Top Horse Racing Picks for Tuesday, March 8, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I visited Mahoning Valley Race Course, Parx Racing, and Sunland Park for my Tuesday horseracing picks, discovering sleepers at both Mahoning and Parx—and surprisingly, mostly favorites at Sunland.

Remember that you can find the full Tuesday race-cards for all three tracks at our recommended horseracing wagering sites.

      Good luck!
Tuesday Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

Let’s start on the dirt track with race six, a six-furlong allowance race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m backing the statistical leader in this seven-horse field—the third-favored (at 4/1) Galactic, ridden by David J. Haldar.

This six-year-old gelding’s record says it all: He finished 23 of his 34 career starts in the money, winning ten.

Forty-year horseracing veteran James H. McDonald trains Galactic for owner Ulises Cacho. Jockey David Haldar has been in the irons for Galactic’s last three wins.

Race seven is a six-furlong claiming race on the dirt track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I agree with the morning line here: Bet the 5/2 favorite, Lucky Quarters, piloted by Luis Raul Rivera.

The clear choice in this eight-horse field, this five-year-old mare moneyed 13 of her 17 career starts, winning seven.

Trainer Jeffrey A. Radosevich tapped Rivera to saddle Lucky Quarters for her last five races, resulting in four victories.

Regularly ranked in the top 100 for wins for the past two decades, Radosevich trains Lucky Quarters for owner Michael J. Friedman.

Race eight is a six-furlong claiming race for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward that have not won two races since September 8. I’m betting my two dollars on the 6/1 sleeper, Drumbeg, with veteran jockey Charle Oliveros aboard.

This six-year-old mare finished nine of her 18 career starts in the money, winning eight of them.
Drumbeg could see some serious pressure from the 3/1 favorite, Grins n’ Wins ridden by top jockey Angel I. Diaz, but Drumbeg’s history says she will prevail.

Forty-year horseracing veteran Ramon Salcedo trains Drumbeg for Campos Family Ventures LLC.
My Tuesday Picks for Parx Racing

We’ve got four stakes races on the card here at Parx. Let’s start with race seven, the Main Line Stakes—a $100,000 purse, one mile and 70 yards run on the dirt track for three-year-old fillies. My money’s on the 2/1 morning-line favorite, Morning Matcha, with top jockey Frankie Pennington aboard.

She moneyed all eight of her career starts, winning two. Most notably, she finished second in all three of her stakes races—the Finest City Stakes (Black Type) at Presque Isle Downs last September, the New York Stallion Series Stakes (Black Type) at Aqueduct in December, and the Busanda Stakes (Black Type) at Aqueduct in January.
In this talented field of eight, Morning Matcha is the best you can get.

Longtime horseracing veteran Robert E. Reid, Jr. trains Morning Matcha for owners LC Racing, Cash is King LLC, and Gary Barber.

Race eight is the Society Hill Stakes, a $100,000 purse, six-furlong run on the dirt track for three-year-old fillies. This might be the tightest race of the day, and I’m banking on the 9/2 fourth-favored Disco Ebo, with Frankie Pennington in the irons.

This filly finished in the money for five of her seven career starts, winning three, including the Shamrock Rose Stakes (Black Type) at Penn National Race Course in November. Even in this evenly matched 11-horse field, she’ll do.

Robert E. Reid, Jr. trains Disco Ebo for owners Cash is King LLC and LC Racing LLC .

Race nine is the Rittenhouse Square Stakes, a $100,000 purse, six-furlong dirt track run for three-year-olds. My money’s on the 72/ morning-line favorite, Dance Code, ridden by veteran jockey Nik Juarez.

This colt finished four of his seven career starts in the money, winning three—including the Parx Juvenile Stakes (Black Type) in December. He also finished third in the Sanford Stakes (Grade III) at Saratoga last July.

Juan C. Vazquez trains Dance Code for Richie’s World Stables LLC.

Race ten is the City of Brotherly Love Stakes, a $100,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles dirt track run for three-year-olds. In a race where the top three contenders (as far as the morning line is concerned) were all also-rans in the Withers Stakes (Grade III) in February, I’m ignoring the not-too-subtle hint and backing a 6/1 sleeper: Beast Or Famine, ridden by top jockey Paco Lopez.

This colt finished in the money four of his five career starts, winning two. He finished second in the James F. Lewis III Stakes (Black Type) at Laurel Park in November and third in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes (Black Type) at Aqueduct last month.

Coming in to this year having spent 2021 tripling her previous record for annual earnings, Penny Pearce trains Beast or Famine for owners J A G Racing and Jettany Thoroughbred Corp.
      Tuesday’s Picks for Sunland Park

We begin on the dirt track with race six, a 6-1/2 furlong allowance race for New Mexico-bred three-year-olds that have never won two races.

Both of the horses I think have a chance in this eight-horse field are late closers, so I’m going to bet on the one slightly more likely to make us happy: the 3/1 morning-line favorite, Corrina Corrina, piloted by veteran jockey Roimes Chirinos.

This filly moneyed four of her five career starts, winning one. She notably finished second out of ten in the Enchantress Stakes here at Sunland in late February.

Longtime horseracing veteran Gary W. Cross trains Corrina Corrina for owner-breeder Derrick W. Jenkins.

Race seven is a six-furlong allowance run on the dirt track for New Mexico-bred three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. I agree with the morning line: Bet the 3/1 favorite, Quantum Bull, ridden by Enrique Portillo Gomez.

This four-year-old gelding finished in the money twice in his six career starts, winning one. Graduating the maiden class back in November, he most recently finished second in an allowance race in February here at Sunland.
While his record is not the greatest, it is sufficient to make Quantum Bull the statistical standout in this unimpressive eight-horse field.

Just starting his second decade in the horseracing business, Danny Morales trains Quantum Bull for owner-breeder Tucumcari Thoroughbreds.

Race nine is a six-furlong allowance run for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have not won a race since June 6 or have never won three races. I have to back the obvious choice here—the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Our Iris Rose, with Roimes Chirinos in the irons.

This five-year-old mare has the best of it statistically, with eleven money finishes in her 14 career starts, four of them wins, including the Memorial Day Sprint Stakes (Black Type) at Lone Star last May.

Todd W. Fincher trains Our Iris Rose for owners Joe R. Peacock, Jr. and Peacock Family Holdings L.P.

One last thing: If Our Iris Rose’s empty schedule for the last ten months concerns you, consider instead a win ticket on the third-favored Staci’s Red Dress, with Enrique Portillo Gomez aboard.

Trained by co-owner Greg Green for himself, R. Dwain Yarbar, and M.C.M Stables, LLC, Staci’s Red Dress moneyed four of her five career starts, winning three.

Race 6 is a 7-furlong assignment for a $53,000 purse on Tuesday afternoon. Look at Tip for Tap and Maybe After Later to put together good work in the stretch run.

Tip for Tap is 3 for 8 and coming off a strong finish on January 17. He is 5th, 6th, 4th, 1st in his previous four attempts.

His most recent race went well, as Tip for Tap defeated Jeopardy James by 3 ¾ lengths in an upset for $25,000. This was an upset, so I don’t know if a hike back up in class is the right move.

Maybe After Later will be right there to pick up on any weakness from Tip for Tap. The colt is 3 for 13 in 16 attempts.

He is 1st, 2nd in his previous two races, with a win on December 28 for a 4 ¼ length victory in a $25,000 event. The colt placed 2nd behind Shooger Ray Too by 2 lengths for $30,000 on January 19.

Maybe After Later is probably the more likely candidate to get this race home to the winner’s circle.

The $100,000 Main Line Stakes covers a mile and 70 yards on the dirt. This looks like a good spot for Early Glow and Morning Matcha.

Early Glow is 9th, 4th, 1st in three races. After continuous improvement, Early Glow finally got there in her third attempt with a 6 ¾ length $80,000 win.

That looked easy for Early Glow after finishing 4th for $80,000 on December 3. It was a fairly big upset for Early Glow to win that race.

Will the filly have another good run in her in a stakes race? Morning Matcha will make it difficult. Morning Matcha is 2 for 8 and consistently getting results.

She is top-3 in eight races, with two solid attempts on December 18 and January 23. Morning Matcha placed 2nd behind Yo Cuz by 1 ¾ lengths in the $500,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes and 2 ¾ lengths in the $100,000 Busanda Stakes.

Morning Matcha should be tough to beat on these terms Tuesday.

The $100,000 Society Hill Stakes covers 6 furlongs on the dirt. Disco Ebo and Rosebug are both going to be tough runners to compete with in Race 8.

Disco Ebo is 3 for 7 and finished 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 5th, 7th in seven attempts. She struck on November 26 in the $200,000 Shamrock Rose Stakes by 5 ¾ lengths.

That was a good one from Disco Ebo, though has to move down in difficulty after finishing 7th in the $100,000 Forward Gal Stakes (Gr. 3) on February 5.

Rosebug is 4th, 2nd, 6th, 1st, 4th in five races. She recorded a 3 ¾ length win on December 30 in an $80,000 purse and then fell off in the Busanda.

Rosebug finished 4th in the $100,000 Busanda Stakes. That was disappointing, but she is capable of much better.

In this one, Rosebug won’t be dealing with the toughest field, so this looks like a winnable chase for the No. 1.

The second race at Sunland Park is a $13,800 event covering 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Spicey Secret and Fi Fi D’oro should be in strong contention for a look at the top prize.

Spicey Secret is winless in ten races and 2nd, 6th, 4th in the previous three outings. Three races back, Spicey Secret came close in a strong bid.

She placed 2nd behind Dani’s Cat and a neck ahead of Fi Fi D’oro. Since that performance, Spicey Secret hasn’t offered much, though.

In her most recent attempt, she finished 4th for an $11,600 purse. Fi Fi D’oro is winless in eight, but the most consistent in the field.

The mare finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd in her previous five attempts. In the last race, she showed 3rd for an $11,600 purse.

Fi Fi D’oro is dependable and in good order going into Tuesday. She catches a fortunate post position. A good look at this mare appears well worth it.

                  Purse:$12,600

The third race at Sunland Park is a $12,600 assignment covering a mile and 70 yards. Race 3 should see Southern Summer and Iza Daddy strike hot in the final furlong.

Southern Summer has three wins in 16 attempts, finishing 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th in his previous six attempts. He is coming off a disappointing showing to go 8th on February 22 for $10,200.

More was expected in that race and believe more is a good possibility today. Iza Daddy is 9 for 56 and in a consistent mood right now.

The gelding is 1st, 1st, 8th, 1st in his previous four starts. In his latest performance, Iza Daddy beat Memory Taker by a length for a $10,100 purse.

This looks like a good spot for Iza Daddy to have another good chance. Without a DQ on November 16 in a $14,500 race, Iza Daddy would be on a four-race win streak entering today.

This appears like a good situation for Iza Daddy.

                  Purse:$39,000

Race 6 covers 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt for a $39,000 purse. Wealth N Health and Corrina Corrina are going to be in good standing for this race.

Wealth N Health is 1st, 2nd in his previous two assignments. He had a 3 length $26,400 win as a first-time runner on New Year’s Eve.

In his next and most recent attempt, Wealth N Health looked sharp to show 3rd for a $32,600 purse. This is going to be just as tough or tougher.

There is certainly value on Wealth N Health being involved for a potential upset, though. Corrina Corrina is 2nd, 4th, 2nd, 1st, 2nd in five attempts.

She is running well and consistent. After defeating Desert Spirit by a head on January 15 for $26,400, Corrina Corrina placed 2nd behind Bella Dona by 1 ½ lengths in the $100,000 Enchantress Stakes on February 20.

She is in fine form in workouts, with times of 47.34 and 47.75 seconds at 4 furlongs. This looks like a good value spot for Corrina Corrina.

Race 1 Swinger: 4-Knave of Diamond and 5-La Fille

Let’s get everyone off to a winning start to the day. This isn’t the strongest field and these two runners stand out and should battle it out for the finish.

The Swinger is the safest option as they both have to face the first three, but you could also look at taking Exactas in either direction – 4×5 and 5×4 – and although in this case they should come first and second. run, rewards will be a lot better.

Race 4 No 11 Irish Rain – Eachway

It is always dangerous when trainer Cliffie Miller uses jockey Marco van Rensburg. This is the case with Irish Rain, which also has the advantage of jumping from a number 1 draw.

Irish Rain opened at 10-1 but there has already been some money for him and he is now trading at 7-1.
