Top Horse Racing Picks for Wednesday, February 16, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

Penn National Race Course yielded some good underdog moneymakers, but Sam Houston Race Park and Tampa Bay Downs both had 8/1 sleepers for our Wednesday horseracing enjoyment—or should I say winjoyment?

Probably not. I apologize. It won’t happen again.

In any case, remember to check the full race-cards for all three tracks at our top online racebooks.

      Good luck!
Wednesday Picks for Penn National Race Course

We’ll begin on the main track with race one, a one mile and 70 yards allowance race for fillies and mares four years ole and upward. I buying a win ticket on the third-favored (at 7/2) Queen Rosemary, ridden by veteran jockey Tyler Conner.

The standout in this six-horse field, this five-year-old mare moneyed ten of her 17 career starts, winning four. While she struggled to graduate the maiden class until last June, since then she’s established herself as a contender, evidenced by her three-win streak at Penn National during the last two months of 2021.

Mark V. Salvaggio trains Queen Rosemary for owners Tribe Dawg LLC and Thomas Kline.

Race two is a one mile and 70 yards allowance race for Pennsylvania-bred four-year-olds and upward. I’m going to agree with the morning line and bet the 7/5 favorite, Trending Up, with Maicol J. Inirio in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding finished nine of his 12 career starts in the money, winning three, which gives him a comfortable statistical lead in this six-horse field.

Thirty-year horseracing veteran Timothy C. Kreiser trains Trending Up for owner James C. Wolf.

Race seven is a six-furlong claiming race for three-year-olds that have never won two races. I’m backing the fourth-favored (at 4/1) Stormy Bonnie, with Tyler Conner aboard.

This gelding moneyed one of his four career starts with the win of his second maiden graduation attempt last August. He then went on to finish sixth in a field of nine in the Dover Stakes at Delaware Park in late August, and sixth out of nine in the Mark McDermott Stakes (Black Type) at Presque Isle Downs in September.
In this inexperienced field of six, that makes Stormy Bonnie the right horse for the job.

With more than four decades in the horse racing business, James L. Lawrence, II trains Stormy Bonnie for owner Matthew Schera.
My Wednesday Picks for Sam Houston Race Park

Let’s start on the turf course with race five, a one-mile claiming run for four-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 8/1 sleeper in this 12-horse field: Pasamonte Man, piloted by Freddy Jose Manrrique.

This six-year-old gelding finished 18 of his 37 career starts in the money, winning ten.

Austin Gustafson trains Pasamonte Man for owner Christopher K. Harrington.

If Pasamonte Man doesn’t make it to the starting gate, there’s no shame in betting the 5/2 favorite, Hard Attack, with Jose L. Alvarez in the irons.

Trained by Paul Duhon for owner Mark Kassouff, this eight-year-old gelding moneyed 13 of his 26 career starts, winning five.

We switch to the dirt track for race six, a 1-1/16 mile allowance optional claiming race for four-year-olds. I’m betting my two dollars on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Vangilder, with veteran jockey Richard E. Eramia aboard.

One of the younger horses in this nine-horse field, the six-year-old Vanglider finished in the money 13 of his 28 career starts, winning six, including his two most recent. Just prior to those two wins, he finished sixth in the 11-horse Butch Gleason Classic Stakes at Arapahoe Park.
I know—finishing mid-pack in an ungraded stakes race isn’t exactly indisputable proof of a horse’s talents, but in comparison to the rest of the current field, it does say Vanglider’s the right pick.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers for wins and earning every year since 2013, Robertino Diodoro trains Vanglider for owner Richard L. Davis.

Let’s move back to the turf for race seven, a 1-1/16 miles allowance race for fillies and mares four years old and upward.

If the fourth-favored also-eligible/MTO Seeing Double enters the starting gate, bet him and his jockey, Freddy Jose Manrrique, to win.

Trained by M. Brent Davidson for owner-breeder P & D Racing Stables, the five-year-old Seeing Double moneyed 13 of her 22 career starts, winning five—three of those in the past 12 months. Against this field, that makes her the standout choice.

if Seeing Double isn’t in the race, go with the favorite, Daddymademedoit, ridden by Stewart Elliott for owner-trainer Steven M. Asmussen.

The six-year-old Daddymademedoit finished ten of her 21 career starts in the money, winning three, including her most recent, a claiming race here at Sam Houston last month.
Wednesday’s Picks for Tampa Bay Downs

Let’s start on the turf course with race five, a 1-1/16 miles allowance optional claiming race for three-year-old fillies. I’m betting my two dollars on the 4/1 third-favored Finery, with Jesus Lopez Castanon aboard.

This filly won her single career start last month, finishing a length and a half ahead of her nearest competitor in a nine-horse race. Castanon was in the irons for that victory.

Preakness and Breeders’ Cup veteran Arnaud Delacour trains Finery for owner-breeder Catherine M. Wills.

We move back to the dirt track for race eight, a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. My money’s on the 8/1 sleeper Bellarific, ridden by veteran jockey Fernando De La Cruz.

This five-year-old mare finished in the money for six of her ten career starts, winning three—including her two most recent. And yes, De La Cruz was in the irons for both of those victories.
Sure, a couple of the horses in this race have a smattering of stakes-level experience—but those races were too long ago and their finishes in them too unimpressive to make us risk a wager here.

A four-decade veteran of horse racing, Anthony J. Granitz trains Bellarific for Tri County Stables.

We’re back on the turf course for race nine, a one-mile claiming run for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won three races. I’m backing one of the second-favored entries (there are two at 4/1 in this race)—Musetta, with Jesus Lopez Castanon in the irons.

This four-year-old filly finished seven of her 12 career starts in the money, winning two, which gives her the best overall statistics in this otherwise unimpressive 14-horse field.

Jose H. Delgado trains Musetta for Carole Star Stables.

Gulfstream Park Picks: Shug's On Alert on February 16
        By J.N. Campbell

Gulfstream Park Picks - Wednesday, February 16, 2022

        Race 1: 7-4-6-2
        Race 2: 5-4-6-3
        Race 3: 4-5-3-1
        Race 4: 1-9-3-6
        Race 5: 2-5-1-4
        Race 6: 5-4-7-1
        Race 7: 4-7-6-5
        Race 8: 3-10-4-2
**Most Likely Winner: Aeronaut #7 (Race 1)**
**Best Value: Juno Sea #1 (Race 4)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 1: Aeronaut #7, 4/1):

This is a tough race (all tags) that might be taken off-the-turf, if weather rolls in and drops some significant rainfall. I still like this Frank Russo-trainee because this son of Orb’s form looks solid. Tyler Gaffalione has the ability to rival either of the Ortiz Bros, and wouldn’t it be excellent if this 4-yr-old could use those prior “Speed Figs” to win the day. He has the experience, and the proper rider. All in … 4/1 … yes, please!

        Wager: $100 Win, #7

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Juno Sea #1, 20/1):

Trainer Brian Lynch has already had a stupendous week, what with his major score in the Sam Davis at Tampa. He returns to Gulfstream with a long shot in-tow, but I think this filly by Midshipman has some major upside. She got her debut out of the way, but it was an off-track day on 27 Jan. Now, she gets back to the turf, or possibly the Tapeta for this 2nd out race. Lynch adds “blinkers,” and that could be just what she needs to succeed. The addition of jockey Julien Leparoux is an added bonus, as he can handle young horses so expertly. Speaking of added bonuses, how about the M/L odds … 20/1.

        Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

        Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Turf, 1 1/16th, OC75kn1x, 3F):

A conditioned turf route race for 3-yr-old fillies, I am hoping this is the one grass race that is not taken off. We shall see … check the weather. If there is significant “give” or it heads to the Tapeta, we can mix and match. What we do know is that Courtlandt Farms owns a runner with strong green lines, and the potential for great things. On Alert #4 looks promising for trainer Shug McGaughey, especially after the daughter of famed sire Medaglia d’Oro broke her maiden in a MSW60k. Guided by Javier Castellano, one of the great stretch-run jockeys of the age, she was impressive making up nearly 5-lengths. This is a budding star, and she is going to take money, as she tries to go up the ladder. Let’s key her, but try to get a couple of higher-priced runners into the mix. I also like Graham Motion’s Kitten’s Collusion #6 because she has a famous set of parents, and is getting back to the track after a break. Luis Saez gets the call too. The other pair of runners that need to be included are Brendan Walsh’s My Philly Twirl #7 and Rusty Arnold’s Daisy Bee #5. The latter is one of those Calumet homebreds by English Channel, and in the past, they have competed impressively (i.e. English Bee). Those entries should help round out a splendid ticket.

        Wager: Trifecta Wheel, $2, 4 w 5/6/7 w 5/6/7

Sam Houston Picks: Broberg tied with Asmussen as of February 16
          By J.N. Campbell

Sam Houston Race Park Picks - Wednesday, February 16, 2022

          Race 1: 5-3-2-7
          Race 2: 1-5-6-2
          Race 3: 8-2-6-1
          Race 4: 1-4-7-2
          Race 5: 9-7-4-5
          Race 6: 2-4-6-7
          Race 7: 3-11-1-9
          Race 8: 4-1/1A-6-5
          Race 9: 1-10-2-7
**Most Likely Winner: Mesabi #1 (Race 9)**
**Best Value: Big Money Machine #9 (Race 5)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 9: Mesabi #1, 1/1):

Looking at the Post Position "Win%" chart that SHRP publishes, you will notice that the #1 hole produces a good many winners on the grass. Not only is this gelding emanating from that location, but he is also trained by HOF Steve Asmussen. This Winchell homebred is by the popular producer—Gun Runner. I realize that he might be even money when this race goes off, and though he has yet to try the turf, he looks impressive. In his only career race, he just missed breaking his maiden at Sam Houston on 13 January in a MSW36k. With Stewart Elliott in the irons, he should achieve that goal … with a win on the Connally lawn.

          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #1

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Big Money Machine #9, 12/1):

Searching for some major value on this Wednesday, I stumbled across this venerable 9-yr-old gelding that is trained by Karl Broberg. He is heading the turf after a being on the dirt at Evangeline, Delta, and just last week at SHRP. I picked him then, with Lane Luzzi aboard, in what looked to be a price play at 19/1. The result was a 4th place finish, but coming out of that race, it looks like he is maintaining a high-level of fitness. The best news is that once again, Broberg teams with Leading Rider, Ry Eikleberry. The move to the turf is a solid idea, and even though he will probably be bet down into the single digits, I like the action.

          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #9 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

          Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 6: Dirt, 1 1/16th, OC30kn2x, 4+):

One of the highlights, and there are many on the SHRP Wednesday card, is this tough route on the MT oval. A group of 9 older males will be contesting the pace in this OC30k, and expect it to be pretty healthy when it comes to fractions. Probably tops on the tote when this thing goes off, will be the new claim by Robertino Diodoro. Vanglider #6 used to be with Steve Asmussen, but the 6-yr-old by Paynter was scooped up by the conditioner who is based at Oaklawn. He has a string in Houston, so it will be interesting to see if he can make it 3 in-a-row. I am against this M/L favorite, and instead I think that my top selection falls to Bret Calhoun’s Bandit Swanson #2. This gelding by Ghostzapper has a number of plusses to his credit. Calhoun has an excellent outfit, and his charge just missed the gold medal last time (15 Jan). I know that was a sprint, but to me, this runner is easily able to go longer … and wants to. Jose Alvarez should be able to get the most out of him, and I like his chances. I am not sure 6/1 is achievable, but if he is anywhere above 3/1, I am going to bet heavily on him. One other entry that I find irresistible is from the barn of Tina Hurley. Those of you that follow SHRP or Lone Star will remember Heavenly Rhythm #4 from last year. With a career record on-track of 3/5, it is hard to buck this one, even though she has not been seen since last summer at Monmouth Park. Taking on the “boys” is always a good sign, and Hurley clearly thinks that her mare is ready to fire. At 30/1 on the M/L, we can expect that to come down. Maybe Benny Landeros, a rider who never gets much acclaim, is this 5-yr-old’s regular pilot. This race is going to be good!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 2/4/6

Doomben racing tips & top value bets | Wednesday, February 16

Eight metropolitan races will be run and won at Doomben on Wednesday, so HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst has picked out his best bets and quaddie numbers for the day. The track is currently a Soft 7 due to persistent rain from Monday afternoon onwards, while the rail is out 7m for the entire course. The first race is set to jump at 1:38pm AEST with the running of a 2YO Colts & Geldings Maiden Plate.
            Best Bet – She’sgottheboom

We are siding with a debutant on Wednesday, as the Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted stable saddle up She’sgottheboom. The two-year-old filly has had two trials in preparation for her debut run, finishing third under a tight hold at Deagon on January 25, before winning her most recent trial by 5.3 lengths at the Sunshine Coast on February 8 in very impressive fashion. The in-form Boris Thornton will ride this daughter of Spirit Of Boom, so that is a huge plus, while he has also had the chance to build a relationship with the filly having ridden her in both trials. Drawn ideally in barrier four, She’sgottheboom will be either leading or in the first three of four horses, before we expect her to pull clear in the concluding stages.
            Best Bet
            Race 2 – She’sgottheboom (#9)
            $2.35 with Sportsbet
Next Best Bet – Little Miss Pixie

In the first leg of the quaddie, Little Miss Pixie will be looking to win her first run for her summer campaign, when she lines up in a Benchmark 68 over 1350m. The four-year-old mare has had four runs this time in, finishing second twice and third twice when not beaten far on either occasion. The daughter of Spill The Beans ran third at this track and distance on January 12 when finishing behind Harlequin Field and Mystic Aroma. Tony & Maddysen Sears took her to Ipswich a fortnight later and she ran third again over that same distance when a well-backed favourite. She is now fifth-up for the campaign, so she should be rock-hard fit, while she also gets a nice weight drop and has drawn beautifully in barrier six. Jim Byrne goes on for the first time this preparation which is an advantage, given he is leading the Queensland Metropolitan Jockeys’ Premiership. This looks a good race for Little Miss Pixie.
            Next Best
            Race 5 – Little Miss Pixie (#8)
            $3.60 with Sportsbet
            Best Value – Calm Seeker

Matt Kropp and Samantha Collett team up in the penultimate race with four-year-old entire, Calm Seeker. The son of Complacent has always shown some ability, so much so, his trainer sent him around in the Group 1 Queensland Derby during the Brisbane Winter Carnival. Although he didn’t beat a runner home that day, he returned to the track in December and won a trial nicely, before going to the races and winning at Toowoomba on December 18 by just under a length. He finished a couple of lengths off his rivals at his next two starts, and then ran much better at Toowoomba on January 29 over 1625m, hitting the line nicely to run third. He stays at the mile (1640m) and finds himself in a very winnable race. Collett is riding brilliantly at the minute, so her services can get this horse home across the line first.
            Best Value
            Race 7 – Calm Seeker (#5)

HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst brings you his best bets and free quaddie numbers for Wednesday’s seven-race card on the Kensington track at Royal Randwick. The track is currently a Soft 5, while the rail is out 5m for the entire course. The first race will be underway at 2:20pm AEDT, while the last is scheduled to jump at 5:50pm AEDT.
Kensington Best Bet Of The Day – Cap Estel

Anthony Cummings and Jason Collett combine in the third with promising filly, Cap Estel. The three-year-old daughter of Zoustar won her maiden in fine fashion at this track on February 2 in a 1400m 3YO Maiden, defeating Sing A Love Song by three-tenths of a length. Prior to that, she was unlucky behind Po Kare Kare, who also looks to have plenty of ability. Cap Estel stays at the same track and distance she proved too good at two and a half weeks ago and finds herself in another winnable race. She’s drawn wide again, but she looks pretty versatile, so if she is near last in the run, we won’t be too worried. This filly can go on with it now.
              Best Bet
              Race 3 – Cap Estel (#5)
              $3.90 with Sportsbet
Next Best Bet – Easy Campese

We actually made Cap Estel and Easy Campese our two best bets at the February 2 meeting at this track and they both won well, so we see no reason to drop off. Easy Campese found the front over 1400m at his last start and went through his gears easily to win by nearly four lengths. The John Sargent-trained four-year-old has a really good record with Ellen Hennessy on his back, so we love seeing that she has stuck with him, as her 3kg claim will get the son of Sidestep down to 61.5kg on Wednesday. Drawn barrier one, Easy Campese will rail through to lead and take some real catching as he steps out to 1550m. We are confident he will win again.
              Next Best

It’s not often that Chris Waller or James McDonald go through a Sydney Metropolitan meeting without a winner, so we are hoping that they can combine to win the last race of the afternoon when they team up with Cape Breton. The three-year-old gelding won his first two starts as a two-year-old, before going to Eagle Farm and contesting the Group 1 J.J. Atkins at just his third start. The son of Vancouver didn’t really come back in the spring, running last in his first-up run in a Benchmark 78 behind Promise Of Success, before hitting the line well to run seventh in the Listed Springtime Stakes at Flemington on Stakes Day. Waller tipped the gelding out after that run, before sending him to the trials at the end of January where he was given a soft time behind Hilal and Eyes To Eye. His most recent trial was much better, finishing second behind Zarastro. McDonald had a lot to do with Cape Breton early on his career, so it’s good to see him reunite with the gelding on Wednesday. He can be winning.

Sandown Hillside is set to host yet another eight-race card on Wednesday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert has run his eye over the card. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 3m for the entire circuit, so it might be tough to make ground from the rear of the field in conditions that have tended to favour on-speed runners in the past. With that in mind, here are our free best bets and quaddie picks.
Sandown Best Bet – Castlereagh Kid

Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott opt to bring Castlereagh Kid to Sandown following a dominant eight-length victory at Gosford last start. Having led by close to seven lengths on the home turn, the three-year-old bay gelding had every right to tire but kept building on his margin in the home straight. He draws barrier one for his Melbourne debut and gains the services of Damien Oliver, who should help him gain an uncontested lead throughout. The step up to 1800m from the mile looks ideal second-up from a spell, while he should also appreciate the firmer deck. If Ollie can have him settled out in front, we expect the G.O.A.T. will have them chasing with 600m to go as Castlereagh Kid races away to another win.
                Best Bet
                Race 4 – Castlereagh Kid (#1)
                $2.15 with Bet365
Next Best at Sandown – Chain

One of our better bets of the day comes up in the opening event as the Chris Waller-trained Chain looks to break a string of runner-up performances. Having finished second in both runs this campaign, the three-year-old brown gelding clearly has some ability, but he has just found himself running into one better. He was trapped three wide with no cover at Pakenham but did well to stick on and only be beaten by a half-length. He does his best racing when settling close to the speed, and in the small field of eight we expect Craig Williams to be aggressive from barrier six and dictate terms throughout. On paper, Chain looks to be the obvious leader, and under a well-rated ride on a favourable deck for leaders, the son of Exosphere should do enough to break through for a maiden win at start five.

Best Value at Sandown – Tea Master

Last-start maiden winner Tea Master comes to what looks to be quite the winnable BM64 in metro company. The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained three-year-old was busting for a run in the home straight at Moe on January 18, and despite not seeing clear air until the final furlong, he leapt out of the ground and proved too strong late. From barrier nine with Jye McNeil hopping on board, we doubt that the son of Exceed And Excel will have traffic issues this time around. He showed a sharp turn of foot at Moe, and if he can deliver something similar on Wednesday, we anticipate he will bring up consecutive wins for the first time in his career. The $10 quote at Sportsbet is very juicy.

There are four meetings in Britain and Ireland on Wednesday, with jumps action from Hereford and Wetherby. Dundalk stages a decent all-weather card in the afternoon, while Kempton race under lights from 5pm.

                    Wetherby 1:00 pm

Rebecca Menzie’s novice caught a tartar over this course and distance last month, finishing a very creditable second to the useful Our Jet having gone with zest from the front. He returns to calmer waters at Wetherby on Wednesday, with testing ground to suit and plenty more improvement in the tank after just two runs over hurdles so far.

Dan Skelton’s handicapper goes through his races as though well ahead of this mark, and he has optimum conditions here to win for the first time this season. He hinted at a return to his best in the fog round here last time out 32 days ago, and hopefully the presence of a couple of frontrunners will ensure they go a decent gallop to set things up for a late charge under Harry Skelton.

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for February 16.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Randwick, Sandown, Belmont Park, Doomben and Strathalbyn.

                      RANDWICK KENSINGTON: RACE 2 @ 2:55 PM

MONEY FROM THE SKY (2) resumes here but has had no less than three trials to rev up for this and is drawn perfectly in gate one. Gets 1.5kg off with Sherry's claim and is sure to be right there in the finish. DRESDEN (3) only narrowly went down on debut at Wyong and will have taken plenty from that race day experience. Worth following up. STRAY (4) wasn't disgraced in the Group 1 Flight Stakes before the spell and will find this a stack easier. In the mix. The well-related TABORCA (6) showed good improvement last time out and is one for the multiples.
SELECTIONS: Money From The Sky to win.

                      SANDOWN-HILLSIDE: RACE 4 @ 5:25 PM

Very interesting to see CASTLEREAGH KID (1) switch down the highway after winning like a star in the making at Gosford. Big rating there says that he is up to winning better races than this. Nice test for him with a couple of promising horses around him. They are headed by ASPEN COLORADO (5) who hit the line nicely at Warrnambool first up. Slow out and rider dropped the stick there so plenty of room to improve out to this trip second up. SANTERO (3) powered home to win over the mile at Pakenham. He can go right on with that and give this a shake. Respect KANZAI (8) off a win and POPPY JOAN (9) with the blinkers back on.
SELECTIONS: Good race but Castlereagh Kid looks one for better races.

                      BELMONT PARK: RACE 5 @ 4:40 PM

GUARD THE SAFE (2) will be better for the three runs back and was a 2-1 favourite here this grade the latest. Has more to offer and appeals. RELIABLE CHOICE (7) has been freshened off the big heavily-bet Maiden win. He's promising and the CJP-Durrant linkage is potent. Draws to advantage and can lift again. MARZIPAN LAD (3) resumes and has shown enough to say he's a chance. Owns a trial win this track over 1000m. FIRST MOMENT (8) was just been here on resumption and is back a level. Draws much better and won't be 100-1 today.
                      SELECTIONS: Backing Guard The Safe.

                      DOOMBEN: RACE 6 @ 4:33 PM

RATIONS (2) has been lipped out the last four and comes to the middle distance for the first time. Draws out but winning rider Byrne is reunited and will manage. Tipping the mare will see it right out. ASHER (3) is a leader who won the Maiden at Ipswich before the half-head defeat at Kilcoy. Keeps improving and will take pegging back. SERENADE THE CAT (5) won the Maiden easily at 1800m and then flopped on the heavy-track after. She's likely to use the rail and is in light with the 2kg claim. A chance to bounce. STYLE SEEKER (1) and DOTNED (6) are also worth consideration.
                      SELECTIONS: Rations gets another chance.

                      STRATHALBYN: RACE 5 @ 4:00 PM

DESIRED (7) spiked her figures winning the 60 at The Bridge before the near-miss at Morphettville. The form reads well for this and she can bounce back for the star yard. MISS MUCINNI (4) is also in good hands and didn't miss a beat winning the CL1 here first-up. Ran even-money off the trial win and fitter looks capable of taking the next step. EQUICHUNK (1) has won his last three but this is harder. The low gate and 3kg claim advantage and he's sure to give a sight. A gap to the rest.
                      SELECTIONS: Backing Desired.

                          #13
Hong Kong Preview: Purton finds Soulmate
                          Alastair Bull

The appointment of leading jockey Zac Purton could be enough to get #2 Soulmate back in winning form in the Cypress Handicap at Happy Valley Feb. 16.

Soulmate has been in great form in the 2021-22 season. After a couple of prep runs, Soulmate ran second at Class 4 level before going up in grade and winning twice at Class 3 level at Sha Tin.

He then blew the start badly Jan. 16, finishing 11th of 13; he showed that was best forgotten on his first visit to Happy Valley Feb. 6. On that day, over 1650m (a little more than one mile), the same distance as he faces this week, he beat all but Zone D.

HANSON: Happy Valley a place to rejuvenate your racing soul

In his past two races Soulmate has been ridden by apprentice Alfred Chan, but this week he gets the services of four-time Hong Kong champion jockey Zac Purton, who rides him for the first time.

Soulmate faces a useful field, of whom #5 Gallant Crown, #3 Leap of Faith, and #6 Kinda Cool look the best chances.

Gallant Crown won four of his last six starts in 2020-21, all of them at Happy Valley. He hasn’t won in four starts this season but he has finished no farther back than fourth, and at his last start Jan. 12, he was beaten only by Cheerful Days, who went on to win the rich Chinese New Year Handicap at his next start. Karis Teetan takes the ride.

Leap of Faith comes into the race after winning Jan 26. In that race he beat Maldives, whose form lines with Soulmate and Gallant Crown suggest Leap of Faith has good prospects against them. Third that day was Invincible Missile, who won at his next start, while fourth was Kinda Cool, who opposes Leap of Faith again this week and should go well again.

Soulmate, Gallant Crown, Leap of Faith, and Kinda Cool should be used in all exotics, while the wild card is first-starter #10 Baron Zee, a winner of one race from two starts in Ireland. #1 Bear Again may also be a factor given he is dropping back from Class 2.

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs for February 16, 2022
                            By: Aaron Halterman

It’s a new week of action! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park today, which has another good Wednesday card. We will also be covering Tampa Bay Downs today for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. The paid Rockets have been ROD HOT lately! Let’s kick off the week in a good way!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

                            Gulfstream Park February 16, 2022

                            Race 5: Claiming

#1 Froster Armour will move back to the dirt for this race, while also taking a nice drop down in class. #2 Rhymes Like Dimes will also be dropping down in class in a major way for this one, while getting Jose Ortiz up for the ride.

                            Race 6: Starter Allowance
                            freestar

#7 Larimar moves back over to the dirt for this race, which is where she runs her best races. #1 Awesome Annmaire drops to the starter allowance ranks after running poorly in straight allowance company in her last three starts.

                            Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#7 My Philly Twirl was a solid gate to wire winner last time out, and could get a similar trip today from this outside post. #5 Daisy Bee also won in gate to wire fashion last time out. Look for these two horses to kick clear of the rest of this field early on in the race.

                            Race 8: Claiming

#4 La Rusia nearly won at this level and over this surface last time out. Saez jumps aboard for the second straight race. #3 Kentucky Pride was third last time out over this track, which was her first start off of a long layoff. With improvement, she can win in this spot.

                              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                              Parx Racing - Race #4
                              Picks Notes
#2 Luna Fortuna She drops back down in class after a dull run last time out, but her only try at this level produced a pretty good runner-up finish two starts back, so she seems like a capable player here despite the flat running line.
#5 One Pair of Hands Riser has been doing decent work with cheaper in those recent starts, but she's tactical enough to land another good trip near the top. Worry she might get a bit overbet off the last one.
#6 Pink Vodka She didn't show much in the debut after briefly chasing the pace, but she might be better with that race under her belt while getting in with this softer group at the $16,000 level. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary Luna Fortuna can be tough in here with something like her two-back run, but I would definitely want a fair price, as so far that race has been the exception rather than the rule to her form.

                              Parx Racing - Race #8
                              Picks Notes
#1 Brilliant Chase He is fast enough to avoid getting outrun too badly early, and he might be able to land a nice trip while saving ground on the inside before trying to find a time to switch out. Tough here.
#5 Divine Miracle He steps up out of a slightly softer starter spot, but he has been a good fit with the locals since showing up a couple starts back, and his rate-and-finish style should lead to another perfect trip.
#8 Fast Bob His ceiling might not be quite as high as some of the others in here, but he should be moving late with some purpose. Feel like he's probably an underlay on the board.
Race Summary Brilliant Chase might land the right kind of trip with these today, as there are a couple with some better early speed drawn outside of him. He has some tactical pace that would serve him well.

                              Parx Racing - Race #10
                              Picks Notes
#1 Violent Turbulence He can save ground in the early going here, and there may be a decent little battle that could develop with a couple of forward players drawn further out. Think he's in the mix here if he holds form.
#5 Fortheluvofbourbon He has some dangerous pace to use here, but he'll meet some prompting speed again this afternoon. Chance he runs these off their feet, and his best does the trick, but I'm not sure the price will be appealing.
#2 Wendell Fong He has a right to be tough here after a string of five stakes tries to close out his 2021 campaign. He'd benefit if a couple of these went at it early and allowed him to rally late, but he's also probably quick enough to avoid dropping too far back.
Race Summary Violent Turbulence brings solid recent form, and the price might be fair enough with the other listed pair here likely to take some cash. 'Turbulence gets the edge with what might be a decent trip waiting from the fence.
