Sunday Seoul & Busan: Segye Ilbo Cup Day Race-By-Race Preview (January 30)

The 2022 Stakes race season gets underway at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday afternoon with the twentieth running of the Segye Ilbo Cup. A field of fourteen that includes several Group winners will contest the Listed event over the sprint distance of 1200M, which returns to the calendar after having to be pandemically postponed in 2021.

The Segye Ilbo Cup will be run for the first time since 2020 when Simjangui Godong won. Do Kki Blade, who was 3rd that day, returns (Pic: KRA)

Raon First – the only filly or mare in the race – is the probable favourite, coming off her comfortable win over her distaff contemporaries in t Jeju Governor’s Cup at 1400M in December, but she has beaten the males at class 1 level too and with a weight allowance and a great draw she may prove hard to catch.

2020 Owners’ Association Trophy winner East Jet also lines up and will be a big danger while Busan’s challenge is led by Classic winner Touch Star Man and the speedy Doctor Carson. The Segye Ilbo Cup is race 9 on the 11-race program at Seoul Racecourse which runs from 10:45 to 18:00. There are also 6 races at Busan from 12:00 to 16:40. All betting locations are open but attendance must be pre-booked through the MyCard app. Evidence of up to date vaccination against Covid-19 is required. Here are the previews:

        Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies in the opener with no fewer than ten of the twelve racing for the very first time. One of those first-timers goes on top in the shape of (5) HAMPYEONG NABI, who caught the eye in a heat, leading almost the entire way around before crossing the line in 2nd in a fast time. She draws nicely here and appears set for a bold showing first up. The two with experience both raced adequately enough on debut to suggest they should be in the frame here. (7) MENI SPEAR came home 4th on debut on Christmas Day at this distance having previously won a trial while (8) DOLBAE debuted a day later and ran 5th in a fair time. With natural improvement both can go closer this time around. Returning to the newcomers, (11) MENI ACE and (4) SONGAM NURI trialed up together and could be the best of the rest.
Selections (5) Hampyeong Nabi (7) Meni Spear (8) Dolbae (11) Meni Ace
        Next Best 4, 11
        Fast Start 4, 5, 7, 8

        Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Small field as it’s restricted to sales graduates. Moon Se-young climbing aboard (6) FLYING ATHENA will prick some ears. He’s run adequately for 6th in both starts so far, last time running on over 1200M. Expect him to be up front early here and he could well break through. The primary danger is set to be (3) NAUI NARA. She’s improved across three outings so far, culminating with a 3rd place over 1400M on December 25th when she was prominent throughout. Expect her to be challenging for the early lead and to be in this a long way. Draw a line through the latest effort from (5) BIG ENERGY when he failed to settle from a wide draw. He had run consistently prior to that though and is worth another chance here. (1) MILLION QUEEN didn’t do much on debut but finished midfield and may improve from the inside gate. (9) GEOLJAK MAN has a 3rd place to his name and that’s enough to bring him into the calculations today.
Selections (6) Flying Athena (3) Maui Nara (5) Big Energy (1) Million Queen
        Next Best 9, 7
        Fast Start 3, 4, 6, 7

        Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

        (1) GRAND STAR beat three of these on his way to 3rd place at this distance on December 19th when handy throughout. That was his best finish to date in nine attempts and from a good draw on the inside, he can sit handy again and this time break through. (3) DIVINE POWER has raced adequately in three attempts at this distance, posting fair times. He generally settles midfield or worse and then runs on and should get past plenty here. (4) GEUMSEONG MAN comes up in trip following a much-improved 2nd place when stepped up to 1400M on December 25th, beating a couple of today’s rivals in the process and the additional distance may suit even more. (11) APPLE MINT and (8) M J STORM among others to enter the calculations.
Selections (1) Grand Star (3) Divine Power (4) Geumseong Man (11) Apple Mint
        Next Best 8, 2
        Fast Start 1, 5, 7, 10

        Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Busan’s opener is a maiden for three-year-olds with four of the twelve making their racecourse debuts. We’ll tentatively side with experience as (7) JEONGDEUN-RO ran a solid 3rd on debut at this distance on January 10th, sitting handy all the way and completing the course in a fair time, albeit well back behind a good winner. She should have come on for that. Likely favourite is one of the first timers. (5) STAR ACE sat handy in his trial, finishing 2nd in a decent time. The Kim Young-kwan/You Hyun-myung combination is bound to make punters take note and from a good draw, there is no reason why he can’t win first-up. (12) INDIE MAGIC won a trial and while the draw does him no favours, in this company he can have claims first up. (1) GASOK DAY was 5th on debut in what was a monumentally slow race at the distance. He is surely capable of quicker and can improve from the inside gate. (9) SUNSHINE STAR maybe best of the rest.
        Selections (7) Jeongdeun-Ro (5) Star Ace (12) Indie Magic (1) Gasok Day
        Next Best 9, 11
        Fast Start 1, 5, 7, 12

        Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

She’s yet to break through in thirteen starts to date but (6) GOLDEN BADGE has a strong of near-misses and has also run a fast time at this distance. She comes in having come from well back to run 2nd over 1400M on Boxing Day and has solid claims here. So too (7) SARYEONI FIRST, who won over 1200M at class 6 level last November before finishing 3rd at this class and distance on December 12th. He will probably settle midfield and run on and shouldn’t be far away. (11) ADELE NARAE took to this distance well when stepped up to it on January 9th and running 2nd, ahead of a couple of today’s rivals. He can build on that today. (9) BRAVO SOCKS and (3) RUFFIAN PARK are others who can have designs on the places.
Selections (6) Golden Badge (7) Saryeoni First (11) Adele Narae (9) Bravo Socks
        Next Best 3, 12
        Fast Start 2, 4, 7, 11

        Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

        (10) KING SATURDAY will be one of the hotter favourites of the weekend. He has finished 3rd and 2nd in his two starts so far at 1000M and 1200M and while he comes up in trip again here, he should be exiting class 6 with a win. (6) DROMOS ran fairly for 4th at her latest outing over 1200M and also has a 2nd at that distance to her name. She generally works home well, and the extended trip may be in her favour today. (12) NAMYANG CHEOLLI improved significantly when tried at this distance at start number three on December 24th when she led for much of the way, ultimately finishing in 2nd place in front of a couple of today’s rivals. The draw does her no favours here but with a touch of luck early, she can be in the finish. (1) QUEEN’S DAERO and (4) RUN AND GUN others to take into consideration.
        Selections (10) King Saturday (6) Dromos (12) Namyang Cheolli (1) Queen’s Daero
        Next Best 4, 13
        Fast Start 6, 8, 11, 12

        Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

        (4) RAON THE ARIA was an emphatic all the winner over 1000M on her third start on December 12th. The Musket Man filly comes up in class and up in distance today but this half-sister to current phenom Raon The Fighter, should have far too much again. Plenty of other talent in this race though. (12) POWER K was also a big winner on debut, sitting handy and then running on to score comfortable at 1000M on December 11th. While he may not be able to beat the favourite, he should certainly be able to measure up at this class. So too (3) SILVER STAR, who took four attempts to break though but did so in fine style on December 18th, sitting midfield and then running on in a good time for the distance. She draws well and can go close. (7) BLACK MASK is up in class having run 2nd in two fast races at 1000M and should be competitive. (11) LAST PUNCH another up in class from a debut win with improvement possible.
Selections (4) Raon The Aria (12) Power K (3) Silver Star (7) Black Mask
        Next Best 11, 2
        Fast Start 4, 7, 9, 12

        Busan Race 3: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Big competitive field here. (6) SANGSEUNG BOY was an all the way winner on debut over 1000M on Christmas Eve, winning by plenty. He comes up in both class and distance today but from a good draw looks to be the one to beat again. (12) SEOBU QUEEN is yet to win in fourteen starts but consistently goes close and has the fastest time among any of these for the distance. She tends to go back and run on so the draw shouldn’t be too much of a concern and while she may find one or two too quick again, she can be in the finish. (1) OCEAN STORM has run 2nd in both starts so far at class 6 level to come up in class today. The latest was at this distance in a good time when she led almost the entire way around and from the inside gate, she can measure up here. (4) SHY DRAGON beat Ocean Storm when winning two starts back over 1000M and while she failed to make an impact at class and distance last start, she draws much better today and can improve. (2) MORNING THUNDER is experienced at this level and should be in the finish too.
Selections (6) Sangseung Boy (12) Seobu Queen (1) Ocean Storm (4) Shy Dragon
        Next Best 2, 13
        Fast Start 1, 3, 6, 10

        Seoul Race 6: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

It’s hard to look past (7) CHOEGANG QUEEN here. A winner of two from seven, she has never finished outside the top four and has consistently run fast times. She has won at this distance before and can sit handy here and then prove too strong late on. (2) MOST SPEED was a fast winner at class and distance two starts back when coming from off the pace. She then had a hard time in the Jeju Governor’s Cup over 1400M, but this looks a more suitable assignment, and she can go close. (4) LUCKY JAESAN returns to action after seven months out. She had shown plenty of ability before the layoff and while she offered few clues in her trial and will probably need this, she may be worth an each-way chance. (12) POWER TOWER has the fastest time at the distance and likewise, could be one to go for at odds. (8) BEST TIME among plenty of these with placing chances.
Selections (7) Choegang Queen (2) Most Speed (4) Lucky Jaesan (12) Power Tower
        Next Best 8, 6
        Fast Start 2, 4, 9, 11

        Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Small but competitive field. (4) DOCTOR CAESAR ran a strong 3rd in the Gimhae Mayor’s Cup last October. True, he has been a beaten favourite in two subsequent starts, but he comes up steeply in trip today and looks an interesting prospect. Expect him on pace with every chance of going all the way. (8) UNJU EUTTEUM comes up in both class and trip following a good win over 1400M on December 19th when leading most of the way. He’ll be on pace or handy here and is another one who may be suited by the extended trip. (6) SUNLIGHT BOY has raced at this distance already, recording a strong 4th place two start back. He is another front-runner, and an apprentice claim here keeps his weight low. (9) CHEONGDAM DRIVE was a slightly surprising class and distance winner at his last start on Christmas Eve and while he comes up a full 4.5kg in the weights, can’t be ruled out of going close again. (5) RUN FIGHTER among others in the frame.
Selections (4) Doctor Caesar (8) Unju Eutteum (6) Sunlight Boy (9) Cheongdam Drive
        Next Best 5, 2
        Fast Start 1, 4, 6, 8

        Seoul Race 7: Class 4 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

        (10) SARYEONI QUEEN has eight top-three finishes from nine starts so far and comes in having won at this class over 1400M on December 18th when settling midfield and running on. She comes up in distance to two turns for the first time and up significantly in weight as well but has every chance of scoring again. (11) ON POINT also tackles 1800M for the first time but his last two efforts have been at 1700M when he has finished 2nd and 3rd, both times beating a couple of today’s rivals. He is tactically versatile so the draw shouldn’t be too disadvantageous, and he will be a big danger. (9) THUNDER WIND was slightly disappointing at his latest appearance but can be given another chance here while (3) COLJOY can mix his form but draws nicely here and can be in the placing frame. (2) WINNER TEMPLAR has the fastest time among those who have raced at the distance before and is another who can be competitive.

        Busan Race 5: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

        (8) COOL GUY beat three of today’s rivals on his way to a fine class and distance win on January 7th hen he sat midfield before taking up the running in the early part of the straight. He has never finished outside the top-three in ten races and while he comes up a full 3kg in the weights he may take some beating again. (3) HANEUL ULLIM too enters a class and distance winner having prevailed over plenty of today’s rivals when coming from off the pace to score on Christmas Eve. He comes up even more in the weights – 4kg – but from a much better draw can be in the hunt once more. (6) DUNCAN was 2nd in that Christmas Eve race but while he comes up in the weights too, he meets Haneul Ullim 1.5kg better off and can be a danger. (13) FREEDOM KNIGHT and (5) POKPUNG EONDEOK among plenty of others with at least placing claims.
Selections (8) Cool Guy (3) Haneul Ullim (6) Duncan (13) Freedom Knight

        Fast Start 4, 6, 9, 13

        Seoul Race 8: Class 3 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

        (9) CHIEF INDY comes in having run in all three legs of the Triple Crown, finished 3rd in the KRA Cup Mile and a very close 2nd to Heat Yegam in the Minister’s Cup. He carries plenty of weight today, but he has plenty of class and he should win this. His main rival is last year’s Korean Oaks winner (7) CHOEGANG BLACK. She followed up that Classic win with 2nd place in Gyeonggi Governor’s Cup to prove herself the top three-year-old filly of last year and with a big weight advantage here, it is not impossible that she could challenge and even beat Chief Indy. The 2020 Oaks winner (4) UARYUNG returns to action after almost six months off. She trialed up well and while 1800M first-up is a big ask, might be worth some speculation at an each-way price. (8) HWANGGEUM HAE and (5) CHEONJI YEOGEOL are others with placing claims.
Selections (9) Chief Indy (7) Choegang Black (4) Uaryung (8) Hwanggeum Hae
        Next Best 5, 11
        Fast Start 4, 6, 7, 10

        Busan Race 6: Class 1 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

        (2) BARBARIAN will be hot favourite here. His recent work has been at staying trips and he comes in having beaten plenty of these over a mile on December 26th. He has won at this trip in the past, albeit at lower levels and from a great draw, he has every chance today. (1) SSONSAL will be available at an each-way or even better price. He has won some very good races at this trip, and we can disregard his last start over a mile. He comes up a full 7.5kg under handicap conditions but from the inside gate, don’t rule him out. (9) MACH TITAN benefits from the weights here. He was an excellent winner over this trip at class 2 level two starts back and while only 6th behind Barbarian at a mile last time out, should be closer today. (8) MIRACLE DREAMING has been very competitive of late and ran 4th to Barbarian last time out at a mile. He likes to lead, and the shorter journey today should suit. (3) ACE KOREA is always there or thereabouts, is nicely drawn today, and should be in contention.
Selections (2) Barbarian (1) Ssonsal (9) Mach Titan (8) Miracle Dreaming
        Next Best 3, 6
        Fast Start 2, 5, 8, 9

Seoul Race 9: Class Open (1200M) “Segye Ilbo Cup” (KOR-L) Allowance / KRW 300 Million

The first Stakes race of the year. (2) RAON FIRST is a hugely talented mare who has won from 1200M to 1800Mwith her latest being a G# score in the Jeju Governor’s Cup over 1400M albeit against fellow filles and mares. She likes to race forward, is beautifully drawn here and is the likely favourite. (6) EAST JET can have his latest start disregarded when he matched pace with Raon The Fighter, who blitzed the G3 field. He is very consistent, loves the 1200M and is better suited here. The weight is no problem, he can run fast times. He will be on pace and is right in this. (8) MENI HERO is a highly versatile galloper who was a surprise winner of the Busan Owners’ Cup at G3 level over a mile at his last start in November. He is back in distance but won twice at this distance, albeit in more ordinary company than today. Don’t dismiss (1) ICE PUNCH, who is still eligible for class 2 racing but takes his chance, nonetheless. He is capable of fast times and very well drawn with Moon Se Young aboard. (3) TOUCH STAR MAN will be very well backed. He comes significantly back in trip, but punters won’t underestimate the Kim Young-kwan/Lim Sung-sil combination and it would be no surprise to see him in this from a great draw.
Selections (2) Raon First (6) East Jet (8) Meni Hero (1) Ice Punch
        Next Best 3, 11
        Fast Start 2, 3, 6, 7

        Seoul Race 10: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

        (10) CHUNJI GWANGPUNG is a lightly raced three-year-old who was keen at his last start when he led over 1200M and battled on well for 2nd place. The extra distance should be ok and with an easier tempo, he has every chance of going all the way this time. (11) BENCAL PRINCESS is a filly who spent the latter half of 2021 running with the cream of the two-year-olds and may appreciate the drop back into shallower waters here. She is yet to run at further than 1200M but has plenty of potential and while this is her first race since the end of October, shouldn’t be dismissed. (1) UNICORN BRAVO has struck trouble in his last two starts so it may pay to disregard those and go on prior solid class and distance winning from. He is nicely drawn again and worth another chance. (5) TOUGH MAN has fair recent form and gets a good draw today which should enable him to get his favoured forward position. (3) GYORYONGDEUKSU another in the placing frame.
Selections (10) Chunji Gwangpung (11) Bencal Princess (1) Unicorn Bravo (5) Tough Man
        Next Best 3, 14
        Fast Start 3, 5, 6, 10

        Seoul Race 11: Class 3 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

        (2) MIGHTY GEE looks the one to beat here. He has good consistency and was a fair 3rd last start when favourite at class and distance when midfield and running on in the straight. He is nicely drawn and should be very competitive. (6) BYEOLNARA JILJU is an on-pace galloper who has run some very solid times in his short career. He draws well and has every chance. (4) MORNING HILL was a winner over this distance at class 4 level two starts back before running 4th alongside many of these on December 26th. Tactically versatile, he is also capable of running good times and can’t be discounted here. (14) DAEJIUI YEOIN is a winner of six from nine including at this class over 1400M two starts back. The draw is not in his favour today, but don’t rule out. (5) MUNHAK FIRE another in the frame.
Selections (2) Mighty Gee (6) Byeolnara Jilju (4) Morning Hill (14) Daejiui Yeoin
        Next Best 5, 11

SHRP: Houston Racing Festival All-Stakes P3 January 30
            By J.N. Campbell

Sam Houston Race Park Picks - Sunday, January 30, 2022

            Race 1: 3-6-5-2
            Race 2: 5-4-9-6
            Race 3: 7-4-12-6

            Race 7: 3-4-2-7
            Race 8: 8-4-7-6
            Race 9: 2-7-12-5
            Race 10: 3-1-5-7
            Race 11: 6-4-11-8
**Most Likely Winner: Stolen Base #7 (Race 6)**
**Best Value: Logical Myth #8 (Race 8)**

            ALL-STAKES PICK 3 … Low Takeout 12%

LEG 1: (Race 6: Turf, 1 Mile, Bob Bork Texas Turf Mile S. $200k, 3)

It is Houston Racing Festival time, and that means a good mix of “Non-G” and “Graded” events on what is the only Sunday of the SHRP Meet. Kicking off a nice juicy Pick 3, we are going to the John B. Connally Turf Course, and the next installment of what is now called the Bob Bork Texas Turf Mile S. A $200k affair for 3-yr-old colts, this “BT” was added to the program a few years back. Some very solid runners have routed through this contest, and will so again. When it comes to shipping into Sam Houston, no one has had more success than conditioner Mike Maker. He has a trio of competitors drawn-in for this contest. Each of them … Pure Panic #6, Stolen Base #7, and Grantham #10 all look stout in their own way. Of these, I am inclined to back Geo Franco’s ride, ole #7, because he is on a colt, I particularly liked in the Bourbon S. (G2) back at Keeneland in October. There is no question that this son of Bodemeister was up against a tough crowd in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), not only because of all the “gate issues” and “betting shenanigans,” but also with such a competitive field. Coming back to the work tab, and entering into this spot all looks promising to me. I would not say that Franco is a Gaffalione or Rosario on the grass, but he could be perfectly adequate trying to get this late-running 3-yr-old into position. I think he has a big chance, and I will be “Singling” him in this spot to get things rolling. Onward and upward …

            Selections: 7 (Single)

            LEG 2: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 1/16th, Houston Ladies Classic S. (G3), $400k, F&M 4+)

The “feature” on this Sunday racing in Houston is this challenging HLC. In the past, this race has been the jumping off point for some impressive careers. Letruska proved last year that you can come through the Grade 3, and then elevate your game further. My sense is that Pauline’s Pearl #3, a Stonestreet Stables homebred, is the horse to beat. She has the back class that others do not, and Steve Asmussen has her in the proper spot to start 2022. The daughter of Tapit shipped out to Hobbs, New Mexico last time out for the Zia Park Oaks, and she did not disappoint against 5 others. Her tactical ability is strong too, and that just adds to the argument that the HOF trainer has the chance to add another HLC to his haul. With Joel Rosario in-town to ride, she will probably have her way this crowd. For those reasons, I think a “Single” is in order. Moving right along …

            Selections: 3 (Single)

            LEG 3: (Race 8: Turf, 1½, John B. Connally Turf Cup S. (G3), $200k, 4+)

Not too long ago, the John B. Connally Turf Cup switched from 1 1/8th to a distance test of 1½. It was a shrewd decision, and kept those fickle folks who assign the “graded” status at the G3-level, from dropping this one down. Always an expansive field, this year’s edition is once again fairly deep. I have saved enough money along the way in the Pick 3 to make a significant investment. When it comes to a top selection, I want to take a hard look at Mike Maker once again, and his entry, Tide of the Sea #3. I think this 6-yr-old is well-bred by the now deceased English Channel, and has the background to take on this group. Gaffalione is a strong grass rider, and can make a difference late in the game. With an overall record of 19/5-5-1, he looks to add to the haul … I want to include all of Maker’s entries, in order to make the sweep … so, let’s have Malthael #7, Ajourneytofreedom #11, and the AE, Parrot Head #12. That should help us gets this one home … Just for good measure, I also want to use Joe Sharp’s Logical Myth #8. That is a horse that scratched the other day at the Fair Grounds, and instead is shipping into Sam Houston. I like the spot quite a bit, and the hot-riding Adam Beschizza is rolling into H-Town to try on a surface he excels at. When it comes down to it, this will be my top play! Let’s go cash a nice low-takeout, All-Stakes Pick 3 ticket!

            Selections: 3/7/8/11/12 (5-Deep)

Kenny Peck's Sam Houston pick six play for Sunday, January 30, 2022

Hollis (right) and Sky Ride dead heat in Stonerside Sprint Stakes at Sam Houston
Coady PhotographyFirst post for Sam Houston racing is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Kenny Peck provides his analysis, selections and suggested ticket structure for Sunday's Pick 6 at Sam Houston.

RACE 6: BLOODLINE (#1) has the right running style for the expected race flow and he’s trained by Brad Cox, who has decent numbers with horses trying the grass for the first time; using KAELY’S BROTHER (#8) for the same reason. DOWN COLD (#5) merits respect on the strength of the Beyer he earned in his first start on the turf last time out. STOLEN BASE (#7) is the one to beat in his first start since the BC Juvenile Turf. GRANTHAM (#10) draws wide but has the speed to get position from the start. RED RUN (#11) didn’t run badly in his first try on the green, two back, at Kentucky Downs; warrants a look in this wide-open Texas Turf Mile (6).

RACE 7: Not going to try to beat PAULINE’S PEARL (#3), who makes her return from the layoff for trainer Steve Asmussen in this Houston Ladies Classic. She fits the race well as a closer, as there’s a fair amount of speed in this field, and if she can approach the figure she posted when she last ran in November she will be tough to beat (1).

RACE 8: HIERARCHY (#2) ran well for the place behind TIDE OF THE SEA (#3) in his latest try at this distance, in the Japan Cup at Laurel, and he figures to get ample pace to chase in the John B. Connally Turf Cup. Tide of the Sea has speed but can also rate, which should lead to a favorable trip. MALTHAEL (#7) merits respect based on the figure and effort at this distance three back, at Keeneland (3).

Build your ticket with DRF Bets TicketMaker here.

RACE 9: DIRECT DIAL (#3) has the tactical speed to sit a good trip behind a lively pace in this Stonerside Sprint; best Beyers put him in the mix. MOJO MAN (#8) may have needed that last race, his first off the layoff; note the improvement last year at this time when he made his second start back following a break. MR MONEY BAGS (#10) is best when on the lead but he can also rate and make a run in the lane. GIVE IT EVERYTHING (#12) is widest but he has good speed, which should enable him to get position (4).

RACE 10: CATCH A BID (#7) was with the pace in that short field last time out but she can be expected to come from further off the pace in this Jersey Lilly, which features a good amount of speed. BARISTA (#11) was also close-up from the start last time and made a run at the lead before tiring in the Pago Hop, a race where the speeds were run over by the closers late; improvement likely with that race under her belt (2).

RACE 11: Looking to beat Public Information, who benefited from favorable race flows in all of his three recent starts where he ran 1st or 2nd. HORN OF PLENTY (#2) goes two turns on the grass for the first time but if he can rate off the pace and make one run he should fall into a nice trip. SWEET MEDICINE (#5) stretches out off a sprint prep in his first start off the layoff and he fits with these based on his best turf route Beyers (2).

              THE PLAY: 1, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 / 3 / 2, 3, 7 / 3, 8, 10, 12 /7, 11 / 2, 5 = $144 Ticket

                Today’s Racing Tips – January 30th

There are two meetings in the UK on Sunday, with jump action from Fontwell and Sedgefield (rare blank day in Ireland). There
are no less than six handicaps on the Sedgefield card, with the big betting race likely to be the 3m2f handicap chase at 3.30pm.

Hughie Morrison’s maiden hurdler has caught two tartars over timber so far, finishing second to Hermes Boy in December at Exeter and filling the same spot behind the hight class Dubrovnik Harry on New Years Day at that venue. He will relish the decent ground expected at Fontwell on Sunday (quite a freegoing sort who needs settling and posted his best bumper effort on fast ground), and the promising 7lb claimer Nathan Brennan knows him very well.

Nigel Twiston-Davies handicapper has been very highly tried this winter in warm company, shaping really well in the Becher chase at Aintree one run back. He ran a lot better than the bare result at Ascot last time under a negative ride, and this represents quite a dramatic drop down in class with ground conditions to suit.

                  By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s round out the week in a good way today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Oaklawn Park for the late sequence on the card! We will also have full card selections for Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s see if we can get this home today.

Below is our free Middle Pick 4 for Oaklawn Park:

                  Oaklawn Park January 30, 2022

                  Race 6: Claiming

#1 Mr. Dougie Fresh drops down in class for this one after a close third place effort against tougher last time out. #12 Tomato Bill will also be taking a big drop down in class for this race.

                  freestar

#4 Purrfect Mistress drops down in claiming price today after struggling against much tougher horses last time out. #7 Beyond the Hype was fourth at a similar level to this one last time out.

                  Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#11 Dolly Dimple should run a much improved race today with this being her second start off of the layoff. #12 Big On Broadway was second last time out in a similar race, which was her first start off of the layoff.

                  Race 9: Maiden Special Weight

#6 Sweet Tea runs for Larry Jones after a poor debut; however, his horses usually improve in their second starts. #5 Magic Maps will debut in this spot for Asmussen, who is having another strong Oaklawn Park meet.

                    Jeff Siegel's Analysis/Workout Commentary - 1-30-22

                    January 30, 2022

“What You Need to Know” - Santa Anita
By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TPC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
                    *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 individual
algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100 point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

                    Single: 2-Mo Gold

Forecast: Mo Gold ran a winning race in defeat when worn down late in a sharp debut performance over the local lawn earlier this month. The son of Uncle Mo was off slowly from the rail, rushed up to establish the pace, stayed on well through the lane but missed while more than five lengths clear of the rest. A similar effort today should be more than good enough to graduate, though at 6/5 on the morning line he won’t be offering much in the way of wagering value.

                    Notable Workouts:

                    Gustav (January 16, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.3hg). Grade: B-
Displayed some quickness early while well several lengths clear of Arrabiata (same time) under mild coaxing but was caught late although not under much pressure to be head-and-head after five furlongs, splits of :24.2, :36.2, :48.3 and 1:01.3 for D. O’Neill. Seems to have some early speed, hard to gauge how much quality. Should be plenty fit by now.

                    Single: 2-All Dialed In

Forecast: All Dialed In is listed as the 4/5 morning line favorite in this shallow maiden sprint for older fillies and mares. A recent work was disappointing, so she’s not the type of a short-priced choice we’d care to take, but on paper she’s a standout in a race lacking a viable alternative. You can play her if you’d like as rolling exotic single, but simply passing the race might be the better way to go.

                    Notable Workouts:

All Dialed In (January 21, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.4hg). Grade: C+
Clearly best inside Exclamation (5f, 1:02hg) but went slower than given and was getting out every step of the way, splits of :24.4, :36.4, :49.1 and 1:02 flat. Form isn’t bad but it’ll be hard to have confidence in her based on this drill. Question mark.

Use (in order of preference): 4-Escape Route; 7-See Through It

Forecast: Escape Route (TOC=5/2; ML=3-1) has been stuck on seconds lately (four straight) but his numbers are fast and consistent so he should be able to win this condition eventually, perhaps today. As a son of Hard Spun from a mare by Speightstown he’s certainly bred to move up on grass, and at this extended sprint trip the M. Glatt-trained colt should be able settle in mid-pack and then produce a winning late bid. F. Prat got to known him last time out and stays aboard. See Though It (TOC=3-1; ML=4-1) isn’t as fast on speed figures as our top pick but projects to settle into an ideal stalking position outside and have his chance from the quarter pole home. We’ll have tickets including both in rolling exotic play with the main push going to Escape Route.

                    Notable Workouts:

Escape Route (January 15, Santa Anita, 4f, :50.2h). Grade: C+
In blinkers, went off slowly while appearing a bit disinterested but then picked it up a bit through the lane when asked mildly, splits of :25.1 and :50.2 for M. Glatt. Never much of a worker, saves his best for the afternoon.

City Rage (January 21, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.2hg). Grade: B-
Ridden out bit most of the way while slightly second best with the classy Collusion Illusion (same time, breezing), splits of :24.2, :36 flat, :47.4 and 1:00.2, okay work for M. Glatt. Been away since May, might not be totally cranked up just yet.

Use (in order of preference: 2-La Pulcinela; 3-Flat Out Joy

Forecast La Pulcinela (TOC=Evens; ML=2-1) has the route-to-sprint angle we like and is dropping from a much tougher starter’s allowance $25,000 affair into this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 seller. She can be quite comfortable as a late-running sprinter and at this six and one-half furlong trip the daughter of Flatter looks capable of producing the last run. Flat Out Joy (TOC=5/2; ML=5/2), in the frame in her last pair, always has been content to finish second or third (10 times) rather than win (twice) but will be nicely placed on or near the lead throughout and should remain a major factor throughout. We’ll give La Pulcinela the edge on top while including both in rolling exotic play.

Use (in order of preference): 2-Shoppingforpharoah; 3-Island of Love

Forecast: Shoppingforpharoah (TOC=3/5; ML=3-1) is a need-the-lead type and projects to be strolling on the front end without anything in the field likely to pressure her. The daughter of American Pharoah finished second in the Blue Norther S. over this course and distance earlier this month when throttled down on the lead; perhaps today she’ll be allowed to stride out early and put to good use some of her natural speed. Island of Love (TOC=5-1; ML=8/5) is an unbeaten (in two starts) Italian invader now in the P. D’Amato barn, which has superior stats with these first-off-the-plane European imports. She’s a diminutive filly with a good turn of foot, picks up F. Prat, and should be competitive on this circuit based on her overseas Timeform ratings. We’ll give Shoppingforpharoah the edge on top but have tickets using both in the various rolling exotics.

Use (in order of preference: 2-Burnin Turf; 4-Suzie Qzz Brother; 5-Betito

Forecast: Here’s race requiring a spread, as none of the main contenders appear to be trustworthy. Burnin Turf (TOC=4-1; ML=5-1) prefers the front end but can stalk, pounce, and go if the pace flow dictates, so his connections have options based on how the race shapes up. He’s strong in the speed figure department, shows a healthy recent work tab, and figures to fire his best shot in this first-level allowance California-bred main track miler. Suzie Qzz Brother (TOC=9/2; ML=4-1) stretches out for the first time, and if he’s ever going to handle two turns, we suspect it’ll be in his first try. The blinkers-off angle intrigues us as well, so at 4-1 on the morning line he’s worth including on your ticket. Betito (TOC=5-1; ML=2-1) got good last summer but his recent form has been stale, and he’s always been a need-the-lead type in a race that contains other front-runners that are drawn inside of him. That said, the Heat Shield gelding is reunited with F. Prat, under whom he ran well to be second two runs back while earning a speed figure that makes him a major player. We’ll toss him in.

Use (in order of preference): 3-Say the Word; 4-Friar’s Road

Forecast: Say the Word (TOC=9/5; ML=2-1), fresh from a smart win in the Hollywood Turf Cup-G2 in November, has looked sharp and eager in recent workouts to indicate he’s ready to pick up where he left off. There should be sufficient pace in the race to set things up for his closing kick, so we’re expecting the P. D’Amato-trained gelding to be along in time. Friar’s Road (TOC=2-1; ML=5/2) is just 2-for-12 in his career but has numbers that make him quite dangerous. He was a close third to Say the Word at Del Mar two runs back and lost little in defeat last time out when nosed out in the off-the-turf San Gabriel S. in late December. Say the Word will get most of the play in our rolling exotics while Friar’s Road will be used as a backup.

                    Notable Workouts:

Say the Word (January 17, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.3h TT). Grade: B
Broke off a few lengths behind Midnight Silence and Quidproquo Joeblow (both 5f, 1:03.2h TT) in training track breeze and caught that pair close home while just galloping through the lane, final quarter mile in :24.4. Won the Hollywood Turf Cup-G2 at Del Mar in November and seems sharp and eager following his freshening.

                    Friar’s Road (January 23, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.4h TT). Grade: B
Much the best over Offlee Naughty (5f, 1:01.3h) for M. McCarthy, mildly urged through the lane while lengthening out in the final stages, splits of :24.3, :36.4 and 1:01.2 on our watches, slower than given but decent enough. Handles any surface, marathoner always gives his best in the afternoon.

Bob and Jackie (January 23, Santa Anita, 5f, :59.3h TC). Grade: B-
Turned in good clocking while working well off the race in solo turf drill for R. Baltas but was under some urging through the lane and never switched leads. Was hoping for better after upset gate-to-wire win in the San Gabriel S.-G3 last month.

Use (in order of preference): 1-Bold Choice; 5-Unwritten Code

Forecast: Bold Choice finished a solid runner-up in a similar state-bred maiden sprint at Del Mar in November, though as the 6/5 favorite more was expected. She returns following a two month vacation with a brief work tab that includes a half-mile drill two weeks ago that was a tad disappointing. The daughter of Grazen certainly can win, but there is a concern that at the present time she’s not quite where she was during the fall. Unwritten Code has rising speed figures but was a voided claim for $50,000 when second as the 3/5 favorite at Los Alamitos in mid-December. She’s being protected today, so we’ll assume she’s okay, but she is another that may be hard to trust. These are the two main contenders, but the confidence level is low. Tread lightly.

                    Notable Workouts:

Bold Choice (January 16, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.3h). Grade: B-
Ridden hard from the three furlong pole to the wire to be all out, splits of :11.3 and :36.2 for S. Knapp. Away since November, was expecting to see a bit better but is a Cal-bred maiden and is eligible to return in a soft spot.

Use (in order of preference): 3-Smuggler’s Run; 1-Maglev

Forecast: Smuggler’s Run (TOC=Evens; ML=3-1) scored at first asking and did it the right way, quickly gaining control after a slow start to make the lead in hand and then lengthening at will in the final furlong. He joins the R. Baltas barn, switches to J. Hernandez, moves into stakes company, and goes from dirt to turf, so there’s a lot of new stuff on his table. However, he’s strikes us as a quality colt with plenty of improvement in him, so at 3-1 on the morning let’s put him on top. Additionally, the analytics love him. Maglev (TOC=5-1; ML=5/2) shortens to an extended sprint after a sharp U.S. debut when runner-up over a mile in the Eddie Logan S. earlier this month. He was effective sprinting overseas during his two-year-old season and with some help up front will be heard from in the closing stages. We’ll try to get by using just these two in our rolling exotics.

                    Notable Workouts:

Echosmith (January 21, Santa Anita, 4f, :50.3h TT). Grade: B
Looked nice in company with Indio Mo (4f, :51h TT), breaking off a couple of lengths behind and then finishing head-and-head at the wire without really being asked (workmate ridden), final three furlongs in :12.3 and :36.4. Seems like a useful gelding from Europe, getting fit, definitely a route type.

Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

                      January 30, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Hawthorne Racecourse has an 8-race program scheduled with the feature coming in Race 4, an Open Trot with a $13,700 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 5. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                      Race 5

5-El Oh Govner (9/5)-Gets some class relief which should make a big difference. Appears to be a cut above this group with a decent steer and if minds manners.
6-Freddie Da Fox (9-1)-Franco takes the lines for the 1st time and steps-up coming off a win. Could be on the point or near the lead throughout. Can compete with this crew and doesn't have any breaking issues which are found in most others.

                      Race 6

5-Major Prince (5/2)-This is the 2nd time for Lasix and the 2nd start at Haw. Raced well last week but was no match for a well-meant winner. Won't be 31.80-1 but should be a player, and could be better tonight.
8-Walkin Papers (9/2)-Makes the 1st start since 11-25 for the Willis barn and the qualifier was good, paced the 2nd half in 57.4. Could fire hot off the bench and surprise if Franco gets into striking range at the top of the lane.
9-Run Forrest (5-1)-This wasn't Seekman's choice (5), but Oosting knows well. Had a good try in last which was the 1st start since 9-26. Paced the back-half in 57.1 with a 26.4 last quarter. They walked to the half in last, but the fractions should be more lively tonight and that can help the cause.

                      Race 7

2-Spice-It-Up (3-1)-Team Leonard entry fits well with this crew. Should be forwardly placed and in the hunt at the wire.
7-Sly Little Fox (5-1)-This will be the Haw debut and has been off 3 weeks. Has won 4 of 6 lifetime and 2 of those wins have come on the big track at Hoosier. Should be a player if doesn't need the start.

                      Race 8

6-Grab N Go (2-1)-Has made 3 starts in Stickney and has been competitive in all of them. Should be forwardly placed and best to respect.
8-JK Rockin Roll (6-1)-Got on the engine and faded down the lane but now meets a softer group. This was Warren's pick over the 1 & 7 and will look for a different trip this time.

                      0.50 Late Pick 4

                      5,6/5,8,9/2,7/6,8

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Rainbow Six Ticket Sunday at Gulfstream

                        January 30, 2022 | By Jerry Shottenkirk

Sunday is a Mandatory Rainbow Six Day at Gulfstream, with the sequence running from races 6-11, and the success of this ticket mostly comes down to the success of a 5-year-old mare named Don’t Get Khozy.

It’s hard not to get cozy with Khozy on your ticket, as she’s the probable favorite in the seventh race.

She’s a single on this $86.40 suggested ticket, and for good reason: She’s in a seven-furlong starter optional claiming race and was second in Gulfstream’s Rampart Stakes two back and third in Tampa Bay Downs’ Wayward Lass last out. She was an easy winner the last time she was at this level and will be difficult to beat. She has the best closing move of any in this race and can make great gains going this distance.

Here's a look at those being used on the ticket:

6th Race (2:35 p.m. ET, maiden special weight)

MESAORIA has had just one start, which is one more than several of these. She made a good run for fourth at Aqueduct in her only attempt. She was far back through the first six furlongs and then began to roll. She ran up into fourth in midstretch and could not sustain the strong bid that got her into that position. She gets Paco Lopez up for this and can probably start her run earlier.
Also on the ticket: Ughrouda, Beside Herself, Public Service.

7th Race (3:08 p.m. ET, starter optional claiming)

DON’T GET KHOZY has made some strides up the class ladder lately and takes a step down into a more comfortable area. She’ll have plenty of speed in front of her, and that’s when she’s at her most dangerous late in the game.
Also on the ticket: None (single).

8th Race (3:38 p.m. ET, maiden special weight)

COLERIDGE wasn’t played and didn’t run much the first time out but he has a couple of works since then, and that one start should give him the advantage over many first time starters. He’s likely to follow a good pace in this two-turn event and can make up ground as he goes along.
Also on the ticket: Bandimere, Mr. Cellular, Flash Frost.

                        9th Race (4:11 p.m. ET, starter allowance)

FRENCHMEN STREET is perfect in two starts over the Gulfstream Tapeta and finished from off the pace in each. He was outrun in each of those and now draws the inside, which could help his cause early on. Several horses are in good form, and spreading out here is a good way to connect with a good price.

Also on the ticket: Unprecedented, Mister Kelly, Tropicat, City Drifter, Self Taught.

10th Race (4:42 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)

MID DAY IMAGE was a gate-to-wire winner of the Claiming Crown Emerald on the turf and most recent was fourth on the Tapeta strip. He returns to grass and should be a big player going a mile.

Also on the ticket: Basquiat, Skyro.

                        11th Race (5:14 p.m. ET, claiming)

ROCKET JOE COPPER moves from turf to Tapeta, and the surface doesn’t seem to matter. He’s been effective on dirt and grass and seeks his third straight win after winning in the slop and on the turf. He’s had a steady late move and picks up Paco Lopez for the run.
                        Also on the ticket: Drillomatic.

                        Gulfstream Park’s 20-cent Rainbow Six:
                        6) #3 Ughrouda, #7 Beside Herself, #9 Public Service, #10 Mesaoria.
                        7) #4 Don’t Get Khozy.
                        8) #1 Bandimere, #6 Flash Frost, #9 Coleridge.
                        9) #1 Frenchmen Street, #4 Unprecedented, #6 Mister Kelly, #7 Tropicat, #8 City Drifter, #9 Self Taught.
                        10) #5 Mid Day Image, #6 Basquiat, #8 Skyro.
                        11) #3 Rocket Joe Copper, #8 Drillomatic.
                        The ticket: 3-7-9-10 with 4 with 1-6-9 with 1-4-6-7-8-9 with 5-6-8 with 3-8 ($86.40).
