creek #1, could be the tepid M/L favorite. That is based on the point that this son of Uncle Mo finished 2nd last time out in the Nashua (G3) at Belmont in early November. That was not a poor showing, especially considering that he was being shipped in from Delaware Park, a track that does not have NYRA-type class. Making the leap from a 50k “Non-G” into a Grade 3 is no small task. Don’t get me wrong, I like this runner quite a bit, and I am sure he is well-bred to handle this kind of competition. I would just rather back Kelly Breen’s Courvoisier #6. I think he should benefit from the cutback in distance, since he was running at 1 1/8th. The excellent Jose Ortiz gets the call this time, instead of Dylan Davis, and we should consider that a rider upgrade. There are some other fine horses drawn in, but I think I have hit upon an ice-cold Exacta. Let’s take Breen’s play over O’Dwyer’s colt. That should do the trick, and it might not end up being a bad payout in the end.
