#5 City Park He has beaten some of these in recent races as he now looks for the hat trick, and he should be in line for another dreamy trip while running right back with similar. Dangerous here.
#2 Reluctant Warrior He ran okay at 30/1 in that last one, and he's not really far off what it might take to get the better of a couple of runners who beat him that day. Second start off the break might produce a good one. Want him on the tickets.
#4 Run Rocket He has some tables to turn, but he flattered the top choice by coming right back to clear his first level allowance condition. Capable finisher, but the worry is another talented player will get the jump on him turning for home.
Race Summary City Park has a right to be tough with another good trip likely looming, and I'll try to get Reluctant Warrior in the picture as well while offering a little bit of upside here at a price.

Fair Grounds - Race #7
Picks Notes
#3 Whispered Kiss She ran well in her Ellis debut when hanging around for third after flashing some pace, and she might be quick enough to find the front again here in a race without a ton of other confirmed sprint speed.
#5 Chione She has some decent company lines throughout her four-race career, but she has given away ground in the stretch call of all four races and is probably overbet here.
#1 Anna Volante The form is still a bit underwhelming, but we may not have seen the best of her yet after a trio of Churchill Downs tries. Maybe she wakes up a bit here.
Race Summary Whispered Kiss is appealing as the likely pace in here, and she has a right to be tough if she doesn't take too much heat in the early going. Something like the 3/1 ML price would feel fair.

Fair Grounds - Race #8
Picks Notes
#7 Master McGrath He has only showed some mild finishing ability, but the form went in the right direction when he got some more ground to work with, and this 9f turf try might be right up his alley. He's probably a bit overlooked today.
#4 Defied He ran well in a couple turf tries here last season, but he's going to need to fire fresh off the May layoff. Think he could be sitting on something better off the bench today.
#6 High Deff He's one of the logical ones as he makes his local debut when last seen at Saratoga, and he has faced some decent company so far in his career. Worry he gets overbet on the move here.
Race Summary This race earns a pretty decent 44 Betmix Longshot Score, so it might be worth looking around for a bit of a price. Master McGrath might have some sneaky upside in this spot while trying a turf route for the first time, and maybe the surface switch allows him to show a bit more late.

Race Summary Ricottabkiddinme made a good middle move before flattening out in the stretch last week, but he should benefit from a livelier pace flow and could spring the upset if he picks up live cover. Play an 8-ALL exacta.

#4 Chrome Finish Tired going two turns in her last two on Tapeta and turns back to a one-turn mile on the main track; can be in close attendance throughout.
#2 Spin Rate Didn't fire last out at Churchill Downs and was claimed by the Jeff Hiles barn; was second twice and fourth once in three races leading up to his latest and can get in the game in his first since last May.
#5 Boldness Ran on for third going six furlongs and can benefit from the additional ground.
Race Summary Chrome Finish didn't take well to the synth and is likely improve with the surface and distance change.

Gulfstream Park - Race #3
Picks Notes
#3 Imperial King Was competitive in synth starts vs. higher levels at Presque Isle and Turfway, and in this evenly matched race he could have a flashback at a good price.
#6 Star Weaver Has been an solid closer and can be effective in his first off the claim by the Budhoo stable.
#1 New York Finest Was second going shorter last out and has been in enough good races to make him a player here.
Race Summary Imperial King has a decent closing move on occasion and has been in the mix on Tapeta; upset chance from off the pace.

Race Summary Friar Tuck has the speed to get to the front end and should be tough in this jump up in price.

Gulfstream Park Selections for January 21, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

We’re running on the racetrack Friday with a massive card that includes 15 racecourses for wagering in the US. You can find racing from the east to the west, though this isn’t the biggest stakes weekend. That’s reserved for next weekend at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach.

The Pegasus has a $3,000,000, $1,000,000, $500,000 race at Gulfstream Park next weekend. You aren’t going to find anything of the sort on Saturday. The feature race is $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (Gr. 3) at Fair Grounds. Fair Grounds Race Course has six races stakes races this afternoon.

Race 2 covers a mile on the dirt for a $24,000 purse. Look at Two Princes and Boldness as potential winners for this one.

Two Princes could be worth a look given proper value. He is a one-time winner through 11 assignments.

Two Princes has gone winless after winning a $39,000 event on February 13. That was a solid attempt, but hasn’t won in six races since then.

There were signs of encouragement after showing 3rd in his latest race on December 24. Two Princes showed 3rd in a $24,000 assignment. A similar race should put him close at the wire

Boldness has a win in eight outings, with a win seven races back. In his last three, he’s finished 3rd, 6th, 3rd. He is coming off 3rd on December 17 for a $24,000 purse.

Going up in distance to a mile from 6 furlongs should help plenty. He’s coming on late in races and running out of runway. This should be more to his liking.

Race 6 is a mile on the dirt for a $43,000 purse. Dubrovnik and Stormy Pattern should have a chance with a clean race.

Dubrovnik made his debut on December 23 and ran well enough. The $180,000 filly finished 4th in a $31,500 race. Well enough but not good enough for a $180,000 horse running in this class.

That said, Dubrovnik is open to improvement and may like a mile better than 6 furlongs. Stormy Pattern is likely to be his biggest nemesis in Race 6.

Stormy Pattern has placed 2nd in two career races. He placed 2nd behind Simplification by 16 ¾ lengths in a $45,000 race on October 23 then improved.
In his next and most recent outing, Stormy Pattern placed 2nd behind Markhamian by 4 ½ lengths in a $53,000 event. That was a progressive performance.

If Stormy Pattern runs a similar race, expect him to be tough versus this field.

Race 8 is a $36,000 run covering 6 furlongs at Gulfstream. Big Daddy Dave and Aeronaut have to be involved in the stretch run.

Aeronaut is 1 for 9 and has a chance in this one after going 1st, 3rd, 2nd in his previous three outings. He was a winner three races back in a $28,000 event by 2 ½ lengths.

That form was just right for Aeronaut after finishing 5th, 7th, 6th, 5th in tougher races. After the win, he showed 3rd on December 12 in a $36,000 event.

In his most recent race after that outing, Aeronaut came closer, placing 2nd behind Raise the Rent by 2 ¾ lengths in a $36,0000 assignment.

Big Daddy Dave should be tough from the outside. He has experience in big races, including a $200,000 stakes race on August 29, 2020 in the FTBOA Florida Sire Affirmed Stakes.

He placed 2nd behind Breeze On By by 7 ½ lengths in a pretty impressive effort. In four races, he’s gone 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd. In the last race after a layoff, Big Daddy Dave placed 2nd behind Uphold the Law by 4 lengths in a $46,000 event.

With a race to shake off the rust and down to $36,000, Big Daddy Dave should be tough to beat at this grade.

Santa Anita Park Selections for January 21, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

There’s a big horse racing card at the BetOnline racebook on Friday. This isn’t the biggest day for stakes racing, but there are nonetheless a lot of options for betting. BetOnline has at least 15 race tracks on the schedule Friday.

The stakes events are relatively quiet tomorrow, with the biggest race at Fair Grounds with the running of the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (Gr. 3). There are two graded races today, both Grade 3 events at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

I’m not too interested in the Fair Grounds card, but playing Gulfstream Park in Florida this afternoon. From Florida to the other side of the country in California at Santa Anita Park. Santa Anita has a $361,000 card with eight races on Friday.

Race 2 has duel potential between Sauls Call and Tizlightning. These two are in fine form at the moment and should have a strong presence in the stretch run.

Tizlightning is a perfect three-for-three after another win on January 14. I backed Tizlightning in that race and was rewarded with a $40,000 winning performance.

There was some luck with that win, though, as Con On the Run drifted and bumped resulting in a disqualification. Tizlightning was beaten at the wire by a neck, but awarded the win because of DQ.

Sauls Call is 3 for 8 and is in good form at the moment. He’s finished 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 1st in his previous five outings.

In his latest assignment, Sauls Call beat Im Still Thirsty by 6 lengths in a $39,000 event on December 5. This win was after showing 3rd on October 29 in a $36,000 race.

Based on recent form, Sauls Call appears to have a step on Tizlightning at the wire.

Race 5 covers a mile on the dirt for a $39,000 purse. Deservedly and Vetoed are going to be tough runners to beat in this one.

Deservedly has finished 3rd, 6th, 6th, 6th in four races in his career. In his most recent race, he finished 6th for a $70,000 purse.

It has been disappointing for Mark Glatt that Deservedly hasn’t done better at that level, so it’s down to $39,000. This is a $200,000 gelding related to 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. There are higher expectations.

Vetoed has finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 7th in four races. In his latest race, he finished 7th for a $70,000 purse after going 3rd on September 19 in a $46,000 event.

Bob Baffert’s trainee bobbled his last start so that put him well behind and unable to recover. If he has a cleaner start on Friday, this should be a winning opportunity for Vetoed on his home track.

Race 8 is the final race at Santa Anita Park on Friday. Pistachio Princess and Badger Kitten are high on my shortlist to win.

Pistachio Princess is 1 for 12 in her career and the filly has a good chance to get a second win today. She has finished 2nd, 2nd, 6th in her last three races.

Pistachio Princess placed 2nd in back-to-back races for a $28,000 purse and then a $30,000 purse most recently on November 14. She was a half-length off the pace at the wire in that one.

In her latest race, she disappointed finishing 6th for a $72,000 purse. Back down in class look for Pistachio Princess to do something at this level.

Badger Kitten is a one-time winner through seven assignments, finishing 8th, 1st, 4th in her previous three races. Two races back, Badger Kitten beat Twirling Grace by 2 ½ lengths in a $36,000 race.

The filly came back on January 7 to finish 4th in a $47,000 race. The jump in grade was acceptable given how she was running against weaker foes.

However, Badger Kitten is sliding down further than $36,000 to $31,000. This looks like a race for her to handle.

5^th race [Clm 8000, 6F] – (2) Bourbon Mission (D) set the pace on a sloppy track at Aqueduct when bet from 8-1 to 5-1 and now drops down to this lowest claiming level offered by NYRA. (6) Ninth Hour has tactical speed and returns to the Big A where last year he ran well in claimers at a higher level. He is back to the Noda barn and drops down to be a threat to win. (8) Fleet Warrior comes back from an August layoff, drops down in class, with past victories at Aqueduct. (7) Winning Drive gets an advantageous rider change to Manny Franco and also steps down the claiming ladder.

6^th race [NY, Clm 25000, 6F] – (3) Dream Bigger (C) was a winner last time in an open company claimer when he was bet down from 6-1 to 4-1 three weeks ago. (1) Golani Brigade returns to NY-bred competition and gets a rider change to Dylan Davis who won with him the last time he was on board. (6) Dark Money was claimed out of his last seven races and now is with Rudy Rodriguez who will move him back to this level where he raced at Saratoga and Belmont Park. He has five wins at the Big A. (2) P J Advantage has nine career wins and returns from a November layoff.

7^th race [OC50k/SAL50k, 6F] – (2) Rooski (C) was a winner of her last two starts including a similar spot to this one at Aqueduct where she rallied late and was bet down from 6-1 to 7-2. She will enter here for the optional $50,000 tag. (5) Tweaqued was a debut winner for a $40,000 tag last month at the Big A. (3) Lady Milagro was just a nose behind the Hot List horse after having the lead and setting the pace when moving from turf to dirt. (6) Rosemary Potatoes was a first-time winner in June at Monmouth in a maiden special weight at 2-1 odds. Off since then, she moves to the barn of Chad Summers.

8^th race [NY, Md 25000, 6F] – (11) Workingman’s Dude will cut back in distance and step down to this lowest maiden claiming level for NY-breds. As a 3-year-old, he will get Lasix for the first time. (10) Koosman has been off since October after two career starts and gets big changes – Lasix, blinkers on, a new gelding, and drops out of maiden special weights. (5) My Last Mission will also drop out of maiden special weights for the first time and get Lasix. (6) Silver Samurai has early speed which got him a third last time for a $40,000 tag and. like the others, gets Lasix.

Best bets: Rooski (7^th); Workingman’s Dude (8^th). Best value: Bourbon Mission (5^th); Dream Bigger (6^th).

2nd race – (5) Boldness missed by a little less than a length last time and can make amends here. (4) Chrome Finish returns to dirt and could be tough to catch in a small field. (3) King Slew should be a contender in this field. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5.

5th race – (6) Ingrassia has been running in stakes races and seems to have a class edge against these rivals. (8) Stolen Holiday was hurt by a wide trip last time and merits a long look here. (1) Take Charge Ro makes her second start after a layoff and can take a step forward. (2) Jezebel’s Kitten finished a neck ahead of Take Charge Ro last time and should be in the picture once again. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6-8. Doubles: 1-2-6-8 with 1-2-3.

6th race – (1) Dubrovnik rallied belatedly in his debut. Drops into a claimer while adding blinkers here and seems very well-spotted. (3) Machisto may turn in a better effort on dirt. (2) Stormy Pattern was second last time and could enjoy the slower fractions here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3.

8th race – (4) Democracy (B) got away to a slow start and was hurt by a wide trip. (6) Big Daddy Dave has speed from the outside and may not look back. (1) Cajun Commander switches to Saez and merits attention. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-6.

9th race – (7) Sister Nell rallied nicely to win her debut. Can make it two in a row in this spot. (1) Vandalia disappointed at Tampa Bay but can wake up here. (2) Sunstrike won on a synthetic surface and cannot be overlooked here. (3) Palmach returns to Tapeta and merits plenty of attention. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-7. Exactas: 1-7 over 2-3 and 2-3 over 1-7.
