      Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 18th April 2022
      By: Racing and Sports

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for April 18.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Warwick Farm, Muswellbrook, Sandown Lakeside, Pakenham, Oakbank and York.

      WARWICK FARM: RACE 6 @ 3:40 PM

ATHELRIC (3) was a dominant winner over this track and trip last time out and can go right on with the job now. Strips fitter third-up from the spell and gets the services of McDonald to navigate from the sticky alley. Looks the one to beat. SATIN RIBBONS (8) has never missed the top two in five career starts and draws low for Berry in gate three. Must be included. KING KAPA (12) ran fourth in a Group 2 in his first campaign and has since been dealt the ultimate gear change in being gelded. Respect any moves in betting. OUR BELLAGIO MISS (1) has a handy record over this sprint trip with three wins and two placings from nine attempts and can run a race while fresh. SECRETIVELY (10) best of the rest from the inside alley. SELECTIONS: Athelric to win.

      MUSWELLBROOK: RACE 1 @ 12:55 PM

HUBIE DUBIE (8) wasn't disgraced when fourth on debut and will have taken plenty of benefit from that day at the races. Strikes a race here which has been cruelled by scratchings. Suspect she can capitalise. THREETIMESLUCKY (6) has been freshened since his first up outing at this course on March 11. LIMPIDA (13) next best.
SELECTIONS: Hubie Dubie has the most upside of these. Back accordingly.

      SANDOWN-LAKESIDE: RACE 6 @ 4:00 PM

Good race. AUSTRATA (13) has built his form nicely this time in with three placings before a last start win when favourite. Out to this trip looks like it will suit and he's drawn ideally again to get an economical run in transit for Jamie Kah. He looks hard to beat again. EAGLEMONT (11) destroyed his opposition first up before racing a bit dour last start. He appeals strongly each way out to this trip third up and onto the bigger circuit. Look for a bold showing. DETONATOR JACK (17) is a lightly raced, talented stayer on the path to better races. The further the better for him and it would be no surprise to see him make it three on end to start his career. LUNATIC FRINGE (12) will strip fitter second up and typical of the breed is improving with racing. Don't take lightly. COMMANDER HARRY (8) has resumed in good form and although he's likely to get back in the run he isn't without a chance in an open race.
      SELECTIONS: Follow up on Austrata

      PAKENHAM: RACE 4 @ 2:15 PM

SAUNTER BOY (2) won multiple races over Hurdles last season including features The Australian and JJ Houlahan. He can get this season off to a winning start on his way to what should be a lucrative Winter. ST ARNICCA (8) is a promising type who ran out an easy winner last start when favourite. Look for him to build on that effort here and he can figure in the finish. GOBSTOPPER (1) returns to the Hurdles here having missed last season. He was the winner of multiple feature races in 2020 and can't be taken lightly. RUNAWAY (4) will make his own luck on speed and should be in it for a long way. Include among the chances. OUT AND DREAMING (5) has shown good promise over the obstacles and his recent flat form has been excellent. He appeals each way.
SELECTIONS: Saunter Boy is the one to beat.

      OAKBANK: RACE 7 @ 4:20 PM

RUSHAWAY LAD (2) hasn't raced since winning smartly at Morphettville in December. His previous form was solid he draws a good barrier and should take some beating here. HILLS (7) was scratched from Saturday for this and would be right in the mix on his recent form running 2nd behind Quietly Discreet at Morphettville. SEA WITNESS (3) won two of four before a break and is two from two this track and trip. He draws awkwardly but looks well placed.
SELECTIONS: Rushaway Lad looks the one to beat.

      YORK: RACE 8 @ 5:00 PM

CARABINIER (3) has been battling to find his best form in stronger City grade fields. He is unbeaten in three attempts on this track and is very well placed after the 1.5kg apprentice claim. A win would be no surprise. RAGING ROCKET (6) has found his mark at provincial level and was an easy winner in a soft field last start. He will benefit from a three kilo claim and should be right in the finish. IAN'S SPECIAL (7) was unsuited by a wet track in his sole appearance last campaign. He is fresh up today and looked forward when placing at a recent trial. If he is not in need of the run then he will be very hard to beat. Follow any positive market moves. LUCY DA GREY (4) made the most of a good ride and produced a well timed finish to just get up last time out at Narrogin. She is in a good space at the moment and should be thereabouts again.
      SELECTIONS: Carabinier win bet.

Today's Horse Racing Tips: Monday April 18th
        Stephen Harris
        bettingexpert Racing editor

        Today’s Racing Tips – April 18th

A typically busy Easter Monday in Britain and Ireland, with huge bank holiday crowds at the 8 race meetings planned. The best quality action comes from Fairyhouse, where the Irish Grand National at 5.00pm is sure to be the big betting race of the afternoon. Elsewhere, there are NH cards at Chepstow, Fakenham, Plumpton and Huntingdon. Flat fans can study the action from Kempton, Redcar and on the all-weather at Wolverhampton.
        Today’s Daily Nap

        Fairway Freddy

        Plumpton 2:52pm

Nick Gifford’s 9-y-o usually comes right in the spring when the ground dries out, and he returned to his best form over 2m4f round here last time out. A few pounds weight rise will make little difference now he is back in form, and a positive ride dropping back in trip from James Davies should make him very hard to beat.

        Odds: 3.50
        Today’s Value Angle

        Oceanline

        Plumpton 2:17pm

Alan King’s maiden shaped well when fifth in a strong Ascot handicap last time out, and will relish this drop down in class under Tom Cannon. He remains winless after four runs over hurdles, but should appreciate a speed test round this sharp track and his rating in the mid 80s on the flat suggests he could be one to follow over the next few months.

        Odds: TBD

Odds are best odds available as at 12pm April 17th 2022. Odds may now differ.

Keeler Johnson's picks and plays for April 18
            J. Keeler Johnson

Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares $100 worth of picks and plays for Monday, April 18 at Turf Paradise and Mountaineer, including a pair of cold exactas.
            Picks and Plays
Turf Paradise: Race 5: $50,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (six furlongs, 6:25 p.m. ET)

#1 Missczech (5-2) couldn’t quite handle stakes competition in the one-mile Arizona Oaks two starts back, finishing fourth. But the daughter of Cairo Prince bounced back sharply in a $75,000 allowance optional claimer sprinting six furlongs at Turf Paradise last month, leading almost all the way to dominate by three lengths.

The 83 Brisnet Speed rating Missczech posted is the highest figure in Monday’s field by a clear margin, so sticking to the same track and distance should make Missczech tough to beat under hot jockey Harry Hernandez. #3 Roses for Suzzett (9-2) and #5 Addydidit (6-1) can battle to complete the exacta and trifecta.

$25 to win on #1 Missczech
            $5 Exacta: 1 with 3,5 ($10)
            $2.50 Trifecta: 1 with 3,5 with 3,5 ($5)
            Total: $40

            Mountaineer: Race 2: $4,000 Claiming (4 1/2 furlongs, 7:25 p.m. ET)

#1 Kiki Do U Love Me (15-1) might be 0-for-9, but she’s never sprinted as short as 4 1/2 furlongs, and this abbreviated trip might make all the difference. Kiki Do U Love Me boasts tactical speed and has twice led past the eighth pole in five-furlong $4,000 maiden claimers at Mountaineer, only to falter late.

There isn’t a crazy amount of speed in Monday’s field, and the class-dropping favorite #7 After the Wire (7-5) is a deep closer whose lone trifecta finish came in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint on synthetic. If Kiki Do U Love Me shakes loose up front, she can spring a gate-to-wire surprise.

$20 to win on #1 Kiki Do U Love Me
            $10 Exacta: 1 with 7
            Total: $30

Mountaineer: Race 5: $10,000 Claiming (six furlongs, 8:40 p.m. ET)

#1 Kingston Time (3-1) was last seen finishing seventh in a $15,000 claimer on Jan. 31 at Mahoning Valley. It wasn’t his best effort, but dropping in class and returning to Mountaineer can trigger a rebound. Kingston Time hasn’t missed the trifecta in a dozen starts over this track, including a nine-length romp against $10,000 claiming company on Nov. 28.

Kingston Time consistently puts up 80+ Brisnet Speed ratings when on his game, a plateau his Monday rivals have been struggling to reach. Throw in the fact trainer Michael Baird wins at a solid 18% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, and Kingston Time looms as a formidable win threat.

#3 Arcelor (2-1), second in his last two starts against $10,000 claiming company, can complete a cold exacta.

$20 to win on #1 Kingston Time
            $10 Exacta: 1 with 3
            Total: $30

            Good luck!

Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

              April 18, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the week with a 10-race card and the feature rolls in Race 9, a Preferred Trot with a $36,000 purse. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

              Race 7

3-Combs Hanover (9/2)-Broke in its season debut but now trotting hopples will go back on. The 2 qualifiers were good, has beaten better here and could be overlooked at the windows.
4-Phoenix (4-1)-Form has been okay but hasn't sealed the deal at this level. Put in a decent try last week but took the long way around. This time Filion may look to race near the top of the stack and should offer a solid price.
6-Patriarch Hanover (5/2)-Raced big in last from post 10 to just miss and came a close 3rd. Those who finished ahead are not part of this field and looks like a main player tonight.

              Race 8

3-Hello Rocky (10-1)-Slow starts have hurt and has been in versus better. Can close off the right trip and should relish the company.
8-Lyons Image (3-1)-Likes to compete at the B tracks and fits well at this level here. Roy should be out and rolling off the gate and has hit the board in 4 of 9 at Wbsb with 2 wins.

              Race 9

2-Oney Hall (8/5)-Many will single, and recent form backs up that status. But will look to use 2 others who are good enough to win with a top try.
4-Perfetto (3-1)-Probably the most likely to knock off the chalk and doesn't race as often as others. Henriksen picks his spots and could come up big here.
6-Dream Nation (7/2)-Competes well at this level and should offer some value. This race can shape up nicely, fractions should be lively and Young could be rolling faster than the rest down the lane.

              Race 10

6-Just Plain Needy (3-1)-Took control and fled the scene to post a new lifetime mark. That effort shouldn't be overlooked.
8-Big Journey (7/2)-Didn't fire off the gate leaving from the rail and was >9 lengths back. But rallied well to cash a 2nd place check versus a strong winner. The post helps the price and McClure could work a sharp steer.

              0.20 Late Pick 4

              3,4,6/3,8/2,4,6/6,8
              Total bet=$7.20

                Parx - Race #6
                Picks Notes
#4 Otis Otis Otis He has been making a habit of landing underneath shares with this kind in recent starts, so he’s not far off what it might take to land this, and the price will probably be acceptable again today.
#10 Defibrillator He finished just in front of the top choice last time out, and he has reliable form and a little versatility that gives his rider a couple options out of the gate. Not totally sold, and I worry that he’s going to be overbet and along a bit too late.
#1 Admiral Eastwood His form can be all over the place, but his best stuff stacks up nicely with these and he’s probably capable of something a bit better than he showed last time out.
Race Summary Otis Otis Otis tends to run his race while settling for pieces, but he is competitive with this group and usually gets a pretty good trip with his positional pace. -- Brian W. Spencer

                Parx - Race #7
                Picks Notes
#1 Irish Colonel He was pretty flat last time out, but he’s not far removed from some very solid tries with similar, and he might end up getting a decent enough trip tucked in just behind the pace.
#6 Get the W He’s in really good form right now and will just have to transfer it to the new team in order to make some noise here, and he should be in line for a nice trip spying the pace from close range.
#3 Puttheglassdown His recent form isn’t great, but he has been in with better starter groups and has not seen company like this in quite some time. Wouldn’t be a surprise to see him wake up in a hurry here.
Race Summary There are a couple of committed speed types drawn a bit further outside, so Irish Colonel can probably find position from the fence while in touch with those players early on. The price figures to be right in a competitive race. -- Brian W. Spencer

                Parx - Race #8
                Picks Notes
#1 Turnpike Bob He stacked up well with similar enough company last time out on the rise, and he has some sharp pace to put to use from the fence. There are some pressing types drawn outside, so he may not be able to shake loose, but perhaps a manageable pace is in the cards.
#3 Three Comma Glenn He turned in a powerhouse press and pounce win in the debut try, and he’ll get around two turns with some tactical sprint pace to his name. He might be a fun prospect to watch here, but I’ll let him prove the route trip to me at a short price.
#4 Loose Ends Would have liked to see a bit better positional pace from him when moving around two turns, but he rallied nicely in the end to land a small piece. Think one of the top pair will handle him here.
Race Summary Turnpike Bob might be the right one to beat Three Comma Glenn, as he has some pace from the rail and might be able to control the tempo from the start with these. -- Brian W. Spencer

Mike Lundin's Angels vs Astros MLB Free Pick April 18, 2022
I really like the Houston Astros Monday night. They are 5-4 on the season, but it's not all that shabby considering that this will be their home opener for the season. I expect a big game from the Astros after taking a 7-2 beating at Seattle on Sunday. Luis Garcia (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will toe the slab for Houston in his second start of the season. Garcia tossed four scoreless innings while allowing two hits and two walks against Arizona on April 12. The Astros went 13-6 in 19 games against LAA last season.
                            Free pick on Houston Astros.
