Top Horse Racing Picks for Tuesday, March 1, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

It was all about digging for gold at Fair Grounds Race Course, Parx Racing, and Turf Paradise for my Tuesday horseracing picks, with several of my prospective winners in the double-digit range of the odds (two were at 12/1).

Promising choices for our bankrolls, but it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to check my math at one of our recommended horseracing wagering sites.

      Good luck!
Tuesday Picks for Fair Grounds Race Course

We’ll start on the main track with race five, a 1-1/16 miles allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m betting on one of the third-favored underdogs (there are two in this race at 7/2), Sariah Sariah, ridden by James Graham.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money seven of her 13 career starts, winning four, including her two most recent races.

Longtime horseracing veteran Thomas M. Amoss trains Sariah Sariah for owner Joel Politi.

Let’s move to the turf course for race eight—the Mardi Gras Stakes, a $75,000 purse, 5-1/2 furlong run on the dirt track for fillies and mares four years old and upward.

This eight-horse field has some very talented ladies in the starting gate, but I’m going to agree with the morning line here and bet my two dollars on the 9/5 favorite, Elle Z, with Mitchell Murrill in the irons.

This five-year-old mare has been campaigned extensively—and successfully—at the stakes level: She moneyed 11 of her 17 career starts, winning eight. Those wins include her two most recent, the Nelson J. Menard Memorial Stakes (Black Type) on New Year’s Day this year, and the Frederick P. Aime Memorial Stakes (Black Type) in late January, both at Fair Grounds.
Incidentally, Elle Z won the Mardi Gras Stakes last year. So yeah, she’s got this.

Elle Z will see some tough competition from the second-favored (at 2/1) Change of Control and the fourth-favored (at 6/1) Goin’ Good. You might want to consider a box bet here.

Regularly top-ranked among the top 100 trainers for wins, earnings, or both since 2006, Chris A. Hartman trains Elle Z for M Bar O LLC.

We’re back in the dirt track for race nine, a one-mile allowance race for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. I’m calling this one for the second-favored (at 9/2) More Memories, piloted by Rene Diaz.

This three-year-old colt finished four of his five career starts in the money, winning two. He recently finished third out of nine horses in the LA Bred Premier Prince Stakes (Black Type) in early February at Delta Downs. In this race, More Memories also has the advantage of Diaz’ apprentice weight allowance.

Thomas M. Amoss trains More Memories for owner Maggi Moss.
My Tuesday Picks for Parx Racing

Let’s start on the dirt track for race eight, a 6-1/2 furlong starter allowance run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 9/2 fourth-favored Shirley Greene, with Ruben Silvera aboard.

This four-year-old filly spent most of 2021 working on graduating the maidens, but she appears to have the gist of it. For the record, Shirley Greene finished five of her eight career starts in the money, winning three—her most recent three, in fact. She’ll do.

With more than two decades in the horseracing business, Marya K. Montoya trains Shirley Greene for Just In Time Racing LLC.

Race nine is a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming race on the dirt track for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I agree with the morning-line here: Bet the 7/2 favorite, Fleeterthan, ridden by Andy Hernandez.

One of the more experienced mares in this six-horse field, the six-year-old Fleeterthan moneyed 16 of her 29 career starts in the money, winning six. She’s moneyed all three of her 2022 races, with one win and two second-place finishes. She’s got this, particularly with the advantage of Hernandez’ apprentice weight allowance.
And Hernandez—currently in his second professional year as a jockey—is having a very good 2022.

Michael M. Moore trains Fleeterthan for Hardesty Stables.

Race ten is a seven-furlong claiming race on the dirt track for four-year-olds and upward that have not won a race since December 1 (claiming races for $8,000 or less not considered in eligibility). I’m betting my two dollars on the 4/1 second-favored Mach Trial, piloted by Dexter Haddock.

This nine-year-old gelding finished 29 of his 54 career starts in the money, winning ten. He moneyed both of his 2022 races, a win and a third—both in January, both here at Parx.

Elias Tapsas trains Mach Trial—one of his top earners—for JR Jewel Stables.
      Tuesday’s Picks for Turf Paradise

We’re on the turf course for race five, a 7-1/2 furlong claiming run for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races. It’s hard to find a worthy wager in this unimpressive eight-horse field, but I’m going with the 12/1 underdog, Special Lesson, with Israel Hernandez in the irons.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money four of her 13 career starts, winning one—her most recent race in January here at Turf Paradise. Her record is one money finish shy of matching the morning-line favorite’s record of five money finishes in 13 starts, with one win.

Special Lesson is trained by owner-breeder Satchell Stevens, who put Hernandez aboard Special Lesson for her graduation victory.

Let’s move to the dirt track for race seven, a 6-1/2 furlong claiming race for four-year-olds and upward. I’m betting on the 9/2 third-favored Majestic Cafe, ridden by Sahin Civaci.

This five-year-old gelding finished ten of his 17 career starts in the money, winning three. His 2022 record is what clinched the bet for me: Two money finishes, including a win, in three starts.
In this ten-horse race, Majestic Cafe shows—by far—the most potential.

Forty-year horseracing veteran Barry Hodgson trains Majestic Cafe for owner Dale L. Saunders.

We’ll switch back to the grass for race eight, a 7-1/2 furlong claim run on the turf for three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. The entries here aren’t quite as lackluster as that last race, but I still had to burrow down deep to the find the most likely winner—the 12/1 underdog Club Champ, with newcomer Kyle Carter in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed ten of his 17 career starts, winning three. More importantly, he finished both of his 2022 races in the money, one of them a win.

Ryan Kenney trains Club Champ for owners Greg Myers, Paige Schvaneveldt, and Brent Stapley.

The first race at Fair Grounds is a 6-furlong event for a $19,000 purse. Belmar Beauty and Sunday Scheming are likely good enough in this one to get involved in the stretch.

Belmar Beauty is 4 for 16 in her career and pretty fine recently. She has finished 1st, 3rd in her previous two attempts.

Belmar Beauty defeated Cave Creek by 1 ½ lengths for a $17,000 score on December 19. That was a good one from Belmar Beauty, though she didn’t follow up on January 16.

The mare showed 3rd on January 16 in a $19,000 assignment. Another effort like that will put Belmar Beauty close.

Sunday Scheming is 4 for 21 with a strong win in her last outing. She came through for a half-length win over Cave Creek in a $19,000 assignment on February 6.

Sunday Scheming finished 6th, 5th, 1st in her last three, with the mare having success on easier terms. At her price from the No. 1 post, Sunday Scheming is worth considering.

        Post Time: 2:05 p.m. CST
        Distance: 5 ½ Furlongs
        Purse:$19,000

Race 3 covers 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt for a $19,000 purse. Consider Tensas Virginia and Madame Jane to have a chance for a win.

Tensas Virginia is 6th, 5th, 1st in three attempts in her career. After finishing 5th on November 27 in a $45,000 assignment, Tensas Virginia slid in class right to a win.

Tensas Virginia beat Zumra Bayou by 3 lengths for $23,000 on January 14. Appearing in another winnable race, expect this to be a shortlist day for Tensas Virginia.

Madame Jane is coming off a 2 ½ length win in a $26,000 event on January 19. Solid go which has been the case for most of her young career.

She has finished 2nd, 1st, 4th, 2nd, 4th, 1st in her career. Madame Jane has a good chance to make it back-to-back wins.

        +2000 (20/1)

        Post Time: 2:35 p.m. CST
        Distance:5 ½ Furlongs
        Purse:$25,000

Race 4 is a $25,000 event covering 5 ½ furlongs on the turf. Jack the Umpire is 4 for 22 and has fallen behind recently. He has finished 5th, 4th, 8th, 6th in his previous four outings.

The gelding most recently went 6th on February 12 for a $28,000 purse. That wasn’t up to speed after finishing 8th in a $48,000 event a race earlier.

Down to $25,000 is that going to be enough? Denver City has to be saying no. Denver City is 5 for 10 in his career, placing 2nd in his last two, and looks ready to do better.

Denver City had a five-race winning streak before going tougher. In his most recent, he placed 2nd behind Chimney Rock by a neck for $24,000 and then 2nd by 1 length in a tougher $32,000 race.

With another opportunity in a $24,000 assignment, expect Denver City to hold well this time. It may not be the easiest, but if she’s in her current form this can be a win.

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Fair Grounds - Race #6
              Picks Notes
#9 Colors of the Wind She might be most committed to the front end here after having to flash sharp pace to overcome a wide draw last time out. Maybe she can build on the first route try and stick around better today.
#2 Diamant Damhsa Have to think this one will be a good fit for a top team, and she ran well when second in her career debut last year. Worry that she's going to be overbet, but she seems likely to be live here.
#8 Shishito Tactical type has not been able to find that final gear in the first two starts, but she looks like a good fit with this group and should be able to get another really good go of things from close range here.
Race Summary Colors of the Wind showed good pace from a high draw last time out, and she might get a bit better run today while drawn a bit better. It wouldn't be a surprise to see her carry that pace a little bit better in this second try around two turns, and she already isn't too far off what it might take to land this.

              Fair Grounds - Race #8
              Picks Notes
#8 Goin' Good She has been a really reliable turf sprinter, and she should find a pretty great spot while spying the pace from this wide post. Price might be right, and her best stuff keeps her in the mix.
#5 Change of Control She had every chance last time out but couldn't get past Elle Z, but she seems of just a bit higher quality than that one on her best day, and she is a very logical choice to turn the tables here.
#4 Elle Z Tough to argue with her overall form or her really solid local record, and she was really gutsy when landing the local stakes try here in January. Tough to count her out on the engine.
Race Summary Goin' Good has the right kind of positional pace to keep the logical favorites in her sights in the early stages, and she has turned in a handful of really sharp efforts going short on the grass in the past. Dangerous if she's ready to roll in the 4yo debut.

              Fair Grounds - Race #9
              Picks Notes
#10 Touchdown Joe He might get a decent setup from off the splits today in a race with a handful of forward players, including a couple who draw wide and should have to hustle to force the pace. Think this guy might be the right one if he can get a bit cleaner trip today.
#7 More Memories He couldn't hang late last out with stakes company, but his previous form fits well here, and he was a nice winner at this sometimes tricky mile trip two starts back. Dangerous here.
#2 Martinized Tactical speed showed better pace last time out when leading most of the way, but I like his ability to settle back off the splits just a bit, as the pace could be on the fair side today.
Race Summary Touchdown Joe had a bit of trouble last time out, and he has what might be the right running style for a race where some prompting pace might keep things moving right along up top early. The price should be right.

                Picks Notes
#6 SHOOT THE ODDS Chased sharpie in latest, has had alot of chances at this level.
#3 PHANTOM SHADOW Changed tactics, led until stretch, gets Lasix for return.
#2 BECK JR Ran second in 2 of last 3 starts at double-digit odds.
Race Summary Shoot the Odds chased the 1-to-9 repeat winner as the pace picked up in the third quarter and he held second until late. He deserves another chance despite moving from inside out. Play a 6-ALL exacta.

                Dover Downs - Race #1
                Picks Notes
#6 CNTNOBDYTELMENOTHN Needed last, might not need another if he breaks with the pack.
#1 SUPER MAC Set the pace from post 7 before the 1-to-5 winner passed by.
#2 INSTANTANEOUS CASH Pocket trip, got past 'Mac' to finish second in deep stretch.
Race Summary Cntnobdytelmenothn was far off the gate at the start and headstrong through the opening half, but he rallied 3-wide on the final turn and finished well in his first start off a three-month layoff. He can turn the tables on similar rivals with an alert start. Play 6-1 and 6-2 exactas.

                Yonkers - Race #1
                Picks Notes
#3 HEART ON MY SLEEVE Back with own kind, lures Brennan, won eight times last year.
#6 LL MYSTRO Up for third behind the favorites, has back-class to summon.
#1 DING DING DINGER Chased even-money choice two back at this level.
Race Summary Heart On My Sleeve, no match for an odds-on, repeat winner in his last two starts, gets class relief, Brennan to drive and a better starting spot as he looks to re-capture his 2021 form. Bet on him to win and place.

                  Distance: 5 ½ Furlongs
                  Purse:$25,000

The second race at Penn National is a $25,000 assignment covering 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Look for Sea Fret and Makeajoyfulnoise to do something with this race.

Sea Fret is a one-time winner through 13 assignments. He is coming on recently, finishing 2nd, 1st, in her previous two races.

The mare placed 2nd behind Cal the Po Po by 1 ½ lengths for a $19,000 purse on January 19. She came back on February 9 to beat Outline by 4 ¾ lengths for $23,000 on February 9.

Sea Fret should have a quality chance in this one. Makejoyfulnoise has a serviceable opportunity to block that, though.

Makejoyfulnoise is 1 for 6 and could make good in this one. In her most recent attempt, she placed 2nd behind Espernsita by 2 ½ lengths for a $25,000 purse. That was good.

This was after Makeajoyfulnoise showed 3rd on March 19 in a $61,000 assignment. Back in the $25,000 class, Makeajoyfulnoise should be competitive here.

                  Distance: 1 Mile 70 Yards
                  Purse:$19,500

Race 3 is a $19,500 event covering a mile and 70 yards on the dirt. Flight Risk and Monteleone should be considered for a win in the third outing at Penn National.

Flight Risk is 6 for 39 in his career and finished 2nd, 1st, 1st, 9th in his previous four outings. He won two races back in a half-length win for $21,000 over America Rona.

That was his second win in second trips after a 6 ¾ length win over Staynsidethecircle for an $18,000 purse. Everything was going well until faltering hard on November 30.

Flight Risk finished 9th in a $26,000 race. That class hike didn’t work, but down to $19,500 again, expect better.

Monteleone is 10 for 53 in his career. He is 4th, 4th, 7th in his previous three looks. After 7th on January 10 for a $26,000 purse, Monteleone is dropping to a $19,500 race.

He previously ran well in a tougher class, so this one should be easier for Monteleone. Expect him to be a big runner with the best chance of success.

                  Distance:6 Furlongs
                  Purse:$26,000

Race 4 carries a $26,000 purse covering 6 furlongs. Et’s Toy Solider and Enforcer should be serious contenders in the fourth race.

Et’s Toy Soldier will make his debut on Tuesday with something productive expected. He was clocked at 1:00.65 on February 9 at 5 furlongs. However, hasn’t been close to that time in other workouts.

If Et’s Toy Soldier runs how he did on February 9 then expect something good to happen. Enforcer should be there to pick up on his weakness if not, though.

Enforcer is 5th, 4th, 4th, 5th in four races. No success yet, but he has the experience and down in class versus inexperienced runners.

Enforcer most recently finished 5th on January 31 in a $26,000 race. While that doesn’t look good, this appears like a more manageable assignment in the same grade.

I’m backing Enforcer to get home for the first time in his career.
                  The Bet

                      Turf Paradise - Race #4 - Post: 2:27pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,480 Class Rating: 85

                      Rating:

                      #1 PARLEY STREET (ML=4/1)
                      #7 SUCCESS RATE (ML=2/1)

PARLEY STREET - Winless in his last three starts, this gelding did win on September 8th at Arizona Downs versus tougher competition. Look for this one to go straight on to victory at some pretty good odds in this field. Ran seventh in last race, but not more than five from the lead at the end. SUCCESS RATE - This rider/trainer duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +39. This gelding is in superb physical condition right now. Ended up first last race out and comes back rapidly. Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CHEF (ML=3/1), #5 I AM ALLTHATYOUARE (ML=5/1), #3 LIL LATIGO (ML=6/1),

CHEF - This entrant made little impact last time out finishing eighth. Can't expect a reversal of fortune today. A runner should have more zip at 1 1/16 miles to give me hope about his winning probability at 6 furlongs. LIL LATIGO - I can't play this habitual non-winner. Gets the job fulfilled occasionally. This group is a whole lot tougher than the ones he met in the last clash.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 PARLEY STREET to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/2 or better though

                        # 4 MACH TRIAL 4/1
                        # 10 DRENA'S BULLET 9/2
ALEJANDRO'S TEAM looks to be a strong contender. He has earned very good figures under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well against this group of horses in this race. MACH TRIAL - With a reliable ROI of +23 this trainer has shown formidable results with entries running at this distance and surface. DRENA'S BULLET - Strong rider with handler numbers make this horse a very solid selection.

                          Rating:

                          #3 CHECK SIX (ML=6/1)
                          #7 ORBITING THE SKY (ML=2/1)

CHECK SIX - This mare hasn't won in her last three starts, but she did win on September 17th against better at 1 mile. Looking at today's class figure, this racer is meeting an easier bunch than last out at Turfway Park. ORBITING THE SKY - Leon and Sullivan have had terrific success together over the last year. Last race out, finished fifth on the mud at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. Will do better in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SARATOGA STYLE (ML=3/1), #2 LORAN HOLIDAY (ARG) (ML=7/2), #5 VELVET SAMI (ML=4/1),

SARATOGA STYLE - Almost certainly won't make much of a mark this time around. LORAN HOLIDAY (ARG) - Should be difficult for this mount to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the vulnerable contenders list. VELVET SAMI - You always think this horse has a shot to be the victor, but she just misses regularly.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #3 CHECK SIX to win if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

                            # 6 TORAZO 5/1
I've got to go with WHERE U B. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Hernandez will probably have this gelding in excellent position to win the outing. Will probably go to the lead and may never look back. Has raced admirably in dirt sprint races. SPEEDY MOONLITE - Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of solid win percentage - 19 percent - at this distance & surface. Has to be carefully examined for this race if only for the very strong Equibase Speed Fig put up in the last affair. TORAZO - Has run admirably when racing a dirt sprint race. Overall the Speed Figures of this equine look strong in this contest.
