More Graytful (#4) and Seven Lilies (#5) look like the two who should vie for favoritism in this New York-bred optional claimer, the second division of today’s sixth race. More Graytful comes off a career-best performance when winning at this level last time with a 113 TimeformUS Speed Figure. He’s stretching out to 7 furlongs today, but he’s handled this distance in the past. He’s very much the horse to beat in his current form, but I think there are some question marks as he exits the Rob Atras barn. Ray Handal is having a great meet, but Atras really seemed to have the key to this horse and I wonder if he’ll regress here.

He faces an Atras-trained rival in Seven Lilies, who is also in fantastic form right now. He ran out of ground when closing into a slow pace last time, and that’s come back as a strong race. Water’s Edge returned to win with a strong speed figure. Seven Lilies just missed at this level two back, and he should relish the slight turnback to 7 furlongs.

I’m most interested in WINNERS LAUGH (#7) as an alternative. He finished sixth of seven runners in his return to the races last time, but he ran a lot better than the result indicates. That was a wicked pace and he outdueled the very fleet Steam Engine on the front end before both succumbed to closers. He earned a strong 112 TimeformUS Speed Figure for that performance, a number that puts him right on par with the two favorites. He figures to move forward off that return and he’s drawn well outside of his main pace rival.

1^st race [NY, Md 40000, 7F] – (4) Boca Kitten (A) broke well in her debut, drifted to the back of the field, and then rallied for second. (2) Carbon returns from a November layoff with three good races in maiden special weights and gets Lasix for the first time. (1) Closing Deals was well bet at 5-2 for Rudy Rodriguez in her first start at this level and finished fourth. (5) Over the Sand was eased in her last start in a maiden special weight and comes back a month later. I’m not afraid to bet horses that come right back from bring eased.

6^th race [NY, OC 45k/N2X, 7F] – (5) Bustin Timberlake (B) has been off since March when he raced wide in a fast pace and hung on to miss the win by a nose. Trainer Charlie Baker is hot right now and good with runners off a break. (7) Daddy Knows has been popular at the claim box having been taken back twice by two different trainers. Each time was in an open claimer. (3) Our Man Mike was a winner of a first-level state-bred allowance with a closing move against a horse that returned to win his next start. (1) T Loves a Fight is in for the claiming option and back facing NY-breds.

8^th race [NY, OC 45k/N2X, 7F] – (5) Seven Lilies (D) was bet down from 3-1 to 6-5 and finished fourth at this level. He cuts back in distance to seven furlongs where he has two wins already. (4) More Graytful was a winner by four lengths on a sloppy track and got claimed for the $45,000 after a front-end effort. He has four wins at Aqueduct. (1) Bustin Shout consistently runs well at this level. He was second last time after rounding back into form after a long layoff. (2) Tapizearance was an impressive winner on a muddy track in a first-level allowance against fellow NY-breds after a stalking trip.

9^th race [Alw 50000s, 6 ½ F] – (3) Air Show (B) was claimed from 2 out of his last 3 starts. Last time he had a wide trip and rallied on a speed favoring track. (5) Trash Talker returned from a layoff and made two improving starts. Last time, he set the pace and finished second at this level. (2) Texas Basin comes back from a May layoff as a new gelding. In March at Aqueduct he won a starter allowance by two lengths for trainer George Weaver who now ships him up from Florida. (8) Colormepazzi set the pace in a similar spot last time and finished second. He ran in the two path on a day when the rail was the place to be.

Best bets: Bustin Timberlake (6^th); Seven Lilies (8^th). Best value: Boca Kitten (1^st); Air Show (9^th).

1st race – (4) Moon Party showed unusual speed and tired late to finish third. Drops in class and will be hard to beat if she returns to her typical style. (9) Mandorla returns to a claimer and will be a main threat. (3) Zambak is worth a look off the Joseph claim. (5) Barbara has some speed and could be tough to catch at this level. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5-9.

3rd race – (4) Coop Tries Harder has been second or third in his last four starts and is overdue for a win. (1) Over the Hills should be closing quickly in the final furlong. (3) Etched in Stone should welcome a return to turf. (8) League of Shadows may wake up on turf. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-8.

6th race – (5) Smokin’ T lacked a strong closing bid in a stakes but fits better here. (6) Main Event looked sharp in his turf debut and shaped up as the one to fear. (3) Mannix does his best running on turf and is worth a look. (8) C My Meister figures to be a stretch threat in this field. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-8.

9th race – (5) Wow Run (A) was a solid second last time out and seems poised for a winning effort. (6) Lucago should benefit from the added distance. (2) Cajun Lover has speed and might appreciate a switch to synthetics. (1) Never Satisfied would benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-6. Doubles: 1-2-5-6 with 4-6-7-9.

10th race – (7) Mouffy won nicely in her career debut on Tapeta but has the breeding to handle dirt in this spot. (9) Majestic d’Oro has stakes experience and will benefit from the rider switch to Irad. (4) Strategy Queen tries a stakes and should be a contender in a claimer.
