1st race – (1) Stolen Money trotted across the wire 81 lengths behind in his lone start. But he drops in class after he was gelded, gets Lasix and switches to Gaffalione. Is worth a look in this field. (4) No Man Left Behind is a firster from the same connections as the top pick and seems like the next best option. (3) Urmizzenthepoint might respond to a switch to Tapeta. (8) Mekano has enough speed to be a threat here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-8.
3rd race – (4) Hardspun Woman tries a claimer for the first time and may appreciate the class drop. (6) Proton Pack is a firster from Ward, who sends out fit runners but his results drop in two-turn races. (3) Kelsey’s Shot returns from a layoff with Lasix and merits respect. With a nod to the great Ivan Reitman film of the mid-80s, this young filly is making her debut at Gulfstream Park on the turf. I do not often pick “1st timers” because they are very unpredictable. However, when both Wesley Ward (trainer), and CJ Thoroughbreds (owner) come together, this daughter of Ghostzapper (appropriate …) makes a ton of sense. Her breeding speaks to the idea that she can handle this surface with ease, and I like that Emisael Jaramillo gets the call. Ward is simply a master when it comes to breaking in, and training up these types. Her work tab looks consistent at Palm Meadows, and I am thinking that her price will be more than square. Egon would be proud …

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Astroturf #8, 6/1):

Here is a Bridlewood homebred that looks to be in great form. The son of Speightstown is making his 6th consecutive start of the GP Meet for Kent Sweezey, a conditioner who continues to look for opportunities to score. I like his potential, and with Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle, this gelding will be facing some foes that he has tackled in the recent past. The bloodlines, his record against state co., and his fitness, all look like ticks to the positive. What it is going to come down to is what always happens on the grass … settling and rating … if Gaffalione can do that effectively, then this 5-yr-old has more than a sporting chance.

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 Mile, OC20kn1x, F&M 4+ Florida Breds):

The Wednesday “Spotlight” race is this tough contest … a 1-turn mile on the MT. Out of these 7 runners that are entered, it is clear that Phil Bauer has the one to beat. Smarmy #2, a filly by Liam’s Map, made her ’22 debut on-track recently at a similar class level. She was a short price that day, and bettors seemed convinced that she could easily put a bow on that 5½F sprint … it was not to be. Ending up 3rd was disappointing, as she was pushed towards the rear. Though she rallied, it was too little, too late. Even with Luis Saez aboard, it feels like she might be an underlay at 7/5 on the M/L. I think she is vulnerable … When it comes to a top selection, I think there is value to be found in Carlos David’s Battle Cry #4. It was 2 races back that this filly by Prospective turned up the heat late in the game against OC20k open company. It was an impressive score for David’s entry, especially considering that she had not competed at that kind of level since last year. Shaun Bridgmohan gets the call once again for Pirate Racing, and even though his numbers are not quite up to scratch, he still has ability. I would imagine that this 4-yr-old’s odds will drift up a bit from 4/1, and that will suit. One other runner that I would not overlook is Saffie Joseph’s Our Fantasy #5. The seasoned mare by Amira’s Prince (IRE) was in that race that Battle Cry #4 won back on 2nd Jan., and even though her next start was a miss, she has the class to easily compete against this group. Using her in any horizontal wager is essential. Here is the bet I have constructed …

Here is a Cal bred that is shipping to Texas from Arkansas. The last time we saw this sprinter take to the track it was at Oaklawn Park earlier this month. The Violence colt did not run poorly, ending up 2nd behind Karl Broberg’s Blame George. That MC event was for $20k, and this one at Sam Houston is for $50k. Don’t forget that running in Hot Springs means that you are up against some of the best in the country. If this 4-yr-old can be in-the-money there, then he can win at SHRP. I think his level of fitness is strong, and maybe he can beat Screenplay #4 at his own game. This is going to be a heck of a race …

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Talk of Texas #6, 6/1):

Here is another MC contest that is sure to bring some value … we have Texas breds going 5½F on the Main Track. With 9 approved, I think I want to try and beat Mindy Willis’ Grami’s Boy #3. This 3-yr-old gelding is dropping down from MSW Co., and it might not be such a cinch. Instead, I landed on a son of Saturday Launch that continues to develop for Brent Davidson. He is having a good Meet, and this entry is lightly-raced. With just 3 career starts (all @SHRP in ’22), I am just waiting for this one to break through. The cutback in distance from his last race of 7F is a positive, and so is the switch to rider Freddy Manrrique. He too is applying his trade well in Houston, and I expect that to continue. This will not be an easy step in class, but I trust in Davidson’s conditioning ability.

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 6: Dirt, 6F, ALLW37kn2L, 3+):

The “feature” on what could be a wet Wednesday in H-Town, is this steady-as-she-goes ALLW Co. contest. It is going to be a “blow and go” kinda race, and those that make the lead have a distinct advantage, especially when the top of the lane arrives. I have witnessed a pretty fair set-up these past few months, and I cannot say that a “Golden Rail” or outside speed have necessarily been biases that we can point to. I am sure that M/L oddsmaker Nick Tammaro has it right with Austin Gustafson’s Cost Average #5 (2/1) and Robertino Diodoro’s Silver Ratio #4 (5/2) going 1-2. They both continue to knock on the winner’s circle door, and I would not be surprised if either one scored. I want to use them in a couple of different horizontal wagers, but not on top. That nod is going to Shawn Davis’ Speight and Malice #7. This 4-yr-old gelding by Speightstown did not care for the stretch out against this kind of company last time at Sam Houston (he had to pull up). It is safe to say that his bloodline enjoys the shorter distances. He is going to get another shot in this spot, and I like the angle. Davis is a solid conditioner, even if his numbers are not equal to the Gustafsons and the Caldwells of this Meet. With the addition of Jose Alvarez, I like the investments that owner George Sharp makes. If this speedster can sit on or close to the lead, he should have a great shot at a score. The price is more than right, hovering around 8/1.

#2 Dominate Themoment runs off of a long layoff today, which is a question mark, but his past races are good enough to win here. Irad Ortiz Jr. gets the mount, which is a good sign. #10 Super Design moves back to the turf today, which seems to be his best surface.

Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#2 Smarmy runs second off of the layoff today, which should lead to an improved effort. Her past races should win this one, while she could be the lone speed. #4 Battle Cry won two back at this distance, and was second last time out at a similar race.

Race 8: Maiden Claiming

#5 Cocoa Icing was close at this level last time out, finishing second by a head. She should be tough again today. #6 Chica Boom was fourth in the same race as our top choice, which ended in a blanket finish.

Fair Grounds: Race 1: $5,000 Claiming (six furlongs, 2:05 p.m. ET)

#5 Sweet Bay (7-5) has come to hand quite nicely at Fair Grounds this year. Under the care of hot trainer Ron Faucheux (a 25% winner this meet), Sweet Bay has broken her maiden for a $12,500 claiming tag, finished fifth in a $15,000 claimer, and romped by 2 3/4 lengths in a $5,000 claimer.

All of these efforts came sprinting six furlongs, and Sweet Bay showed tactical speed in both of her victories while posting sharp Brisnet Speed ratings of 72 and 77. There isn’t a ton of pace in Wednesday’s field, so a typical performance from Sweet Bay should be sufficient to secure a clean trip and beat #2 Rivetrix (8-1) and #3 Spy a Star (7-2) to the winner’s circle.

Gulfstream Park: Race 5: Maiden Special Weight (one mile, 3:09 p.m. ET)

#3 Missy Greer (7-2) ran well over this track, distance, and class level on Feb. 13, carving out the pace before weakening down the homestretch to finish third by 2 3/4 lengths. Even in defeat, she earned a solid 84 Brisnet Speed rating, tied for the highest figure in Wednesday’s field.

That effort marked Missy Greer’s first start since October, so she’s eligible to improve in her second start off the layoff. Trainer Danny Gargan has been hot at Gulfstream this meet, winning at a 29% rate, and Gargan’s lofty 31% win rate with horses racing on Lasix for the second time applies to Missy Greer. Throw in the presence of jockey Luis Saez (a 30% winner teaming up with Gargan over the last two months), and Missy Greer is an obvious win threat.

First-time starter #6 I’m Baffled (3-1) can battle with #8 Friendship Road (6-1) for the minor awards.

Fair Grounds: Race 7: $50,000 Maiden Claiming (one mile on turf, 4:59 p.m. ET)

It’s unclear whether rain will force this two-turn turf heat to be contested on dirt. But regardless, #6 Lord Zed (5-2) should be formidable while dropping in class.

Conditioned by high-percentage trainer Brad Cox (a 28% winner at Fair Grounds this meet), Lord Zed has placed twice against maiden special weight company at Fair Grounds. After running second in his debut sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs, the son of Lord Nelson finished third in a slow-paced one-mile heat, beaten only 1 1/2 lengths with a sharp 82 Brisnet Speed rating.

Lord Zed is clearly the runner to beat on grass, but since Lord Nelson won three Grade 1 races on dirt, tackling the main track shouldn’t be an issue for Lord Zed either. Plus, Cox wins at a 36% rate with horses running long for the second time, which matches his win rate when teaming up with jockey Colby Hernandez over the last two months.

Taking advantage of the Midweek Bet Back offer, we’ll place a $10 win bet on Lord Zed. Then we’ll bet him on top of an exacta using #2 Brother Harold (20-1) and #5 Cryptic Code (5-1) for second place.

Carryover Watch
Gulfstream Park: Race 1: $6,463 Super High 5 carryover (1:05 p.m. ET)

Let’s say you have your eyes focused on winning a share of the $6,463 Super High 5 carryover up for grabs on Wednesday at Gulfstream Park. If you’re going to pursue this goal, you had better come prepared, because a serious handicapping challenge is on tap.

Winning the prize pool for the $1 non-jackpot wager involves selecting the top five finishers in Race 1, a $16,000 maiden claimer for three-year-olds racing one mile and 70 yards on Tapeta. You might be telling yourself, “There are only nine entries—that’s just 15,120 possible outcomes, a very manageable number!” But the form lines of the nine runners are quite muddled, and choosing which horses to build tickets around is easier said than done.

Take morning-line favorite #5 Poetic Code (3-1) as an example. The son of Honor Code has placed a couple of times over this track and class level, but his 0-for-9 lifetime record and 0-for-7 record over the Gulfstream Tapeta both indicate he’s more likely to secure a minor award than battle for victory.

Much the same can be said of second choice #8 Mekano (7-2), who has hit the board in three of his four starts over this track and class level. Certainly Mekano has a strong chance to finish in the top five, but he’s 0-for-7 lifetime and 0-for-5 over the Gulfstream Tapeta, so he’s not necessarily one to count on for a winning performance.

That’s why we’re going to think outside the box with #1 Stolen Money (5-1). True, the Saffie Joseph trainee failed to fire at all in his Dec. 5 debut against $25,000 maiden claiming company over this track and distance, racing in last place throughout while coming home more than 80 lengths behind the winner.

But Stolen Money has been freshened since then and is adding blinkers and Lasix for his first start as a gelding. It’s worth noting Joseph wins at a 24% rate with second-time starters, and he’s gone 17-for-68 (25%) saddling experienced runners in Tapeta routes at Gulfstream. Throw in jockey Tyler Gaffalione (a 20% winner teaming up with Joseph over the last two months), and Stolen Money is eligible to fire a much stronger shot in his second run under colors.

Hong Kong Preview: Packing Award well-placed

#9 Packing Award looks well capable of handling the step up to Class 3 company in the Sam Chuk Handicap at Happy Valley March 23.

The Australian-bred has raced seven times in Hong Kong, racing mostly up to six furlongs, but he handled the step up to 1,650 meters (about one mile and 55 yards) with aplomb when winning a Class 4 contest at Happy Valley Feb. 23.

In that victory he carried 132 pounds and sat three wide without cover, which is normally very tough to do at Happy Valley, but he fought very strongly to take the honors.

His barrier draw of eight could be troublesome, but if the in-form Karis Teetan is able to find any sort of cover, Packing Award looks to have enough ability to handle Class 3 company.

#2 Zone D and #11 Viva Hunter fought out a very close finish last time they raced, with the former just coming out on top. Both should be prominent again, with Viva Hunter perhaps a chance to turn the tables as he is three pounds better off at the weights.

In an open field, #7 Villa Fionn should also run well. His last four starts have produced two wins, a second, and a third, and from barrier three he should get every chance.

The interesting runner is #5 Copartner Fionn. A three-time winner in New Zealand when known as Black Forest, he finished fast for third on his Hong Kong debut at Sha Tin over 1,200 meters (about six furlongs). He has won over 1,600 meters in New Zealand and should appreciate the step up in trip, but the tight Happy Valley track could work against him.
