Best Horse Racing Bets for Thursday, January 20, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

My Thursday picks at Charles Town Races, Fair Ground Race Course, and Sam Houston Race Park ran the gamut for deep-sleepers at Fair Grounds to favorites with mortal lock-level morning-line odds at Sam Houston.

Don’t forget to check my math (I was sick the day they taught arithmetic in school) at one of our recommended online racebooks.

      Good luck!
Thursday’s Picks for Charles Town Races

Let’s start on the main track for race three, a 6-1/2 furlong allowance run for four-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races (West Virginia-bred races not considered for eligibility).

I’m betting on the second-favored (at 6/5) Nico, piloted by veteran jockey Antonio Lopez.

This five-year-old moneyed ten of his eleven career starts, winning five—two in 2019 and three in 2021 (he took 2020 off). Nico notably finished second in both the Henry Mercer Memorial Stakes (Black Type) and the West Virginia Vincent Moscarelli Memorial Breeders’ Classic Stakes (Black Type) in 2019 at Charles Town. His speed figures remain high.

Thirty-five-year horseracing veteran Javier Contreras trains Nico for owner-breeder O’Sullivan Farms LLC. Contreras has put Lopez in the irons for all six of Nico’s 2021 races, resulting in one also-ran, two seconds, and three wins.

Race seven is a 4-1/2 furlong allowance race on the dirt track for West Virginia-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won three races. I like the third-favored (at 7/2) Eye of the Needle, ridden by Fredy Peltroche.
This four-year-old filly finished in the money seven of her nine career starts, winning two. Her most recent three races resulted in one third and two wins. Peltroche was aboard for those three races.

With more than four decades in the business, David Walters trains Eye of the Needle for owner-breeder Michael J. Miller.

Race eight is a 4-1/2 furlong allowance race ont eh dirt track for three-year-old’s that have never won two races (West Virginia-bred races not considers for eligibility). I’m buying a win ticket on 8/5 morning-line favorite, Run to Daylight, with top jockey Arnaldo Bocachica in the irons.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed three of his five career starts, winning all three—his initial maiden attempt last August, the Henry Mercer Memorial Stakes (Black Type) in September, and the West Virginia Vincent Moscarelli Memorial Breeders’ Classic Stakes (Black Type) in October.

He was an also-ran in his next two stakes races, but his speed figures remain consistently high.

Among the top-ranked trainers in North America for the past two decades, Jeff C. Runco trains Run to Daylight for owner David M. Raim.
Thursday Picks for Fair Grounds Race Course

We’re on the turf for race two, a five-furlong starter optional claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward.

If the also eligible/MTO entry Curtin’s Up is in this race, bet him to win. He’s piloted this run by Jose Riquelme with 3/1 morning-line odds making him the second-favored horse.

Trained by Keith G. Bourgeois for owner Matthew Bellard, this six-year-old gelding moneyed nine of his 16 career starts, winning seven.

If that doesn’t happen, bet the other 3/1 second-favored entry, Spectrolite, ridden by Roberto Morales. This ten-year-old gelding finished in the money 19 of his 35 career starts, winning 13. Shane Wilson trains Spectrolite for David Fontenot Racing LLC.

We’re moving back to the dirt track for race three, a six-furlong claiming race for Louisiana-bred four-year-old’s and upward that have never won four races or have not won two races since July 20, 2021. I like the 7/2 second-favored Cryptozonic, with jockey James Graham aboard.
This five-year-old gelding finished 12 of his 18 career starts in the money, winning four, giving him the statistical edge in this eight-horse field.

Regularly ranked among the top trainers in North America over the past decade, Joseph M. Foster trains Cryptozonic for owner Dusty Foster.

Returning to the turf for race six, a 7-1/2 furlong allowance race for Louisiana-bred three-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races. I’m calling this one for the 8/1 sleeper, Big Scully, ridden by Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed three of his four career starts, winning one. Most recently, he finished third in the Louisiana Futurity (Black Type) in December. In September he finished sixth in an 11-horse field in the Hopeful Stakes (Grade I) at Saratoga.

Breeders’ Cup veteran Dallas Stewart trains Big Scully for Valene Farms LLC.
My Thursday Picks for Sam Houston Race Park

We’ll start on the dirt track with race one: the My Dandy Division of the Clarence Scharbauer Jr. Texas Stallion Stakes, a $75,000 purse, 5-1/2 furlong run for Texas-sired three-year-old colts and geldings.

This short field of five yields up our no-brainer bet of the day: the 2/5 morning-line favorite, Pinky Ring Bling, with Ernesto Valdez-Jiminez in the irons.
This colt finished in the money for all five of his career starts, winning one. He also finished third in both the Texas Stallion Staunch Avenger Division Stakes (Black Type) at Lone Star last June and the Kip Deville Stakes (Black Type) at Remington Park last September.

Ronnie E. Cravens III trains Pinky Ring Bling for Lone Star Racing Club.

Race two is the Darby’s Daughter Division of the Clarence Scharbauer Jr. Texas Stallion Stakes, a $75,000 purse, 5-1/2 furlong race for Texas-sired three-year-old fillies. This is another five-horse field, but the choices are not quite as obvious.

Still, I’m backing the 6/5 morning-line favorite, Eagle Express, ridden by veteran jockey Stewart Elliott.

This filly finished in the money three of her five career starts, winning one—the Texas Stallion Pan Zareta Division Stakes (Black Type) last June at Lone Star. She also finished second in her initial maiden attempt, and third in the Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes (Black Type) last August at Prairie Meadows.

Hall of Famer Steven M. Asmussen trains Eagle Express for owner-breeder W.S. Farish.

Race seven is a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I must go with the 5/2 morning-line favorite here, as well: Shes Our Fastest, piloted by Ty Kennedy.
This is an easy pick simply because this seven-year-old mare has already bested the other frontrunners of this nine-horse field in other races.

For the record, she finished 27 of her 38 career starts in the money, winning ten—eight of which were stakes races, from the Evangeline Downs Princess Stakes in 2017 right after her initial maiden run to the Bluebonnet Stakes (Black Type) last April and the Valor Farm Stakes (Black Type) last July.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers in 2021, Scott Gelner trains Shes Our Fastest for owners Mark Norman and Norman Stables LLC.

            Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 20th January 2022
            By: Racing and Sports

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 20.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Tamworth, Pakenham, Pinjarra Scarpside, Warrnambool and Rockhampton.

            TAMWORTH: RACE 4 @ 3:05 PM

Former Godolphin galloper AMULET STREET (1) has done everything but win with eight placings from nine starts and deserves to break through here. Has placed over this journey and will strip fitter second-up from a long spell. Rates highly and expected to be right there when the whips are cracking. ALMORAH (10) improved sharply in her first run for the new stable when a close-up fourth at Gosford. Will find this easier and looks a top-three contender. CIVIL WAR (7) gets 3kg off and drawn to get a soft run from the inside alley. In the mix. ANSELMO (2) has placed five from seven overall and is a must for exotics players. JUST IN REACH (3) has placed three from three and deserves consideration in this.
            SELECTIONS: Amulet Street to win.

            PAKENHAM: RACE 2 @ 6:15 PM

SHALILY (11) goes wet and dry and there was a lot to like about her Cranbourne placing racing 2-1. She draws better today and fitter will take beating. FLAME OF VENICE (10) was only beaten 1.9L on debut chasing solidly. Has a soft draw and can improve into the finish. OCEAN CHIEF (3) has been competition in stronger in town and they stack right up. A chance if he can kick-up from the rail. CARLISLE BELLS (9) is an improver from a leading barn and has the blinkers applied first time.
            SELECTIONS: Backing Shalily to win.

            ROCKHAMPTON: RACE 7 @ 4:50 PM

AERIAL COMBAT (5) won the 60 easily and then was well-backed again and didn't have the best of it this grade rising to the mile. He's trialled well since and fitter can bounce back with the in-form McMahon sticking from the trial. SCENT OF FEAR (7) brings a string of placings this distance range and has the blinkers applied first time. Sits well in the weights and gets another chance. PLANET WARRIOR (2) is a stablemate who resumed in good order in Open grade. He goes well second up and gets Stanley for Swell who goes onto the above. CROCKETT (3) ruins along and has been racing in better company at Doomben. Was a big winner three back this grade at the Sunshine Coast and keep very safe. SELECTIONS: Backing Aerial Combat.

            WARRNAMBOOL: RACE 7 @ 4:30 PM

TUVALU (4) is coming off a break. Has excellent fresh credentials and did chase home I'm Thunderstruck when resuming last time. Looks well placed against this lot. Should be hard to beat. ZOLTAN (6) came across from New Zealand and didn't have a lot of luck at Australian debut. Will be better for that run and has to be treated with respect. LORENTE (5) is resuming. Has a good record and did perform well at only previous fresh outing. Worth keeping in mind for multiples. PRINCE OF EAGLES (8) is a lightly-raced newcomer to the Lindsey Smith stable with a good record in the UK. Is certainly one to keep an eye on at first start in Australia.
            SELECTIONS: Back Tuvalu to win.

            WARRNAMBOOL: RACE 8 @ 5:00 PM

ANGEL ROCK (6) was a Geelong winner in November and two subsequent outings in town were solid efforts for this type of race. Back on home track and should be hard to beat. NORDIC SYMPHONY (3) scored here in late November and hasn't been too far from the money in recent efforts. Narrowly beaten last time and should make a bold bid. THE NEPHEW (9) has had his races well spaced of late. Wasn't that far away in town last time and a forward showing is on the cards. CUBAN STATE (4) followed a Balaklava win with a narrow defeat at Morphettville before disappointing at Sandown last time. Can bounce back in this grade.
SELECTIONS: Back Angel Rock to win.

              Today’s Racing Tips – January 20th

There are three race meetings in the UK on Thursday, with the jumps action at Ludlow and Wincanton. Both tracks have dried out through the week from soft ground, and the emphasis is sure to be on speed at both sharp right handed courses. There is twilight action on the tapeta at Newcastle for all-weather fans to get stuck into, with the lights coming on at 3.55pm.

              Duke of Rockingham

              Wincanton 1:15 pm

Olly Murphy’s bumper winner made a very promising hurdling debut when just touched off in a huge field at Lingfield, and he should relish this test of speed on drying ground at Wincanton on Thursday. His jumping is sure to slicken for that initial experience, and Aidan Coleman is sure to be positive in a race lacking realistic contenders in the form-book.

              Oneupmanship

              Wincanton 2:15 pm

Jack Barber’s winning hurdler was in the process of making a promising chasing debut when falling two out at Ffos Las in December, just fading into the places at the time in a strongly run race on the very heavy ground. He jumped out to the right there so a switch this way round is a big plus, while he ran a screamer here over this kind of trip over timber when second to Sizeable Sam last season.

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Thursday, January 20
Posted on January 19, 2022 by David Aragona

                RACE 5: CHOOSE HAPPINESS (#2)

Dancing Kiki is obviously the horse to beat as she drops in for a tag for the first time since getting claimed for $35k by Michael Dubb and Mike Maker at Saratoga. If she runs back to her victory in the Saratoga Dew last August she will most assuredly find herself in the winner’s circle after this race. However, it seems unlikely that we’ll see that version of this mare. It’s also worth noting that she rode a speed bias on the day she won the Saratoga Dew. That said, she still displayed sudden improvement off the claim for Maker at a time when his barn was his barn sending out nothing but live runners through the first half of the Saratoga meet. She ran poorly in the Empire Distaff when last seen and now has been off for 3 months. She clearly hasn’t panned out recently, and she’s not exactly formidable against this field if she’s turned back into the horse that she was prior to the Maker claim. The other major players exit a common race at this level on Dec. 19. Honey Money achieved the best result checking in second behind dominant winner Vienna Code. She got a somewhat curious ride that day, as she was reserved off the pace despite looking like the controlling speed on paper. She did finish well, but did so in a race that turned into a sprint to the finish after slow early fractions. I’m not convinced that she can get the mile in a truly run race, and the barn has been cold lately. My top pick is Choose Happiness, who finished just behind Honey Money last time. She was most compromised by the slow pace, since she was reserved at the back of the pack early. She also spent the first half of her trip riding the rail on a day when that was not the place to be. She’s displayed steady improvement for Orlando Noda this year and may not have to improve much on her most recent effort if the favorite fails to show up.

                RACE 7: GOLDEN PLUME (#1)

My Roxy Girl could go favored here as she steps up in class first off the claim for Linda Rice. Many players will be aware of the fact that she didn’t get the best ride or trip from Raul Mena last time out when she ran here just 7 days ago. She got caught in a pocket early and then found herself in traffic with nowhere to go when trying to split tiring runners in the stretch. It was an awkward trip and she arguably could have won that race with a clean run. However, it’s not as if she’s coming into this race with especially hidden form. She was running well prior to that for Juan Vazquez, and it seems unlikely that Linda Rice will improve a horse who already seemed to be firing on all cylinders. She can obviously win if she merely holds her form, but she’s moving up in class and there are more intriguing options at better prices. Some may be willing to give another shot to More Moonshine, but she’s run out of chances for me. She looked so promising at the start of her career, but she’s failed to recreate that debut performance in three subsequent starts. A couple of runners are switching from turf to dirt for the first time. I’m against Kept Waiting, who could take money due to the fact that she goes out for the hot Rob Falcone barn. She obviously comes off a career-best effort, but I’m not convinced that she’ll handle the main track. I am more optimistic about the dirt prospects of Golden Plume, who also switches surfaces. While her dam Nebraska Tornado was a very good turf horse, she did earn an 86 Beyer on dirt in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She’s primarily produced turf horses, but this filly is by Candy Ride. Furthermore, she’s always trained exceptionally well on the dirt, appearing to relish this surface in the mornings. She doesn’t have an overly turfy running style, lacking a turn of foot, so perhaps she’ll take to dirt. Chad Brown actually has solid stats making this move with older runners.

RACE 8: WILD CARP DIEM (#3)

Gimmedamoney looked like a promising sort in his career debut last summer, but he never really progressed thereafter. He was a disappointing beaten favorite second time out and has failed to make a major impact in any of his subsequent starts. In fairness to him, a couple of those came against stakes company at Finger Lakes, and you can’t fault him for losing to top NY-bred sprinter Senbei two back This horse was purchased by Parx-based connections for $22k out of the Fasig-Tipton December sale, so this $40k tag seems realistic. I’m just not totally convinced that he has a significant advantage over this field if he merely reproduces his last dirt effort. I’m most interested in a couple of alternatives. One of those is Bointheback, who drops in class second off the claim for Greg DiPrima. He put forth a trio of respectable efforts at the outset of his career for Tony Dutrow, but he didn’t really progress with his peers through the latter half of the year. That said, he ran fairly well at this level two back, and now he’s cutting back to the right distance after trying a tough maiden special weight last time. Greg DiPrima once had very good stats second off the claim. My top pick is Wild Carp Diem. He was never seriously involved in the turf debut, but he didn’t put in a bad effort, running along in mid-pack throughout. He switched to dirt out of necessity last time and put in another respectable showing. He was obviously no match for talented runaway winner Impressionist, but he was doing some running late after altering course in upper stretch. He appeared to handle the dirt without issue, and now he’s simply getting needed class relief.

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Aqueduct for January 20, 2022
                  By: Aaron Halterman

The action rolls on today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park today, which has another good Thursday card. We will also be covering Aqueduct today for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. We’ve been hot lately, so hopefully we can keep it up! Let’s get it going down in South Florida today!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

                  Gulfstream Park January 20, 2022

                  Race 6: Maiden Special Weight

#3 Credit Event makes his debut for Chad Brown in this spot after a series of solid workouts. Brown is doing better than usual at this meet so far. #7 Forwardly also runs for Chad Brown after a fifth place debut over the turf at Aqueduct last time out.

                  Race 7: Starter Allowance

#2 Larimar will try the synthetic surface today after some near misses at this level on the dirt. If she takes to the surface, she is the one to beat in this spot. #1 Trevess won over this surface las time out in impressive fashion. This spot looks a bit tougher today; however, she still fits in well.

                  Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#4 Souper All Star was a solid fourth over this track last time out, and should improve off of that effort in this spot today. #1 Brodys Honor cuts back to a mile for this race, which seems to be her best distance. Look for her to be the one setting the pace in this spot.

                  Race 9: Claiming

#3 Parlor nearly won on this surface last time out, which was his debut race over the track. With improvement, he is clearly the one to beat today. #2 Kittens Spa also should improve with this being his second start over the synthetic surface here at Gulfstream.

                  THE TICKET

                  $.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 2,3,4,7 / 1,2 / 1,4,6,7 / 1,2,3 – $48

                    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                    Fair Grounds - Race #6
                    Picks Notes
#9 Your Time's Coming There seems to be enough pace signed on in here to give this guy some honest fractions to chase, and he ran well in a couple of turf tries last season. Think he might be along late at a decent number.
#2 Custom Bobby's He is dangerous with this kind, but he is going to have to show some pace from the fence, and there might be a couple other forward players lined up in this spot to make things a bit difficult for him.
#7 My Nanny's a Hoot She's in with the boys while rising to face winners, but her turf debut produced a nice step in the right direction when landing the maiden win last out, and another improved race might keep her in the frame for a piece of this at a price.
Race Summary Your Time's Coming lacks speed, but he is a pretty reliable finishing type in a race where there might be just enough pace pressure to ensure nobody gets a good chance to back up the splits.

                    Fair Grounds - Race #8
                    Picks Notes
#6 Memphis Cash Queen She stepped forward nicely when sent around two turns in her local debut, and her tactical style should leave her in a great spot turning for home. Dangerous here if she handles the new footing.
#8 Earley Rose She went kind of evenly in the debut run, but that was a turf route try at first asking, giving her some upside with that race under her belt. Maybe she sustains her move a bit better today.
#2 Freudian She came up short as the 1/5 chalk in her latest try, but has some upside on the move to the turf and should be able to land a decent trip while in touch with the splits. Capable.
Race Summary Memphis Cash Queen should be in line for a great trip tracking the splits, and she ran well enough behind an easy winner when trying similar enough company on the main track last time out.

                    Fair Grounds - Race #9
                    Picks Notes
#7 Renati He opened up a big lead and actually stayed on pretty well when third in the career debut, and now he has the chance to flash that route pace while cutting back. Mom was solid around one turn, and this guy might be a real handful today.
#3 Basti Blue He finished in front of the top choice when they met in December, but he stopped without much resistance in his follow up effort later in the month. Chance to show up late while turning back.
#6 Its Wild Again Debuter goes for a capable team, and he is meeting a group that may not be the deepest for the level. Think he might be a little bit live here, and that's probably enough to keep him in the picture.
Race Summary Renati showed runoff route pace in the debut try, but he held for third and might appreciate the ability to be a bit more freewheeling early at a trip that might be more appropriate for it. Think he has some interesting upside here at anything like the 9/2 ML price.

                      Dover Downs - Race #1
                      Picks Notes
#2 CAPT JACK HANOVER Long, first-over grind, late burst came up a nose short.
#9 JACKIE MOON Solid numbers, gets class relief, but starts from second tier.
#3 TABOOMA Can't seem to avoid first-over trips, might be put into play earlier.
Race Summary Capt Jack Hanover waited on cover that didn't develop, rallied first-over from the far turn to the finish and lunged late to just miss. He can atone as the beaten favorite with a better trip. Play 2-3 and 2-9 exactas.

                      Yonkers - Race #3
                      Picks Notes
#2 MALNIFICENT Classy 7-year-old responded to front-end assignment with 26th win.
#3 ROBYN CAMDEN Paced evenly off freshening against better, seeks 37th win.
#1 JUXTA COWGIRL Couldn't keep up with sharp winner at the Meadowlands.
Race Summary Malnificent changed tactics, increased her lead through a :57 middle half and held on to win with first-time Lasix. She has plenty of back class to handle the step up in company. Play 2-1 and 2-3 exactas.

                      Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #8
                      Picks Notes
#4 TUCKERS OUT Seeks re-run of race two back, when traffic woes cost him victory.
#7 URS IFU WANT IT Gets class relief and Lasix for third start locally.
#1 MUSCLES FOREVER Returns from half-mile track, can use his speed wisely from the rail.
Race Summary Tuckers Out raced far back from post 9 and showed some late interest last week. His was trapped inside by a lively outer flow in the race prior and closed with a rush for second after he angled for running room in deep stretch. Bet on him to win and place.

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #5
                        Picks Notes
#5 Our Country Goes 'blinkers off' today and has been fairly close in his last six -- all against starter allowance rivals in New York. Back to turf after three on dirt and Alvarado will have him moving well at the end.
#2 Catch That Party Was along for second last out at Belmont and ran well vs. New York-breds.
#7 Private Island Comes out of a tough spot in which he didn't fire; was third in a Keeneland allowance two back and can be a factor if he runs back to that one.
Race Summary Our Country can get a relax trip early, will go all out in the stretch and has a good chance to run down his opponent at this distance.

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #7
                        Picks Notes
#3 Dial to Win Took to Tapeta in her first attempt and drew off to a four-length win; made a strong move when asked and was claimed by Hess, who can be effective with newcomers to his stable.
#1 Trevess Ran well on synth last out and was up in time as the favorite; turns back from 5.5 to five furlongs.
#6 Nikee Kan Moves over from the turf and can improve on her only all-weather attempts; can close into this rapid pace.
Race Summary Dial to Win's last trip was too good to ignore and the way in which she finished should make her very difficult right back.

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #8
                        Picks Notes
#1 Brody's Honor Easily has enough speed to get to the lead and rider Saez is one of the best at holding together pacesetters such as this. Can wire this group.
#3 Dance Till Dawn Likely to be closer to the lead this time and should have enough left to stay for a piece of it.
#5 Yolanda's Pride Has been on the front end with soft fractions and will have to work a little harder to get into that position here; capable of another good effort.
Race Summary Brady's Honor can take immediate command and can respond when challenged; tough to get past Saez in such situations.

                          Aqueduct Picks - Thursday, January 20, 2022

                          Race 1: 5-6-1-3
                          Race 2: 1/1A-5-4-6
                          Race 3: 3-2-6-7
                          Race 4: 1-8-4-6
                          Race 5: 3-5-4-2
                          Race 6: 5-2-8-4
                          Race 7: 3-9-4-5
                          Race 8: 4-8-10-1
**Most Likely Winner: Motion To Strike #1 (Race 4)**
**Best Value: Frost Me #3 (Race 5)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Motion to Strike #1, 7/2):

This son of Competitive Edge has the look of a winner, especially after he absolutely blew the break last time out at Aqueduct. It was an off-track that day, and he has the chance to make amends in this spot for Patrick Reynolds. The class level is spot on, and I would expect the well-travelled Jose Ortiz to have the ability to put him in the right position. Just 2-off the front should do the trick, but first, he is going to have to let this one clear the gate. If the pair can do that … they should score.

                          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #1

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Frost Me #3, 4/1):

I have made no bones about it … if I see a runner that is by the sire Frosted, I am going to take a serious look. This filly has the ability to take on this crowd, a bullet work of late, and I believe in Eric Cancel … even if his numbers do not speak to intended success. Trainer John Kimmel could use a win too, and he has a shot with a runner who needs some pace to run into. I think the daughter of Frosted will get it on Thursday. What I really need is her price to drift north of 5/1 … wouldn’t that be sweet?

                          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

                          Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 7F, ALLW82k, F&M 4+):

There is much to like in a race like this one … Look at all the angles! You have a field of 9, and there are definitely some “shots” that could make an impact. Take for instance Luis Miranda’s Madera #9. Last out in an ALLW Co. contest, this frontrunner was pretty impressive coming over from Finger Lakes. When you can step-up at the “Big A,” and finish 3rd, that is saying something. I know this mare by Ghostzapper faded at the top of the lane, but maybe this time around will be different. The young Ailsa Morrison gets the call, and she already has a trio of wins during the Meet. Using this one seems sensible, especially considering the price—20/1 on the M/L. My top selection though will come from Robert Falcone’s midst. Kept Waiting #4 was sure on fire last time going 6F on the turf. I realize she was bred to be a turf horse, but maybe that breakaway speed of hers could be useful on the dirt. With Kendrick Carmouche in the irons, he could be looking to get her free late in the game. Running against open company like this is a tough ask, but as I said, if she can make the switch then it could lead to a score. One other entry that is enticing is Bill Mott’s More Moonshine #3. Off since the end of November, the HOF trainer has had this filly working well on the tab. With some maturity under her, that could bode well for a breakout. She has potential, and Malibu Moon’s legacy by her side … plus the solid handling skills of Jose Lezcano. What a price at 6/1! Let’s put all of these into a Trifecta, and reap the benefits!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 3/4/9

                            Purse:$30,800

Race 3 is the co-feature event at Charles Town tonight. This race should be a good one between two capable runners in River Crosroad Rvf and Nico.

Nico can get this done from the outside if he’s interested on this day. He’s a consistent type that that has finished in the top-2 in 10 of 11 appearances.

His top-2 run went on for a long time before it came to an end on December 16. He didn’t come close in that outing, as he finished 6th for a $30,800 purse.

It was unlike Nico after he won for the fifth time on November 25 in a $30,800 race by 1 ½ lengths. It was a slightly tougher field, including River Crosroad Rvf who won by 4 lengths.

River Crosroad Rvf won his second in a row and third in four attempts. He is 5 for 14 overall and 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st in his last five outings.

Coming off a back-to-back win in a $35,200 race by 4 ¾ lengths and $30,800 by 4 lengths, he’s in the best form of his career. River Crosroad Rvf must be considered to win.

                            Purse:$18,700

Race 5 covers 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt for an $18,700 purse. Look for Shoofly Pie and Silver and Blues to run good in this assignment.

Shoofly Pie is winless in four races, going 7th, 6th, 4th, 3rd in four races. In her most recent outing, Shoofly Pie showed 3rd in a $17,000 race on September 3, 2020 after finishing 4th on August 13, 2020 in the same grade.

This mare is coming off an extended layoff that likely did her some good. She is well-rested and is carrying herself well in workouts. Off a break, expect Shoofly Pie to be competitive.

Silver and Blues is winless in five attempts, finishing 7th, 8th, 12th, 2nd, 2nd in her work on the track. She has been coming on and coming close recently.

In her last two races, Silver and Blues placed 2nd behind Tina’s Song by a half-length in a $12,100 race. After a productive run in that spot, she placed 2nd behind Tonala by 8 ¼ lengths in the same grade.

That doesn’t look the best, but the competition she is facing on Thursday doesn’t look the toughest. In a race she should like versus this field, Silver and Blues has to be worth considering on your shortlist.

                            Purse:$30,800

Race 8 should be a good one between Big Boy Potts and Run to Daylight in the stretch run. Big Boy Potts is a one-time winner with a win two races back on November 12.

He’s finished 3rd, 6th, 2nd, 1st, 2nd through the first five races of his career. In his win in November, Big Boy Potts defeated Baytown Jakester by 4 lengths for a $29,700 purse.

That was a pretty nice statement win for Big Boy Potts after getting disqualified and dropped to 2nd a race earlier. In his most recent outing, he placed 2nd behind Baytown Frosty by 3 lengths in a $30,800 race on December 11.

Run to Daylight is 3 for 5 with stakes experience. Four of his five races have been stakes races, with a win in the $75,000 West Virginia Moscarelli Memorial Breeders’ Classic Stakes most recently on October 9. That was an impressive 2 ¼ length win.

After going 1st, 1st, 1st, 7th, 4th with two straight losses, Run to Daylight is down in class to this level. After competing in stakes races, this should be more than beatable for him. He looks like the pick in Race 8.

                              Purse:$13,000

The fourth race at Sam Houston Race Park is a $13,000 event covering 6 ½ furlongs. Look for Metallic Silver and Miss M J to put a big performance together.

Metallic Silver is a one-time winner on 11 attempts, with some decent form as of late. She has finished in the top-3 in five of her last six races.

Metallic Silver watched her top-3 run stopped on May 6. The mare finished 4th on May 6 in an $18,500 event and then went on a layoff.

Off a break and down in grade, this looks like a good chance for Metallic Silver. Miss M J has to threaten on these terms.

Miss M J is 1 for 8 in her career, finishing 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 8th, 8th in the last six attempts. She defeated Mrs. Krinkles by 9 ¼ lengths in a blowout in a $17,000 race on May 15.

Miss M J came back to go 8th in a $34,000 and $40,800 event. After a consistent run in a lower class, she struggled up against tougher foes.

She is back down far to $13,000 and should look nice on these terms. I’d back the No. 5 to win.

                              Purse:$12,000

Race 5 is a $12,000 event covering 6 furlongs on the dirt. Ronald Dale and Tiz Alluptome Now should be the ones to watch to win this one.

Ronald Dale is 4 for 29 in his career and should have a chance to score on Thursday afternoon. He’s just been too inconsistent. That’s been his downfall, but has the talent.

Ronald Dale has finished 2nd, 7th, 10th, 2nd in his previous four attempts. The gelding looked good in his most recent try on January 6.

He most recently placed 2nd behind Kats Second Silver by 2 lengths for a $12,000 purse. That was encouraging and will put him in the mix with a repeat effort.

Tiz Alluptome Now is 5 for 19 in his career, finishing 3rd, 4th, 3rd in the last three. He showed 3rd at Lone Star in his last race for a $30,000 purse on July 2.

Tiz Alluptome Now has regularly run around that mark at the $30,000 level. Prior to that loss, he was 4th. Moving down to $12,000 on a transfer to Sam Houston Race Park, this should be a manageable race to win.

                              Purse:$15,500

Race 6 covers 5 furlongs for a $15,500 purse on the turf. Look for Pick Up The Fone and Ignis should have a strong go in this one.

Pick Up The Fone is 5 for 28 in her career, with a stretch of 1st, 4th, 6th, 5th going into this one. In her most recent attempt, Pick Up The Fone was 5th for a $16,500 purse.

Before that run, Pick Up The Fone finished 6th on November 20 in a $36,600 event. That was a decent enough go up in class, though she still needs more to be competitive at the front.

Ignis is 6 for 23 in her career, with the mare finishing 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 1st in her previous four attempts. She is coming off a ¾ length win over Sweet Mary M for a $26,950 purse.

This was after placing 2nd behind Chikara by a head for a $19,800 prize on September 23. I’d look closely at the No. 2 for a win.
