Al Cimaglia: Pompano Park Pick 4 Analysis-$15,000 Guaranteed Pool

There are 8-races scheduled on the Monday night card at Pompano Park. The 0.50 Pick 4 starts in Race 5. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool with a very low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 5

5-Max (2-1)-Beat the Open II kind in last and wasn't really threatened. Hasn't sealed the deal at this class but has been consistently in the hunt at the wire. This looks like a field that can be beaten if #6 isn't dialed on high.
6-Flagman (5/2)-The Plano barn is clicking at 29% over the past 30 days and this Guccio 5-year-old has won 2 straight. Has the gate speed to get on the point and should be looking to wire this crew again.

Race 6

2-Susie's Sister (5/2)-Steps-up after wiring the field last week. This will be a test but likes the Pomp hitting the board in 12 of 14 with 6 wins. Miller should be racing near the top of the stack throughout.
5-Blue Devil (4-1)-Raced well in last from the 9-hole following a scratch. Winner of >$110,000 as a 3-year-old is a player and should offer a fair price.
7-Muskingum (12-1)-Had a big try from the 7 post two back and finished 2nd at 17-1. Then lost all chance by breaking at the start on a sloppy track. Will take a swing at this price that Chindano has this mare in striking range turning for the wire.

Race 7

1-Enzio (5-1)-Fits with these and Macdonald returns, and he steered in this 6-year-old's last win. Could get the top and not look back.
2-Star Track Hanover (5/2)-Hennessey steers and he was in in charge for the last win at this class on 1-31. Risky to leave out but recent form has been dull and might be over bet.
5-Sooo Handsome (3-1)-Gets some needed post relief and if the fractions are quick this veteran should be passing foes down the lane. Team Plano keeps rolling so best to respect.

Race 8

2-Steel Reserve (5-1)-Needs a trip and may finally get one with Hennessey in the bike. Using in an open affair.
4-J-S Jasper (5/2)-The Pavia barn has been hot winning 4 of 10 starts over the last 30 days. The qualifier on 3-15 was fine and this will be the 1st start since 12-28. Has won 3 of 4 at the Pomp and will rely on a big try coming off the bench.
9-BJ Lorado (9-1)-The post makes the price as this 8-year-old drops to a soft spot. Has the gate speed to get the top and could surprise if Jones works a good steer.

#4 Quiet Please She should land a great trip while while tracking the pace that is likely to be set by a couple of players who have been fading late in their recent races. Looks like the right one.
#2 Subsidiary She looks like the inside pace in this spot and has been facing better in most of her recent tries, but the running lines are not much to write home about after stopping hard in the lane in the last two races.
#7 Fullupcohensapiker Dropper has a right to land this after finishing a close fifth for twice this price last time out, but I worry she gets a bit overbet without much of a final gear to call on.
Race Summary Quiet Please might be a slightly better price here than Fullupcohensapiker with similar running styles, and they figure to get decent runs of things behind fairly unreliable pace players.

Parx Racing - Race #7
Picks Notes
#2 Aegean Sea She looks like the controlling pace even while cutting back today, and she has a right to run this bunch off their feet if nobody applies any early pressure. Interesting on the engine.
#6 Espernsita She has done nothing wrong while rattling off three wins in a row to open her career, and she has stamped herself a really good fit with this kind of company. She should land a perfect, pressing trip.
#4 Cartouche She's a pretty reliable tactical type, but this looks like a really competitive spot with several win candidates, and I worry she won't offer a truly fair price.
Race Summary Aegean Sea gets the call with what should be a trip on the front end in a race where the rest seem pretty content to track the splits. Maybe she gets loose into the turn and hangs on.

Parx Racing - Race #8
Picks Notes
#2 Wild Delight She probably hits hard in a race without a ton of serious early pace, as she steps up off the nice maiden claiming win last time out and might be able to control this one from the start.
#3 Et's Moon Maiden She rallied nicely to score in the debut try, and she can probably build on that effort here in this second lifetime start. Worry that she's not going to get the right kind of setup today, but there might be a little state-bred talent here.
#4 Ms Canela She turned in a really nice effort last out when cutting back around one turn, but her form tends to be pretty inconsistent, and she may not be ready to back up that effort.
Race Summary Wild Delight steps up to try winners for the first time with what looks like a pretty nice race shape waiting for her without a bunch of other early speed to contend with.

It’s a brand new week and the lead-up to the $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby (Gr. 1) at Fair Grounds Race Course. The Louisana Derby is one of the biggest races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Race 4 is a $20,900 event covering 6 furlongs on the dirt. This one should go pretty well for Grand Royale and Tommyhawk.

Grand Royale is 5 for 18 in his career and 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 1st, 2nd in his previous five events. The gelding had a half-length win over Catalogue for a $10,450 purse on March 31.

Grand Royale came back on April 28 to place 2nd behind Calculating King by 1 ¼ lengths in the same class. He’s up in class, but should have a decent say.

Tommyhawk is 4 for 19 and 3rd, 11th, 3rd, 1st in his previous four events. In his latest race, Tommyhawk beat Half Ours to Keep by 1 ¾ lengths for $44,468.

That was impressive after showing 3rd in the $70,000 Silver Goblin Stakes on November 12. An additional class drop to $20,900 should play out really well for Tommyhawk.

G’s Storm is winless in six attempts, but has been coming on better recently. He placed 2nd behind by Lord Eminence by 2 ¾ lengths for a $25,000 purse.

In his most recent try, G’s Storm showed 3rd for a $16,000 purse on March 4. Down to a $9,000 race, this gelding must be taken seriously.

El Grappler is winless in six races and placed 2nd in two going into today. He placed behind Commissioner David by 8 ¼ lengths and then showed improvement most recently.

El Grappler placed behind Galloping Uno by 1 ¼ lengths for $9,200 on February 26. In a small upset, I like El Grappler from the inside rail to edge ahead.

Race 6 is a $31,000 event covering 6 furlongs on the dirt. Look for Afleet Sniper and My Fortunate Son to be tough runners in this one.

Afleet Sniper is 2 for 23 in his career and can see better results from recent assignments. He is 3rd, 4th in two races going into Monday.

Afleet Sniper showed 3rd on February 24 for an $11,000 purse and then 4th on March 12 for $11,000 in the same class. Despite a jump to $31,000, expect Afleet Sniper to be competitive after a transfer from Sam Houston to Will Rogers.

He had success at Will Rogers a couple of years ago. A distance drop from 7 to 6 furlongs is something to note as well.

My Fortunate Son is 2 for 17 and consistently in the top-3. He’s finished 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st in his previous four attempts.

The gelding is coming off a half-length win for a $13,000 purse on February 16. My Fortunate Son is 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st four races.

This was a nice attempt after placing 2nd behind No Quarter by a half-length in a $13,000 race. Probably the best in this field given recent form.
