    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Fair Grounds - Race #5
    Picks Notes
#2 Sumitup Pace has a little other company near the top, but she looks like the controlling pace from this draw near the inside, and she seems likely enough to wire these if she doesn't take a ton of heat early on.
#5 Maw Maw's Sophia She's a fairly reliable type with some tactical ability, and she was competitive with this kind a few starts back. The last pair hasn't been quite as good, but she still seems like a good fit here.
#7 A. K. A. Grams She has been a bit better at Delta than on full size courses, but she has enough pace to track the splits here while trying to hang around for a piece underneath.
Race Summary Sumitup has inside pace in a race where the other main speed comes further outside, so a clean break could put her in the driver's seat right out of the box with these.

    Fair Grounds - Race #6
    Picks Notes
#2 Honorary Guest She flashed a little bit of forward ability when trying the turf for the first time, and that should lead her to another really nice trip with this group while up close throughout. Another step forward might do the trick.
#5 Shishito No doubt she has a claim on this if she's able to get back to anything like her first two tries, but it's never great to see a horse show up in maiden claiming company two weeks after a dreadful try like that last one. Yes, she can win this, but she's a play against on principle for me.
#1 Freeze the Day He's the 'other' Stidham while hailing from the likely chalk's barn, but this team has had some recent struggles, and maybe this one hangs around for a piece in a bad race.
Race Summary Not a deep race here at all, making Shishito potentially tough, but she enters this off a terrible try with better, so I am not too excited to take a short price to see if she can bounce back here. Honorary Guest could trip out and land this as something like the second choice.

    Fair Grounds - Race #8
    Picks Notes
#3 Tempo Madness He showed a little bit of finishing ability in his early 2-year-old season in Kentucky, and perhaps he has matured a bit here into his sophomore year. Finisher comes alive late?
#2 Mahoney Road He has shown some positional pace through two starts, and he's bred to handle the move over to the grass for the first time. Think he might get the right trip, then it's just a question of whether he can find that final gear.
#8 Evan Sing Debuter goes for a very capable team in a race without a ton of hard-hitting form, so he may not have to be a world-beater to land this at first asking.
Race Summary Really looking forward to this race that feels pretty competitive on paper. Tempo Madness showed a touch of late interest in her early career races last year, and she might be worth a look off the bench in hopes she moved forward with that time away.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Dover Downs - Race #1
      Picks Notes
#5 ROGER MACH EM Rallied widest and fastest as the beaten fave.
#8 ALLIE’S FINAL Has enough speed to get position and stick around from outside post.
#4 FIRENGLOW A Made first-over middle moves to lead at stretch call in last pair.
Race Summary Roger Mach Em, far back through a single-file opening half mile as the favorite, advanced inside on the backstretch but had to swing widest on the turn to escape traffic. He followed the move of the winner and finished best while 6-wide. He is today’s Best Bet.

      Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
      Picks Notes
#4 HERVEY HANOVER Better fit, better post in second recent start at this level.
#3 LANCASTER BOMBER Exits fast races, must use on all gimmick tickets.
#1 LOU ED ZEPPELIN Gets class relief, moves outside in, price attached.
Race Summary Hervey Hanover, no factor from post 10 on the class drop last week, made up some ground through a :55.4 back half in the race prior. He finished 4-1/4 lengths behind Going Fast, who came back to beat several runners in this field. Play a 1-3-4 exacta box.

      Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #3
      Picks Notes
#7 TYMAL TIGGS Slowed by start and slow pace in follow-up to promising debut.
#4 GIVE ME KARETS K Took shorter route to finish ahead of top one.
#8 BIG MILES Can use his speed well with hopples on for first start as a 3-year-old.
Race Summary Tymal Tiggs raced off the gate in both of his starts and rallied too wide and too late. He chased a snails-like pace last week and finished well after he angled wide for the stretch run. He’s due for some racing luck and worth a win and place bet.

Gulfstream Park Selections for March 16, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

        By Kyle E in Horse Racing — Mar 16th, 2022 3:17am PDT

Gulfstream Park Selections for March 16, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

There is racing on Wednesday with eight thoroughbred racecourses available for wagering. I should note that Louisiana Downs is listed under thoroughbred, but this is a quarter horse meet. If you want quarter horses then you will know where to find them.

        Industry Leading 9% Cashback!

There should also be some harness racing posted for later in the evening at the BetOnline racebook. We’re playing Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans and Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach on Wednesday. You can bet one or both, whatever picks you feel most comfortable with this afternoon.

The headliner coming up this weekend is the $500,000 Essex Handicap (Gr. 3) at Oaklawn Park. There isn’t any racing on the Road to the Kentucky Derby until the $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby (Gr. 1) at Fair Grounds.

Gulfstream has eight races worth $323,000 on Wednesday afternoon. Head below for our best Gulfstream Park picks on March 16, 2022.

        Post Time: 1:33 p.m. EST
        Distance: 1 Mile
        Purse:$42,000

Race 2 covers a mile for a $42,000 purse on the turf. Ghostinyou and Wicked Fast should compete hard for the top prize here

Ghostinyou is 7th, 1st in two races on December 19 and February 6. On his debut, Ghostinyou finished 7th for a $60,000 purse.

That could have been better, with Ghostinyou getting back on track as a sophomore runner. Ghostinyou defeated Greg’s Honor by 1 length in a $42,000 event.

With Ghostinyou back in a $42,000 race, he should be competitive. Wicked Fast is 3rd, 1st, 2nd in three attempts and consistent so far.

He was a $50,000 winner on November 6. This was an impressive run for a win by a head. Wicked Fast placed 2nd after receiving a disqualification.

Wicked Fast was a winner by a neck, but had that called back for bumping foes. Look for Wicked Fast to continue running well.

        Race 4
        (1) Old Town Road
        +250 (5/2)

        +500 (5/1)
        (3) Faithful Ruler

        +400 (4/1)
        (7) I’ll Figure It Out
        +1200 (12/1)

        Post Time: 2:37 p.m. EST
        Distance: 5 ½ Furlongs
        Purse:$42,000

Race 4 goes for Unsociable and Old Town Road likely putting together big performances. Unsociable is 2nd, 1st in two races in his career.

He placed 2nd behind by 1 ¼ lengths in a $30,000 purse on November 18. This was an acceptable run, with Unsociable coming back on January 5 for a $43,000 purse.

Old Town Road is going to be tough from the inside rail. The No. 1 is 4 for 5 finishing 1st, 1st, 1st, 5th, 1st in five attempts.

The colt is coming off a 2 ¼ length win over King of Truth in a $42,000 assignment. That was an impressive showing after the first loss of his career.

Old Town Road was 5th in the $100,000 Inaugural Stakes on December 4. After dropping back down to a beatable level, he went right back to the winner’s circle.

Expect the same on Wednesday, with Old Town Road tough to beat in a $42,000 race. I like a mini upset over Unsociable.
        The Bet
        (1) OLD TOWN ROAD

        Race 7
        (1) Beechnut Trophy
        +300 (3/1)
        (2) Thataint Tooshabby
        +800 (8/1)
        (3) Lover Her Lots
        +600 (6/1)
        (4) Running Legacy
        +500 (5/1)
        (5) Demogorgon
        +400 (4/1)
        (6) Philly Eagles
        +1000 (10/1)
        (7) American Heroine
        +450 (9/2)
        (8) Jumeirah
        +800 (8/1)

        Post Time: 4:09 p.m. EST
        Distance:7 ½ Furlongs
        Purse:$61,000

Race 7 is a $61,000 event covering 7 ½ furlongs on the turf. This race on the grass should include Running Legacy and Beechnut Trophy at the wire.

Running Legacy made her debut on December 9 and was in good form. The filly beat Novel Idea by 1 ¼ lengths for a $60,000 prize.

That was impressive for a first-time runner and more could be coming for Running Legacy. Beechnut Trophy is going to have a big chance from the inside.

Beechnut Trophy is 2nd, 3rd, 1st, and considered a contender in this one. She has only run well in her career so far.

In her most recent attempt, Beechnut Trophy beat Al Qahira by a half-length for a $60,000 purse. This was after showing 3rd in a $55,000 event.

From the inside, Beechnut Trophy should benefit nicely. Expect her to be a good value selection in Race 7 on Wednesday.

Free Horse Racing Tips Today – Wednesday, March 16, 2022
          Racing Sharks

We have studied the form from all races across the country for Wednesday, March 16, and provided our best horse racing tips.

Certainly some positive signs about the country with the wild weather that has plagued the eastern states starting to show some signs of abating. We head to the Kensington track in Sydney which although still rated at heavy at time of publication, the forecast is a lot milder than what we’ve seen over the past month. Likewise Sandown in Melbourne, whilst remarkably we look like getting back on to a good surface in Brisbane.

We have made five selections in total and are confident that we have found you some winners! So, read on below to find our best horse racing tips for this Wednesday, March 16.
          Randwick, Race 1 – 7. Stylish Pedrille ($7.00/$2.25)

If you were in any doubt as to whether the recent run of weather has proven problematic for horse trainers, then we suggest you have a look at this race.

All sorts of form lines bouncing around here with plenty coming off all-weather track trials or some simply coming off extended spells with no hit out at all under their belt for which you can only assume this is the substitute.

One horse that did have a grass hitout is Stylish Pedrille and although she only went 735m, she looked racey and ready, and as if she was singing out for something a little more genuine than a jump and run trial.

Master horseman Ron Quinton has had some of his biggest successes with this breed, and he teams up with his former apprentice Sam Clipperton here.

This is a wide open affair, but at each way odds and given the stable’s affinity with the family, we think she’s worth a genuine each way bet.
          Randwick, Race 2 – 2. Waterford ($2.60)

It pays to pay attention when Nash Rawiller is hungry for a winner. No luck for the best in the business on his recent trip south which is all the more reason to back him first ride back in town.

He’s been cherry picked for this ride by some of the industries heaviest hitters who are tied up with this horse.

No trial for this import who goes straight to a 1400m maiden first up with Nash locked in and very heavily supported from the time the prices went up.

Going to be skinny enough, but the push suggests he’s shown plenty at home and the plan to not trial him reeks off a kill.

Suggest you would want to be involved.
          Sandown, Race 1 – 3. Lalaguna ($2.50)

Not sure there’s a stable or rider that you’d want to get around more than this pair of late.

Jamie Kah is back to her best, as highlighted by her recent Adelaide Cup win, and Ciaron and David are simply doing Ciaron and David things, again.

Well bred, reasonably well drawn, trialed good and a rider full of confidence aboard in a mediocre maiden.

It does seem a winning combo.
          Eagle Farm, Race 2 – 3. Exceed Tycoon ($8.50/$2.45)

Dual acceptor at both Eagle Farm and Ipswich. Significant change of scenery for this horse which may prove the key to unlocking the potential he has shown glimpses of to date.

Now in the hands of David Joice who has recently returned to the training ranks and if his strike rate from when he previously had a small team in work at the Gold Coast is anything to go by, punters will be well served to have a little nibble at this lightly raced gelding.

Follow him whichever meeting he heads to.
          Randwick, Race 3 – 1. Stalking ($2.90)

Looks like it is her day today.

Very nice filly by Animal Kingdom for the powerful Godolphin team here in a 1550m maiden who gets the services of Nash Rawiller after a strong first up performance.

Came from well back on the turn at Kembla Grange last start and closed gamely suggesting she has come back in excellent order after contesting black type races at her previous campaign.

Not overly deterred by the wide draw as her pattern is to get back anyway, and there is good reason why she is carrying the top weight against her own age in a maiden handicap event after honest efforts in some of the lead up races to the VRC Oaks in the Spring.

Looks one of the better bets of the day.

Best Bet – 1. Stalking (Randwick, Race 3)
Next Best – 2. Waterford (Randwick, Race 2)
Best Roughie – 7. Stylish Pedrille (Randwick, Race 1)

NCAA-B | South Dakota State vs Providence

                Play on: OVER 147½ -105

Thursday CBB Free play. My selection is on the 'over' between South Dakota State and Providence at 12:40 pm et on Thursday.
South Dakota State's gameplan heading into this opening round matchup with Providence is no secret. It will look to run the Friars out of the gym, noting that the it enters this tournament having knocked down 28+ field goals in nine of its last 10 games, regularly eclipsing the 30 mark over that stretch. The problem for the Jackrabbits is they've taken a 'defense optional' approach all season and that's likely to continue here. Note that opponents made good on 38, 29, 30, 25 and 27 field goals against them over their last five games. While Providence suffered through a shooting slump in the Big East Tournament, I'm confident it can and will bounce back here given the matchup. Note that we've seen the Friars thrive in high-scoring environments this season. Remember, they defeated St. John's 86-82 and Xavier 99-92 in February alone. There was also an 89-84 loss to Villanova. We haven't necessarily seen Providence show the consistent ability to control the pace of opposing offenses, allowing each of its last five opponents to get off 57+ field goal attempts with Xavier and Butler attempting 79 and 61 field goals respectively over that stretch. I don't expect either side to shy away from an up-tempo affair here. Take the over.

The Key: Connecticut ranks in the Top 40 in both offense and defense and is capable of making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. I like the price we are getting on the Huskies as only 6.5-point favorites against a New Mexico State team from a weak conference. The Huskies played the 52nd-ranked schedule this year while the Aggies played the 189th. The Huskies are unfortunate to only be 23-9 this season when you consider they had 8 losses by 6 points or fewer. They are even better than their record would indicate and easily could have won the Big East. The Huskies are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 NCAA Tournament games. Take Connecticut.

NHL | Capitals vs Blue Jackets

                        Play on: OVER 6½ -107

Columbus, off a win but playing in back to back games and on the road, will likely start Korpisalo in net today. This will be his second game back after a lengthy absence, and it did not go well in his first start. Considering the performance of the Blue Jackets' defense, this could be another case of "trial by fire". The Blue Jackets have, surprisingly, a bit more offense than the Capitals, however the Caps, while middle of pack, have the edge in defense and goaltending. Washington has stepped it up both in wins and offense lately, winning 5 of 6, and averaging over goals a game. Two points to note; the Capitals' last 4 games were decided by a single goal, and Columbus has kept things close all year long.
The Capitals are heavily favored, so i am looking towards the total today. Totals of seven or more goals have figured prominently in both teams' recent starts, and a penchant for close games and /or overtime makes me lean towards the over.

                            NCAA-B | St. Peter's vs Kentucky

Jack's Free Pick Thursday: Kentucky -17.5
The Kentucky Wildcats have gotten stronger as the season has gone on under John Calipari. Look for them to put their foot on the gas against St. Peter's in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Of course, it will help that the Wildcats will have a big home-court advantage with it only being a 3-hour trip from Lexington to Indianapolis.
Kentucky ranks 4th in adjusted offense and 25th in adjusted defense while facing the 28th-ranked schedule in the country. St. Peter's ranks 260th in adjusted offense and will struggle to score against the Wildcats. The Peacocks also played just the 212th-ranked schedule in the country.
It was a bad look for the Peacocks in the non-conference as they lost to Stony Brook, Siena, St. Francis-NY, St. John's by 21 and Providence by 14. This will easily be their toughest test of the season, and I don't expect it to go well for them against all these athletes the Wildcats have to offer.
Kentucky is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven games following an ATS loss. The Wildcats are 6-2-2 ATS in their last 10 NCAA Tournament games. I fully expect the Wildcats to win this game by 20-plus points en route to making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Bet Kentucky Thursday.

Play on: St. Peter's +18 -110 at William Hill

                              Play - Saint Peter’s (Game 733).
Edges - Peacocks: 7-0 SUATS last seven overall games entering this contest; and fourth NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011 … Wildcats: Head coach John Calipari is 8-12 ATS in first-round games in this tourney, as well as 2-8 ATS as a favorite of 18-plus points in this tourney … We recommend a 1* play on Saint Peter’s. Thank you and good luck as always.

                                NCAA-B | Indiana vs St. Mary's

Play on: Indiana +3 -110 at BetVegas

                                FREE PICK: Indiana Hoosiers +3
                                RATING: 30*
                                ROT#: 747
I'll take my chances with the Hoosiers as a 3-point dog against St. Mary's on Thursday. Don't get me wrong. The Gaels are a really good basketball team. I just don't think they should be favored on a neutral floor against Indiana. Not with how good this Indiana team has been playing down the stretch.
The Hoosiers were a different team in the Big Ten Tournament. They knocked off Michigan and Illinois before losing to Iowa on a banked 3-pointer at the buzzer. They carried it over to a 66-58 win against a very good Wyoming team in Tuesday's Play-In game.
A lot is being made of the difficulties that Indiana will face playing on just 1-day of rest and having to travel way out west. It's not ideal, but at the same time I don't think it's going to impact them as much as some might think.
We have consistently seen these Play-In teams go on to make a run. Two teams have reached the Final Four (UCLA last year and VCU back in the day), while multiple others have got to the Sweet 16. Indiana to me has a feel of a team that can not only win here but advance to next week. Give me the Hoosiers +3!
