Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis-$30,000 Guaranteed Pool

          April 1, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Cal Expo begins the weekend with an 8-race card. The feature goes in Race 4 when California bred 3-year-old fillies battle for a share of a $15,000 purse. The 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $30,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

          Race 6

2-Albergo Hanover (2-1)-Left from the 6-hole and was used hard which led to fading down the lane when dropped to this level. Beaten chalk could make amends here and record the 1st CalX win (0-6).
4-Alilthundadownunda (8/5)-Morning line chalk looks the part. Has been close at this level and may finally seal the deal, previous winners aren't in this field.

          Race 7

1-Witch Hunter (2-1)-Raced the back half in 57.2 to just miss. Stewart is back again and starting from the rail shouldn't hurt chances.
3-Treacherous Sky (3-1)-Captain Treacherous filly was bet down to 3/2 in last and was driven aggressively. Disappointed backers but the trip should be better this time and probably the price.

          Race 8

2-Fox Valley Triton (3-1)-Added distance race makes it different and also more difficult to handicap. My play is to uses horses who will be forwardly placed rather than aim for dead closers. This 6-year-old fits that thinking and Roland should have in play early on.
3-Frisky Pedro (5-1)-Not sure how the added distance will suit this Plano trainee but will respect connections. Looking for an advantageous trip and a square price.

          Race 9

1-Villa For Rent (4-1)-Plested trainee is usually right there at the wire. Svendsen should be leaving, looking to race at the top of the stack and and then use one move down the lane to roll by.
4-Terror Of The Night (4-1)-Loses Svendsen to (1) and Stewart steers this trip dependent veteran. Drops to a competive level and draws well. Should offer a fair price and be in the mix with a sharp steer.
6-Paddy Murphy (2-1)-Comes off a win and the last 2 starts have been nice efforts. Best to respect and can stay good for a while.

          0.20 Pick 4

          2,4/1,3/2,3/1,4,6
          Total Bet=$12

            Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Workout Commentary - 4-1-22

            April 1, 2022

“What You Need to Know” - Santa Anita
By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TOC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
            *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100-point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

            Single: 1-Precedent

Forecast: Let’s take a shot with the second-time starter Precedent in this extended turf sprint for older maiden $50,000 claimers. In his debut, the son of Into Mischief broke slowly and was allowed to lag, took hold while strictly on his own entering the lane and rallied to finish respectable seventh, beaten less than four lengths, before galloping out in front. He gets an extra half-furlong to work with today, breezed five furlongs in :58 4/5 at San Luis Rey Downs since raced, retains J. Bravo, and is guaranteed a ground-saving trip from his rail post position. With plenty of room to improve, the P. Capestro owned and training sophomore seems likely to produce a significant forward move, so at 6-1 on the morning line he offers good gambling value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

            RACE 2: Post: 1:33 PT Grade: B+
            Single: 1-Fury Kap

Forecast: Fury Kap (TOC=3/5; ML=3-1) finished a distant third in a much tougher open $32,000 claiming sprint last month but even in defeat earned a pretty good speed figure, one that if repeated today should be more than good enough to handle this restricted (nw-2) $20,000 field. Assuming he breaks cleanly from the rail, the J. Sadler-trained gelding projects to have a strong pace presence, and in a race lacking in effective closers he seems like a fairly solid top pick. A winner over this track and distance two runs back, the son of Fury Kapcori switches to the barn’s “go-to” rider J. Hernandez and shows a bullet workout at Los Alamitos (4f, :47 flat, fastest of 17) since raced, so at 3-1 on the morning line let’s make him a win play and rolling exotic single.

Use (in order of preference): 1-Ian Glass; 7-Southern Horse

Forecast: Stablemates Ian Glass (TOC=7/2; ML=3-1) and Southern Horse (TOC=5/2; ML=7/2) are the ones to beat in this six furlong turf sprint for older $32,000 claimers. ‘Glass moves up a level after a clever score vs. $25,000 foes over this course and distance in mid-February and is a four-time winner (from seven starts) over the Santa Anita lawn. The J. Sadler-trained gelding employs an effective pace-stalking style and projects to enjoy an ideal ground-saving trip from his rail post position. Southern Horse may be the most dangerous of the closing types. A strong runner-up over the flat course in a $40,000 seller two races back, the Argentine-bred veteran failed to land a blow when overmatched vs. allowance rivals in a downhill affair last time out but should be capable of bouncing back at this level, especially in a field with plenty of speed types signed on. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with a very slight edge on top to Ian Glass.

Use (in order of preference: 1-Justhappenlikethat; 4-Mo Connelly

Forecast: Bay Area invader Justhappenlikethat stretches out for the first time, lands the rail, and should have every chance to continue her improving pattern in this bottom-rung maiden $20,000 claimer over a mile for older fillies and mares. It’s possible she’s just a late-running sprinter but her pedigree suggests she should be able to get the trip, her numbers continue to rise with each start, and with the switch to good bug boy D. Herrera she’ll enjoy a considerable weight break, so let’s make the daughter of Stanford our top pick at 2-1 on the morning line. The actual morning line favorite at 9/5 is Mo Connelly and is a “must use” as well, even though, as a beaten favorite in her last pair, she may not be one to trust. In the frame in four of five career starts and more than four lengths clear of the rest when second in a similar event over this track and distance, the daughter of Mineshaft could find herself as the controlling speed, although sprinter-stretching-out Admiral Aeschbach may have something to say about that.

            RACE 5: Post: 3:15 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 4-Ben’s a Goalie; 2-Maxim Moment

Forecast: Ben’s a Goalie snatched defeat from the jaws of victory when leading the way into the lane by four lengths before losing his concentration, drifting out, and getting tagged close home in a main track maiden $50,000 sprint a year ago January. Claimed by trainer J. Sadler, he finally makes it back to the races at the same level (a good sign), and gets Lasix, blinkers, and the barn’s “go-to” rider J. Hernandez, so if he takes to the grass (as most Grazen’s do) he may be able to control this race from gate to wire. A bullet five furlong workout (1:01 1/5, fastest of 14) leads one to believe he’s fit off the bench. Maxim Moment managed to hit the board just once in six starts in the Midwest prior to joining the P. D’Amato barn, but in his first start since last June the son of Hard Spun could easily be much improved. Based strictly on speed figures he’s the one to beat and the works look solid, hence his morning line favorite’s role at 9/5. We’ll give Ben’s a Goalie the edge on top but include both in rolling exotic play.

            Notable Workouts:

Maxim Moment (March 7, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.3hg). Grade: B
In blinkers, breezing every step of the way while much best over Lady Maryann (5f, 1:02.2hg) for P. D’Amato, splits of :24.3, :36.1, :48.1 and 1:01.3, looking decent off a long layoff. Has a right to be a better type now that last year for new connections. Seems better than a typical older maiden claimer.

            RACE 6: Post: 3:45 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 4-Back On the Street; 5-Shout It Out

Forecast: We’ll double the sixth race using the two J. Wong entrants in this restricted (nw-2) $12,500 claiming sprint for fillies and mares. Back On the Street (TOC=9/5; ML=5/2) seems properly-spotted, assuming the big class drop is nothing more than an attempt to locate her proper level. The daughter of Malibu Moon lacks tactical speed but at this extended sprint distance she should be able to settle early and finish up late in a race in which the speed types look suspect. The recent workouts tell us she’s doing well and capable of producing the last run. Stable mate Shout It Out (TOC=4-1; ML=3-1) may not be one to trust – she has one victory and 10 seconds and thirds – but her recent speed figures over the all-weather surface at Golden Gate Fields match up favorably with this group and she did run well when third over the conventional dirt track at Pleasanton last summer. She gets a break in the weights with the switch to bug boy D. Herrera and should have every chance from a comfortable pace-stalking position.

            RACE 7: Post: 4:15 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 2-Self Isolation; 2-Vivacious Vanessa

Forecast: Self Isolation (TOC=5-1; ML=5/2) crushed a maiden field with a huge speed figure in late February but did so as an uncontested front-runner, so the race (and number) may have flattered her. However, based on the projected pace flow of this state-bred first-level allowance turf miler, the daughter of Square Eddie should have every chance to secure a similar trip, and if she does, the D. O’Neill-trained filly may be capable of a repeat victory. A healthy recent work tab at San Luis Rey Downs indicates she’s maintained her edge. Vivacious Vanessa (TOC=9/5; ML=7/2) prefers patient tactics and may need some help up front to have her best chance, but if the early fractions are legit she can be expected to make some serious noise in the final furlong. Her numbers have risen in each of her four career starts and with another forward move today the G. Mandella-trained daughter of Not This Time will be right there.

            Notable Workouts:

Vivacious Vanessa (March 18, Santa Anita, 6f, 1:13h). Grade: B
Inside Q B One (6f, 1:13.3h) and was slightly best to the wire before continuing out to the seven furlong pole, easy early, mild coaxing late, splits of :23.2, :47.4 and 1:00.3 for the final five-eighths on our watches. Solid drill, has state-bred allowance conditions and can handle any surface.

            RACE 8: Post: 4:45 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 3-Pray for My Owner; 1-All Dialed In; 5-Rose Maddox

Forecast: Pray for My Owner (TOC=6-1; ML=2-1) holds a distinct edge in the speed figure department in this state-bred first-level allowance dirt sprint but she’s been away since last June, so her current condition is a question. It would seem that the daughter of Temple City has been given a sufficient foundation by trainer M. Glatt (powerful stats with layoff runners) so we’ll put her on top even there are others in the field that should press her early. In case there’s a pace meltdown (and there could be), we’ll also include a couple of closing types on our ticket. All Dialed In (3-1; ML=5/2) has numbers that are steadily rising, so she should make her presence felt late, while Rose Maddox (TOC=6-1; ML=5-1) has been in the frame in all three of her one-turn races and is another that would appreciate faster-than-par early fractions. Tread lightly here.

            Notable Workouts:

Pray for My Owner (March 27, Santa Anita, 4f, :49hg). Grade: B
Solo gate drill by come-backing filly in M. Glatt barn, never asked at any stage, splits of :36.3 and :49 flat, looking good despite slow final time. Coming back quite well, been away since last June but should fire a big shot fresh.

            RACE 9: Post: 5:15 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 9-Aventapp; 1-Miss Mensa

Forecast: The finale is a grass grab bag sprint for maiden $50,000 older fillies and mares. Anything goes. Aventapp was six lengths clear of the others when a runner-up in a slightly stronger event over this course and distance last month and not much more will be needed to earn her diploma. We’re not crazy about the outside draw – especially with the rail out 30 feet – but if the M. Glatt-trained filly can drop over and get some cover, she could be along in time. Miss Mensa has trained okay for her debut – she doesn’t show any fancy times on her work tab but hasn’t been asked much – and with Lemon Drop Kitten on the bottom side of her pedigree she should have no trouble with the surface. The M. Glatt barn hits at 20 percent with a significant ROI, so she could easily turn up a live item at 8-1 on the morning line. These are the two we’ll be using in our rolling exotics but if you feel the need to spread deeper, go right ahead.

            Notable Workouts:

Miss Mensa (March 14, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.3hg). Grade: B-
Even but a tad the best in team gate drill with Don’t Talk (same time) for M. Glatt, splits of :24.4, :36.4, :49.1 and 1:02.3, never really asked much, not too bad for a maiden claiming type. Might be worth a look in a soft spot.

Frank Carulli: Stronach 5 Analysis | Friday, April 1, 2022

              STRONACH 5 ANALYSIS
              April 1, 2022

If your handicapping can go the distance, you can unlock this week’s Stronach 5. The $1 wager spans five tracks nationwide, but three of the races in the 62-minute sequence are maiden claiming routes at Laurel Park, Santa Anita and Golden Gate, respectively. Here’s a look at this week’s action, with an update to follow Friday after scratches:
LEG A: (Laurel Park, race 9, 4:56 EST) -- UNCLE JEROME found the proper level in his first start this year, stalked the pace 3-wide, then ‘fought to mid-stretch’ and ran third. ORO GRIS met next-out winners in his first two starts, earned his top speed figure for a higher tag last out and is worth using as a longshot.
LEG B: (Santa Anita, race 3, 5:07 EST) -- With four, six-figure turf earners in a field that is a combined 94/19-14-18 on the grass, go deep in Leg B of the Stronach 5.
LEG C: (Gulfstream Park, race 9, 5:16 EST) -- Good recent and long-distance form abounds in this starter allowance. YAMATO rallied for back-to-back wins on Gulfstream’s synthetic track and CONGLOMERATE arrives with three wins in a row, the latest with a 5-wide surge at 8-1 odds. STRIKE TO THE TOP got first run on both rivals to loom boldly at the stretch call but weakened late in both races.
LEG D: (Santa Anita, race 4, 5:43 EST) -- MO CONNELLY gave way after a backstretch-long duel with the winner in her first route try, but she held second and now makes her third start as a 3-year-old. HARDDIANE exited a double key race two back, finished an even third in a faster-paced mile, now returns at the same level off a pair of solid workouts.
LEG E: (Golden Gate, race 3, 5:58 EST) -- TAM TRICKY stretches out to a new distance for all nine entrants, finished in the money behind proven rivals Dress Rehearsal (4-10, $211k) and Bonito Leon (next-out $25k/2L runner-up) and looms a forward factor from the rail at a good price in her first start on turf. ZAFFERANA has run mostly in Maiden Special Weight company, finished fourth behind next-out repeater Bellamore (5/2-2-0, $69k) and her dam, Old Topper, was an accomplished graded stakes route runner, albeit on the main track.
              Suggested $1 Ticket
              Leg A: 1, 10
              Leg B: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7
              Leg C: 1, 3, 6
              Leg D: 2, 4
              Leg E: 1, 8
              COST: $120

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (April 1)

April’s racing gets underway with an 8-race card at Busan on Friday running from 12:00 to 18:00. All betting locations will be open, however, attendance must be pre-booked using the MyCard app. Here are the previews:

                  Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Three-year-old maidens to kick things off and there are a few who look ready to win. (3) TWO OF US won a trial in good style, leading her to be sent off as favourite on debut at this distance on February 25th. She sat handy throughout, ultimately finishing in 2nd place and with some natural improvement, as well as a good gate, can go one better this time. (2) SAEROUN HAMAN has been consistent across three starts so far with his best being 3rd place in a time a full second faster than any of the others have achieved at this distance. He tends to get back in his races but finishes off well and can go close here. The other logical on at the top of tickets will be (6) DONGBU WORLD. He was well back on debut before running on for 4th but was handy to the lead on his second outing on March 6th at 1300M when he ended up in 2nd and a similar run will put him firmly in this. There are two first-time starters and of them (12) GOLDEN POINT looked well in his trial and can put in a bold showing first up. (5) DOCTOR PENTAGON another in the frame.
Selections (3) Two Of Us (2) Saeroun Haman (6) Dongbu World (12) Golden Point
                  Next Best 5, 7
                  Fast Start 3, 6, 7, 9

                  Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Maiden fillies and mares here. (9) DOCTOR CANDY has shown an uptick in form in her latest two, most recently just two weeks ago when 3rd over 1300M with a front-running performances. She backs up quickly, looks nicely in here, and this could be her day. (6) FANTASTIC MAGIC returned from four months out to run 2nd over 1200M on March 4th when handy early and briefly leading. She won’t need to go much better here to have winning chances. (4) MAHAMERU didn’t exactly catch the eye in two outings last autumn when 6th on both occasions at 1000M. The latest of those was on November 6th, but she looked a completely different prospect when on pace and 2nd in a fast time in a trial two weeks and improvement will be expected here. (10) ARTIE’S GAL has been well backed on all her seven outings to date with a best finish being two 3rd places. Despite the wide draw she should be on pace here and can go close. Under a very light weight, (7) SEUNGNIUI BULGIL may sneak some minor money.
                  Selections (9) Doctor Candy (6) Fantastic Magic (4) Mahameru (10) Artie’s Gal
                  Next Best 7, 8
                  Fast Start 4, 6, 8, 10

                  (3) JJANG I first trialed up all the way back in August 2020 and finally makes it to the races. It’s hard to have a huge among of confidence in him as his most recent trial was back in January but it was a good performance, as he led and ultimately was a close 2nd in a fast time. He draws well to be on pace, and he won’t find a better race to debut in. (8) EUNSEONG YEONGUNG hasn’t shown much in the way of speed across four starts so far, but he has run consistently, finishing no worse than 5th and with a best of 2nd, two starts back at 1200M when she went right back and ran on. At her latest she was ridden on pace, coming home 3rd, and she should be a big player here. For the first time (1) MILK DAY draws a decent gate for the first time, having received no better than in gate nine in six previous outings. That may have contributed to him getting a long way back, but he overcame that for a good 3rd at his last start and should be in the hunt today. (2) SORI TAEPUNG and (11) GALLOP BOY are others in the placing frame.
Selections (3) Jjang I (8) Eunseong Yeongung (1) Milk Day (2) Sori Taepung
                  Next Best 11, 12
                  Fast Start 2, 7, 8, 12

                  Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

A small field here and it’s hard to look very far past (7) HAMYANGEUN SANSAM. He was flawless on debut just two weeks ago when leading all the way for an eleven-length win and while he is up in class today, he comes down in the weights and should have too much. (8) JATNAMUGIL was a winner three starts back at class 6 level and since then has run 5th and 2nd in two outings at this class. He overcame gate twelve last time out and can be handy and then running on strong here. (4) UNJU BULPAE comes up in class having secured his maiden win at start number six on March 6th. It had been coming with two placings leading up to it, including a 3rd behind Jatnamugil, and he should be able to measure up in this company. (2) JUMAL BOBAE is another who has beaten Unju Bulpae, which he did when getting his sole win to date in January. He comes in after an in no way disgraced 5th place in the Gyeongnam Shinmun Trophy over 1400M, and this is a softer assignment. Another up in class, (3) GREEN CHEETAH, can also enter the calculations.
Selections (7) Hamyangeun Sansam (8) Jatnamugil (4) Unju Bulpae (2) Jumal Bobae
                  Next Best 3, 6
                  Fast Start 3, 4, 7, 8

                  Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

                  (2) FLYING THE CHAMP broke through in emphatic fashion at start number three on March 6th when he settled midfield but having struck the front midway through the race, ran on to win by nine-lengths over the 1300M. He comes up in class and slightly in trip but draws very nicely and is very much the one to beat again. (9) POWER GUY was a winner on debut at 1200M on March 4th when settling back and then running on very pleasingly. He comes up in class and in trip but neither should be an issue and he can be a danger to the favourite. So too can (4) HAMAN BONGHWASAN. She will need to be forgiven her first attempt at class and distance on March 4th when she weakened, but she had shown ability in her previous two and can bounce back here. (3) GREEN PAPAGO too only ran fairly on her first try at this class. She too had gone well previously and can be given another chance here. (8) QUEEN STAR another who could place.
Selections (2) Flying The Champ (9) Power Guy (4) Haman Bonghwasan (3) Green Papago
                  Next Best 8, 1
                  Fast Start 1, 6, 7, 8

Competitive race. (6) HWARANG BEST comes back in trip following a 5th place over 1400M at his latest start on February 11th. He has won at this distance and has posted good times as well and from a good gate, can win this. (10) H DAY is probably going to be the favourite. She comes up rapidly in class having won two of four starts so far, including at this distance last time out. He has won when racing handy and when settling back, and under a light weight she will be a major player here. (9) BEAUTIFUL KING comes up in class after an all the way win over this distance on March 4th. Today’s conditions means that despite the class rise, he also goes up in the weights, but he can still be competitive in this company. (5) DONGNAM BULPAE is another up in class following a last start win at 1400M. From a good draw, he should be on pace here and be in this a long way. (11) BANJIUI MAGIC another in the minor money hunt.
Selections (6) Hwarang Best (10) H Day (9) Beautiful King (5) Dongnam Bulpae
                  Next Best 11, 3
                  Fast Start 4, 5, 7, 8

                  Busan Race 7: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

Small but competitive field. (1) JESSIEUI KKUM comes up in class following back-to-back wins over this distance at class 4 level. He draws well here, comes down slightly in the weights and can settle back and run on to complete a hat-trick of wins. (7) GEUMA PSYCHIC has been doing his recent work over 1200M, posting some consistently good times. He has six top-two finishes from eleven starts and has run well at this distance too. Tactically versatile, he will probably go forward to the speed here and can be considered. (6) QUATTRO MAX is a bit of a non-winner with just one of his eleven top-three finishes being on top. He is of course a model of consistency and comes back in trip after recent efforts over a mile and 1800M. He has solid placing claims again in this company. (2) BABEL HIT has the fastest time of any of these over the distance and while he can mix his form, he has placing claims here, along with (8) JANGSAN BOBBY.
Selections (1) Jessieui Kkum (7) Geuma Psychic (6) Quattro Max (2) Babel Hit
                  Next Best 8, 4
                  Fast Start 1, 2, 7, 8

                  Busan Race 8: Class 2 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

                  (9) FANTASTIC MAN broke the track record at 2000M (albeit on a very fast running surface) last November, which punched his ticket to the President’s Cup in Seoul later in the month. His 5th from gate fifteen that day wasn’t bad and while he hasn’t really impressed in three starts since, there is evident ability there and this looks set to suit. (5) B.K JOHN was a class and distance winner last November and has been consistent in three starts since with two 4ths and a 3rd. He can sit midfield here and run on and has every chance of going close. (7) MAN OF TOP was a swift winner over a mile at class 3 level two starts back before running well for 5th over 2000M on his first try at this class on March 6th when handy to the lead throughout. He is nicely weighted again and can be a danger. (6) JANGSAN DOKKI and (3) DIAMOND MARINE are others in the placing frame.
Selections (9) Fantastic Man (5) B.K John (7) Man Of Top (6) Jangsan Dokki
                  Next Best 3, 8
                  Fast Start 2, 3, 5, 6

                    Friday, April 1, 2022

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman

                    Hot List Key:

A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
                    * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race – (8) Sonic Kitten was second after a class drop and should be primed for a winning effort. (1) Poetic Code was no worse than third in his last four starts and looms the main rival. (4) Stolen Money was an improved third last time and will be a top contender here. (3) Koosman may hang on at this reduced level. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-8.

4th race – (4) Malraux (C) dropped from 8-5 to 6-5 and posted a second straight win. Looks best in this field. (1) Star Weaver looms the main rival off the D’ Angelo claim. (5) Red Mule might wake up at this level. (8) Earth won his last and should not be ignored. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-8.

6th race – (5) Serenade a Kitten returns to a claimer and should prove best here. (2) Passion Plus seems capable of perking up on turf. (4) Madeira Wine has a nice turn of speed and could be tough to catch. (6) Alpha Babe is worth a look off the Delgado claim. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-6.

8th race – (4) The Virginian dueled for the lead before weakening late and winding up third. Should be tougher to catch here. (3) Shekky Shebaz was second ahead of the top pick last time and should be the main rival. (6) Jack and Noah has plenty of speed and will be formidable if there’s no rust from the layoff. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-6. Doubles: 3-4-6 with 1-3-4-7.

9th race – (1) Yamato has been first or second in four of his last five starts and that consistency should lead to a victory here. (3) Conglomerate won his last three starts and looks like the one to fear. (7) Outshine can be a bright spot in this field. (4) Kitten’s Spa gets Irad for this trip and should be a major factor. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-7.

                    No.

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | April 2, 2022

                      April 1, 2022

Race 12 at Turfway Park | Saturday April 2 | Post Time 6:23 PM Eastern

Jeff Ruby Steaks – Grade 3 | Purse $600,000 | One Mile and One Eighth | Three Year Olds

Four weeks ago in the precursor to this race, the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, Tiz the Bomb (7) prevailed by a neck over Stolen Base (3). Although 10 new shooters emerge for this race, the result may be no different because both colts are making their third starts off layoffs since last year and continue to improve. That’s not to say there’s no profit opportunity in the field as there will be quite a few horses going off at odds of 10/1 or more which can have a say in the outcome and make for profitable exotic wagers.

Stolen Base (2) will get slight preference over Tiz the Bomb (7) this time around, he adds blinkers. Whereas Tiz the Bomb made a nice move on the turn to go from fourth to a neck in front with an eighth of a mile to run, Stolen Base was making up ground with every stride in the final yards. The extra eighth of a mile as well as new blinkers to perhaps help him to race closer in the early stages are two reasons I think he can turn the tables on Tiz the Bomb. Tiz the Bomb had a stellar two year old campaign culminating with a 12th to second rally in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. He tried dirt for his three year old debut and only proved he hated it when seventh, but on the all-weather surface for the first time last month Tiz the Bomb returned to his top turf form from last year. With two strong workouts since raced he should run well and we will absolutely use him on exacta and trifecta tickets played but he will be a poor win bet anywhere near his 2 to 1 starting odds.

Next we have two horses with potential in Tawny Port (5) and Blackadder (12). Tawny Port showed a LOT of promise first time out winning at a mile at Turfway Park, a very tough question to ask a first time starter. He rallied from 11th of 12 to do that and showed it to be no fluke when coming back five weeks later to win again. Like Tiz the Bomb, he tried dirt last out (in the Risen Star Stakes) and it only proved he doesn’t like the surface. He’s worked very well since then and with continued improvement since his January 7 local win he could post the mild upset, opening at 6 to 1. Blackadder opens at 15/1 which is odd considering he is the ONLY horse in the field to have won on all-weather at this nine furlong trip. He rallied from seventh to win the El Camino Real Derby in February, his second win in a row around two turns, and he continues to improve. He is one of the recently transferred horses from the Baffert barn so he can earn Road to the Derby points here when previously he could not.

For the trifecta, I’ll toss in Rich Strike (4), Red Run (8) and Constitutionlawyer (11), the latter opening at 50 to 1. Rich Strike rallied from 11th to fourth in the Battaglia and was just a half-length from third, so has a shot to pass a lot of horses in the late stages. Red Rum won the Texas Turf Mile Stakes at the end of January and is bred to run on this surface BUT Asmussen has a low 1 for 44 record over the last five years in all-weather routes. Constitutionlawyer broke his maiden at this nine furlong trip on dirt rather easily one before last in New York then ran 11th in the Withers. His dam produced an all-weather winner and his sire (Constitution) has had a LOT of nine furlong stakes winners as three year olds the past few years, such as Tiz the Law, so he cannot be totally counted out. I will probably make a token $2 across the board on him so as not to be kicking myself late if something happens and he wins and pays $100.

                      Win bets:

Stolen Base (2) should be bet to win at odds of 5 to 2 or higher.

Tawny Port (5) should be bet to win at odds of 7 to 2 or higher.

Blackadder (12) can be considered for a win bet at odds of 5 to 1 or higher.

A win/place bet for at least a token amount like $2 may be considered for Constitutionlawyer (11) at odds of 15 to 1 or higher.

Trifectas: (which are preferred over exactas since the top key horses are low odds)

Stolen Base (2) over Tawny Port (5), Tiz the Bomb (7) and Blackadder (12) over Rich Strike (4), Tawny Port (5), Tiz the Bomb (7), Red Run (8), Constitutionlawyer (11) and Blackadder (12).

Tiz the Bomb (7) over Stolen Base (2), Tawny Port (5), and Blackadder (12) over Rich Strike (4), Tawny Port (5), Tiz the Bomb (7), Red Run (8), Constitutionlawyer (11) and Blackadder (12).

Exactas: (just $1 or $2 is okay here)

Tawny Port (5) and Blackadder (12) over Rich Strike (4), Tawny Port (5), Blackadder (12), Stolen Base (2), Red Run (8), Constitutionlawyer (11) and Tiz the Bomb (7). (This is to take advantage of the higher odds on Tawny Port and Blackadder)

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
                        Hot List Key:

A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch

4th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (4) True Empress (C) had the lead but got passed by a first-time starter to finish second after getting bet down from 3-1 to 9-5. (6) Liberty Flame was second in her debut at Belmont Park in October last year as a 2-year-old and now she returns with Lasix for her second start. (3) Steppin’ Hawk has been close to getting that first win in three tries this year for a low-profile trainer. (2) Mo Nighean Donn is a daughter of Laoban that makes her first career start for David Donk.
5th race [Clm 16000 N2L, 6F] – (6) Sabreen set the pace and then finished second at this same level after breaking her maiden in her prior start for Steve Asmussen. (1) Stormi Cat Lady was a late-running second for trainer Gustavo Rodriguez. (7) Bella Domenica has been off since August and now drops to an appropriate level to contend for her second victory. (3) Appreciate has a trio of third-place finishes at this N2L level, all at Aqueduct.
6th race [OC 62k/N2X, 1 mi] – (4) Sound Money (A) got off to a slow start, had to rush up to the lead, and then got caught late to finish third. (3) Captain Bombastic (D) was bet down from 7-1 to 5-1, pressed a very fast pace which was costly and he faded to fourth just a length behind the winner. (6) Lil Commissioner has been racing against better horses and now comes back from a couple of months off and runs for a tag. (2) Little Menace was claimed from three recent starts including his last race which he won for a $40,000 tag.
9th race [NY, Md 40000, 6F] – (2) Vincent (B) had the lead in his debut and finished second. In his next start he was unruly before the race when dumped his rider and then broke through the gate losing any chance on that day. He does get a rider change after getting claimed from that bad day. (7) Ria’s Angel drops back down to this level at which he was second in his debut race back in January at Aqueduct. (1) On the Hill was second when he dropped from a maiden special weight to the $25,000 level and now moves to a spot in between. (3) Tonalistic debuted back in May at Delaware Park against open company.

Best bets: True Empress (4th); Sabreen (5th). Best value: Sound Money (6th); Vincent (9th).
