Today’s New York Hot List races to watch – Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Aqueduct

4^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (3) Vivazano (B) has had lots of chances and run well, but last time following a layoff, had to be taken up at the start and then rallied for third on a track that was favoring speed. (8) Our Jessica was fifth in her debut at odds of 5-1 in what turned out to be a strong field where the winner and the show horse came back to win their next starts. (1) Norman Queen debuted at Saratoga on the grass, set the pace, and faded to fourth in another key race. She has been off since that first start when she was claimed for $40,000. (4) Dorothy’s the Boss has been off since May with early races that showed some promise.

5^th race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (3) Champagne Poetry (B) made her career debut last month in a turf sprint at odds of 5-2. She raced greenly, had to steady, and still finished third. (1) Glitter Up will move from turf to dirt while exiting the same race as the Hot List horse that she beat after setting the pace. Her pedigree says that she should handle dirt racing. (2) Continentalcongres has good efforts on both turf and dirt and gets a positive rider change to Jose Lezcano. (7) Cupids Girl finished mid-pack in her debut at Aqueduct in November after a less than ideal start.

8^th race [OC 80k/N3X, 1 mi] – (2) Green Light Go (A) changed trainers to Jimmy Jerkens and came back from a layoff to run second in the Fall Highweight (G3). Remember that he was a graded stakes winner as a 2-year-old. (3) Lil Commissioner (D) took late money in his second start after a break and was sixth when bet down from 5-1 to 5-2. (4) Hanalei’s Houdini was claimed twice recently and settled in the barn of Mike Maker for whom he ran second in the Claiming Crown Series at Gulfstream Park. (5) Majestic Dunhill was fourth in the Gravesend (G3) at Aqueduct after a lengthy layoff. He is a past graded stakes winner.

9^th race [Md 20000, 1 mi] – (5) Rvindicated (C) was bet down from 8-1 to 5-1 and finished second in his first start on the dirt. (10) Dr. Levy returns as a new gelding with first-time Lasix and drops in the maiden claiming ranks for the first time for Todd Pletcher. (3) Illustrious was claimed for $30,000 two races back by Tom Morley and returned to finish third after pressing the pace. (1) Money Code will drop out of a pair of maiden special weights and ship up to Aqueduct from Laurel Park.

4th race – (5) Steak and Cheese ships in from California and could generate a tasty victory. (1) Prefect won by a nose last time and deserves a long look. (6) Bohemian Boy was second after a long layoff and should move forward off that try. (7) Ski Patrol should handle the switch to turf. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5. I realize that picking this filly by Uncle Mo might seem like specious reasoning, but here is the hope … I will wager some influential ‘cappers will steer clear of this one, and she might float up towards a more “bet-able” number on the tote … like 2/1? We shall see … There is no question that this Horacio DePaz trainee looks the classiest, even though she did not hit-the-board in her last race at Aqueduct. That was the Grade 3 Comely after all, and let’s face it, she did not have the best of starts. Manny Franco gets the call this time around, and I am sure he can get this one home. Tote watch time … anything above 4/5 is an overlay. My opinion …

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: High Tide #6, 6/1):

Much to like here with Dylan Davis’ mount for trainer Carlos Martin … This gelding by Malibu Moon used to be a Mike Maker runner before coming over to his new barn back in September. I realize he has mostly turf experience, but lest we forget, “Moons” can also run effectively on dirt. The best part is that class-wise the 5-yr-old should be able to hang with this crowd. Though he did not care for the off-track day back at “Big Sandy,” maybe the “Big A” will suit him … Looks like a score to me, even if Martin’s “Turf to Dirt” numbers are not the greatest. Exceptions can be made when the price is right …

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, OC80kn3x, 4+):

The Thursday “feature” on this wind-swept day is this race … an OC80k event for non-winners of 2 going a 1-turn mile @AQU! A glance through the form will quickly tell you that the Jerkens Barn has an uncoupled entry that appears ready to race. You might remember The Sound #1, a former Brad Cox barn-member, that was shifted by Shortleaf Stables back in April. He looks to be training well over at Belmont since November, and I am excited to see him back at it. When he was with Cox, this son of Hard Spun ran against some formidable opponents, with varied success. How about Idol, Warrior’s Map, Hollis, Strike Power, By My Standards, Rushie, and Wells Bayou? Some classy runners … Since we have not seen him since April, he could need a race, and that means that bettors might prefer the look of Jerkens’ other entry, Green Light Go #2. This one is also by Hard Spun, and returned to this conditioner after stints with Hollendorfer and Doyle. Back in 2019 and ’20, he ran on nicely for Jerkens, so it must be interesting for him to have this one back. His 1st race back in November saw him finish 2nd in a Grade 3 at Aqueduct, which was respectable because he had to come from well off-the-pace. I do not necessarily care for either of these entries on top because they are going to get over bet. Instead, let’s look more closely at George Weaver’s Majestic Dunhill #5. Drawn outside, this gelding by Majesticperfection is going to be a great price at odds over 5/1 by post time, and gets the services of Manny Franco. Last out in a “Non-G” on 19 Dec. he was having a time of it in the gate. Franco had to do all he could, but clearly his mount was not pleased to be there. With the class drop, Weaver’s skills, and the hope of a clean break, I like the wagering opportunity before us! Here is the ticket …

If you are after a “sure bet,” and quite a few are … then, look no further than this runner from the barn of Mike Stidham. This 5-yr-old mare by Ghostzapper has 15 starts to her credit, but no wins. Stidham is sending her to SHRP to get it done. A perennial MSW Co. router-turned-sprinter, she will be going 1 mile on the MT. The best is that she is drawn next door to a Steve Asmussen trainee, and that means that she will not be taking as much money. That might bring her up towards 5/2, and make this one a solid wager to win. The hot-riding Ry Eikleberry gets the call … all he did on Opening Weekend in Houston was win 7/14 races! Holy cow …

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 3: Aragon #9, 12/1):

Last season at “Sam,” trainer Tommy Short won nicely with some long odds runners. He can train, and it is a just matter of time before he scores again. He inherited this filly by Street Boss from John Ortiz, and she looks to have some advantages coming to Texas. She got her debut out of the way at Keeneland back in October in a MSW84k event. Even though the result was not spectacular (9th-showing little), she has the opportunity to improve sprinting on the MT. Sold at the Keeneland Nov. 2021 sale for $12k, the now 3-yr-old gets Lasix and “Blinkers,” which could provide the key to victory. This is a much lower condition, and Short knows how to get them ready. The best news is that the odds are sure to be double-digits! Let’s go …

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 5: Turf, 1 Mile, Clm25kn3L, F&M 4+):

Taking to the John B. Connally Turf Course, it is time for a good group of claimers to take to the green. Out of the 8 that are drawn in here, you could go in several directions. I am sure the team of Austin Gustafson and Ry Eikleberry will garner some attention with Magical Soul #6. This is a recent acquisition for the barn, and this filly by More Than Ready was bred for the grass. She was running up at Woodbine for Pat Parente against better. Coming to H-Town will be a drop in company for this one. I do not think that I want to take 9/5 on this surface because as we know, anything can happen … If she is sharp, she can win, but I would like to find a top pick with a little more recency than October. For my money, let’s tab an entry like Ronnie Cravens’ Twilight Curfew #8. Here is a daughter of Twirling Candy that is going to be getting back to a surface that she truly liked when she ran at Remington last fall. If Carlos Montalvo can keep her loaded, and forwardly-placed, I think she has a great shot at a score. She last ran on the undercard in OKC on Springboard Mile Night 17 Dec., and clearly was overmatched. This is a much better spot for her, and Cravens knows this track through and through. I am going to use her as my “key,” and roll under Gustafson’s entry, plus Steve Asmussen’s Daddymademedoit #3 and Karl Broberg’s Miss B #4. Nice ticket …

Thursday Picks for Charles Town Races

Let’s start on the dirt track with race four, a 4-1/2 furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 9/2 third-favored Gandhi’s Castle, ridden by Gustavo Larrosa.

This five-year-old mare finished in the money 12 of her 26 career starts, winning seven—five of those in 2021. Versus the rest of this ten-horse filed, she’ll do.

Race seven is a 1-1/8 miles starter allowance race on the main track for four-year-old’s and upward. My money’s on the 9/2 third-favored Cantakeitanymore, with veteran jockey J.D. Acosta in the irons.
Statistically the best this nine-horse field has to offer, this seven-year-old gelding has improved with age, finishing in the money 24 of his 52 career starts, winning ten—five of which were in 2021. I know, I just said that about my pick in race four, but facts is facts.

Cantakeitanymore is trained by owner Christopher M. Keller, who has put Acosta aboard Cantakeitanymore for his most recent four races.

Race eight is a 4-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. While this should be a much tighter race than the morning line would have us believe, I still agree that the 7/5 favorite is the right pick, so my two dollars is on Peppa Starr, piloted by veteran jockey Antonio Lopez.

This four-year-old filly finished seven of her nine career starts in the money, winning five.

Javier Contreras trains Peppa Starr for Breeze Easy, LLC. Contreras has put Lopez in the irons for all but the first three of Peppa Starr’s professional runs.
My Thursday Picks for Fair Grounds Race Course

We’ll start at Fair Grounds on the dirt track with race five, a one-mile allowance race for Louisiana-bred three-year-old fillies that have never won two races. I’m calling this one for the 8/5 morning-line favorite, Medley, with Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr. aboard.

This three-year-old filly moneyed all five of her career starts, graduating from the maiden class on her fourth attempt. She then finished a solid third in the Louisiana Champions Day Lassie Stakes (Black Type) last month here at Fair Grounds, which saw a 93/1 longshot crossing the wire first—ahead of the race’s 2/1 favorite, who in turn beat Medley by a neck.

Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup veteran Steven M. Asmussen trains Medley for owners Corrine Heiligbrodt, L. William Heiligbrodt, and Spendthrift Farm LLC.

Race seven is a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race on the main track for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 6/1 sleeper, Starburst, with Reylu Gutierrez aboard.
This four-year-old gelding finished in the money three of his five career starts, winning all three of those money finishes including his initial maiden attempt back in October of 2020 at Laurel Park and his most recent allowance race at Delaware Park in October 2021.

A top 100-ranked trainer every year since 2004, Michael Stidham trains Starburst for Dare To Dream Stable LLC (Michael Faber).

Let’s move to the grass course for race eight, 1-1/16 miles allowance optional claiming run for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m going with the morning line’s pick here: the 7/2 favorite, Big Agenda, ridden by Deshawn L. Parker.

This seven-year-old gelding moneyed 18 of his 27 career starts, winning five. He notably finished second in the Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes (Listed) here at Fair Grounds a year ago this month.

Thursday’s Picks for Sam Houston Race Park

Let’s start on the turf course with race five, a one-mile claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won three races. I’m betting my two dollars on the 6/1 underdog, Hailey’s Melody, ridden by Jose L. Alvarez.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money three of her six career starts, winning two, giving her a significant statistical lead in this eight-horse field.

Hailey’s Melody is trained by owner Joe S. Offolter, who has put Alvarez in the irons for three of Hailey’s Melody’s earlier races, including her maiden graduation run.

We’re back on the dirt track for race six, a one-mile allowance run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m betting on the 5/1 underdog, Too Much Irish, with Lane J. Luzzi in the irons.
This six-year-old mare moneyed five of her ten career starts, three of those wins. She notably placed fourth in the 2019 Fiesta Mile Stakes (Black Type) at Retama Park, the 2020 Miss Houston Turf Stakes (Black Type) here at Sam Houston, and the 2020 San Jacinto Turf Stakes (Black Type) at Lone Star.

Co-owner Danny Pish trains Too Much Irish for Lane M. Hutchins and himself. Pish has tapped Luzzi to saddle Too Much Irish for all ten of her professional runs.

Race seven is a 5-1/2 furlong claiming race on the dirt track for three-year-old fillies that have never won two races. I’m backing the 6/1 underdog, Put a Bling On It, ridden by Obed Sanchez.

A stand-out in this mostly untested field of seven, this three-year-old filly moneyed two of her three career starts, winning one.

Regularly ranked in the top 100 for wins, earnings, or both since 2014, J.R. Caldwell trains Put a Bling On It for Mojo Racing Partners.
