Top Horse Racing Picks for Thursday, March 17, 2022

Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, and Turfway Park each offered up a single morning-line favorite for me to tout, but the rest of my horse racing picks were all solid underdogs, including a couple of sleepers courtesy of Oaklawn and Gulfstream.

My Thursday Picks for Gulfstream Park

We’ll begin on the main track with race four, a seven-furlong starter optional claiming race for three-year-old fillies. I like the morning-line favorite for this race: Del Rey Dolly, ridden by top jockey Edwin Gonzalez.

This filly has the best of it in this six-horse field: Six money finishes in nine career starts, four of them wins, including her last three. Even though the morning-line odds suggest a tight race, she’s got a formidable statistical edge.

Forty-year horse racing veteran Mary E. Eppler trains Del Rey Dolly for her own Mary E. Eppler Racing Stable, Inc.

Let’s moving to the turf course for race five, a 7-1/2 furlong run for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races. My money’s on the third-favored (at 4/1) Centsational, piloted by Miguel Angel Vasquez.

This five-year-old mare finished in the money three of her four career starts, winning her initial maiden attempt, then going on to finish third in two claiming races.
She also finished fourth out of nine in a one-mile turf race here at Gulfstream earlier this month, taking an early lead at the break, only to weaken in the final stretch. This shorter distance and level of competition should work to her advantage.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers for both wins and earnings for the last two years, Carlos A. David trains Centsational for Palm Beach Racing.

Race eight is a one-mile allowance optional claiming run in the turf for Florida-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper Lookinlikeaqueen, with veteran jockey Junior Alvarado in the irons.

The statistical standout in this 11-horse field, this six-year-old mare finished 19 of her 38 career starts in the money, winning seven.

Thursday’s Picks for Oaklawn Park

Let’s start on the dirt track with race one, a six-furlong claiming run for Arkansas-bred three-year-olds and upward. Surprisingly, this eight-horse field doesn’t have much to offer the punter, but I do think there’s a chance of victory for the third-favored (at 9/2) Smarty Grimes, with Cristian A. Torres aboard.

This five-year-old gelding moneyed 12 of his 34 career starts, winning five, including his most recent, a claiming race here at Oaklawn in January.
Yes, I see that J. E.’s Handmedown—the morning-line favorite—has experience at the stakes level, but he hasn’t won a race since 2019. My money stays on Smarty Grimes.

Regularly ranked in the top 100 trainers for wins, earnings, or both since 2014, Federico Villafranco trains Smarty Grimes for owner Danny R. Caldwell.

Race seven is a 1-1/16 miles claiming race on the dirt track for three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. I’m buying a win ticket on the 6/1 sleeper, Call of Honor, piloted by top jockey Ramon A. Vazquez.

This four-year-old colt finished in the money two of his six career starts, both of them wins. He broke his maiden at Keeneland last October, then aced a claiming race at Oaklawn in January.

Scott E. Young trains Call of Honor for owners Rusty Taylor, Debbie Lou Taylor, and Todd Knoedl.

Race eight is a 1-1/2 mile allowance race for three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. I’m sticking with the 3/1 morning line favorite, Super Constitution, ridden by Luis Contreras.

This five-year-old gelding has proven undaunted by the longer races, and his stats put him in the spotlight, as well: Eleven money finishes in 16 career starts, with two wins.

Thursday Horse Racing Picks for Turfway Park

We’ll start on the all-weather track with race four, a 6-1/2 furlong claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races. I’m buying a win ticket on the 5/1 underdog, Cotia, with Thiago Canuto in the irons.

This four-year-old filly won her single career start earlier this month here at Oaklawn Park, so she’s had little time since to develop bad habits, such as finishing out of the money and whatnot. In addition, Thiago Canuto’s apprentice weight allowance doesn’t hurt her chances, either.

Caio Caramori trains Cotia for Caraway Racing, LLC. Jockey Canuto was also aboard for that maiden victory.

Race five is a 1-1/16 miles allowance optional claiming run on the all-weather track for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the second-favored (at 7/2) Gozilla, piloted by veteran jockey Kazushi Kimura.

This five-year-old gelding finished in the money five of his eight career starts, winning one—his initial maiden attempt in 2019.

Subsequently, he finished third in the Hopeful Stakes (Grade I) at Saratoga and fourth in the Champagne Stakes (Grade I) at Belmont Park.
Since then, he’s moneyed three of the five allowance races, regularly posting speed figures in the high 90s/low 100s. Versus the rest of this 14-horse field, he’ll do.

Thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Famer Mark E. Casse trains Gozilla for owner Gary Barber.

Race seven is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race on the all-weather track for three-year-olds. Either of the horses in the Gary Barber-owned 1/1A coupled entry are worth a win bet.

The first half of the 8/5 coupled entry is La Belleza Negra, ridden by Edgar Morales. This Rey Hernandez-trained colt moneyed four of his five career starts, winning one.

La Belleza Negra He notably finished ninth out of 12 in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes (Black Type) earlier this month.

The second half is Twenty Four Mamba, with Santiago Gonzalez in the irons. This Mark Casse-trained colt finished in the money five of his nine career starts, winning one.

Also, Twenty Four Mamba’s money finishes include seconds in both the Victoria Stakes (Listed) at Woodbine last July and the Leonatus Stakes (Black Type) in January at Turfway Park.

Here is a layoff horse that some bettors might be concerned about backing because, they say, you just never know what level of fitness they possess when this race goes off. Ingrid Mason knows runners, after a career as a jockey herself. She gets her charges ready to go, and this seasoned gelding of 8 years knows how to be a professional. Edwin Gonzalez can get a win or 2 when it counts, and I like how this one competed last year at Hawthorne. I would take 2/1 on this entry … that is the right price against this group.

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 9: Gagoots #1, 15/1):

It was just a matter of time before this gelding resurfaced … If you go back and watch the replay from his last race on 20 Feb. you will find nothing but trouble from the outset. A 4-yr-old by Will Take Charge, Jimmy DiVito had this one headed in the proper direction back in December. John Cox claimed him after that 20 Feb. contest ... now, this should be a very interesting comeback race to see how he handles the class hike. A runner with ability, this level is not out of the realm of possibility. After 3 races in Hot Springs, he has already faced several of these foes that have been drawn in here. I like that Geo Franco gets the call once again.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)



Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 1/16th, Clm20kn3L, 3+):

I know it might seem odd to focus on this particular contest because the race after it is an ALLW Co. fight. That race is 1½, which is not a regular distance over the dirt, unless you are running at Belmont in early June. They do have these distance tests at Oaklawn, just not that often. Lest we forget, “Claiming Game” races like this one we are spotlighting here are hotly-contested, and at many other tracks would be considered like ALLW Co. anyway … When it comes to a top selection in this route, going 1 1/16th on Thursday afternoon, I am pretty interested in taking on the presumptive favorite, Ekati’s Verve #3. I know Chris Hartman has turned supernova these past few weeks, and when he gets together with Francisco Arrieta, they are downright difficult to beat. However, I think their entry just looks too obvious as he ships in from the Fair Grounds. Just because he ran well at this level down there, does not mean it will translate up here. Instead, I am going to turn to Tom Van Berg and his gelding by Graydar, Make Noise #8. This is a pretty classy runner that can handle the turns, the class, and knows this track after 10 career starts. Van Berg has had some competitive attempts of late at Oaklawn, and that should continue. Rookie rider John Hiraldo, who schooled up in Maryland, is a solid rail rider as a bug. When he gets hot … look out! As far as 1 other pick, I quite like the look of Karl Broberg’s newly acquired, Major Attraction #4. He claimed this horse by Distorted Humor off of Robertino Diodoro, and this is a Broberg specialty … run 1st-off at a higher level. If this one can effectively stretch out to 1 1/16th, then he could be a major player. Here is the bet I particularly like … what a fun race!

#2 Danzatale has won two of three races at this class level and on this surface, but must rebound from a poor effort last time out. #4 Khosea was a winner over this track last time out, and and run pretty well over the surface in four straight starts.

Race 7: Claiming

#1 Awesome Pudding was second at this level last time out, and should be the one they all have to run down in the stretch. #4 Creative Cloud was fifth against much tougher horses last time out. He should enjoy this drop down in class.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#6 My Sunny Valentine was a solid winner last time out over the synthetic surface, but has run well over the turf as well, so the surface change should not bother her. #10 Causingahullbaloo will also move back over to the turf after a nice second place effort over the synthetic last time out.

Race 9: Maiden Claiming

#10 Cacheton runs fist off the claim for a solid trainer today after running a close fourth at this level last time out. #3 Philzano was a head away from victory last time out, and has shown up with solid efforts in all three of his career starts.

The fifth heat of the Provincial-Midway Championship Series will be run and won at Newcastle on Thursday, with a quality 12-horse field set to do battle. HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for throughout the meeting, as well as his top selection in the $150,000 feature event. Close to perfect conditions for racing are likely, with the track rated a Soft 5 at the time of writing, while the rail is out 6m for the entire course, which should give horses every chance to wind up on the big straight at Newcastle. Racing will get underway at 1:15pm AEDT, with the running of a Maiden Handicap over 900m.
Provincial-Midway Championships Qualifier Best Bet – Never Talk

Local trainer Kris Lees knows how to win a feature at Newcastle, and while it may be an obvious statement because he trains three of the market fancies in this event, but we think he will walk home a winner. Never Talk has always been a mare we have plenty of time for and this race looks ideal for her, given she has just run a terrific third at Group 3 level. The four-year-old mare by No Nay Never has won five of her 17 starts, while she has a 50% strike rate at Newcaslte. James McDonald will do the riding from barrier one, which should see this classy galloper ridden comfortably throughout the 1400m event, before she is allowed to let rip in the straight and finish the race off with her devastating turn of foot. It has been a little while between drinks, but this looks a good race for her to build some confidence back up.

Newcastles Best Bet Of The Day – Whodat

We were a little bit frustrated to see that Whodat had won dominantly at Newcastle last start after he was slaughtered as our best of the day at Ipswich the start prior, but he showed exactly what we knew he had under the bonnet when recording a 4.5-length victory at this track and distance. The Matt Dunn-trained four-year-old was given a terrific steer on March 4 to break his maiden, so with all things being equal on Thursday, there is no reason why Whodat can’t win again. The son of Nicconi has drawn favourably in gate five, so Rawiller can have him midfield with cover, while he faces another pretty weak Class 1 event. If he replicates what we saw from him a fortnight ago, he should be too good again.

In the second race of the day, Bobby Is King looks beautifully placed to break his maiden. The three-year-old gelding has had three starts to date, finishing runner-up at Goulburn in his most recent start when a drifting favourite. The Robert Quinn-trained son of Bobby’s Kitten finished fourth on debut on the back of a good trial win, before running fifth in a solid 3YO Maiden at Warwick Farm on February 9. Now fourth-up and at 1400m once again, the gelding should be mighty hard to hold out. Jay Ford will do the steering for the first time, but from barrier four, he is not going to have to do any work on the top weight except for sit and steer. The odds-on quote looks spot on.

Best Value At Newcastle – Titled Tycoon

Richard & Michael Freedman saddle up $51 chance in the second leg of the quaddie, with Titled Tycoon looking to win his third race. The four-year-old gelding has had four starts at this track for a third and two wins, including a dominant 4.2-length romp back in July. The son of Written Tycoon went north to Queensland later in July, running a good third behind Victoria Park and Eelloh, before pulling up quickly in a Class 3 over 1815m at Eagle Farm on July 31. In two trials back, he has not been beaten far without threatening, but he does boast a good first-up record, he will race up on the speed and he has a brilliant record at this track, so we can’t quite work out how he is a $51 chance. Keagan Latham had feature race success in the Canberra Guineas on Monday, so he will be riding with a bit of confidence too. You could have worse each-way bets that Titled Tycoon.

It should be a belter of an evening at Pakenham on Thursday, but it is a tough start to the program for punters with four maiden races showcased, so it might be worth following trial form in those early events. On what looks to be a competitive eight-race card, the four-year-old maiden kicks things off at 5:45pm AEDT with Greg Eurell’s O’Lucky and Mick Kent’s Harmsworth the likely favourites. The last race on the card is set to go at 9:15pm.
BEST BET: SAVVY SOVEREIGN

Despite it being 234 days since his last win, we think the Maher & Eustace-trained Savvy Sovereign can win here over the 1400m. He won a jumpout at Camperdown in January and since then has run sixth at Sandown and was beaten a nose two weeks ago at Hamilton over 1200m when starting favourite. He was fourth at the 400m mark last time and made up good ground, so the extra 200m should be of no concern. Greg Eurell’s Huguenot has run three second-placings in a row and is obviously a danger. On his last three occasions Huguenot has been beaten less than a head, which says he is knocking on the door – or does it say he just doesn’t know how to win yet? We will see.

After two jumpouts and a trial, All So Clear should be pretty fit to contest this event for the strong Hayes team. The son of So You Think x Dorabella last started on Melbourne Cup Day, finishing fourth and only 1.8 lengths off the eventual winner, Spirit Of Gaylard. Before that, his seventh at Caulfield wasn’t too bad either, beaten just 1.7 lengths behind the more than capable Rhinoceros. He is unplaced in three attempts on a good surface, which is a slight concern, but considering the small margins and the class of horses he was running against, that’s a forgive. Danny O’Brien’s Blackcomb is the danger.

The Wendy Kelly-trained Vitani has pretty good form on good tracks, and despite only winning in less than 10% of her races, she might show up first-up from a spell. She hasn’t set the world alight in recent jumpouts, but there were some quality horses in those fields. Her runner-up finish on August 22 was pretty solid after being back, so we wouldn’t let this one get out to silly odds. She usually settles midfield, while she has placed in 50% of her races. She is the most experienced runner in this field, and that might give her the edge. Maybe each-way is the go here.
