Gulfstream Park Selections for January 26, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

BetOnline is racing on Wednesday with eight racecourses on the agenda. There is afternoon and racing under the lights today. Penn National Race Course and Charles Town have evening events on the card today.

We’re inching closer to the Pegasus World Cup on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. It’s been a while since we’ve had racing of this magnitude, so it will be good to see it back.

The biggest race is a $3,000,000 Grade 1 event, so that should be fun with some of the best horses on the track we’ve seen in a minute. There is also a $1,000,000 turf race and then an additional $500,000 race in the Pegasus.

Race 1 is a mile and 70 yards for a $23,000 purse. Take a look at what Cagua and Stormy Stella have to offer in this one.

Cagua is winless in seven attempts and should stand a decent chance of winning for the first time in this race. She has finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th in her previous three outings.

In her last race, Cagua finished 4th on December 31 for a $23,000 purse. This was after showing 3rd on December 10 in a $23,000 race.

She’s staying in the same class and should be competitive with a similar run, but look for Stormy Stella to give her problems.

Stormy Stella has finished 7th, 5th, 2nd, 3rd in her career. She continues to show improvement and should be good for a big effort on Wednesday.

In her last race, she showed 3rd in a $32,000 event for $32,000. That was a decent attempt after placing 2nd in the same class. Down by $10,000, expect Stormy Stella to do damage on these terms.

Race 2 covers 7 furlongs for a $22,000 purse on Wednesday. We likely see a duel between Pretty Rachel and Chez Paree on these terms.

Chez Paree is 5 for 18 and has finished 1st, 5th, 1st, 4th in her previous four attempts. She was a $21,000 winner two races back by a head in impressive form.

Following that outing, Chez Paree was 4th on September 26 for a $24,000 purse. That was a bit disappointing, but we know she’s capable of better.

Pretty Rachel should be tough to beat in Race 2. She has won seven of her last eight assignments. The only race she didn’t win was a stakes race.

In her latest outing, Pretty Rachel beat Rain in an impressive attempt for a $21,000 race. This was after going 10th in the Claiming Crown Glass Slipper Starter Stakes. That ended a six-race winning streak.

In her comfort zone in this one, expect Pretty Rachel to be the top contender to win Race 2.

Race 7 covers 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt for a $39,000 purse. This looks like it should be a competitive race for a solid prize. Expect Leviosa and Dignified to run a tough race this afternoon.

Dignified is a one-time winner through five events. He has finished 2nd, 1st, 3rd in his previous three races. Dignified struck two races back with a $38,000 win by a head on November 20.

In his next and most recent race, Dignified showed 3rd on December 29 for a $39,000 purse. Leviosa was the horse that stuck the landing in that attempt.

The No. 4 beat Blame It On by a neck to win the top prize. She has finished 4th, 4th, 1st, 1st in her last four assignments. Leviosa is looking for the hat-trick and should get it done.

She is coming off a 3 ½ length win for a $30,000 purse on December 29, which came after the victory against Dignified. This looks like a good spot for another Leviosa win versus this weak field.

Ought to be given a shot for this event if only for the decent Equibase Speed Figure put up in the last race. POWERS OUT - Has very strong Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. He looks very strong in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point.

STACIAS RUBY - Just check out her latest speed rating, 62. That one fits in this bunch. The most dangerous animal in racing is the lone speed horse. If they let her get away early they probably won't catch her. This filly likes to be near the lead. Today's event is a shorter distance and should increase her chances of winning. Ranks highest in earnings per race. A strong try in today's race will boost the lifetime total. Horse has improved at least two speed rating points in last 2 races. I look for that trend to continue today. BAYOU MELODY - Panici rode this entrant for the initial time last time out and comes right back this time. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here. Trainer O'Connell moves this one to a lower level to face weaker company. Look for a solid effort in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 ARTIFICIAL INTELL (ML=2/1), #7 ULTIMATE BREEZE (ML=9/2), #3 GOSSIPING (ML=6/1),

ARTIFICIAL INTELL - Doesn't seem to have enough good aspects to support the value. ULTIMATE BREEZE - This filly hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last couple of efforts. 9/2 is not worth it for any horse in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint event recently. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed fig. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list. GOSSIPING - Should have at least finished in the money in the last two months in a short distance event to be worth it at minimal odds in a sprint.

1st race – (4) Stormy Stella (C) dropped from even money to 1-2 and rallied late for third. Should like the added distance. (5) Cagua was hurt by a wide trip but can fare better here. (6) Splicer didn’t fire in a sprint but should rebound here. (7) Brain Trust may prefer Tapeta. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-7.


4th race – (7) Blame It On Rose missed by a neck last time and makes amends here on Tapeta. (2) Princess Cupid will be a threat in her first start off the Maragh claim. (5) Chacalosa won last time and is worth a look in this field. (3) Mount Sinai will welcome a return to a claimer. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-7. Doubles: 2-3-5-7 with 4-5-6-9.


5th race – (6) Barbara returns to turf and could be tough to catch. (4) Jaimie’s Warrior may like turf and should not be overlooked. (9) All in Jest had a rough trip last time and might perk up here. (5) Zambak could be a factor in a claimer. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-9.


7th race – (4) Leviosa (C) was bet down from 3-1 to 2-1 and rolled to a second straight win. Can make it three straight here. (2) Dignified had a troubled trip last time and should be the main threat. (5) Peachy Weachy makes her first start for D’Angelo and merits respect. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5. Doubles: 2-4-5 with 1-4-6-8.


8th race – (1) Miss Delicious returns off the Maker claim and deserves top billing. (4) Mongolian Mission was rank last time but should turn in a better try today. A BIT OF HARLOW - This should be an easier task than what he was asked last time out against 'open' company. Ran in the last race against a higher rated class of horses at Charles Town. The move down the class scale should suit him well. While the finish was disappointing, this race horse made a good stretch move in the last race at Charles Town. Have to give a better effort right here in this race. MEGALODON'SREVENGE - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class; has the class ability to make his presence felt. This horse brings in a lot of cash per race around the track. Tops in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 CAYATANO (ML=9/5), #5 GHOST MINE (ML=4/1),

CAYATANO - December 11th is the last time we've seen this gelding around. Have to be a little bit leery. GHOST MINE - Hard to put your cash on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as frequently as this entrant does. No speed in this race to help this sustainer's hopes. The rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class figure of today's contest. Mark this horse as a likely underlay.

St. Bonaventure has been a disappointment this season while George Mason is succeeding expectations under first-year head coach Kim English.
This is reflected in the point spread records of the two teams. The Bonnies are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games, while George Mason is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 home games.
St. Bonaventure looked terrible two games ago in a 68-50 road loss to Dayton. The Bonnies did follow that up with a 64-56 victory against Duquesne. St. Bonaventure got away with playing its starters for nearly the entire game against Duquesne. Only two bench players saw action for the Bonnies and that was for just a combined 13 minutes.
George Mason is the deeper team and also the more accurate shooting squad. The Patriots are 5-2 in their last seven games with one of those defeats occurring to Kansas, 76-67, on the road where George Mason was 19 1/2-point 'dogs.
Back in November, George Mason upset Maryland on the road. The Terrapins have defeated Rutgers and Michigan in their last two games.
So the Patriots are more than capable.
