Aqueduct Picks: Agility can handle the logistics on March 13
      By J.N. Campbell

      Aqueduct Picks - Sunday, March 13, 2022

      Race 1: 2-1-6-3
      Race 2: 5-1/1A-3-2
      Race 3: 4-3-1/1A-5
      Race 4: 6-9-4-2
      Race 5: 3-5-1-6
      Race 6: 4-1-5-3
      Race 7: 6-5-3-7
      Race 8: 1-6-7-4
      Race 9: 6-3-9-2
**Most Likely Winner: Badgerville #4 (Race 3)**
**Best Value: Shadolamo #6 (Race 7)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Badgerville #4, 7/2):

The rain and snow have subsided, so we should be racing in some very cold weather on Sunday. Check the track conditions, as always, to see whether “Fast” is even a remote possibility. If you are looking for a sure-fire winner, then Todd Pletcher probably has it on this lazy afternoon. A son of Gormley, and partly-owned by Jim Bakke, this is just another young 3-yr-old in Pletcher’s pack. He debuted back in mid-February, and it was an impressive score. He maintained a nice cruising speed just off the front, and then when Kendrick Carmouche gave the cue, he was off down the lane. I really think this one will not have any regression, second-time-out. No question marks here …

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Shadolamo #6, 10/1):

If you have not watched Jackie Davis ride at Aqueduct, then you have missed out. The wife of Dylan Davis (which has no bearing on her ability), can take over a race … period. I like the mount that she has in the spot because this one used her speed to rule in an open company Clm25k event @AQU on 27 Feb. That mare by Girolamo was a whopping 55/1, and now Eduardo Jones goes with Davis … This looks like another overlay to my eye. Don’t count this rider out. I rarely make a wager based on who the pilot is, but this one, heading into state bred, conditioned company, is a play. Momentum … momentum …

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #6 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 6: Dirt, 7F, Damon Runyon S. $100k, 3 NY Breds):

After the weather day, we are back at it … clear, sunny, but cold at Aqueduct. It is going to be tough to pick a winner outside of Pletcher’s Best Idea #1. This ridgling by Honor Code was $150k, and he did not disappoint when he broke his maiden on debut at Aqueduct back on 12 Feb. Kendrick Carmouche had the mount then, and will again … When Repole and St Elias put together a business deal surrounding a horse, they usually are serious. I did find an entry that piques my interest, and I will be betting this one on top. Jorge Abreu’s Agility #4 looks accomplished already, and this colt by Practical Joke was 2nd in the Rego Park $100k last time. He loses Carmouche in this spot, but gains in securing Trevor McCarthy. The race that impressed me was when he broke his maiden on 5 Dec. Horses at a short price like this one, have some major pressure on them, and the Parkland Thoroughbreds’ charge lived up to the hype. I am going to be betting this one for sure, and this sire is becoming one of my favorites to back … it’s a bet!

      Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 4 w 1

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Sunday, March 13
Posted on March 12, 2022 by David Aragona

            RACE 4: HARDLY WORKING (#7)

I’m not exactly against favorite #9 Tamburro’s Sox, though I do try to pick against horses like this in general. He’s had his chances at this level and has settled for minor awards in each of his last few starts. Yet I do want to give him credit for showing subtle improvement in each of his starts this winter. I actually though he ran well last time despite fading to lose by nearly 5 lengths. The pace was fast and he battled gamely with a well meant first time starter into deep stretch. He’s drawn well to the outside this time and will win if others fail to step forward. However, there are some rivals with upside. Some will give a shot to #2 Street Culture, but I’m skeptical of this 4-year-old. He was gunned out of the gate last time in his return for Linda Rice, but ended up setting a pretty slow pace before backing up. He’s getting class relief, but I question his overall ability. I briefly considered #8 How You Feeling, but I’m not a fan of the race he exits. I ultimately decided that if I was going to take a second time starter, I’d rather it be #7 Hardly Working at a better price. This colt was off to a tangled start in his debut, getting affected by a runner to his inside who lost the rider. He then briefly raced in contention before fading. He’s been given some time since then and now returns with blinkers added. Rudy Rodriguez is 10 for 34 (29%, $2.58 ROI) with second time starters adding blinkers in maiden claiming races on the dirt over the past 5 years.

            RACE 7: EPONA’S DREAM (#3)

I didn’t pick her on top, but I do think #5 Wasp is an intriguing runner in this NY-bred optional claimer. It feels like her last race was just a prep going 6 furlongs, which is too short for her. She was also 4-wide on a day when you were probably better off being placed inside. She’s capable of better than that result, but she’s still Wasp. What I mean by that is she’s disappointed at short prices many times in her career, and has never really lived up to the hype surrounding her. She’s playable at the right price, but I’m not eager to land on her. Three of the main contenders in this race exit a Feb. 18 event at this same level. #7 Khali Magic achieved the best result that day, checking in third after making the first move into a strong pace. She may have run the best race of all, and is just in great form right now. I’m not against her, but I do prefer #3 Epona’s Dream from that affair. She had to wait for running room at a critical juncture on the far turn, subtly losing momentum to the eventual winner when waiting in behind horses. She never really picked up until the final sixteenth but was finishing at the end. This filly rarely puts top efforts back-to-back, and has an up-and-down pattern to her form. While there isn’t a ton of speed signed on, the presence of sprinter Quality Stones and the aggressive Jackie Davis on Shadolamo could help this pace to come apart. That would benefit Epona’s Dream, and I do believe she’s capable of an effort that will beat this field. Some may also consider #1 Ifihadachance. She didn’t run that badly off the layoff last time, flattening out late after contesting the pace inside. I do wonder if she can get back to her best form from last year, as she was somewhat opportunistic when she achieved her best results. Yet she’s hardly out of this and could be a decent price.

            RACE 8: TACO BEAN (#2)

A repeat of the 109 TimeformUS Speed Figure that #6 Saint Selby earned last June will obviously make him awfully tough for this field to handle. However, this gelding has many questions to answer as he returns from a lengthy layoff. That flashy speed figure seems pretty legitimate as horses behind Saint Selby came back to validate the number. However, he did get a great trip, riding a strong rail most of the way. He can regress and still beat this group, but one has to wonder if he’ll return as the same horse. Rob Atras is 2 for 21 (10%, $0.51 ROI) off layoffs of 180 days or more on dirt over the past 5 years. Plus, there’s other speed for him to deal with this time. A few horses exit a Feb. 13 race at this level, and I’m not particularly fond of any of them. #3 Storm Shooter was possibly too close to the rail when more aggressively ridden second off the layoff. However, he faded badly that day and has never been the easiest horse to trust. He also has a tendency to get overbet as a MyRacehorse runner. #4 Big Brown Shoes is a little more appealing. Though he got a better trip last time, I thought he showed that he’s rounding back into form. He actually ran deceptively well in his prior race on this circuit back on Dec. 18, and he’s capable of coming from just off the pace. I see a ton of speed signed on here and few closers from which to choose. This feels like a race that could produce a wacky result, so I’m going to get a little creative. My top pick is #2 Taco Bean. This horse never gets any respect on the tote board, but he’s actually been earning speed figures that are on par with all of the contenders, save Saint Selby. He’s clearly in career form right now for Pat Kelly, and I’m encouraged that he’s adapted his running style to come from just off the pace in his last couple of starts. He didn’t finish that far behind a couple of runners who would be strong contenders in this spot when he last ran on Feb. 26. And he figures to be a generous price again with Mike Luzzi riding, despite the fact that he’s ridden this gelding well.

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, and Santa Anita for March 13, 2022
              By: Jared Welch

It’s another Sunday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the late sequence on the card! We will also have full card selections for Oaklawn Park and Santa Anita for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s see if we can get this home today.

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

              Gulfstream Park March 13, 2022

              Race 8: Maiden Claiming

#5 Mitico will drop down to the maiden claiming ranks again today, which was where he finished second over this track two starts back. #9 Mr. Extension gets back to the dirt for this race after a couple of poor efforts over the turf, and also will drop down in class.

              Race 9: Allowance Optional Claiming
              freestar

#1 Skyro won off of a layoff at this level last time out, and should move forward off of that effort today. #2 Proven Strategies ran fifth off of a layoff last time out over this track and class level, but should improve in this race today.

              Race 10: Claiming

#2 Laras Lady has run second at this level in two straight starts, and runs for Saffie for the first time today, which should improve her chances. #5 Pronta moves back to the dirt for this race after winning over the synthetic surface last time out.

              Race 11: Maiden Special Weight

#8 Silvery Rill returns off of a long layoff today; however, she has run a couple of nice races that will be good enough to win in this spot. #5 Personal Best debuts in this spot with a solid workout pattern, and gets Jose Ortiz aboard, which is a good sign.

              THE TICKET

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (March 13)

There is racing at both Seoul (11 races from 10:45 to 18:00) and Busan (6 races from 12:00 to 16:50) on Sunday. All betting locations are open (except the Daegu branch), however, attendance must be pre-booked using the MyCard app. Here are the previews:

                Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens open the program. (3) GOLDEN THUNDER looks the one to beat, having improved to 2nd place at start number two on February 13th when beating three of today’s rivals with an on-pace showing at this distance. He draws better today, should be on the speed again, and can win. (6) THE FAVORITE didn’t run on at her latest start in January. She had hinted at some ability in her three prior starts though, showing a bit of speed and is worth another chance here. There are two debut-makers and of the pair, (8) STAR RACER caught the eye in his trial, crossing the line well ahead of the rest. The time wasn’t fast but in generally, trials have been slowly run of late and he can make an immediate impact first-up. (12) PURPLE STORM and (11) SIRIUS ALPHA others who can find the minor money.
Selections (3) Golden Thunder (6) The Favorite (8) Star Racer (12) Purple Storm
                Next Best 11, 1
                Fast Start 2, 3, 8, 11

                Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maiden fillies here. We’ll take a chance on one of the two first-timer starters, (4) TIZ SUCCESS. She went through two trials, significantly improving in the second of them, running through the line very well in a good time. She draws well here and looks right in this. (6) MENI SPEAR will probably start as favourite. She ran 4th on debut and then improved to 2nd at start number two, both over 1000M. Her style so far has been to be on pace, something she is well drawn to do again, and she will be in this a long way. (2) BE FLOWER also comes up in trip having run 3rd in both starts so far. The extra furlong can suit today. (11) GORGEOUS SERVE took an age to get into stride on debut but should have come on for that and be given another chance here. Similarly (3) BLOOD MOON beat a couple of today’s rivals when running on for 6th place. She has a better draw today and can be competitive.
Selections (4) Tiz Success (6) Meni Spear (2) Be Flower (11) Gorgeous Serve
                Next Best 3, 10
                Fast Start 2, 4, 6, 10

                Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

It’s hard to go too far past (10) BE CRAZY here. He comes back to this distance following two good spins over 1300M which yielded a 3rd and a 4th. He doesn’t draw ideally but should have enough early speed to navigate his way to the front and from then on will be very much the one to beat. (9) SOARA DAERO has a 2nd and two 5ths in three prior outings and has registered the fastest time of any of these at the distance along the way. He too has good early speed and can sit on pace or handy here and can be a danger. (6) EUNHYE DREAM has made progress in her latest two with a 3rd and a 4th, both times coming from off the pace and making up good ground late. Expect similar here. (12) RAON THE WILD and (8) BADAUI KKUM have mixed their form, but both have hinted at ability and could make the minor money in this company.

                Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Small but competitive field here. (7) EUNSEONG WINNER could be ready to win. She has two 3rd place finishes from her three starts to date, including her latest on February 20th when she came from well back to run on well over 1200M. The slight step up in trip can suit and Franco Da Silva remains aboard. (3) B.K. NEW MOON was an improved 2nd at her second outing on February 13th over 1200M. She recorded a fair time and is another who may suit the slightly extended trip today. (1) WONDERFUL CUTIE came home in 6th place behind Eunseong Winner on her most recent appearance but two starts back was runner-up over 1000M. She is nicely drawn on the inside here and looks to have at least placing claims. (6) HONOR’S MARGAUX and (5) HAPPY SONG SONG have the potential to improve.

                (8) SONGAM RACER enters off his best finish to date when 3rd over 1300M, running on well. Like five others, he tackles this trip for the first time and his running style suggests that it can suit with him expected to sit off the pace here and then finish strongly. He could be too good. (7) BLACK INDY looked very much as though he needed the run when well back over 1400M on January 29th, on what was his first start since last June. He drew very wide that day so had plenty of excuses and with a bit of natural improvement from that run, can be much more competitive today. (4) POSA POSA comes back in trip following a couple of tries around two turns. This should suit a little more and he can aim to at least repeat the 3rd place he scored at 1300M last December. (9) APPLE MINT and (1) M J STORM are others who can enter the equation.

                (8) SAEROUN HAMAN has impressed in two starts so far, running 5th and 3rd over 1000M and 1200M and at his latest came from off the pace to run on very pleasingly. He comes up slightly in trip today and it could be what he needs to come out on top. (3) GREAT ONE comes back in trip after strong of runs at a mile, including his best finish to date of 2nd two starts back and has run fairly at this distance so in this company, can be considered. (6) DAEHO NURI comes up in trip after some adequate showings over 1200M including a 3rd place two starts back in a decent time. His running style has generally been to go back and run on so it may well suit here. (1) AGAIN HELEN and (7) SOUTHERN KING are others who may be considered for the minor money.

                Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

A big field and a competitive race here. (4) SHOWMAKER could be working her way towards a second victory. She enters off the back of two consecutive 3rd place finishes, both at this class, over 1400M and 1300M. She has good early speed compared with most oof her rivals here so can use a good draw to get a little further forward today and may go all the way. (6) HYPER CAR is potentially the betting favourite. He did well at this attest start to overcome gate fourteen to run 5th at class and distance and the time before ran a good 2nd. His times at the distance are consistent and while he remains a maiden after fourteen attempts, that could change here. (12) WANGINGHAENGCHA beat Hyper Car on his way to 3rd place last time out at class and distance. He has trialed up adequately since then and could be in line for another place here. (2) EUNHYE CHUNGMAN and (7) CURRERECUS are others who enter the calculations.

                (7) CHEONGHO LEADER came from well back to run 3rd at this class over 1400M on February 13th. He is yet to win in twelve starts but has eight top-five finishes to his name including some good showings at today’s distance and is the one to beat here. (1) ADELE BOSS put in a slightly disappointing performance on his latest outing on February 13th. That was his first try at a mile and hopefully he will have progressed for it as he had shown some ability at 1400M. Perovic climbs aboard, and he can be given another chance. (4) AFLEET TAPIT is a winner at his class over 1400M and has a 4th place at this distance to his name too. He draws nicely and will be expected to settle back and run on here. (2) SUN MOUNTAIN and (3) HANEUL JEONSA are others who can be considered.

                (1) BAEKDU GIRL is set to be the favourite here, having won well on debut before coming up a little short in 3rd place when sent off as well-backed on her first try at this class over 1200M on February 13th. She carries a light weight here, draws nicely on the inside and should be too strong. (7) WONPYEONG COD was a winner on debut on January 29th, making all over the 1000M in a fair time. He hasn’t raced since then but looked well enough when trialing up a week ago and while he is up in trip and in class, he should be able to measure up. (3) REMARKABLE has plenty of experience at this level and she has been closer in her latest three than the two 4ths and 5th suggest on paper. She can be on pace in this company and be in it a long way. (8) STAR RUSH remains a maiden after twenty attempts but knows how to find the minor money in this type of race, while similarly (2) RULES CLASS shouldn’t be too far away.

                (9) CATCH THE VICTORY looks hard to beat. A class 5 winner over this distance two starts back, he then nearly led all the way on his first try at this level on February 13th, ultimately finishing in 2nd place and beating plenty of today’s rivals. That was a handicap and today’s conditions mean that he actually carries less weight. He will be close to the pace, if not necessarily leading, from the start and he can win. (11) DOCTOR CAESAR won his first two races last summer but seemingly lost his way a little at the tail end of his juvenile year and into January. He looked very well when winning a February trial and with Perovic aboard, could be ready for a fresh start here. (7) BUSANHANG GALMAEGI came home a slightly disappointing 6th in that February 13th race behind Catch The Victory. He has run consistent, if unspectacular, times at this distance and should be competitive here. (12) SAGARMATHA and (1) MINYEOBONG among others with claims.

Fillies and mares only here. (2) PURPLE K was slightly disappointing at her latest start in January when 6th of fourteen over this distance but had previously shown ability with some solid times at this distance She draws well to get to the lead here and can potentially go all the way. (9) BEST TORCH was a winner on debut over 1000M in January before overcoming gate fourteen to run 2nd at class and distance on February 13th (beating Baekdu Girl, who ran in race 6). She comes up a little in the weights, but the smaller field should negate the wide draw and she can go very close. (10) COMPLETE TIME returns to action for the first time since Christmas Day. She had previously shown plenty of speed and looked well when leading a trial in February, ultimately crossing the line in 3rd. (5) HAMPYEONG NABI comes up in class and in distance having made all on debut for a comfortable win over 1000M. The Hansen filly can measure up in this company. (2) ECOPIA has a good record at this distance and while she only managed 6thon her first try at this level on January 28th, and comes up in the weights, Franco Da Silva, who has won on her, climbs back aboard and from a nice draw she has a chance. That would mean overturning the form on (11) ECHO SUN, who ran 2nd in that January race before beating three of these on his way to 3rd place again at class and distance on February 20th. He has led in both those outings and while it won’t be so easy for him to get to the speed here, he surely has claims. (6) WONDERFUL KING is a class and distance winner and while he comes up 3kg on his latest start, Perovic is on today and he is sure to be a big threat. (3) MUJEOK BULPAE and (9) STAR EYE are the other logical placing contenders.

                (4) MIGHTY WELL races for the first time since early December but he was in good form before the layoff with a win and a runner-up at this class and distance. That puts him at the very top of the weights here and it won’t be an easy task first-up, but his class can see him through. (8) CHEONBISEONG is the big danger. He comes up in trip but significantly down in weight to a mark which should see him very competitive. Expect him to be close to the pace here and in this a long way. (5) CHEONNYEONUI BARAM comes in following a much-improved 2nd place at class and distance on February 20th when he was handy to the lead throughout. He too is nicely weighted here and can challenge again. (6) JEONGSANG KINGDOM tends to get a bit far back in his races but does usually run on and is another down in the weights today. (1) YAMUJIN DOKDO the best of the rest.

Remarkably (8) TOUCH STAR MAN hasn’t won since claiming the Minister’s Cup, the final leg of the 2020 Triple Crown, having already won the KRA Cup Mile and finishing 5th in the Derby. He’s been beaten by some good types since though and his last three races have been in top class company at Seoul including an outstanding 2nd place in the Grand Prix Stakes at 2300 and then 4th in the Segye Ilbo Cup at 1200M, showing his versatility. Down in weights, and with Perovic up, today can be his day. Don’t rule out (1) ALPHAKING IJI though. He has run super times at the distance and today draws the inside gate under a very light weight. He will be in the finish. (11) WINNER’S MAN won the Korean Derby in 2021 and while he hasn’t raced since his 5th place in the Minister’s Cup, he looked very sharp when winning a trial in late February. He too is very nicely weighted and surely goes well. Stablemates (7) THE SABER and (2) PRO CONSUL are others who can go well.

Good race with plenty entering in form. It’s fair to say (8) MIGHTY BOOM doesn’t win out of turn but he has eleven top-four finishes from twelve starts. His latest two outings have been at 1400M, but he has run formidable times at this trip too and he can sit off the pace here before proving too strong late on. (1) OXFORD KING’s latest two outings have been disappointing but both times from wide draws he has struggled to find position. He has a much better gate today and should be much more able to show his ability. (5) RAON FASHION is a class and distance winner and is another who has run some excellent times at the distance. He is set to be on pace here and can be in this a long way. (9) COBRA BALL returns from five months out and while he offered hew clues in his trial, he has a lot of quality abut him and has won first-up before. (3) SHARK JJANG another in the placing hunt.

                (1) LAPIEO BAN had a challenging day at the office at his latest start on Christmas Day over 1800M when he was caught three-wide with no cover and came back with some speedy cuts. She comes back to 1700M here, draws the inside, and is worth another chance. (11) RUBICON beat Lapieo Ban as the pair came home 1st and 2nd at class and distance last November when she managed to cross to lead from gate twelve. She then had a hard time in the Gyeonggi Governor’s Cup over 2000M in December but looked sharp and fit when trialing in February. She needs to lead but has proven herself capable of overcoming wide draws and can be a big danger. (8) GRAY CAT managed a solid class and distance 3rd place at his latest start on February 12th, beating a couple of today’s rivals in the process and can be taken seriously here too. (2) GEUMA SUPEME and (3) CHEONJI POKPUNG are others in the hunt.

                (7) SUPER SOCKS won at class and distance in December and while he has subsequently finished 5th in two outings over 2000M, he comes back in trip here and under a light weight, he can return to the winner’s circle today. That gives him an 8kg advantage over the class horse of the race, (4) TIZ PLAN. Two starts back he finished a big 2nd in the Owners’ Cup at Busan and his quality may see him through here but it is a big ask to give such an amount of weight away to good horses and he may have to settle for 2nd place again. (8) CARVING CROSS made a meteoric rise last year but stalled once he ran into the elite although his 6th place in the President’s Cup was by no means a bad run. This is his first time around two-tuns in a class 1 handicap and he can show he is competitive. (6) ANOTHER SMART ONE and (9) GANGTOMA are others with placing chances.

“What You Need to Know” - Santa Anita
By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TOC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
                  *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100-point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

                  Single: 3-Edgeway

Forecast: Edgeway (TOC=3/5; ML=4/5) finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint-G1 two races back and then easily defeated subsequent Santa Monica S.-G2 winner Merneith in the listed Kalookan Queen S. in early January. The J. Sadler-trained mare is a perfect two-for-two over the Santa Anita main track and has won six of 10 overall. Additionally, she has proven winning form off a layoff and her works are outstanding. It all adds up to a logical short-priced rolling exotic single in a race that we’ll otherwise pass.

                  Single: 3-Allaboutthemoney

Forecast: This restricted (nw-2) $25,000 claimer for older horses drew just five runners. Allaboutthemoney (TOC=7/5; ML=9/5) finally graduated in a bottom-rung affair in his eighth career start last September and then disappeared. He returns waiver protected for the blazingly hot V. Cerin barn with a steady series of workouts that should have him fit and ready. On pure numbers, he’s fast enough to win, assuming he returns as well as he left. We’ll use him as a rolling exotic single and in the win pool at or near his morning line of 9/5.

                  Single: 6-Clampett; 5-Arrabiata

Forecast: Four of the seven entrants in this starter optional claimer for 3-year-olds exit the same race February 19 that was won by Con on the Run. It was a strong heat for the level, so it would not be surprising to see the winner of this event come from that group. Clampett (TOC=8/5; ML=3-1) has rising speed figures and earned a career top when second in that sprint, and nothing more will be needed to land the M. Glatt-trained colt in the winner’s circle. It seems probable, based on our pace projections, that the son of Flatter will be on the lead or in a comfortable stalking position outside, and in either case he should have every chance to seal the deal. Arrabiata ((TOC=2-1; ML=5/2) appears to have found a home on turf. He earned a career top speed figure when third over a mile last time out and showed he could sprint when graduating at first asking from far off the pace at Los Alamitos in his debut.

                  Single: 4-With This Vow

Forecast: Here’s another five-runner event, a starter optional claiming main track miler for fillies and mares. With This Vow (TOC=3-1; ML=5/2) stretches out for the first time, and as a daughter of Broken Vow certainly has the pedigree to handle two-turns, especially in her career first try after three recent sprints to sharpen her speed. She seems certain to inherit the role as the controlling speed, and in a race with suspect closers the R. Ellis-trained mare should have every chance to dominate from gate to wire. With the positive jockey switch to A. Cedilllo, she looks solid in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics at or near her morning line of 5/2.

Use (in order of preference): 8-Thrive

Forecast: Bottom rung maiden claimers meet over a mile in the first leg of the late Pick-4, with Thrive having the distinction of being something in a nothing race. The M. McCarthy-trained gelding obviously is being culled from the stable after a series of money-burning performances in much tougher straight maiden events, so against this group the son of Competitive Edge should make the running and never look back. However, he offers no value at 6/5 on the morning line, so as untrustworthy as he’s been in five previous starts you can use him as a rolling exotic single or better yet just pass the race.

Use (in order of preference): 3-Royal Address; 2-Big Sweep

Forecast: Second-level allowance fillies and mares sprint down the Hillside course in a race with two major players. Royal Address (TOC=2-1: ML=2-1) finished a strong runner-up over this course and distance vs. similar last time out and repeat of that race today probably will be good enough. She’s yet to record her first North American victory but today could be her day if she receives the patient ride that she apparently prefers. Big Sweep (TOC=7/2; ML=5/2) is a little light in the speed figure department, but she’s certainly bred for grass (Mr. Big) and only has one prior start on the lawn, and that was around two turns. She has good tactical speed and room for improvement, and after winning an optional claimer on dirt last month she’s tackles tougher while retaining F. Prat. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with the preference on top to Royal Address.

Use (in order of preference): 6-Smiling Goodbye; 1-Forgotten Vows;,5-Arthur Spooner

Forecast: State-bred maiden $50,000 claimers sprint six furlongs, with the second-time starter Smiling Goodbye likely to step forward after flashing speed and before weakening late when winding up fourth in his debut vs. similar in mid-January. The D. Pederson-trained gelding retains A. Cedillo, shows a healthy work pattern since raced, and probably has more room for improvement than the other logical contenders. At 4-1 on the morning line, he offers a bit of a gamble. Forgotten Ways outran his 13-1 odds when finishing second vs. maiden $25,000 foes last month and is another that could improve in his second career start. We’ll take the raise in class as a sign of confidence. Arthur Spooner, beaten a nose in the same race Smiling Goodbye exits, was making his eighth career start, so he is what he is. V. Espinoza knows him well and stays aboard.

Use (in order of preference): 7-Vivando; 5-Scenic Masterpiece; 8-Countess Rosina

Forecast: The nightcap is a maiden turf sprint for fillies and mares that offers three possibilities. Vivando ran well in her debut when overcoming a slow break from the rail to finish a solid runner-up in a race that earned a solid number, so with that bit of experience behind her the daughter of Twirling Candy has a right to step forward. Also, the J. Sadler barn has superb stats (28%) with this second-time starter angle. Scenic Masterpiece also displayed promise in her debut when finishing third after a tardy break, and like our top pick seems likely to produce a significant forward move for the J. Wong barn, which does well with second time starting maidens (20%). Countess Rosina is a dangerous European import form the J. Mullins barn and. Second at 66-1 in her only start last summer in a good maiden juvenile affair at Newmarket in England, she attracts F. Prat, is comfortably drawn outside, and shows a moderate but steady main track work tab that should have her fit enough.

#8 Spectrolite I don't love the drop here while in consistent fading form, but this is probably where he needs to be right now, and he has run okay on the dirt in the past. Thinking he might be the only seriously committed early burner. Runs them off their feet today?
#9 The Gray Blur He's a really good fit with this kind, but he doesn't have a whole lot of early pace and might not get the right kind of setup. Obvious exotics player.
#10 Landofthepharaohs He turns back for this one after failing to pick up late in those recent route tries and maybe the move back around one turn will wake him up a little bit to come from off the pace for a piece.
Race Summary Spectrolite has dangerous pace in a race where most of them tend to track or chase the splits, and he may be able to discourage the rest of these as he gets down in class for the first time in a long time.

                    Fair Grounds - Race #6
                    Picks Notes
#8 Mr. Peterkin I like the way he stepped up in that first start against winners, proving a really good fit at this level. Something similar might get the job done, and he might be able to get a slight jump on the deeper .
#6 Hot Stove League Can't argue too much with this guy's form, but I worry that he has a really bad habit of giving away ground, and I also wonder how long he's going to continue to hold his form off the claim.
#10 Leroy Jenkins His form is dreadful, but he has been in with some much tougher groups in his recent tries. He's obviously one to consider if this comes over to the main.
Race Summary Mr. Peterkin should get a decent run here, and I always like when a maiden winner is able to step up and compete immediately at a reasonable level with winners.

                    Fair Grounds - Race #8
                    Picks Notes
#6 Blissful Change There isn't a ton of super serious early pace signed on in this one, and she was just a really nice winner to clear her early pace might keep her in the driver’s seat from the start in here while prompting whatever pace there is.
#2 Inajiffy Think this barn has a big claim on this one, as she woke up nicely when dropping out of stakes company last time out. Worry that her stablemate isn't going to get her the right setup, but she's a late threat all the same.
#1A Ready for Change She's a pretty honest type, and she has the positional pace to work out a good trip with these. The main issue is that she's typically in a great spot in the lane but can't punch home.
Race Summary Blissful Change should get a perfect trip right up on the splits, and that should give her the jump on some solid finishing threats, including her rail-drawn stablemate.

                      Purse:$106,000

Race 4 is a $106,000 event over 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. This looks like a Warrior’s Battle and Interstatedaydream race.

Interstatedaydream is 1st, 2nd in two races, with a winning run as a rookie on June 25 and then did well in the $200,000 Adirondack Stakes (Gr. 2) for 2nd.

She was strong on debut, as Interstatedaydream had a win by a head for $90,000.

Insterstatedaydream failed to follow up in her graded debut, but in fine form to place 2nd behind Wicked Halo by 3 ½ lengths in the $200,000 Adirondack Stakes (Gr. 2).

Warrior’s Battle will be a big challenger in this one. The filly is 3 for 5 finishing 3rd, 4th, 1st, 1st, 1st, and looking for more after a hat-trick.

The No. 1 is coming off a 9 ¾ length win for a $50,000 win on January 22. This followed a 4 length $44,000 win for Warrior’s Battle.

It has been too easy for Warrior’s Battle thus far, so a $106,000 event looks right. If Warrior’s Battle runs how she did in the 9 ¾ length win, this is a good spot.

Race 5 covers 1 1/16 miles on the dirt for $34,000. Purrfect Mistress and Burrow Down are going to be tough at this level.

Purrfect Mistress is winless in six attempts finishing 5th, 6th, 4th, 8th, 2nd, 5th. The filly had her best race two races back, placing 2nd behind Red Queen by 2 lengths for $30,000.

In her latest appearance, Purrfect Mistress was 5th in a $30,000 event. That was discouraging after the solid outing. Purrfect Mistress can bounce back from that defeat, though.

Burrow Down is winless in seven races, with finishes of 2nd, 6th, 6th, 2nd in his last four races. In the last race, Burrow Down placed 2nd behind Big Java by a half-length for $30,000.

This was a solid effort from Burrow Down after going 6th on January 8 in a $35,000 assignment. Noted improvement was made.

The No. 5 has to be considered with greater improvement possible.

                      Distance:6 Furlongs
                      Purse:$90,000

Race 9 covers 6 furlongs on the dirt for a $90,000 purse. Look for Mean Jakey and Slim Man to catch on in this assignment.

Mean Jakey is winless in two attempts, finishing 3rd, 6th in two assignments. In his first outing, Mean Jakey looked good, showing 3rd for a $120,000 event on October 2.

Following that solid debut, Mean Jakey returned on October 31 and dropped to 6th. A grade drop to $90,000 is understandable.

Slim Man has placed 2nd in two races. He is looking for one spot better on Sunday.

Slim Man placed 2nd behind Pressure by 1 ¼ lengths in an $84,000 race and then 3 ½ lengths most recently on January 29. Minor improvement from Slim Man is likely enough versus a field like this.

DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, March 13, 2022
                        DRF StaffMar 12, 2022

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:44 TAM 2nd AUBURN (#2, 8-1) hasn't been close since the easy win against non-winners of two back in January but all three of those losses were routes, and she had excuses in them all (synthetic surface at Gulfstream, on the lead when she is best rating two back and against the race flow in her latest); has license to rebound today back in a sprint. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:04 GP 2nd Phenomenal display of horsemanship by Miguel Vasquez in getting BITTY BABY (#3, 5-1) to finish 3rd in the 2/17 opener when the filly bobbled badly entering the clubhouse turn, causing the jockey to lose his irons; how they eventually passed so many rivals probably a testament to the 'try' she's got in her; edge here on the subtle class drop into a soft group of bottom-level mdn.-claiming all-weather routers. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:33 GP 3rd Surely AMERICAN MATTERS (#7, 7-2) was in dire need of the 2/16 race when returning from a layoff of nearly 11 months; cut in half today by Hess when favorably drawn in the open-air outside box, he can go much deeper into the lane when leading these bottom-level N2L sprinters on their merry way. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:12 LRL 4th CAPITAN FOFO (#5, 10-1) has lots of minor awards on his page, but perhaps he aimed a bit too high when entered for the dime in first off the claim. Bumped hard leaving the gate, he moved up to set a reasonable pace along the inside before beginning to tire at the five-sixteenths pole. While he's likely best when able to make the lead, think he can sit a good trip from just off the speeds. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:15 TAM 5th HONOR THAT (#4, 6-1) makes her turf debut but she's kin to six runners who scored on the grass, including stakes winner Bel Air Beauty, who earned over $128K on this surface; this filly pressed the pace and held the show in a race that set up well for the closers last time and she'll be tough to reel in if she can shake loose today. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:42 LRL 5th SHINELIKEADIAMOND's (#1, 8-1) dam won four sprints and is a half-sister to multiple stakes-winning turfer Monster Sleeping, and stakes-placed dirt sprinters Tough Talkin Lady and Military Courage. Several works match up with Keefe's Cush Effect (scheduled to debut on Saturday). Perhaps they went in company. Barn not known for debut success, but they sent out live firsters Smart Eulee (second at 6 to 1) and Goldenize (second at 21 to 1) this year. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:45 TAM 6th CONDEMNATION (#7, 5-1) doesn't have the best of Beyers but he does have a very nice string of works showing for his first start since August, and he can be expected to take a big step forward, if that work tab is any indication; he returns from the layoff making his first start as a gelding, and those impressive breezes suggest he could be a new horse in 2022. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:52 AQU 4th STREET CULTURE (#2, 5-1) debuted here last winter for Chad Brown vs. MSW rivals going a mile, where he raced very greenly to no avail; returned from a long layoff last time on the drop and showed improved speed ahead of fellow class-dropped Mr. Buckley, before tiring badly in the stretch; cuts back to six and drops again looking to improve. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:23 AQU 5th BALTASAR (#1, 3-1) faced a very tough field at Saratoga in his second start and came up completely empty after chasing wide; stretched out when last seen at Monmouth and was unrateable on the lead before getting run over around the turn; new gelding cuts back and drops for his return while switching to Atras. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:35 GP 7th A bit outside the box perhaps when tabbing ARCHER ROAD (#6, 15-1) in this first leg of the late pick 5 as the Arindel homebred has gone some 3 1/2 years without visiting the circle; still, there's a ton of speed in this two-turn turfer that might very well set the table for a closer such as him; barn's numbers are way down this meet, but Alvarado been known to win when least expected; wide-open one, anyway. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:00 SA 2nd TOO LATE (#1, 5-2) got into some early trouble last out in a similar $25k claiming N2L sprint, and finished last in his first start since being gelded. He gets a rider switch to Abel Cedillo, stays at the same class level for a leading stable following a fast recent work at San Luis Rey, and merits one final shot. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:25 AQU 7th IFIHADACHANCE (#1, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:38 GP 9th If not for an extraordinary effort by Wolfie's Dynaghost in his $43 upset on the Pegasus undercard, the heroics would've belonged to JOURNEYMAN (#7, 9-2), who overcame the 11-hole to nearly win that highly competitive handicap on the synth at a $41 mutuel; graded out well with the 91 Beyer and has trained along steadily in the interim for the younger of The Training Klesaris Brothers. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:04 OP 7th TAPIT RIGHT (#1, 6-1) makes the move to two turns and she gets pedigree support for the task. Also like that she was third behind Connie K two back, as that one has since won a stakes, the Downthedustyroad, at Oaklawn. TAPIT RIGHT is a half-sister to stakes winner Georgia's Reward ($207K). -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:39 OP 8th The graded stakes winners WELLS BAYOU (#5, 4-1) and BACKGROUND (#7, 6-1) both pick up more distance for their second starts of the year in this mile and a sixteenth allowance feature and the added real estate would seem to serve their causes. -Mary Rampellini

I'll take my chances with the Knicks as a 6-point road dog against the Nets on Sunday. New York has been playing well of late, covering the number in each of their last 5 games. The only outright losses coming by just 1-point at Phoenix and by 4 at Memphis.
This is also an ideal spot to fade the Nets. With the game being played in Brooklyn, that means no Kyrie, which is a big loss with Simmons still not quite ready to play. You also have the Nets coming off that huge game at Philly against their old teammate in James Harden. Will be tough for Brooklyn to match the energy level of the Knicks in this one. Give me New York +6!
