GO SPEED RACER GO - Won his last after shipping in. I like him again. Utilizing this jockey/conditioner combination is a smart choice. INDY TOURIST - This colt should give a good account of himself in today's race. CAVE HILL - I like this gelding. Has the highest earnings per race in here. The improved Equibase speed figures over the last three races is solid. Maker drops him in this race ready to win.

GORDON ANTHONY - Has very good front speed and ought to fare soundly against this group. The speed rating of 83 from his last race looks strong in here. VIM AND VIGOR - He has been racing solidly lately while recording strong speed figs. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month.

CHIEFTAIN'S LADY - Mare took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. Look for this one to go straight to the winner's circle at some decent odds right here. Ran fifth in last race, but not more than 5 from the lead at the finish. SWANEE - I like to play this handicapping theory, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp effort within the last month or so. Like the way this mare's finish positions keep getting better. That's a sure sign of improving form. The jockey/handler tandem of Rivera and Preciado has a strong return on investment together. When a horse finishes in-the-money as often as this mare does, you will usually want to use her in your exotic wagers. The 97 last race figure looks strong on paper. Look at this pattern of improvement. 80/90/97 are the last three speed ratings. J AND K EXPRESS - When this jock and trainer are put together you have to take a look. Herrera and Ekstrom have been fabulous together. This thoroughbred brings in a lot of dough per start. I believe she can increase that total in this field. LAGATHA - This mare should give a good account of herself in today's event.

STYLEDOME (IRE) - Not easy to support any entrant in a short distance clash if she hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last sixty days. This equine didn't show any pace in the last affair. Now she is trying a sprint. Tough chance at the shorter distance. THE GREAT HAYNES - This pony ran a run-of-the-mill rating in the last race. She shouldn't improve and will probably lose in today's race running that fig. ATLANTIC STRIKE - Pace makes the race. Tough for this early speedball to be able to deal with the early pressure from the rest of this field. I find it hard to wager on this vulnerable equine this time out. Make her show you something in a sprint race before you bet on her in a race of 6 furlongs. The move down the stretch drive on Mar 4th indicated to me that this horse will have a tough go of it versus this bunch of tougher opponents.

The Lead:
All eyes and many dollars will be focused on Saturday's Rainbow 6 mandatory payout at Gulfstream Park. The projected, multi-million dollar pool extends Races 5-11. Part of that final 6 races' sequence will be the featured $100,000 Grade 3 Tropical Turf for grass milers in Race 8.

Field Depth:
LARGENT is a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed. PHAT MAN is a Grade 3 winner on dirt. VALUE PROPOSITION has been multiple Grade 3-placed. The rest are on the class rise.

Pace:
There's no clear-cut pacesetter on paper, though FLYING SCOTSMAN and stretch-out sprinter BELGRANO may be most likely. The favorites LARGENT and VALUE PROPOSITION should be in the front half of the pack pressing with every chance.

Our Eyes:
This looks like a showdown between LARGENT and VALUE PROPOSITION, no rarity to see a Gulfstream turf stakes shakes down between Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown trainees. While LARGENT is 4: 2-0-0 over the course and runner-up last year in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf, VALUE PROPOSITION has yet to try the local lawn in 13 career outings. The rift for LARGENT is that the Pegasus World Cup Turf was his most recent start some 50 weeks ago. VALUE PROPOSITION last raced Nov. 21 and comes nicely spaced in the Tropical turf off a pair of sprints in New York.

Form cycle players would lean to VALUE PROPOSITION in the head-to-head. It's notable that this race is 3 weeks in front of the 2022 Pegasus World Cup Turf, where LARGENT could be prepping. A smooth, easy go around there without being laid down on his belly would be the logical hope with a seven-figure stakes looming soon on the calendar.

The opposition includes dirt mile sort PHAT MAN, winless in 5 prior tries on turf, but 33 times experienced on dirt. His $669,109 in earnings tops the field as he uncorks his 8-year-old campaign for Kent Sweezey. A double-kicker here is that not only are we looking at a surface change, but this is a primarily 1-turn horse being asked to run around 2 on the that different surface. Overcoming both factors and beating Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown trainees requires a hefty reward. Be price sensitive if thinking about this one.

I have a stakes race at each of the three tracks I visited for my Saturday picks: Delta Downs, Oaklawn Park, and Santa Anita Park. Even better—I found underdog moneymakers for the stakes runs at Oaklawn and Santa Anita.

My Saturday Picks for Delta Downs

Let’s start on the main track with race one, a five-furlong allowance race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 2/1 morning-line favorite, Shades of Truth, piloted by veteran jockey Timothy Thornton.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money nine of her 13 career starts, winning three. Versus the rest of this unimpressive field of eight, she’s a star.

Top-ranked in wins and earnings every year since 2010, Karl Broberg trains Shades of Truth for owner Erin Gaarz.

Race seven is the Sam’s Town Stakes, a $75,000 purse, five-furlong on the dirt track for four-year-old’s and upward. Not to put too fine a point on it, this seven-horse race belongs to the 7/5 morning-line favorite, Greeley and Ben, with Timothy Thornton in the irons.
This eight-year-old gelding finished 22 of his 27 career starts in the money, winning 16 of them, including the David M. Vance Stakes (Black Type) at Remington Park in September. Of his most recent ten races, he went to the winner’s circle nine times. He is, as I like to say, a professional horse.

Race eight is a one-mile allowance optional claiming run on the main track for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the fourth-favored (at 6/1) Its a Wrap, ridden by Jose Andres Guerrero.

This five-year-old gelding moneyed eleven of his 17 career starts, winning five, including the Evangeline Mile Stakes (Black Type) at Evangeline Downs last August. His record puts him in the statistical lead of this otherwise unimpressive ten-horse field.

Saturday Picks for Oaklawn Park

We’re starting on the main track with race six, a six-furlong allowance optional claiming run for Arkansas-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward.

The record of the favorite in this race is a bit too erratic for my taste, and in any case, I think the second-favored (at 7/2) has the better shot: Connie K, with Jon Kenton Court in the irons.

That isn’t to say this four-year-old filly has a particularly impressive record—three money finishes in six career starts, two of them wins. Not bad, and certainly enough to put her in the statistical spotlight in this 14-horse field.

Race eight is the Pippin Stakes, a $150,000 purse, one mile run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. There are at lest three horses in this field that stand a better chance than the M/L favorite of winning this race, and my win ticket is on the 5/1 fourth-favored Breeze Rider, ridden by E.T. Baird.
This five-year-old mare finished in the money 16 of her 24 career starts, winning eleven, including her two most recent—the Joseph R. Peluso Memorial Stakes (Black Type) at Fair Grounds in November, and the My Charmer Stakes (Black Type) at Turfway Park in December.

Thirty-year horseracing veteran Steve Manley trains Breeze Rider for owner Mike Piazza. Incidentally, E.T. Baird was in the irons for Breeze Rider’s two stakes victories.

Race nine is a one-mile allowance race on the main track for three-year-old’s and upward. I’m backing one of the third-favored entries (the morning line has two at 5/1 odds in this race)—Runnin’ Ray, piloted by jockey John Hiraldo.

This six-year-old gelding finished in the money nine of his 17 career starts, winning four. In comparison, the M/L favorite, Carillo, moneyed two of his five career starts, winning one.

Ranked among the top 100 for both wins and earnings for the past seven years, Joe Sharp trains Runnin’ Ray for owners Wayne Sanders and Highlander Training Center.
Saturday’s Picks for Santa Anita Park

We’re starting on the turf course with race three, a 1-1/8 mile claiming run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the third-favored (at 7/2) Zabava, ridden by top jockey Juan J. Hernandez.

This six-year-old mare finished in the money 18 of her 33 career starts, winning nine, giving her the statistical edge in this fairly evenly matched eight-horse field.

Longtime horseracing veteran Steve Knapp trains Zabava for owners Monty Silverstone LLC, Steve R. Knapp, Larry Peal, and Steven M. Webb.

Incidentally, don’t even think about taking a flyer on either of the two 30/1 longshots in this race. If you want to waste two bucks, mail it to me.

We’re back on the dirt track for race six, an allowance optional claiming race for California-bred or -sired three-year-old fillies. My win ticket is on the third-favored (at 5/2) Youteyourhonor, with Juan J. Hernandez in the irons.
A standout in this short field of five, this filly moneyed all three of her career starts, winning two.

Clifford W. Sise Jr. trains Youteyourhonor for owners Theodore Aroney, Bertrand Hug, Philip R. Henry, and Kathleen L. Henry.

Race eight is the Santa Ynez Stakes (Grade II), a $200,000 purse, seven-furlong main track run for three-year-old fillies. This race has Road to the 2022 Kentucky Oaks points up for grabs for the four top finishers.

I’m backing the 3/1 third-favored entry, Awake At Midnyte, with veteran jockey Mario Gutierrez aboard.

This filly moneyed both of her career starts, winning her initial maiden attempt in October, then finishing a heartbreaking second in the Jimmy Durante Stakes (Grade III) at Del Mar in November, losing a trip to the winner’s circle by a nose.

Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup veteran Doug F. O’Neill trains Awake At Midyte for Reddam Racing LLC. O’Neill has tapped Mario Gutierrez to saddle Awake At Midnyte for both of her professional races.
